  • Installation of a RaceChip performance upgrade in a BMW X3 M Competition with the S58 Engine.
This is a moderately difficult installation. This installation is not representative of the “normal” installation process in other vehicles.
The installation is similar on the following vehicles equipped with the S58 Engine:
    BMW X3 M / M Competition (F97)
    BMW X4 M / M Competition (F98)
    BMW M3 / M3 Competition (G80)
RaceChip is a plug & play add-on control unit for more power and torque for turbocharged and supercharged vehicles.

6/23/24 - FYI if you are going to do this install yourself it is fully possible.
    TIP:
The boost pressure sensor - go to Harbor freight or a tool store and purchase an extra long flat head screw driver and an extra long bird-beek pliers. Go through the driver side wheel well and use the flat head to pull up the sensor tab, after that use the pliers to squeeze the sensor, put your had up and pull the sensor back. It should come loosen.
    This method worked for me.
    Good luck.

Definitely not a plug n play solution if you have to take it to the mechanic to remove underbody plate. For S58, its really hard to reach boost pressure sensor, so avoid it unless you have a family mechanic always available to help

It's been discussed on Bimmerpost. Do NOT go through bottom. No.. Go through the drivers wheel well - there is a plastic panel, remove that and you can see sensor looking up and forward. Use a 90degree pic to unclip. Do not go from the bottom.

I’ve installed this on my 2023 bmw x4m and after like few months of use I’ve started to get check engine lights and loss of power when accelerating. Once switch it back to stock everything seems to be fine.
This race chip piggy back is not worth it

Do you have to gap spark plugs? If so, if you remove the chip when taking it in for service, would the dealership not notice gapped spark plugs. newbie. Have x3m looking at options.

No you do not need to gap the plugs. Even if you did, there is no reason for the dealership to pull your plugs for routine maintenance. Regardless, plugs are a wear and tear part, so replacing them should not void your warranty in the first place.

Wish they would tell you don’t do this at home because there is no way possible to get bottom sensor off.

That connector is extremely hard to get, but doable. It took me ONE HOUR!!! it didn't help that I have beefy hands and big sausages for fingers. If you have an extra set of hands helping you, it goes a long way. I basically was leaning over the engine bay and sticking my hand in what it felt like the jaws of a tiger shark. And with a lot of trial and error, I got to do the disconnect and connection with three fingers. For $700, I wish this thing would come with a special tool to help you connect/disconnect BMW type connectors. Oh well.

Does this void the factory warranty ?

It's an additional control unit that does not modify the ecu. Once removed, the car is completely in stock condition.

@@RaceChipInstallationVideos Your warranty may be voided if the dealership mechanic finds the chip installed during routine maintenance. It's a judgement call. I've had performance chips on my previously owned vehicles and actually decided to tell the dealership mechanic about it. He thought it was cool and never had any issues. But this may not be the case for other mechanics and dealerships. The results may vary to say the least. My advice? Remove the race chip module itself and leave all the wiring harness in place. If they ask about the harnesses, tell them you bought the vehicle used and have no idea what they are...lol

      @joejay2876 2 роки тому +1

@@Great_America I like this advise. But to add to it... If there is a big enough warranty claim on the powertrain, they may look at the ECU logs and find that the car was overboosting, overtorquing, etc. and deny you warranty for having enough circumstantial evidence that suggest you were using a piggy-back or tuning system. But like you said, establish a good relationship with your dealership so that you can at least have them on your side if there is a dispute with BMW of America.

The explanation of the a sensor is horrible. I couldn’t get my hand in a good enough position to unclip the sensor. Any tips?

Marc Tallman I used a longer screwdriver from the top to put it behind the pull tab. That worked... I just cannot unplug the oem connector. The oem plug is already coming apart, so I am going to give up and return the chip.. 😔
