I discovered what a hurdy-gurdy was last year. As humorous as its name is, its appearance and sound is very derivative of a violin or a cello, and makes for a very heavy and emotional tone (either antagonistic, primal, passionate, or sorrowful) in whatever its used in. Think Lord of the Rings tone.
I decided to use my retro Windows 98/XP rig (with period parts), and recorded with an external capture device. Unfortunately, Myst V did not want to cooperate (turns out it was corrupted graphics drivers), and it would have taken some time to get to Myst Island even when knowing the quickest way to set up the conditions to get there, so I had to use a different method.
I used a converter (called "Drizzle") for Uru: Complete Chronicles a long while back to import the world files from Myst V: End of Ages, allowing users to explore them as if they were part of the original game.
All I did was download the music, add some reverb for atmosphere, and convert it to Ogg Vorbis format, and used the same name as the original ambient music from the game. What you are hearing in the video is not pasted over top of footage. The audio file is actually being played from inside the game engine.
For this, it is VERY haunting, and it really does feel like you're walking around a forgotten, ruined relic that will never really be seen by anyone else.

it really is amazing how exploring older video games can feel like revealing ruins or secrets, especially when the games came out while you were alive but didn't have the capacity to know about them or play them.

What I want to know is, how did Atrus, Anna, and Catran come up with all of the things they put on their island Age? Atrus spent most of his life in the desert; Anna most of hers between the desert and D'ni; and Catran spent her entire life on Riven. Where in the name of the Maker, would any of them have seen a cartoonish rocket?

Apparently it's part of the "in-universe" artistic license. The rocketship is a stand-in for some other D'ni machinery. The way the Myst's story is set-up, is that the games are not just their own narrative, but as accounts of an "actual history", blurring the line between fact and fiction.
That is, these were events forgotten by history. (The "Based on a True Story" trope we've seen before) *Seemingly* , an actual Myst Island existed, as did Riven, D'ni, and all of these other places, as well as Atrus, Catherine, Sirrus, Achenar, Gehn, Yeesha, etc. It's something that makes you think, but that's part of the fictional fun. We have something similar in "Alternate Reailty Games" today.
