Her voice is so one of a kind!! She defines the word 'unique' vocally! And then there's her guitar playing, also unique! And on a steel 12-string which is once again, unique! Put it all together and you have a musical gift of the highest order!! Thank you, Fil for bringing her to us as only you can! You are also a gift to us!

I have been a fan of Joan Armatrading for years, since hearing her on the John Peel show. Her tune "Show some Emotion" is among my most played vinyl 45's. I was lucky enough to see her play (again) a few years ago here in the U.K. she was bluesy & brilliant, really letting rip on guitar.

I loved the sound that came from her Ovation, but never saw her riff like this. Late to the party, but thanks for this !

Learning about how accomplished and generous Joan really is was as great as having that amazingly complex playing sorted out for us! What a great career she's had!! I see the brother (Tony Armatrading) who suggested she play a few covers to draw people in, (and then wow 'em with her originals), on TV here in the US quite a bit and he's had a considerable film career, as well. Pretty talented family! This was all in all a totally wonderful analysis video, thank you!

Another person you might look at is Boz Scaggs - live footage from as early as 1971, and an excellent live concert from 2004. He is someone who people may need a re-introduction to - his new album is "Out of the Blues" and it is great, imho. He both plays guitar and sings.

@@wingsofpegasus I only wish that was true. I first saw her in the 70s and have been following her since, but she has a pretty niche audience here I would suggest. She never won a Grammy or a Brit - shameful. Just compare her to the winners the years she was nominated. Her biggest recognition was the recent Radio 2 Lifetime Achievement Folk Award - hardly mainstream. Her highest charting single was Love & Affection way back in '76 - more typically she doesn't chart. Highest charting album was Show Some Emotion in '76 at #6. Again, most of her recent work didn't chart. Glastonbury hid her away on the World Music stage. When you consider how she towers above most of the pap we are served these days, that's a pretty meagre return.

Thank you for this great assessment of Joan's guitar playing. I'm surprised you didn't mention the phaser effect pedal she is using (you can see/hear her switching it on in the full video), which is very clever in that it adds texture and a third dimension to an already very rich sound. It does take the sound to another level. I'll venture to guess she uses it to fill out the sound a little more to substitute for the full band (rhythm section, piano, backing vocals) that is in the album version.
For those who are interested in streaming this on Spotify, there is a similar version of this song, from the same year, on the Live in North America set).
