I’ve been thinking about a pair either for every day wear or to have taps added to dance in. They’ll be ok after a little rain. Here are some notes about high quality/hand made leather shoes from a tap dancer (the only difference is sometimes a reinforced shank, sometimes a built up toe sole and the addition of large metal plates). 1. To break them in faster - you can put on thick socks and blow dry them (don’t wet them first) until you feel the heat start to make your feet hot. Wear them for an hour or so to let them cool. This essentially speeds up the natural break in process that happens with your body heat. (I know you had no issues and don’t have a hair dryer, but figured id share my knowledge 👯♀️) 2. There are a couple of things you can do to improve grip - the first is to lightly score the sole or hit it with a little sandpaper to speed up the normal way leather scuffs and gets less slippery. Alternatively (and what I will do when I get a pair for daily life) you can get a rubber sole added like mentioned in other comments. These come in a variety of colors and thicknesses so you can get one that isn’t noticeable. These are easily replaced and can significantly increase the life of your shoes. They can be half or full sole and should particularly expensive. 3. If you wear these and it rains, they’ll be ok. A little water won’t ruin them. You don’t want them soaked through or sitting in water, but a little rain isn’t the end of the world. The rubber sole can also help with this because water can’t be absorbed through rubber. Thanks for the review! It’s probably pushed me over into the definitely buying a pair of AD shoes side of things.
I’ve been looking for this type of heeled lace ups for over forty years. I did come close but they were short lace up boots, with the same heel. They were so comfortable until my daughter borrowed them for work and I got them back fifteen years later. The orange ones take my fancy. I still love the deign and adornments of this design.
I took mine to a local cobbler who was able to put on a full rubber protective sole for only $25! They will stay on for ages, protect the whole sole, and it is much cheaper to replace the rubber sole than the original leather sole!
Don't worry about the wear on the soles. It's supposed to be like that. The "scuffing" of the sole is part of the breaking in process of shoes with leather soles. The scuffing is actually what gives the grip to the sole of a leather shoe (they're a little slick at first but then the sole roughs up and they don't slip at all). It's just something we're not used to with modern rubber soles. I thought I wouldn't like leather soles at first, but I know prefer them to modern soles.
I love the combination of these shoes with the ruffled socks! I have a couple pairs of AD Edwardian boots and they are so surprisingly comfortable. I'm a wimp about uncomfortable shoes, but the AD leather quality is so nice that they mold to your feet quite easily.
I ordered the more neutral colors myself, but I appreciate seeing the wear test. I love the blue. And yes, it would be interesting to see how the Londoners compare to these.
FYI: the sole is covered in a protective coating. It will wear off over time and you just need to add moisturizer (maybe mink oil) to the soles regularly. So it won’t be slippery anymore. My soles are completely missing the coating now and I love them. The shoes themselves could use moisturizer every once and a while because leather is skin and needs moisturizer too. AD has shoe care products. Lustre cream is the moisturizer for the body of the shoe. I have a pair of buckle shoes I’ve been wearing at work (45+ hours per week) for over 6 months. With plantar fasciitis. I have NO COMPLAINTS and will never ever not wear AD shoes to work again. I abuse them, so we have Shoe Care Saturday at my house, where we sit around and chat and take care of our shoes.
I have the Londoner shoes and just love them! It took me a bit longer to break in but once I did I don't think I have ever had apair of shoes that fit so well.
I got the tan Londoners, and they are gorgeous! I unfortunately can’t wear them yet, as I still need to have a surgery on my borked toes first, but that’s fine. Well, it’s not fine, but I don’t have a choice. I was worried that they may not fit. I have wide-ish feet. Not super wide, but wide enough that narrow shoes usually don’t work. But the big issue for me has always been that closed in shoes press really painfully on the top of my feet, because I have banana feet. My arches and my insteps (the top curve of my feet) are crazy high. Super, ridiculously high. Great for ballet, not so great for closed in shoes. Turns out, all I needed was to wear Edwardian style shoes, because they’re made with a very curvy last. They have that instep curve to them. It’s wonderful! I ordered my usual size- I’m actually between an 8 and a 9 year n Aus shoe length. So US shoes would normally be an 8.5, but I got the 9 for that extra width and they fit perfectly. (Australian shoes only increase in length in full sizes, the half sizes increase width only, so I have to buy 9s even if they’re usually slightly too long for me). I can’t wait to be able to wear them every time I leave the house. I won’t bother putting a rubber sole on the bottom, as I’m a wheelchair user, so it’s not necessary for me. Which hopefully means they’ll last me the rest of my life. And considering how much they cost, I really hope they do!
It might be easier to get on with a shoe horn. I think those type of shoes can be resoled when the sole wears out if you can find a cobbler. A lot of modern shoes it's just as cheap to buy a new pair. Where I live sometimes people who wear cowboy boots still do this. I don't see as many anymore but I think they still wear them for country western dancing and riding and I don't do either.
Yeah, our only cobbler is the western/ tack shop cobbler too. Over here in SE TX, there are still many chances to wear out cowboy boots since some people also wear them all the time and to work etc.
The blue ones! Those are the ones I want. Oh well, too far out of my price range. I’m so happy that I could see someone enjoy them. Thanks for sharing.
I just got a pair of the blue bernadettes too and have been quite uncertain about how to style them since my wardrobe isn't the most Edwardian. Thank you for the inspiration! Will have to think about getting those sticky soles to protect them a little too I think.
The Oxford Clares are my favorite walking shoe. The solid heel will have you walking miles. My grandma did. Protective shoe care to repel moisture. Also, I think the newer shoes have the rubberized soles. But, scuffing up the bottom is exactly what is needed to have nature anti skid.
I love mine. Like you said the shape of the shoe just hugs your foot. They only rubbed a little on my pinky but I didn’t get any blisters. If anyone is wondering about sizing, I’m normally an Aussie size 11 & bought the 12s. They fit perfectly. Will have to get more of their shoes/ boots.
I got a pair of Londoners, and they are lose around my heels, but then thats common for me in all shoes. I haven't worn them out yet, need to get heel guards, and we have had a lot of rain in the last few weeks, and we live on a rural property so didn't want rain and mud on them!
Speaking of lasting a long time, in the early 80's, my grandma wanted to give me a whole closet of really well-made old shoes. Big regret in my life. I didn't envision my feet ever fitting them or having kids whose feet fit and also had a style to match. But...genetics I guess? I just hope she gave them away and they are still treasured by someone. I think I made her happy being a kid who was obsessed with her style and closets. Thanks for showing this review. This is my favorite style from the company as well. Too bad I am such a barefoot/ Zero shoes person, which has helped my plantar fascitis. I do want to try some though.
I'm glad you enjoyed it despite being in the lifestyle of barefoot. But if you are going to wear shoes they might as well be fabulous ones. It's sad to hear about your grandmothers shoes, I hope they went to good homes
I've had the Gibson shoes for about a year or so by now, taken them on long hikes and walks, and I've never gotten a blister or anything from them. That's a lot better than what I can say for most shoes! These particular styles were made to be walked in, even though they're heels, so it's not a surprise they ended up being nice to wear. The leather gets softer the more you wear it, so don't be too worried if it's a little tight/uncomfortable at first. I find the shoes are more comfortable worn with thinner socks (thick ones tend to feel too tight) or tights, but they're not something you *have* to use. The wear on the soles is normal, mine are pretty worn down lol You'd care for them the same way you'd care for any other leather shoe, polish them every once in a while, I find the tips of the shoes need to be polished the most frequently. Waterproofing is a good idea as well, so they're protected just incase you get hit with heavy rain again.
@@justalittlegothic7044 I don't own any of their two-toned shoes so I can't make a definitive answer, but looking at their website right now, there's a transparent/neutral shoe wax that looks to serve a similar purpose. I don't believe there's a lustre cream currently out that matches the blue color of the shoe, but I imagine you won't need to polish that area as much, so getting just the black for touch ups on the toe and heel area might be ok.
I have the same ones. I have little blue in my wardrobe, but I thought these were more neutral than the brown and tan versions. I love mine so very much. They are so comfortable. Also they were perfect out of the box. No blisters at all for me. I'm fortunate that AD 7½ are perfect on my feet. If you take sandpaper or a nail file to the bottoms of your new shoes then that gives them a little more grip. Or, as others have mentioned, a good cobbler can re-sole them for you.
@@justalittlegothic7044 and they go well with jeans that way, too. Blue jeans are a neutral (in my opinion), so I think these Gorgeous blue Bernadettes are neutral as well.

I had a hard time deciding what color to get when I got mine and I ended up with the blue same as you. I haven't worn mine yet but I have worn my Londoners once or twice. If you haven't yet I would definitely check out the shoe care section of their website, they have a lot of info. Also about the wear on the bottom, in their shoe care videos on their UA-cam channel the shoe they demonstrate has a pretty worn sole so I think that is super normal. You just might have to treat it so it stays water resistant.
I'm so excited to see your Bernadette's! I too ordered a pair on the day she debuted them for pre-order but I've been living in China now for almost 2 years so they've been sitting at my home in Florida waiting for me to come back. I'm coming back next week and I can't wait to try mine on. Thanks for getting me so excited for them!

This is a great review! I have the ivory pair (and am hoping to get the cherry red Londoners) but I haven't gotten the chance to wear them yet because I'm still in relative isolation in America. The shoes are super snug on my ankles, so I was worried about blistering. It's good to know you didn't get any pain from them and they wore well!
Yeah I don't know if I'm unique in this non blistering. I also have the cherry red londers that I should make a review on just because these were so amazing
I have them in the cherry and brown color. They are super comfortable and are very true to size (and are probably the best fitting shoes I have). I personally like to wear mine either with stockings or low socks as I had the cherry ones give me blisters on the back of my heel once, but I also just tend to have more sensitive skin and that was when they were brand new. I've noticed that the back has become softer as I've broken them in.
I just got mine and I’ve never had shoes fit me out of the box. They are amazing!! Love your styling of them too. P.s. my little conure says hello to yours!!
Yes, please review the Londoners! I really appreciated your test and review. Those Bernadettes and Londoners and others are on my list. Presently, I have a few pair of the early 20th century styles. I have worn the T-strap styles the most and have had no discomfort, surprisingly, as I have one smaller (2 sizes) and slightly deformed foot (polio.) After seeing your experience, I am sure i could wear the Bernadettes i have been lusting after! Oh, by the way, your vid just popped up in my feed and i immediately liked and subbed. Good work!
I know AD has several videos on the care of their shoes. But I love how they are shoes that are made to last. I'm curious what other shoes you got. I'm jealous I have been wanting my own pair of AD and/or a Bernadette shoe myself. But I can't really do shoes with heels at the moment.
I'm recording a review of the second pair right now. Honestly though for heels I barely feel it, it would be great to test them before you buy them but online shops.
This is a wonderful video! I've wanted a pair of the Bernadettes ever since I saw her video introducing them, but didn't know anyone who'd bought them who could tell me how they liked them. Alas, they only come in average width, however, and I definitely need wide width. I wish I knew how they'd respond to shoe stretchers. In theory, and fully leather shoe should be able to be stretched, right? If/when I ever save up enough to buy them I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best!
Those are soo cute! And yes to a review of the red ones! Been looking at those or the gibsons (...or the brown benadettes...so many choices!). How was the size you purchased compared to your usual size? Excited to purchase my own soon.
They do look rather comfy! A tip for wet (and even soaking wet) leather shoes: fill them up with crumpled paper (type newspaper, or tissues), let them overnight in a not too hot room, remove the damp paper, and your shoes are ready to wear again. And yes, regular shoe polish does protect them - and your feet - somewhat against rain. Oh, and should you want to wear a more modern shoe with the same comfort, try shoes from The Art Company.
I have been wearing Londoners myself for the last two weeks! I would also be interested in seeing a wear video! (though I'm not sure how much a stick on sole pad is necessary)
I wish I could buy them, but the import taxes here are so expensive. I really can't afford them. But thanks for the video. It was really informative! :)
firstly thank you so much and secondly, yeah they are really expensive for me as well I had to save up for these for a while, shipping is also so expensive
@@justalittlegothic7044 Thanks for your reply. That is so good the know. I have ordered them! I'm so excited. Can you remember how long it took to get here?( I'm in Australia too)
The main reason these are so comfortable and adjust to your feet is because they are made of LEATHER!!!!! I hate modern shoes made out of crap. Why you were reluctant about wearing leather just staggers me. When I was young all shoes were made of leather. Now we have mass produced cheap uncomfortable garbage.
Just a tiny little comment on the "sustainability" of real leather versus faux leather...as Stella McCartney pointed out when criticized in her designs for using faux leather, real leather is actually NOT biodegradable the way people think it is. The entire point of the tanning process is to keep leather from breaking down and biodegrading over the years. Leather items have been found in graves near the Mediterranean and Scythian by archeologists which are said to be over 2500 years old. And before anyone comes at with with "well they were in a very dry environment," I'll remind everyone that of the things which have been brought up from the wreck of the Titanic since it was located in 1985, several pair of leather shoes. The body parts deteriorated, and the skeletal remains decalcified, but the shoes remained with "the leather is perfectly preserved," according to Robert Ballard. The tannin in the shoe leather had apparently resisted the bacteria. There are several environmental downsides to the tanning process which still relies on fossil fuels and the burning of coal-tar mixes...plus. there are the adhesives used. I'm not saying that faux leather is any better in that final respect, and it's still a hotly debated issue with proponents ofc claiming that it's a more environmentally friendly process (even though they admit it takes 500 years for faux leather to degrade and that it is better to burn faux leather products that have outlived their usefulness rather than through them away, as burning faux leather is many many times less toxic overall than burning real leather). In point of fact, BOTH faux leather and real leather have negative effects on the environment and neither one is really that much more sustainable than the other. So I am not here to say one option is better than the other. I just wish people would stop preaching that leather is better because it's naturally biodegradable. There are leather shoes hundreds of years old in museums all over the world, dug out of graves of varying types, from very dry to very wet--and some brought up even from the ocean depths--and they would not still exist if leather was *so good* at degrading on its own.

Good work!
Awww thank you so much and the review is coming soon!
I want a hair bird. Thanks for the shoes review, love the style, not so much the price so it is really helpful
Birds are the cutest
This is a wonderful video! I've wanted a pair of the Bernadettes ever since I saw her video introducing them, but didn't know anyone who'd bought them who could tell me how they liked them. Alas, they only come in average width, however, and I definitely need wide width. I wish I knew how they'd respond to shoe stretchers. In theory, and fully leather shoe should be able to be stretched, right? If/when I ever save up enough to buy them I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best!
Surely they would but maybe you can email them about it. I found that they responded very quickly
@@justalittlegothic7044 Why didn't I think of that? Thanks. :-D
love the background fairy music in your video ❤️
this is pretty cool, I need to get the same blue shoes to match a blue skirt I have.
I do love the blue it looks a little unique
Those are soo cute! And yes to a review of the red ones! Been looking at those or the gibsons (...or the brown benadettes...so many choices!). How was the size you purchased compared to your usual size? Excited to purchase my own soon.
Thank you and the size was actually spot on I was so impressed, I ordered my usual size (9) and they fit perfectly.
I might look into them and thank you probably I'm not caught out in the rain though
The Bernadettes are awesome! I got the blues because I pretty much live in jeans! 💕
the blues are amazing the black toe makes them a little neutral which is nice
I plan on cutting up a bunch of rubber stick ons to cover most of the bottom of the shoe before walking outside in mine
Love your profile pic and that would be great, or it would be better if you got one that is big that you could cut down to size
Loved this so much! These shoes are worth every penny! Yes, do the Londoners!
They really are
I have been wearing Londoners myself for the last two weeks!
See a cobbler for sole savers!
Will do
Considering your comments, and after 6 months, how often do you start your day and realize half the day later that you are wearing them?
decently often
You need to invest in a shoe horn-preserve the backs of the shoes and stop your socks wrinkling up when you put the shoes on
Honestly yes I currently looking for one
They're gorgeous
What's your shoe size and are they true to size? I've never worn pointy shoes, should you get a bigger sizer when buying them?
Wet shoes should have newspaper loosely crumpled inside while they dry.
luckily mine didn't get quite that wet
Can I ask how much did you pay for import charges? I really wanted to get them but was worried about the extra expense.
I didn't actually have to pay any import charges, just shipping. Maybe it's just Australia because I never have to pay import charges.
@@justalittlegothic7044 Thanks for your reply. That is so good the know. I have ordered them! I'm so excited. Can you remember how long it took to get here?( I'm in Australia too)
@@vanessacooke8146 I think it depends if you brought a preorder, they will tell you when the preorder ships

You're very right and these shoes changed my mind

Cosplay.
I think I will use these shoes for some cosplay
🤚🏻Can’t see the shoes🤚🏻
