I've been thinking lately of something that could help dealing with fears of specific animals:
Look at how the animal treats you. When you approach them properly, and safely (basically do so when Keven thinks you're ready and how he instructs you to do so) think about how gentle this animal is handling you, how kindly and calmly they are and how totally nonchalant they are about you sharing their space with them. _Observe_ the bee(s) and think about how everything they are doing in regards to interacting with you is based nearly entirely on the sheet account of trust they have in you.
I first realized this when thinking about people who are afraid of snakes, while I was holding my little Sans-manz (BEL ball python). I actually said OUT LOUD “how can anyone not love even these snakes, their so gentle with us.” That was when I was pretty sure I was in to something. I thought that if people realized how hard the snake worked to be so patient with humans, it's only fair to try to be patient back. Try to put yourself in the snake's shoes. Remember that the venomous ones only have their venom, and the others, their teeth. My guy? Well both of the other members of my family were bitten by him (feeding response while we were learning his eating schedule, plus he had cataracts so he was dealing with that winning his first year on this planet) and neither of them really felt it pretty much at all (I have a pretty ridiculous reaction speed, so he tried, but I never got bitten lol).
Anyway, my point here is, these snakes are super vulnerable, yet still they interact with us and when socialized (which any snake someone with a snake phobia would ideally be introduced to) they learn and seem to enjoy being quite gentle with us, well in so much as a snake can enjoy things lol (I personally believe snakes feel love, it just looks like nothing we as humans would even recognize being portrayed as such.)
When applied to honeybees, of they sing someone/something they die. If you're allergic, you can also die, so you should stay away just in case. All that said, of your calm, you won't scare them, and if you're not, well you'd have to be so not calm as to scare that poor little dude into literally wanting to take her own life! bee's and bee like insect (accessories... Sorry, King of the Hill reference... Bad, bad KotH reference. Sorry again) who don't lose their stingers and therefore more often than not their lives are going to take a LOT more to genuinely scare enough to sing you than literally any other bee/journey/wasp, yet they still like to come check out their people! And having a bee be gentle with you means you're one of their people💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤

I was researching to find out what they do in the winter. Fascinating!! They move their tiny bodies constantly, to mimic a furnace. They don't hybernate. That is amazing and I've never seen a hive in the winter to see and hear them vibrating to keep warm and eating off their honey supply. Amazing!!

I'd love to keep bees if I didn't have so many black bears, I had one false charge me the other day. I love how friendly bees are, the wild ones in my yard let me pick them up. I tried to save an adult female carpenter bee, she had a huge gash between one of her eyes and her wing and couldn't fly. Unfortunately, she passed, her organs were exposed. It was a great learning experience. If you want good pollinators that grow themselves every year, try rhubarb. They grow fast and also produce pollen sooner than every other pollinators I've tried. It's so true that keeping bugs can help with depression, it's sure helped wonders for me.

When I was physically able to garden, I planted for insects and native animals. Bees would land on my arm and drink from droplets of sweat…such an amazing experience. Never stung. Really miss gardening…it helped a lot with my depression. What you’re doing is wonderful!

I just researched getting some bees of my own to keep. I'm going to do it!! I'm excited! 👍🏼 I already have flower beds that attract hummingbirds and butterflies, I love them. The wind storm in the south ruined the hummingbird visit this summer. I usually see the same hummingbirds every year . I miss them.

If the goal is to help native wildlife, PLEASE DO NOT GET HONEYBEES!! The honeybees generally kept by beekeepers are European honeybees, which are highly invasive due to their agricultural use and, of course, being raised for honey production. They are detrimental to native species in every location they are now found in outside of Europe. Honeybees are not in need of saving- they are among the most successful insects on earth due to humans keeping them! Colony collapse disorder is a problem, but it is a drop in the bucket compared to the rampant pesticide use, habitat destruction, and competition faced by carpenter bees, sweat bees, mason bees, and digger bees, which are what actually need saving. As mentioned earlier, that is in part because people keep introducing more and more honeybees to more and more places, where they proceed to outcompete the bees that naturally live there and spread various diseases and parasites that local bees have no resistance to.
If you want to save the bees that are actually in need, plant native wildflowers of various sizes so that more bee species have access to pollen and nectar- they range in size from almost an inch long to just over the size of a housefly. Allow dead wood to remain in place(especially standing dead wood, as long as it isn’t in a place where it could eventually fall and cause damage or injury), as that is where a lot of bees will nest and lay their eggs, such as the eastern carpenter bee and the blue orchard bee. Avoid planting over all patches of exposed soil or clay, as that is where other species will either get the materials to build their nests, or will dig into and nest in directly, including California digger bees, Texas striped sweat bees, and southern carpenter bees. If possible, give them a small water source, even just a bird bath or spot you occasionally splash water on.
These bees are solitary, but often gregarious, and come in a wide variety of colors besides just the usual shades of yellow. They can be fun to watch, and they’re just as cute as the honeybees everyone thinks of when they see or hear the word bee. Don’t give them more problems to deal with because of a misunderstanding of what Save The Bees is about!

I'm currently reading "La bible de l'apiculteur" which translates to the beekeeper's bible. Bees are absolutely fantastic! I do not use any pesticides in my garden and plant a lot of flowers for them. My husband manages a grocery store here in France and the store bought a bunch of hives to make their own honey. They also have a hive in a little garden behind glass(it has an opening through the roof)and they use it for education. Every time I go to the store I watch the bees come and go, so relaxing!

I wish I could, friend! Unfortunately with my disability, and because I live in an apartment building, there's no way I could keep them. If either of those were to be fixed (if I was getting better, I could ask my landlord if I could keep a give on the property, ie: roof; if I had a house, I could keep my bed just outside and on good days I could get my hubby to roll me outside so I could do bee upkeep) I would absolutely in a second, talk with the hubs about getting bees! Unfortunately Arthritis prefers to get worse than it does better, and I have outrageously bad luck, so outlook not so good🎱.
Keep extra for me someone. And if you name one of the queens “Jordanne” (my actual name) or “paranoiaprincess”, I would be just ecstatic! No pressure though lol.

You can still have some flowers or something on your patio, etc! There are always ways to help the pollinators!

    • @paranoiarpincess
      @paranoiarpincess 3 місяці тому +1

@@NewEnglandReptile I don't have a patio :( I'm on government assistance and because of one of my for diseases/disorders could kill me at any second pretty much out of nowhere (it's called TTP: Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic purpura) so I have no choice but to live in Toronto because out of the 100 hospitals in our city, only TWO have my life saving machine, so the likelihood of hospitals in small surrounding towns having the same machines is low to none. These machines have literally saved my life twice already and like I said, they don't know if and/or when I could have a relapse.
So yeah, I live in a small crappy apartment with no balconies, because it was the cheapest apartment in the city (govt's covers like, up to 1k in rent, we have 3 people on my plan cause hubby has to help me get to the bathroom every now and then and he can't keep a job with that kind of a schedule...) basically I have shit luck and a lot of “excuses”.
That said I totally just came up with an idea... If you're in. Feel free to just ignore this otherwise.
I'm working on a 3D painting series (I create artwork in bed, it's one of the few things I actually can do on my good days while I'm bedridden) where I paint a woman surrounded by her favorite things. I was thinking I could make a piece where there is a woman who is surrounded in flowers and the 3D elements are all the little pollinators around her. I have a couple of extra canvases so I could totally use one for that. All I would need is promotion for an auction and I would let you have all the proceeds toward your conservancy efforts.
So basically, I could help with just painting the thing and sending it to you, or I could keep it, you could have as little involvement as just telling people, and If tell the winner to send time money directly to you and I'd send them painting to them.
Anyway it's just an idea. I can't do much, but _that_ I could. Just let me know if you're interested. I really do want to help.

Bees are so wonderful, I miss living at my moms. She loves gardening so I got to spend a lot of time out in the yard and with the buggies and plants. I loved seeing the big drones about. Just like spinx moths, if your gentle to them, they never minded me picking them up.Very sweet. I do try to keep an eye out for any strugglers. If there not at the end of there life, sugar water to the rescue! Iv even taken one right in to the house for a quick drink lol I wonder if they sell things for native bees you can get like bat boxes to encourage a wild colony to settle in the area . That would be cool. I wish I had my own place, Id love to have the bats, swifts and critters about in my own yard and the bees. I especially miss our swifts we used to have. :( Thanks to the apartments that took over that lot next door, they all left.

Lived with 2hives all my childhood. Those are tame bees. Wonderful pets. Plant clover!! Clover honey rocks. Blackberry honey is great also. Bee stings help with arthritis. Unfortunately it kills the bee. Best of luck with your hive. Enjoy the hobby. You can take your bees and pollinate crops for money. But that’s taking the hobby to the extreme. Lol

Monoculture & intensive farming as well as general destruction of natural eco-systems leaves the bees very little to live on. Whilst people see weeds as something to be removed, the bees will die en mass. A few floral plants in your garden doesn't equate to the quantity of endemic plants being eradicated by humans. From local councils to you & your neighbours trimming these unwanted, unloved & under-appreciated plants, there can only remain a dwindling amount of food for these important pollinators. As you well know (Kevin) native habitat is a neccesity for the life cycle of such small animals. Whilst you attempt to breed more bees, there is more than likely a plethora of other humans destroying the environment cutting down trees & clearing land for development & using pesticides to first hand eradicate the stingy things which 'may' cause allergic reaction in a very small minority. The best way to protect nature is to stop breeding humans! It's that simple. A globally more conservative approach to humanites population growth could benefit the wildlife (therefore Earth). I fear nothing less than a reduction in the density of humans creeping over the planet, continuously removing the things they don't care about, to build houses & businesses to proliferate the spread of our species will potentially reduce or better still halt the decline. I don't have kids, this is the reason why! Monkey see, monkey do. Unfortunately I am in the minority.
    ❤🌲🌳🌵❤🐝🐝🐝

On another level, is it possible that humans will annihilate themselves thus paving the way for 'the meek to inherit the Earth' ? I wonder if the propensity for humans to kill themselves is in itself a strategic defence by nature to prevent the total humanitarian destruction of her resources & to protect some of the other earthly inhabitants for whom this planet is a sacred space. Especially of late it appears that global instability has been exacerbated & the generated distrust & their misuse of power from most governments (or the global elite if you prefer) is escalating this turning point & bringing the end ever closer in a rapid state of confusion, panic & in the meantime 'I want it now & f#ck the consequences & everyone else' culture that prevails. The few who try to buck this trend are swimming upstream against a tidal wave of 'who cares' & possibly has very little effect on the eventual outcome. I realise you are doing what you can to teach your viewers the errors of their ways & I give credit where it is due, so please be aware that you're not the only person who feels this way. We are each only here for a short space of time & nature knows better than us how to create & manage a planet in a galaxy far from anything remotely similar.
What gives us the audacity to believe that we can do it better, when we are a mere scratch in the existence of time in which our world has been evolving, regardless of race or religion ? 🌍
