    Just a bit of info: You don't need the specialty tool. You can use a 1/2" [6sided] Ratchet-Alan. This is info from a Merc engine mechanic near me, and I also did it. Worked fine.
    Edit: He also told me he has broken those tools several times. And he has yet to break an alan or bolt. :-)

    Yes. You need to remove outdrive in order to remove engine. And I recommend you buy a complete turn motor replacement or you’ll be doing this job again…that’s experience talking!!
    I pulled an old engine from my boat patched it up with new gaskets and starter and alternator and then did ran descale through engine passages. All for not…engine still overheated and likely blew a head gasket.
    It’s expensive but I recommend a complete turn key engine replacement.
    I had a tow truck come lift my engine out. Tow truck has to have a boom that goes high enough into air and is not connected to its under car carrying boom

    I really enjoyed your video, can't speak to that enough. I have a 1994 Bayliner with a 454. Do I have to remove the outdrive to replace the engine? I did not see how you lifted the motor, any advice? Might it be better for me working outside to remove everything I can off motor to reduce weight or is it better to pull all to reassemble to a new motor? I bought boat at auction and it had 9 gallons of clear water in oil pan.

    Great job! I am planning to get a 1977 Mercury Marquise. Engine: Mercruiser 4788052. The body of the boat looks impecable; however, the owner told the seal between the engine and the outside part might need to be replaced. Any ideas, suggestions on this, please? How advisable for me it is to buy something like this? I am a new comer and has zero knowledge on boats. Thank you!

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  3 роки тому

      For having zero knowledge on boats this is a very time consuming job that requires knowledge particular to each engine configuration. You are going to pay a mechanic good money to do this. So make sure you take that into consideration before making a purchase. It will probably be very costly to pay for this work. It will be a big project for you to learn and do yourself. Good luck. Boating is a great fun time, but definitely a costly one.

    • @bayoutrapper
      @bayoutrapper 3 роки тому

      If be says that seal is bad I would be suspicious of transom rot. As Chef said it's expensive, a labor of love. I talked to reputable marine mechanic he quoted me at least $2500-$2700 to change engine coupler, pump, and lower unit oil. I have the original mercruiser manual, watched a few videos, and did it myself in a weekend. Saved about $2000. It's not hard but it is work, you'll probably need a friend to help. Hope this helps somebody. God bless.

    I heard you mention that this is a Gen II Alpha 1. Why do you have an extra raw water pump? My understanding is the Gen II's can handle a full closed cooling system with just the outdrive pump and the engine circulating pump? I am looking at doing a project similar to this and planning on adding a heat exchanger to it.

    Does your starter require a 90amp fuse for the solenoid? The battery was hooked up backwards on for my mercruiser 350 and it tripped the breaker on the motor, but there's no fuse on the solenoid and I think it trashed the starter.

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  3 роки тому

      People and manufacturers put them on some of them. It is not required but probably a good idea. Electrical with anything can be tricky and
      Cost a lot of money ruining things if hooked up wrong. I would advise you to follow what the manufacturer states is recommended for your particular engine.

      it really depends on you. I can have an entire engine out in 45min-1hour and maybe a couple hours putting it back in if I have everything I need, but that is most normally not the case. something breaks or something is no good and needs replaced, or you don't have a tool or part you need and it turns into days. plus if you have a job then ya got to go to work and it takes even longer. you just never know. circumstance permitting
