    I once trained at home for 30 minutes everyday to be able to keep up with a special Sanda class that was supposed to be 5 hours of training. In the 2 weeks I did that (simple heavy bag training with basic footwork) I improved more in Sanda than I had in the whole previous year I started training in it.

    Totally agree with that. Reminded me back about 15 years ago when I had a 1.5hr Argentine Tango class just before my Samba/Gaffiera class. Initially it took me about 15 minutes to readjust my mind to change from one style to the other but after some weeks, it became easier to adapt and change between styles. With the learning of striking and grappling, it may take a little getting used to the adapting with the change in theory/mechanics/dynamics between the styles but as long as the fundamentals are clear, it is more efficient to train both to better understand the (dis)advantages of styles and learn when/how to apply the right strategies.

    Very good video, thank you! One can train in shadow boxing every day with themselves. Also, much like Chin-na, a good traditional karate-juitsu style will have a complete system to include strikes, grappling, take-downs and joint locks.

    Could you do a tutorial on the multiform technique? I noticed that in this video you use one of the clones to do the Q&A while the others are working the bags. Do I need my power level to be over 9000?

    Winning has made that mini double end bag, which is really a ball on an elastic string. You get it in the ceiling with one hook screw, and to the floor tied to a plastic bottle. And you can train those boxing movement at home and without gloves at anytime.
    Can also store the thing at anytime since you just have to untie it from the hook. I can't think of something simpler and more effective to train super minimalistically at home.

    When I got into MMA I already had pretty good striking from JKD, most of what I have been focusing on is where I was lacking mainly wrestling/grappling but I would agree and train both. Unless you already have one down, then focus on your vulnerabilities

    Ramsey keeps posting videos at the pace of no one else love the knowledge and tips I really needa start training my shoulder should be healed soil from a shoulder injury in wrestling which has not let me do much with my shoulder and fast movement how would you suggest getting back into a regimen? and you think going all out(kicking, boxing, knees, elbows) three rounds on the bag the second it feels better would be a bad idea? It feels healed up ish but still a bit stiff

    Great video. Well needed right now. I practice Kung Fu (seven star praying mantis and Wing Chun) and yangTai Chi. but it is totally legit TMA. In all systems I'm learning applications from all the forms Tai chi included. There's sparring etc. I am learning how to fight to defend myself etc. I totally get I am not learning to cage fight and all that. But totally respect that. I have a friend who does kickboxing and MMA. I would love to try a kickboxing match once. But I'm 45 now and started training at 41. Plus my wife frowns at me when I mention it lol. Any way my friend was going to so me some BJJ since I do admit that my Kung Fu lacks ground fighting. But now with covid19 that's not happening. My kwoon is closed down also so training at home. But since I started listening to your podcast a year and a half ago I got nice little home gym with heavy bag and speed bag and weights etc. But what is best way to home learn grappling? I got some books ? Thank you for all you do man

    Cool video as always. I trained boxing for 10 years, really i should be a coach but i am a bit shy about my fight record and don't have the time. I am learning wrestling now from scratch at 36 and it's the coolest thing ever.

      Well, if you have a professional fight record, you already have a longer fight record than many of the greatest boxing coaches who have ever lived. Coaching and fighting are radically different skill sets.

    Hi Ramsey, I have a question for you. First of all, I apologise if you’ve answered this multiple times before. Watched quite a few of your videos and did a quick search for this particular question.
    My question is if you could go back to your athletic prime (as it pertains to combat sports) and take all the Martial Arts knowledge and technique you have now, do you think you could win fights in the UFC modern day? Not necessarily against the cream of the crop, but I’m wondering if you ever watch, say, a prelim contest and think to yourself, “I think I could beat this guy?”
    Also, just for fun, how do you think you’d do if you could go back in time and enter UFC 1? If you think you could win, which fighter do you think would be the one to dethrone you in the events that followed?

    Would you recommend taking separate classes of striking and grappling (e.g: a gym specialized in Muay Thai and other in BJJ) or would it be better to train in a single MMA gym?

      In the beginning it's fine to take both separately. Just keep it in the back of your mind during both - "What if the guy on top (grappling) tried to hit me?", "What if the guy decided to lower his level and take me down with a double leg?". I'd say until blue belt level separate is perfectly fine. You're probably not trying to be a professional fighter, right?

      Probably the single mma gym. And it's also probably cheaper for 1 gym vs 2.i hardly ever go to a single style gym anymore. Too limited. And theres usually more opportunities for classes, styles, fitness equipment(some more than others), and usually for a single price. Where as youd be paying multiple places just to get the same benefit. However, if there is no mma gym near you, than do the best with what you have.

      @Alfredo Barragan 502 you must have been to some poor mma gyms. my first mma gym didn't even have boxing. But when I went to a different gym yrs later, there was an actual boxing instructor along with wrestling, bjj, kickboxing, wingchun. It just depends on the individual facility and what they can afford to offer, as well as what the student can afford. Not everyone can afford multiple facilities.

    Great video coach! But how do you prepare for this situation if somebody attacks your buddy with a knife? I do Sanda for 7 years and i go through scenarios like this in my mind, to be prepared. But will this really help?

    In my Life, I've found that Grappling while a helluva lot more Technical is much more natural to defend against. Those who freeze up with it, especially Females, are not psychologically prepared for physical survival. One can attribute such responses to five aspects. 1. They view themselves as weak. 2. They have trauma from Violence when younger, especially Sexual or Domestic Violence. 3. They've never had to fight or have felt threatened. 4. Lack of quick adaptability to crises. 5. Overthinking rather than relying on Instinct and quick decisive movements. Now, when it comes to Striking and dealing with weapons, that's a wholly different Game. Many folks fear pain and discomfort. The classic line from "Iron" Mike Tyson says, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched." Many aspects such as Range, timing, Footwork, guards, and blocks require courage, risk, and experience as well as a completely different Mindset and Philosophy from Grappling.

    I think this is wonderful core advice. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people are stuck now with gyms that don't have other humans or heavy bags or mats. Do you have any advice for comprehensive training for people stuck at home with no equipment of their own beyond their own personal gear (gloves, weapons, etc.)?

    8:51 there's a video on UA-cam of an Ex Green Beret (I believe) teaching a Navy SEAL what to do when faced with weapons, they forgo head control and do what soldiers have done for thousands of years, wrestling. They get an underhook and wrist control or two on one wrist control they try to wrestle the person to the ground and isolate the weapon or restrain them for their allies and it's one of the most difficult things even for a trained killer. Dude got stabbed a bunch and the knife guy in the simulation was an MMA fighter

    I expect to be unable to train BJJ and striking for months due to CoVid19. The only heavyweight bag on Amazon.ca (only essential stores can be open) is a MaxMMA Training and fitness heavy bag using water / air for 70-120 pounds. It’s $238 CAD and claims to be useful for striking and grappling. Have you heard of these water / air bags before and anything about their utility?

    i train karate (im still a beginer) and want to star doing sport bjj but i broke my leg a few monts ago iam walking now but iam still recovering so my question is what i can do to protec my once i go back to training i worry about hurting while sparring in karate or doing katas or hurting my self rolling in bjj whats your adivice ???

      I dont know too much so take it with a grain of salt, but do everything slowly especailly bone conditioning. If it has been broken it may need ample time to heal to make sure it heals properly but after that plenty of stretching and strengthening once it's decently strong and flexible slowly start to condition the bone. If you hurt it again it may never heal or take even longer. In my opinion consistency saying do it for 15 minutes 4 times a day is better than once for an hour in many things including bone conditioning. Training breaks your body down. It is not breaking your body down that makes it strong it is after you heal from that that you are stronger so dont hurt yourself more than you can heal in a day if you want to be stronger. Eat healthy food and get lots of rest its almost as important as training but I'm a hypocrite to tell you that.

    Ramsy i was wondering what your opinion is on combat jujutsu, like the jujutsu were you can kick and punch and also go to the ground, since we’re I live there is judo classes twice a week and a combat ju-jitsu class every week

      You can’t kick and punch in combat jiu-jitsu. The only strikes allowed are open hand strikes and only on the ground. If you want to use combat JJ as a gateway to MMA, the strategies to win in CJJ set up a lot of bad habits for MMA- most importantly, while standing over someone in the guard, breaking your own posture to bend down and slap the downed opponent. That’s a death sentence when Upkicks are on the table.

    If your gym or dojo doesn't have a heavy bag available... It is possible to become a reasonably good striker just with pads, shadow boxing and sparring? Or the punching bag workout is essential and irreplaceable?

      Get a double end bag. It’s cheaper, and teaches you a lot more about how to move in a fight.

      Outsmart the stronger person. Always remember that your mind or brain is the strongest part of your body. And use footwork, it doesn't matter how fast or how hard you punch if you can't even land a punch to a moving target. So focus on footwork as well as countering.

      Mike Tyson, Saenchai, Manny Pacquiao. Short for their weight class. FOR THEIR WEIGHT CLASS. Weight matters more. A short stocky guy can be a tall skinny guy.

      In a strictly striking fight the guy with longer reach has an advantage. But if the stocky guy takes him down the stocky guy has a strength advantage. There is also the element of skill, as well as shere aggression that can have a drastic effect on the outcome.

      Yes it does. Pinning an opponent on his back in a helpless position where he can’t fight back or otherwise intelligently defend himself is a HUGE advantage in a fight.

    Why would you say 'killing your friend in front of you' as example. Most of my friends I've walked with freeze when they see a big dog running towards them. And they have experienced it multiple times in their life.

      Except that would be a good example of when freezing is appropriate.
      What else would you do?
      Keep in mind that while our various instincts can often be unhelpful & even counter-productive... they exist for a reason.
      Freezing when faced with a wild animal can avoid aggravating an attack.
      And if you see the animal before it sees you, you may be able to avoid detection.
      I've had close encounters with dogs and even snakes among other things.
      Freezing has avoided problems each and every time.
      On the other hand, when I've actually been attacked (by a person)...
      - instant reactions, no freezing.

      @@BWater-yq3jx It is good, but it is not relatable to most people.
      I also am aware of when instincts can be helpful and when not. The book author Terry Pratchett was explaining it perfectly with a Cat jumping on top of small moving things - it's a good reaction when it's some small animal, not so good when it's the flame of the cord, burning the fuse towards an explosive.
      Anyway, freezing is not always the right reaction, as is running away or fighting, it all depends on the circumstances and that's the reason being aware of your surroundings is the most important skill for survival, topping everything else. Automatic (trained) reactions are usually much better, yet sometimes are still not the best. Yet sometimes the trained reaction is what will give you few moment to be able to think about the best way to follow up and that's more then enough.

      @@BWater-yq3jx Because most people have not experienced such a extreme thing, while more ordinarily cases happen in our everyday life and you can observe the reaction of the people around you.
      Also any sort of reaction is not good or bad, it's all situational. Freezing in the case of the example which Ramsey told us may be a good thing, you never know what such a psycho would do if the observers were to react, they could've been stabbed themselves etc.
      Imagine walking on the sidewalk and a car obviously losing control is headed into your general direction - is it good to freeze or not ? Depends a lot on the circumstances and that's why situational awareness is more important than the reaction itself. Also keep in mind that something can increase your chances of getting a positive result, it's never set in stone that you achieve it, that's why you train sports - to increase your chances of winning and not that training means winning.

    Ramsey, I ask this sincerely. Why did you upvote "unnamed channel". His advice about knife self defence is downright dangerous and 100% wrong.
    You don't train with a sharp knife.
    You freeze against a person truly intent on stabbing you and you are likely to be dead.
    The only thing he got right was "Knives are the most dangerous weapons in close combat." that I agree with.

      Bad news! You have to train with real knives, sharp blades. Or you will still freeze in a real world situation."
      This comment is utterly wrong and I could use a lot worse language containing swearing but I don't as I talk respectfully in general.
      However you gave his comment a "heart" which implies you like/agree with it. This is what I am questioning as he is so wrong about knife defence/training that I had to comment about it. He is passing on dangerously wrong information.

      Or you have to have the Mentality to Survive and be able to adapt, think, and respond quickly to circumstances. Most situations you encounter occur randomly and unexpectedly.

      "Freezing is actually the best way to survive when attacked with a knife." No it is not how does that make any sense at all. if you freeze and someone actually is attacking you eg attempting to stab you then you are likely to be dead. It is not that hard to kill someone with a knife.

      You never train with sharp knife, far too risky for training because for it too be valid it needs to have real aggression, real speed/real power. You make a mistake training like that with a sharp blade that could be potentially fatal.

      @@UnexpectedWonder, problem is eye-brain-hand-coordination is too slow for knife attacks. Your reptile brain has to be comfortable with that kind of situations. Then you can train to not get stabbed while accepting to be cut.
      Spoiler: In training cutting should be avoided as well.

      @@marktuthill7986, let's assume you were Master Wrong oops Wong. Now you have to prepare for your upcoming fight with Ramsey. Whom to choose as sparring partners? Joe and Brad from Fight Perfect TV or some rubber dolls from your favourite toy shop? Now think again about rubber knives.

      @@unnamedchannel2202 Your analogy is false. I am not a master wong defender and actually liked brads/joes channel.
      However again doing knife defense training with a real sharp knife would be stupid frankly.
      You need to trigger adrenaline by doing aggressive drills, you need to use real speed/power with your stabbing attacks and do them from the right range.
      This would be far too risky with a live blade.
      Even hard sparing (unarmed) is nowhere near as dangerous as what you are suggesting.
