Joe O’Gorman might be the greatest role player I’ve every seen in my 16 years of role playing. Every character he plays is so unique and just next level engaging. I’m a big fan Joe, way to be.
With most people you can see how THAT person came up with THAT character, they have filled in a lot of cracks with their own preferred RP or personality. Joe just goes for it with creating characters and lets them have their own thing. *Spoiler for ShadowsOD* When he just abandoned ship to be lured by the water monster thing because Joe figured that Wrath would do it, TOP TIER RP. *spoilers for MOTW* When Miami drove his car out the back of the plane. He creates characters to entertain, not to survive, and I respect it.
It combines well with the fact that Jill is one of the best with the mechanics of the game. Not that either one is lacking in the other area, it's just that one is primary stat and the other is second.
Kelly is exceptionally well qualified for the role, but I think every DM should try to groom their most consistent player as a fill-in DM, and engage them in the building of the world. At the least, it helps to have someone to veto the really stupid ideas that are going to paint you in a corner. But it also means if the DM just can't prepare some week due to life, then the alternate can step in and run something that has been prepped ahead of time for just such an event. This may not advance the campaign, but then again it might, and more importantly, it just keeps the game rolling as usual. The DM knows there is a backup plan, and also a chance to either avoid burnout (and play the session) or "call in sick" without canceling the game if there's a real world problem to be dealt with. Since I pretty much plan an adventure from beginning to end, and then tinker with it between sessions, it's generally possible to push those burnout moments off until the end of one. Then it's up to the players whether they want to make a party for the one-shot, or play their normal roles, or possibly a mixture of the two (although that causes leveling sync problems).
Eisenhorn? Nobody expects the Drakkenheim Inquisition! Skip's codpiece is certainly impressive; or is he wearing leather chaps? The voice is fantastic. It is great to see Joe back on the panel. "We do offer tours..." Kelly is such a gem running this game.

Late to the game here, but I love hearing Monty's play style, Kelly's DM style, seeing Joe and Mitch both be incredible roleplayers(as Joe usually is and Mitch not knowing the rules very well but going full-force into his character) and still picture Drakkenheim the same way in my head.
Alright, i have not watched even a second of the video yet. Before i do i wanted to first sound off in the comments about how extremely hyped i am to seeing Kelly DMing while Monty is playing! With that out of the way, off i go, adventuring with the Dungeon Dudes and their good friends!
Yes, it certainly seems like the voice you would expect from a diminuitive halfling, though it might be even funnier if a deep booming voice came out of the halfling, so people hear him coming via his voice and then are confused when no one matching the voice in appearance wanders into view.
Hears the name of Monty's character, then expects for him to pull out a badge is the shape of an I and the accompanying sound of a boltgun being cocked.
I have been waiting for a player Monty for so long :)) and of course he plays a spellcaster haha Really excited. Also really wanted to see Kelly in the hot seat. He's so good with his player role play
Given that all but three classes are spellcasters, and two of those three have spellcasting subclasses, there's usually not more than one non-spellcaster in a 5e party unless it's 5 or 6 people. If I'm gathering a party, the first thing I ask is "who has their heart set on a particular build, and who is willing to fill in the gaps those leave behind?" If I end up supplying a tag-along NPC, it's almost always a fighter, ranger, rogue, or maybe an armored-up cleric to support a three-PC party.
@@alexanderthompson7164 I also like running three characters, but there's more variance to deal with. The importance of every die roll is magnified. If a chuul can pick up your party's paladin and paralyze him repeatedly, effectively stunlocking your frontliner and grinding him into paste (which is exactly what happened in a test I'm still running, this was last week's session), this is a much bigger problem if there are only two allies to deal with the crisis _and_ the enemies, as opposed to three. As it was, the paladin was one round from dying. He'd already been popped back up once while in the grasp of the chuul, and I make it perfectly clear to the players that even stupid monsters will only make the mistake of letting a PC get popped back up _once._ After that, they'll focus fire and go for the kill even if there are other enemies, because whack-a-mole isn't going to work and even a creature with a 5 INT knows that. Having four in the party as opposed to three was the difference between the paladin being a rag doll for 80% of the fight but surviving, and being torn in half. We ran as a three player game with three characters, for years. Then two players but still three characters. Now we're back to three players, but they like having the pointy DPS machine along like a champion fighter or a gloom stalker ranger with sharpshooter. It's just that nobody in my group finds that to be very interesting to play.
@@alexanderthompson7164 Oh I had a disastrous TPK with this group not so long ago. The only thing that prevented it from being a true TPK is that one character survived her death saves and stabilized, and the necromancer they were chasing traded the one living and three dead characters for a large number of humanoid and animal corpses. Then they all had to be resurrected, except the one miraculous survivor, and the town they were trying to save from said necromancer had to pack up and move. The paladin is not one of those four, and is new to the game. There was a very real possibility he would have set a new record for shortest lifespan for a serious one-shot character -- four rounds of his first combat -- just because he kept rolling 1 and 2 on the die when it came to saving against the chuul's paralytic poison. The way the party TPK'd it in a prior session came down to the fact that it was two players controlling everyone, and one of them had just gone into YOLO mode when the previous encounters had been too easy. This caused them to just walk straight into the lair Leeroy Jenkins style. They (for the most part) got initiative. They were also completely shredded after three rounds. We didn't play again for two months. Anyhow, the entire first session basically consisted of that one fight, and a little bit of exploration. We ended with the gray slaad mini-boss cutting them a deal, where it would vacate its lair for 24 hours and they could use it to rest, so long as they let it have a few minutes to collect its belongings and plane shift out peacably. If the party did not agree, then it would plane shift out anyhow, only without the promise not to attack them in their sleep. So they agreed. Its parting psychic "words" were, "Sorry about Chuulio, he gets that way when he's hangry." It then left the party to fight its "guard dog". While the bard does know Revivify, they only have one diamond. Having to spend it after the very first encounter would greatly change the dynamic of the adventure, to say the least. To me, this is the difference between a three character party and a four character party. In a three character party, you catch a run of bad rolls like that and you're dead before any of your allies have time to react. In a four character party, they can just barely manage it by the skin of their teeth.
