The road to 1 million!
Hello Habibi
Thanks, Paul! I've only just found you (and became a Patreon) but I've learned a great deal and have already seen improvements in my playing. I love the sound of the sixth interval and enjoyed your earlier video lesson on it. Keep up the good work, it's much appreciated!
Your playing is stunning. Awesome exercise ! Thanks for sharing 😁👍🏻
Always viewing current/past videos from your channel and continue to be impressed by the standard of editing as well as the quality of content being consistently great in every video. This is probably the best channel for experiencing and learning the guitar, always clear and concise with suitable visuals to show your topic. Amazing work and keep doing what you do!
So much love and appreciation for you!
You are amazing please bring more finger exercises like this
I'm feeling rusty since I have almost no time to practice my guitar skills, so I always watch your vids to make sure I can track what's been missing in my guitar training. Thanks man, you really are the GOAT!
Love you Paul Thank you for everything!
I’m going to try this out, thanks Paul!
Your videos are so awesome!!!
This looks challenging. Should be fun to try out. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Paul for this cool excercise! Greetings from switzerland
always some good exercises and theory here! thank you
You are great, Please continue.
Great exercice to apply on all the scales patterns you learn, and it's even better if you do it with each interval from third to seventh
Great video
Man, this is a finger twister! Been trying this on and off for the last few weeks and almost got it down! Thanks for the great exercise!
thanks paul!!
Hi Poul.Yes am gonna try this lesson and challenge.
Thanks a Mil
Man, I just love those cool things he does with the camera
I teared up when I heard you play this. It's amazing and thank you 😊 gezz man it's sounds amazing
Cool. I worked that 6th exercise up years ago. I haven't seen anyone else do it until now. I like to toss that kind of intervallic run into the middle of a solo just to spice things up a bit. Thanks again Paul! Nothing but respect for you brother!!!
Paul, I know this is sounding redundant of me, but I shall reiterate one more time!
Thank you for an awesome summer of guitar! In 3 more days I'll be going back to Uni (I'm in dual credit, so school starts earlier for me rip), but I must say, thanks to hard working and awesome people like you, I can easily say that this is the most I've gotten out of the instrument! Of course even after Summer is over, I'll still be putting work into Guitar, but of not as much sadly. Still, you guys are the best! I highly appreciate your work friend!
RC32 so in 3 days i wont see you everyday here :(?
Ye basically haha. Gonna have a whole lotta work ahead of me in HS and Uni
RC32 gd luck mang
Why thank you!
Awesome excersize, thanks Paul!
A note on picking type, I find it a little easier using pick and middle finger at the same time (hybrid picking or what its called).
Found this one about a year ago, it's really frustrating. But also really fun when you finally make it fast.
At 3:08, you say "fret 10 on the high e-string" but you play fret 12. Just letting you know in case you want to put an annotation there addressing the error. This is a cool exercise and I'm going to give it a try. Thanks, Paul.
Yep its true
Came to the comments just for this. Thank you for the help Paul
Hello dude! Could you help me make the tab? I'm having difficulties.
@@pedrocrush You're right that it's totally pedantic. I only pointed it out because, for anyone who might be novice, I hoped to allay any confusion that might arise for them. It wasn't my intention to take anything away from Paul; he's a great teacher and valuable resource.
@@pedrocrush Not at all; I appreciated the humor. I just wanted to make it clear that I didn't mean to steal any of Paul's copious thunder, since the internet is a notoriously snarky and often toxic place. Thanks for both of your replies.
few comments to say thank you, so THANKS for this new instructing video
I had a guitar teacher a few years ago gave this same exercise except the goal was to be able to go through all the intervals in the scale starting with the thirds up and down all the caged patterns, then 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, and 7ths as they appear within the scale,
Tedious to practice but so bloody worth it in fretboard and interval knowledge on the instrument, have to have a go now see if I can still get through it all.
Seems like a good practice. Thanks a lot man
Nice video, thanks!
Oh! I have to try this and see if I have the courage to upload my video on Instagram. :)
Thanks for a great upload, again, and again. :)
Thanks for that!
A great video
Excellent!
Your fantastic guitar teacher officially a great music teacher.Indeed
Hey Paul, congrats for your UA-cam channel. It’s sound to me to Frank Gambale Chop Builder Intervals with 6ths 🤟🏻😎🎸
Very good!
this is also a great up and down picking practice.
Since i stopped guitar lessons I really neglected truly exercising with my guitar. You really filled that spot in my life and I just wanted to thank you, Paul. :)
Good teacher is inspirational.
Really cool exercise! I'll try that!
... Now I know why everybody seems to be so obsessed with your beard... it's fascinating!!
Thanks for so very nice content!
Hey! I learned this out of a Guitar magazine in the mid 90's when i was 16! ...i have yet seen this exercise anywhere else! Soooo cool to see it here,i can do it up and down really fast, and it is hard to get it down pat, no doubt!
Wesley Dunn share your success, post a vid. I’d love to see that.
Phil Uniacke ..sorry dude, im shy
Wesley Dunn fair enough lol
Yeah, i just never got into making videos, im not really as good as i should be, ive been playing for 20+ years and only about 5 years ago i learned all about scales, i waz always a lead guitarist at heart but didn't have no one to teach me.. Im pretty good now, not fantastic.. But pretty good... And there would be no reason to make videos of my "pretty good" playing, lol... When there are remarkably fantastic players out there smashing it, kno watta mean.... Lol, i aint about to make a video, although my chops are pretty good, descent, have a good day man!
Reminds me of the Jeff Waters spider walk. Made a huge difference to my playing when I started it a few years ago.
Good to see it passed to a new generation :)
Nice Paul!! Pulling an Yngwie!
Perfect
I was looking for that bonomassa lick. and discovered this, this is day 2 it does have a nice flow to it. day 3 play it backwards. thanks again Paul
Even we can practice hybrid picking with this exercise!!!!!🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Great video Paul. Do you think you could do a lesson on electric guitar finger picking exercises?
Wonderful ❤️
Great video. Liked and subscried.
Dankjewel Paul ! Groetjes uit Mokum
At 2:09 you're making it sound like a game of chess xD. A great exercise, can't wait to give it a go! I also like the idea of applying this to other intervals, I think it could be a super way to gain a deeper understanding of interval sounds and relationships for any scale, which should be great when applied to improvisation. :)
Hi Paul. Love your content. Say, what's your thoughts on fretboard note stickers? Ya know for the beginners.
Subscribed
Îm feeling so self-assured! I started doing this exercise when i was a teenager, doing the same thing with all the intervals, from 3 to 7 all over the neck. But... i still play the last ones slowly lol 20 years later
Paul... you are the best!
What is your seat?
It's look very cool !
Thanks
Thanks...😀🤘🎸
Paul really enjoying your vids. You have a great tone and you really know how to make a UA-cam video watchable.
One thing - at roughly @3:09 you say high e 10 (d) but you mean high e 12 (e)
Hi Paul! I love your videos. I'm a guitar teacher and I'm trying to watch all your videos as they are helping me become a better teacher and player.
Playing this scale in thirds is a go-to warmup exercise for me. I never thought of playing it in sixths. Have you tried playing all of this decending as well starting from the high C? Thanks for all the great content.
Jesse Norell ..hey, thats the same reason i watch these, im not a teacher though, but i am teaching my 16 year old, and whats cool is i have learned a lot to. I learned this exercise out of a Guitar magazine in the mid 90's ,and i never seen it anywhere else until this video, and that seemed like a life time ago, keep on rockin, and teaching!
@@wesleyalan9179 I just started teaching my 4 year old son as well. He's a good singer so I'll think he's got the ability to learn music quickly.
Thanks Paul! This exercise feels Petrucci-inspired, making scale practice a lot more interesting! Is it possible to do it ascending?
by chance, diddling around learing to play country, i'd already learnt the first excercise. i'll give the second exercise a go tomorrow morning when i get up.
This exercise is also a John Mayer lick! From the intro of a live version of "I'm gonna find another you".
I miss the telecaster so please bring it back Paul
Ok!
I still struggle with your "Mother of all finger excercises" arpeggios.
2 years and I still can't do it.
A pinned tablature would make this world sooo much better!
Holy shirt. That one is fun.
pretty cool , been doing this with 3ds in minor , never thought of going to sixes though :D a must try Thanks!! :)
Hi Paul , any tips for creating a cover video without violating copyright or videos being blocked ? Thank you so much , I love your videos and more power . Good luck :)
great stuff , when you get as many subs as you I know you dont have tome to answer questions but - my fingers used to move easy kinda like yours but I fell on my guitar hand and it has never really come back and it hurts just to touch the neck but Im not giving up !
Nice Jazz riff dude
I guess if you REALLY want to learn your scales effectively (and not just playing them up and down as you mentioned), you can try this exercise with other intervals as well, although it might not sound as good. You can also do it with other scales.
Hey Paul! Long time watcher now, and an amazing video like always.
I have a question. I've been playing guitar now for 10 years or so. In those years I've been practicing way, way less than I should. I regret it every day that I didn't just play 15 minutes a day, I would've been so much better than I currently am. Right now, I'm a little lost as to what to do to improve my skills. I like rythm guitar and that's what I'm best at, but the improvising and solos I often see in your videos is something I would absolutely love to learn. Last weekend I've purchased a beautiful Gretsch (Bigsby) and I'm planning on practicing WAY more than I usually do.
So now, the question: How do I improve? My minimal knowledge about music theory (and scales even) might make it a little difficult for me to learn the improvising I was talking about. What's the best way of learning about the theory and improvising? I just... want to get better, but don't know how. It's a complicated scenario.
I hope you'll respond! Have a nice day :)

For lead - first focus on just one string - up and down. Restrict yourself to that. Really explore what you can do with one string. Learn to play the major scale, and also the major and minor pentatonic scales just on one string - both with the open string as the root/starting note, and when starting from a particular fret. See how the scales relate to each other (when starting on the same root note) - how long are the scale steps? What notes from the major scale have been removed in the major pentatonic? What do those notes do? What do they sound like when you play them over a particular chord?
Why do I suggest just one string? Because when you only play one string, you will automatically be forced to think much more about note choice. If you learn full scale patterns, especially pentatonic, it is easy to get stuck just letting muscle memory take your fingers around, and your solos will sound a lot less meaningful.
I can also really recommend Justinguitar.com and it sounds like you might benefit from the "Rutbusters" series he is currently doing with Lee Anderton.
Best songs to start learning to sing with guitar? I cant find any videos like these anywhere! Please!
You are the Bob Ross of guitar teaching.
That is a lovely guitar. What kind of fretboard conditioner do you use, if you don’t mind my asking?
I'm gonna try this.
have you ever tried the X-climb from Tosin Abasi? It is similarly twisty and tricky and.. well if it works for Tosin we should probably be doing it!
Paul, do you have any suggestions as to control your left hand little finger? How to keep it closer to the fretboard like all the OTHER three fingers stay. Thank you!
sounds great. i would imagine eric johnson plays this when he practices.
I just found what I'll be doing during the September exams👌
It's easier for me to go by notes, A to F, B to G, C to A, and so on, cool exercise
Me too! Or to think it is just a diatonic sixth starting on each consecutive scale degree
These would sound great with a synchronized delay!
Hey man! I was wondering if you could make a Vidor about tasty blues licks? I'm pretty sure you would nail them all down, and make a pretty good video out of it. Cheers!
3:07 "Fret 10 on the high E string" EXCUSE ME, SIR, THAT IS THE TWELFTH FRET AND I WILL BE SUBMITTING A FORMAL COMPLAINT TO YOUR MANAGER
Me two i always watched and learn from your amazing videos but this is not acceptable
This made me laugh
please ,can u make a tutorial for readingg rhythm notes
nice move
Thelonious Monk's "Misterioso"!!
There's a world outside... just sayin'
Now serious... Great job and great channel. Congrats!
I feel like you in the beginning of the video right now....
Thank you for the awesome exercise though!!
감사합니다. 정말 재미있네요.
First?
The first finger exercise that actually sounds good to practice 😬
It looks like a big spider walking across the fretboard
with alternate picking it is very hard. with hybrid picking i can play it very fast right away.
Great lesson, I will "torture" my students with this, muhahaha! ;-)
Cool exercise! I've been doing something similar for a couple of years now, except going through various different intervals - starting with the regular scale, then jumping thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths and sevenths (and then doing the same for each mode in a particular key). Bloody painful by the time you're done; but it gives your fingers such a good workout and really loosens them up. Great vids my friend, keep up the good work! 👍🏻
Can you make a video on improvisation?
Just do what he is doing, but differently as the mood strikes you.
Can you put the tabs please bro this.is.great
I love the colours of your Stratocaster! I have a handmade sunburst and it needs adjusting. Strings hit frets in lower notes. Any suggestions what should I do?
Sounds like you need to loosen the truss rod and perhaps buy a higher nut. There are really good intructions for this a google away.
Thanks man! I loosened the truss rod and checked the nut and it seems pretty worn. It helped a little, but this guitar is pretty old and i probably need to buy new parts for it. At least new clean knobs and tremolo arm maybe..
Paul, can I ask you something random? Could you play Bold as Love, the Mayer's version, in your Telecaster?
I came up with about 10 chromatic/symmetrical patterns that make great exercises.
Do you have a channel?
Is the tab available for the "one Love" tier , or only for the "Take five" tier?
