Cycling in the snow, Den Bosch (Netherlands) [178]

- The 3rd of February 2012: finally the first snow of winter 2011/2012 fell in the Netherlands. Of course, the Dutch just roll on on their bicycles. A bit of snow doesn't stop any of the cyclists in the Netherlands. They keep on riding their bikes from A to B. Video shot within one hour in 's-Hertogenbosch a.k.a. Den Bosch in the Netherlands. (Some of the footage was published earlier in this teaser: • Video )
music: • Mensenkinderen - 'Kind...
gotta love the kid at 0:36 doing a backtyre slip to showoff in front of the camera
I love the Nederlands. I have been there 100 times and every time, I like it more. The cities, the land, how organized they are.But what I like the most is the people. Any where in the world where I encounter a Dutch person, they can count on me.
Good to know, thumbs up! :)
MCP170119712011 Dank je wel!
well where do you live? maybe I'l come vist ;)
Thank you..i am dutch but a live in italy since 1989.
My mother can't understand why I ride my bike on days like this. I tell her that the Dutch just call this normal.
storm and ice, standing still and falling down or walk..
yep, this is me in Toronto on ultra snow days, just as casual as them except I'm all alone :-(
haha true
I am only rider of bike in my city, everyone thinks i am retarded when i ride on snow, but its a lot of fun to mee. They even this the same when i ride on sunn weather but bicycle is love, i will buy motorbike so i could go faster i already mastered bicycle, 20 km no hands ride, perfect cornering while leaning, perfect braking, there was snow coople of days ago, thin layer i braked that good it was looking like abs is working, i didnt even think of braking there.
Call me crazy but this actually looks like fun. Here in canada people would think your too poor to buy a car if you ride your bike everywhere. We need to change the way we think. Oils going to run out at some point- it's inevitable
100% pedal power is awesome! Your bicycle doesn't make you happy; it's *biking* that does.
And with appropiate clothing it's warmer on a bike than in a car.
Don't forget, its often faster to take a bike then to take a car, from door to door.
Jeff Mcilroy Who cares what other people think. Go and enjoy cycling. You will be fitter, happier, healthier, sometimes quicker and it spares the environment...plus, I'm dutch, it saves you money!
Out of 3 million barrels a day 1.8 million is tar sands and has been operating at a loss since 2015.. oil is ending quicker than you Think, who would buy yoir 1.2 million barrels when russian and Saudi oil is cheaper. Think buisness get 3 quotes and buy the cheapest no patriotism in profits. I moved to Alberta 3 years ago and now I'm a cycle commuter saved a fortune
Maybe it looks like fun, but more to the point bicycling is fun and smile inducing!
Well, you do have to realize that these people have been biking all of their lives (Dutch people get their first little bike as soon as they can walk, at about 2 years of age...), and that is why have excellent balance and (biking) reflexes, which is wat is what you need when biking in the snow.
Rients Dijkstra absolutely.
It's not hard to get this proficient if you bike everywhere you go for some time, say a couple months. It's unconscious even.
Id say this place has a lot going for the communiy, less fuel usage and less air polution. So its not insane at all, great job for those who bikes or bus rather than driving...
ur so right and let us dont forget the main point of al.. its also very HEALTHY..thats why mostly of the dutch people are not overweighted
indeed..amsterdam and den haag are a hell to drive ur car
appreciate the effort that went into the shooting of the video ;) and the soundtrack is just fantastic! you have many great videos but this is top shelf!
Ik mis de sneeuw en ijs, we hadden een waardeloze winter.
One of my favorite videos
I have to agree with Roberto. You are a complete inspiration to us all.
It's a fresh snow, it's rather easy to cycle on it
your cap :)
For compressed snow and ice spikes are really good.
prodazhatovarov it's snow from 2012, that's not really fresh you know
+MrEscen: ROFLOL!
I would like to see a video at the First Aid at the Hospital for the unlucky ones that broke a leg or ankle and needed a cast that morning. Be sure not all end up safe in school or at work.
I'm watching because it's snowing and sticking here in Point Pleasant and i get around only by bike..no car...so here goes my adventure of cycling in snow!
I've downloaded and saw all your snow cycling videos. It's plenty of usefull information there. Hope to cycle through Moscow winter with middle temperature -6 C.
I'm always amazed by the commitment by the Dutch to not only ride their bikes in the rain/snow, but to also do so wearing jeans.
Wow, me and hubby go out through winter. We have good outdoor clothes and love how quiet it is when the weather does this. We do more miles on the bike than in the car 👍😁
Julie Alderson You and your husband are amazing people! 😀
This morning i was commuting to work on snow but it was hard and soft at a same time, it pulls front and back everywhere, i got 1.95 tires without side knobs, they make huge difference in snow. When road has hard snow that vehicles hardened it, its easy to ride
Ik heb deze filmpje al duizend keren bekeken uitstekend filmpje met uitstekendbijpassende muziek brengt nostalgische gevoelens bij mij naarboven en Ik Ben nog maar 42 jaar
It’s like another day for them. Snow? No big deal!
I hope you all understand that the people in this video are NOT feeling cheerful about the weather and biking. I know, I am Dutch and I have been there, done that.
Ronald de Rooij its what we do, standing still in traffic because it snows, waiting twice as long for your train because dutch railway winter schedule sucks just as much.
Ronald de Rooij That is a personal feeling. I am dutch and just want to get from point A to B despite weather conditions. Don't think about it and just do it.
I love cycling in the snow, it combines my love of cycling and my love of snow
It’s just you.
It's fun for like the first 10 minutes, then you're just a miserable damp bundle with a frozen nose and numb fingers. I've never been to the netherlands, but cycling in the snow in canada is a bit risky.
That's some heavy snow right there. Snow isn't really a regular visitor here in the Netherlands. Usually its just rain or a wintry mix :/ This year it only snowed like 4x the entire season, and we even live close to the border xD
That's why even on my city bike I have mountain bike tyres. I find that normal road tyres are too dangerous at high speeds.
My dream country
Update, the same city in Winter 2017: ua-cam.com/video/SYwUUyz6CDA/v-deo.html
Whats the song?
I always cycle between the snowflakes, there's an empty space there... so snowstorms doesn't really affect me.
MrEscen works with the non Frozen version too 😁
Some people tell me i am crazy to cycle in the snow & freezing temperatures, but there´s no stopping the Dutch.
love netherland i was there this summer soo beautiful
Riding a bike in rain and snow isn't fun.... it's heroic. Try to imagine the sense of heroism and autonomy riding your first bike without side-wheels als a kid!
Awesome dutch people! You have the "bike culture" there! I can't wait the snow&fun. Salutari din Romania.
👍
Exposed flash (like the face) can freeze very fast with a wind chill.
This winter it was horrible when I had to go to school it was -12 degrees and 15cm snow 0.0 yeah and then just cycle for 20 minutes long 6 days a week but we are die hards even with storm and heavy rainfall we take the bicycle ^^
Wow que frio! Cómo hace para no cogelarse la cara???
Oh, do i long for some snow this winter! My bike is down below..
Puts our recent weather into perspective
Nothing I don't do every winter here in Germany as well. And it also snowed last weekend here =P
There are differences though. Here I am mostly the exception as a cycler, there aren't many who would cycle in this weather and in general we have much less cyclers and worst infrustructure (if any) and also I use a proper mountain bike for the task ^^.
I love to ride in the snow, expactly drifting is easy in the snow :D
in a snow fall everithing is beautiful
especially at 01:50 giant snowflakes LOOOVEEE it very much , was living in Vlodrop near Roermond a while :)
impressive stuff! Although London's bikers didn't give up in the snow either. Love the kid skidding towards you @38sec
My beautiful Euro city bicyce has a front rack and basket. I carry a few pound in each front pannier. It helps on slippery roads.
As I ride to the grocery store and mostorist pass just inches away, I dream of living in hte Netherlands...
The only thing what makes it dangerous riding in the snow that you have trouble to see where the path is, as you can see in this video.
I respect so much these guys!
I LOVE THIS!! Why can't we do more of this in the USA? I love the song too.
No wonder they are so slim over there!
Because Americas are monopolizing dumbasses that just collect money and profits rather than putting humans before those Profits
The car is just a Monopoly machine, we've built all these highways and cars just to have poeple sit in traffic, become obese and miserable, we're not the best country in world as we claim, we're the best country with putting profits before humans
outstanding video looks like here in Alaska in the wintertime.... lol way to go keep on biking everyone .
Always fun to laugh at your friends when they fall of their bike!
They are so lucky with the weather. In Ukraine or Russia winters are so much more severe, snow often mixed with mud, ice and form some sort of friable substanse. Sometimes it's goes ice, then consistence of snow with sand(which sometimes used to make roads and pavement not so slippery). Wheels of the bike stick in a mixture which I can't describe properly. We were lucky in Kherson. This winter made riding uncomfortable for only 2 weeks.
+prodazhatovarov
How many people ride a bike in Ukraine or Russia when the wheather is good?
+prodazhatovarov in Ukraine winter temperature is: -2 and +5 so we riding on bike.
+Robert Mertin im riding 4 days on week.
+Robert Mertin In Ukraine there is a lot of people, but not so many as in the Netherlands ;)
prodazhatovarov We had one year with so much snow we ran out of salt so we got the situation you described. Icy roads with lots of crashes. We also have the problem of the salt-snow mixture clogging up our wheels. If possible, removing the mudguards during the winter will solve this issue. If you don't want to do that than sticking that crap out between the wheels and the mudguards with a stick found next to the cycle path is the only way to get your wheel turning again. If you mean that dirty icy snow that's too soft, but slippery to drive on, then you're doomed if you're driving into it. Have encountered that kind of smurry a few times too. Only walking is a viable option then...
Great video! :>
Hey BicycleDutch, I'm working on a short and fun video about Dutch way of transportation at DutchReview.com. Saw your clip and I was wondering if I could use a few seconds of that footage? It's non-commercial all, just to inform, and I'll credit you in the video of course! Hope that's okay? Cheers, Ivo
Nice to hear Spinvis
This isn't the music I hear when I ride in the snow or rain to work
The only season I don't ride my bike in the UK. I get terribly cold feet. Good on the Dutch.
London needs the Dutch style cycle lanes Sign up on the LCC
Kudos to the Dutch people. They really know how to enjoy life. I love snow and bicycles, but where I live you'd better not roll on your bicycle. Unless you want to fly ten feet off the ground, of course.
Which Dutch song this, I wanna download it
The song is "kinderen, we drinken op het vaderland" link is in the description...
ua-cam.com/video/WcWHwpHkkdA/v-deo.html Here's the video on the band's channel. It has a free download link, but I don't know if it still works.
see link in infobox
Here in Canada people won't even ride a bicycle on a beautiful summer day. I love the Dutch.
and stroopwafels...
This music is lit.
It amazes me you guys don't switch to wider tires, with that kind of weather.
Does it look like that's needed?
how wide must they be? If we go any wider than the standard biketires we'd be putting mopet tires on them.
Smaller tires put more pressure on the road per square centimeter ! (0.16 inch / 0.01076 sq yards or whatever prehistoric system you use)
When it starts snowing - I yearn to migrate to a warmer climate!
When I was a child I used to wrap clothesline rope in and out around the tire and spokes, sort of like chains and rode around in the snow. This was in the U.S.
shouldn't they be using their light?
Yes they should, but it's easy to forget
Great video! They don't seem to have any trouble with the snow.
Love the video and song. Everyone looks happy on their bikes - even in the snow!
In the UK cyclists continue to be largely overlooked sometimes even despised by car drivers, van drivers, taxi's and buses. There just isn't the respect given to cyclists in the UK. London - and the UK in general needs to wake up and realise the huge benefits cycling offers, and to start creating a better network for cyclists (esp.in the cities) by providing greater incentives to get people out of their cars.
So It's middle of the summer (35*C) aaaaand I'm watching this.
Did your dream come true?
Why they don't use lights ?
Adam Sobański most are just lazy or ignorant. If their is an accident the motorized vehicles is always guilty, so I guess their feeling safe knowing drivers will be very careful
The eye adapts better than a camera: to us it might be a bit dark, but out there it's bright enough to ride without a light. When it gets dark, the lights will go on. Riding in the dark in the snow, means my traditional dynamo will slip on the tyre, so you have to firmly push it onto the tyre to produce some light and make yourself more visable (than my reflective jacket already does). On safety: as you can see in the beginning, both cyclists and cars adapt their speed. You want to ride slowly at crossings, so you can stop if a car or cyclist cannot. But on straight car lanes or cycle paths you can speed up a bit.
very very cool video!!!!!!!!
How are they not slipping everywhere. Do they all use studded tyres in the winter?
No the Dutch do not generally use studded tyres. Normal Dutch tyres have enough grip also in snow conditions.
Where can I buy these type of tyres and would they handle black ice like we get on untreated paths in the UK?
gizmo191 Slow and steady movement of the handlebars and good balance are more than what you need to handle snow although normal road tires are less than ideal.
gizmo191 Buy a bike with wider tires and a good profile on your tires change your tires regularly cause bike tires just like car tires will wear. But even then...
yeah we do slip and fall on our bottom. You get up and get back on the bike again. It's as simple as that.
gizmo191 There's a website called dutchbikebits. They have all kinds of parts for Dutch bikes. Just make sure you get the right wheel size. 28 inch seems to be more prevalent there.
Очень нравяться зимние поездки на велосипеде! Кода сугробы не большие я ездил !
southark07 not loonies, but I don't think people in Moscow would venture out on their bicycles in such snowy weather
The Dutch have the model for all the world to follow.
This is healthy on so many different levels. We don't need a car for transportation. I would move to the Netherlands. In the USA, if you dont own a car ,you are a failure. Terrible philosophy.
its my opion three wheels are better than too on the snow
wonder how much is the price gallon of gas.....
felipe murguia It's not so much about gas prices. The geography is very flat, there are bike lines everywhere to separate traffic, and most all the country is very 'dense'. For a lot of people their jobs are no more than 5 miles away. Small-scale supermarkets are within a mile unless you're way out in the rural parts of the country. When it becomes that convenient to bike, and you add all the pro's that bikes have over cars, you see why there are more bikes than people. It's some exercise, practically free (if your bike cost more than a set of tires, you're doing it wrong), and it allows you to maneuver through alleyways and urban centers.
I live in a small village (3k pop) but an 80k pop city is a mere 3 miles away. It takes me 30 minutes to get there, and that is if I bike at a very leisurely pace. Everything is so close by that I don't have a drivers license, let alone a car. Which is rare for someone my age, but it works for me. And on my income, not having to deal with road taxation and car repairs and gas suits me just fine.
It makes for very safe neighborhoods and mellow streets.
Of course, in a geographically diverse and HUGE country like the US, this just wouldn't be doable. The infrastructure and the culture are too different.
felipe murguia At this moment (and it is cheap right now) more than 7,5 dollar a gallon
But it has been around 9 to 10 dollars last year, because the taxes are really high on gas and diesel.
+felipe murguia Today, 21/2/2016 the price is 1,29 euro for 1 liter of regular fuel , convert that to 1 gallon in dollar, you get 5.40 US dollar , how much is 1 gallon of gas/fuel over there ??!
At 2020-01-03: the price is 1,806 €/l at a USD to EUR rate of 1,110 $/€ and 0,264172 gallon/l which means: 7,588 $/gallon
Need to see this in the U.S. Get all the lazy's out of there cars.
That looks fun
Wow...more power to them
Mooie Den Bosch❤
Respect
Leuk liedje. ABN-accent 2028.
I had American friends over and they were amazed and off course horrified when they saw people riding their bikes in the snow. Americans are easily horrified (no helmets?!)
Over-protection is a horrible part of the anglo-saxon culture...
I live there beautiful
This is fucking awesome! I will take my roadbike and try going race speeds somewhere out in the country!
Maybe not such a great idea.
*****
I don't have one lol. I tried riding a race bike in the snow. It's a bad idea, but fun never the less
The amount of rubber on a racebike is far less than on a Dutch bike.So the grip on a racebike is far less.I am always in admiration on the race cyclers in for instance the Tour the France. How they manage to stay upright on such small tires!
Computer Addic
I used to wonder how Dutch bikes stayed up when I rode a mountain bike.
It's simple physics, the faster you go, the easier you stay upright. When you ride a road bike with regular racing tires, there's no point at which you're balancing or actively trying to stay upright
28's are not my type of bike. I have an old road bike, but I'm not using it anymore, because when it's rainy, calliper brakes do not perform well at all. I use mountain bike, 26", no suspension, V-Brakes, of course, threaded tires, rear rack with custum made mount so I can have it mounted in front, rear rack, also custumly attached, bmx handle bars, dynamo powered custum LED lights, basket custumly attached on front rack, pannier bags on rear rack. I didn't made it for speed, I made it as cargo bike, that thing's a tank. These snow filled roads in this video? Should be no problem at all.
I ride old russian road bike here in Saint-Petersburg. So, I used to care about dirt on rims and braking perfomance. And the solution was to replace rear wheel to another one with single speed and coaster brake. It's enough for some flat city like our.
marchlander1 No Dutch person except a complete freak ever talks about their bike like that. A bike here is just a tool to get you from A to B. Nothing to get excited about.
I guess I'm a freak than. I just love bikes. Oh, maybe saying I love it would be gay? Well, I like bikes though.
aku bersyukur tinggal di Indonesia .... tidak ada hujan salju brrrrrrr ......
Station east
fun, but you need more snow!!!
Is there any video that can be more Dutch than this? 😜
We need this kind of struture conditions in North America!
Cool
So few people use their lights
The dynamo slows you down.
@Johan Sterk
The old fashioned dynamo doesn't work anyways with snow.
In the UK I would hardly see any cyclist in RAIN let alone snow, at least most would not venture out unless it was a dry day with the temperature over 10c, let alone 0c and in heavy snow..
I did it down the coast when the real feel was -6 ;) @ 5am.
Even under 0 c they just go!With salted bike lanes of course.
Alan Morr we have a word for people like that: watjes.
Well I will have to admit Tsa that there are millions of 'watjes' in the UK, including myself who only cycle in nice sunny weather in the summer time, we here in the UK should all be ashamed of ourselves, unlike the Dutch who are very strong and go out in their bikes in all kinds of weather
@@alanmorr3635 It's because of the erwtensoep.
when its snowing here in the netherlands, (when it is) i usually pick my mountainbike to go trough to work, much safer to cycle then with my slippy road bike
@lucioscp3 would take n America centuries to get there
Oh. Hell. No.
Take my word for it, most are thinking ''Fuck this snow !!''.
On the contrary, we continue: ua-cam.com/video/h_ztmI92Xzc/v-deo.html , and ua-cam.com/video/2rETLfzQrIw/v-deo.html
people's faces aren't happy)) but the music is fun))
Have 10 beers at Plein 79 first.
yep, indeed.. this is normal to Dutch people
0:38 drift
People in Poland find it unthinkable to ride a bicycle when it's snowing. Well, they find bicycling unthinkable when the temperature falls under 10 centigrade.
Guess what! ... It might look cold but all the people on this vid feel very warm. When we bike, our bodies move and thus our body temperature elevates. Especially, when the weather conditions are poor (rain, wind, snow, cold, etc). It's harder to bike and so our bodies have to work harder/use more energy and the temperature elevates more. It's better to move when it's (very) cold outsight than to sit still (e.g. waiting for + in bus or tram)
+ healthier! (building up resistance against fever, getting a cold, etc).
Cheers from Holland!
Iene MieneMutte (p.s.: Of course there is a limit to the amount of snow and the possibilty to bike)
Iene MieneMutte Yeah man but what about you face, feet and hands? Those don't get warm.
Iene MieneMutte
I agree. I cycle all year round except for very harsh conditions like big heat from which is much harder to defend yourself than from rain or light to moderate frost. Cheers from Grudziądz, Poland,
UltraFighter18 Ever heard of mittens/gloves, woollen socks, scards/shawls, winter caps/hats? ;-)
