  • We grew up watching world famous Steve Irwin, Crocodile Hunter. His personality, excitement and passion for wildlife were both inspiring and infectious. So we knew that while in Australia, we had to visit the Australia Zoo. We know zoos aren't for everybody, but this experience honestly opened our eyes to the huge role some zoos play in protecting wildlife.

Let us know how you feel about zoos!

I'm a bit like you, Lisa, not a fan of zoos. I think wildlife sanctuaries are ok, especially those that care for and raise injured or orphaned wildlife, but zoos are not for me. I always feel sorry for the animals. Even aquariums in lots of places have dolphins and even whale sharks. To me, those are ocean swimmers and too large and intelligent to be in an aquarium.

I have read, that there is a lot of animosity between Terri Irwin (Steve" wife) and her father in law, but nothing like Joe Exoctic and Carol Baskin.

I've been to some awful zoos around the world, especially 20+ years ago, but I've also been to some amazing ones where the animals are clearly happy and well cared for. Things are getting better and as you said, its all about education. Great video, really well done and very touching.

I have no moral high ground from which to judge zoos but personally I use feeding touch and interacting with the capture animals as a threshold that I won't cross . If an attraction emphasis this it a hard pass for me.

So glad you liked Australia zoo. I took my family there about 10 years ago, they were having a silent auction to raise money for a couple of rescued tortoise, the prize was spending 30 minutes one on one with Terry, Bindi and a very young Robert. Being a huge Steve Irwin fan and my daughter 12 at the time being a fan of Bindi I couldn't say no to placing a bid. It turned out the auction was so silent as you could easily see what other people bid. My initial bid was $1000 well above the other current bids, we came back a few hours later to see I had been slightly outbid. In the last few minutes we got in to a bidding war and it was up to $1750, the other family bidding were trying to decide if they wanted to outbid me yet again, so I asked management was there any reason both families couldn't have the 30 mins with The Irwin's together if we both paid $1500, both management and the other family loved the idea. The amazing thing is the other family hardly asked any questions to the Irwin's, we chatted their ears off. 😁 The experience is one of my fondest memories, the Irwin's are truly an amazing, humble and beautiful family..

I loved watching you two experience the Australia Zoo. I was fortunate enough to visit there many years ago and got to see Steve presenting his show at the Crocaseum! However we haven’t been back since. We regularly visit our friends in Beerwab and keep meaning to visit but we get put off by the price! 💰💰After watching our video you have convinced us to make sure we visit it with the kids!
I really liked the way that Lisa started a conversation about zoos. As a school teacher, I often get my students to debate this very topic. I will have to show them your video, as it brings up many valid points from both sides of the debate. ❤️

wow, that's amazing that you were able to go when he was there. He was such a core part of why we both were fascinated by wildlife, especially in Australia. we definitely enjoyed the visit and hope more people make their way back soon!
thanks for sharing this. we struggle with the tension between wanting to just showcase and enjoy a place for what it is and diving into the more complicated things, but we're glad we did both this time :)

The drunkest animals = koalas. 😂😂 Zoos definitely have their place! They educate kids, do research, care for animals that wouldn't otherwise make it, and conservation! We have a fantastic renowned zoo in MN - Como Zoo. Our neighbor works there and has helped us see the benefits they can bring (but I see the entertainment point, also). Bill's favorite animal was the cat at the end... 😂😂😂

that's awesome! it definitely made me check my assumptions about just the word "zoo"! (our favorite animal is also that cat at the end!! ☺️☺️☺️)

Australia zoos are just the best. The Australian animals are so special and you can be pet and feed and hold some of these glorious creatures. It’s simply amazing how much space they have, how close the environment resembles their natural habitat and how well they are being looked after. All animals look so well and energetic (apart from the drunk ones😁). 🐨 🦘 ❤️

I am 100% with you lisa, the zoo we went to as kids we thought was great was in fact just a concrete pit.Elephants trapped and bored and monkeys in tiny cages for us to stare at,looking back now was just terrible. We have come a long way thank god and i think the word zoo still turns people off!!-wildlife sanctuary or refuge is so much better. This place looks epic and the irwins are legends so i am a lot more comfortable with that for sure

Yes it's strange, Lisa, I loved to visit zoos when I was a child. But as I grow older zoos make me sad, seeing animals in cages. But there are some good zoos, like the one you have visited. Josh really has such a childlike excitement in going to visit the zoo, which I think is wonderful. Glad you got to meet some of the locals (aka kangaroos)🦘🐊🕷️🐾🦒

Thanks for another video. I appreciate your thoughtful reviews on zoos. I too often struggle about the idea of keeping animals out of their natural environment. But I think well run zoos can be great for conservation efforts and education.
I love watching your adventures. Would you consider making slightly longer videos? I keep feeling disappointed when they end so soon. It seems like the sweet spot for episode lengths watching other UA-camrs for me is about 20 min.

What an amazing zoo experience! I have similar feelings toward zoos, Lisa, but there definitely are some decent zoos (among some awful zoos) around. I went to one over 15 years ago where it still haunts me to think about it and wonder how the animals are there to this day. This zoo seems to foster their well-being.

    • @LisaAndJosh
      @LisaAndJosh  2 роки тому +1

agreed! it can be easy to write them off and make assumptions, but I left feeling a deep appreciation for the zoos that foster animals' well being, as you say :)

Australia Zoo looks special. I used to love the zoo as a kid, too, but as an adult it just makes me too upset to visit zoos most of the time. my issue is that only a fraction of places are actually big enough and care enough to have decent confinements. so many zoos were built many decades ago where it seems like size standards were a lot smaller than what I feel comfortable with, and it's just despressing to see how the animals are affected. if only all the zoos could be like Australia Zoo, both in terms of size but also all the other ways they care about animals.

Hello You Two, The creeping tragedy of this story is that because of unbridled development, in a hundred years, marsupials will only exist in zoos. Whether they're a necessary evil or not, eventually zoos will become necessary. Thankyou so much for this video

Lisa stop be a “self righteous Karen”Australia Zoo is great… Kangaroo‘s and Crocodiles are plentiful in Australia, the animals in Australia Zoo are fine and happy… Quite simply there are much bigger issues in the world
