    The amount of laughter and joy is exactly why Mazda built this car. So glad that someone is seeing the body roll and motions not as a negative but as a positive to enjoy. Definitely not a perfect time attack car right out of the box but SO MUCH potential.

    I have a ‘19 with the Brembos, Bilsteins etc. My first track day was similarly “entertaining”.
    I solved the sloppy/floppy suspension by swapping in Good-win Racing Roadster Sport Springs (street/track). They work perfectly with the Bilsteins. The ride is still fine. They Lowered it maybe 1/2” so still streetable but goodbye suspension slop!
    They also transformed the handling on the track. I added adjustable Karcepts anti-roll bars to further tune and balance the suspension.
    I also experienced the shifter vagueness. It was solved by adding the JBR differential mount. After that shifting under maximum load did not effect the precision of the shift lever.
    I finally replaced the front Brembo rotors with larger discs. The Brembos are not up to heavy duty track use and the car goes into ICE mode requiring massive effort to slow down (even using racing brake fluid).
    Adding 245 width sticky tires was the final touch. The car now turns times equal to the Civic Type R that it replaced(And the Civic was on even bigger sticky track tires).

      Did you try switching to a more track-focused pad before upgrading the brakes? I'm not a big fan of the brembos from a fitment standpoint but I'm surprised they ended up being a weak point for you given how many people run these hard on autocross/track days with just a pad upgrade. My first two mods were the same as yours, btw, (well very similar, I went with the FM springs and koni dampeners). Karcepts sway bar is absolutely the best thing I ever did to this car and well worth the extra $ over other options.

    • @KenColton
      @KenColton 2 місяці тому

      @@jgalt99 Not original commenter, but I can believe it. I’m running OEM brembo rotors + standard calipers + racing pads + dot 4 + RE71RS. The amount of force required to get to threshold at high speed is very high for me. It does stop and the fade is pretty manageable but it just doesn’t inspire confidence to push braking zones on the high speed stuff when I gotta put all my strength into the pedal initially. Below 90 it’s totally fine.
      Trying a more aggressive pad next. Otherwise will probably go up to a willwood kit or something. Just been avoiding that since then I have to run STR in autox which will tempt me to make many more mods.
      Also possible I’ve just skipped too many leg days 😅

    Not sure how the differential has to keep up with you, you are the driver you work with what you have

    • @DriversPaddock
      @DriversPaddock  4 місяці тому

      Absolutely, you’re right. It’s why I needed to slightly blend off the throttle on exit even though the tires should have had it in them to push the car out. The inside wheel spins for two reasons… could use a better diff and second, the body roll unloading the inside tire. Doesn’t change the fact that the differential is not keeping up with the rest of the car.. the current limiting factor on corner exit, in stock form.

  • @Ginbaubabe
    @Ginbaubabe 3 місяці тому +2

    Agree the car is under-damped coz the vertical stiffness is slightly too much. If u see the size of the anti-roll bars u’d understand Mazda deliberately set up this car to have body roll like the 80s original n exaggerate the driving sensation.

      @@KevinWong_BRZ why not? The abarth seemed pretty decent with less floppy suspension setup and better weighted inputs. Also more powerful at high elevation thanks to the turbo, but also more nose heavy and less playful because that turbo engine is not the lightest. Definitely felt better than nd1, nd2 got closer.

  • @dowroa

    It is so strange to watch these non-east coast videos on the ND RF miata on track. That car, as it sits, is not able to be ran anywhere (ViR, Road Atlanta, Summit Point, AMP, CMP, etc). A rollbar is a REQUIREMENT at all those tracks AND you have to pass the brookstick test with today's super-padded helmets. There is also NOT an ND RF rollbar. :(
    So, for that specific car, it is not the answer for HPDE or TNiA usage. Heck, even for Summit Point's Track Cross events, you can't take that car out there.
    If you want to take ANY miata, get a tall roll bar, ditch the top and then you can take them out... but at that point, you might as well get a tintop if you want to DD it as well. :(

    • @darksunrise8777
      @darksunrise8777 4 місяці тому

      Agree. I've tracked on east coast and west coast. Despite what's written in the rulebook, they're definitely more lenient on the west coast. My last track day at Buttonwillow, nobody attempted to broomstick me with an s2000. There were also plenty of Miata drivers with their helmets extending over the broomstick line and nobody cared. Whether that's actually a good thing or not is another topic lol. It definitely made me think twice about sending it 😂

    • @DriversPaddock
      @DriversPaddock  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for chiming in… we have a few tracks on our end that are more lenient. However, at the big tracks like Canadian tire Motorsports Park GP and DDT, they are very strict on helmet, roll over protection, etc. Either way, this car is getting a roll cage put in… unfortunately making the retractable roof inoperable.
      Side note…We actually had an RF rollover locally… no rollbar… driver was totally fine, but that’s not to say that RF’s should go without rollbars…
      I guess these are some of the reasons why I don’t already own a Miata and have a brz as one of the cars in my garage.
      Cheers

    Anyone else disappointed with how the ND2 fared on track? Between the mis-shifts, soft suspension, ridiculous tire shoulder wear, diff issues, vague steering feel and overall slow times (4-5 seconds slower than a gen 2 BRZ), this car didnt really impress me. As far as JDM convertibles go, s2000 seems like the better answer.

    • @DriversPaddock
      @DriversPaddock  4 місяці тому +4

      Don’t be! Mis shifts is a me problem, keep in mind I get 6-8 laps in the car. The soft suspension is super fun at 7-8 10ths! Yes… at 10/10ths it leaves something to be desired and there is tons of lean and tire rollover but that can be fixed with coilovers. The nd2 won’t impress you performance wise out of the box… the lap times aren’t impressive…but you’ll have tons of fun and you just know… with proper set up and light mods… it’ll be a weapon….ill be reviewing a brz and an s2k shortly…stay tuned.

      @@DriversPaddockLooking forward to the reviews. I've tracked a mostly stock AP2 S2000 and 2nd gen BRZ, so I know how good (and closely matched) those cars are from the factory. It just surprises me how far off the ND2 is in handling and overall performance, even with the OEM upgrades. I also never had mis-shift issues with either of those cars. If you take requests, I'd like to see a review of ND2 with aftermarket coilovers. Curious how much that alone helps laptimes and overall feel of the car.
