Completely agree. When you are new to things you see a lot of beginner guides and how to's but you usually only get to read about issues like this and how people address it. Being able to visually see the problem solved, however simple it may seem when explained in writing, is especially helpful as a beginner and danagboi below helps prove how helpful stuff like this is when things go bad. Troubleshooting is what derails a lot of people. Easy to get overwhelmed and not know what to do. The commentary is great too and helps keep it all in perspective! Thank you, George! Was ready to ditch my aquascape and start over due to very bad stag horn algae, green spot algae and green thread algae. This was on an ADA 60P tank (60x30x36cm) which was quite heavily planted and had CO2 injection. A small population of algae eaters (siamese algae eaters, otocinclus and mystery snails) wasn't making a difference. After watching this video I trimmed all the badness, reduced the lighting time, added regular liquid fertiliser (2.5ml of Evolution Aqua 'The Aquascaper' daily) and upped my water changes and the tank is now looking just awesome and algae free after a month-and-a-half. Has never looked better. Truly appreciate your excellent tutorials - this is my first tank and if it wasn't for you I may well have given up on the whole enterprise. Now I get home from work a relax for half an hour or so in front of a beautiful aquascape. Keep up the excellent work and thanks again!

Thanks a lot for showing this! Tbh I really enjoy watching proper maintenance videos. I feel too many ppl are ashamed to show this kinda stuff but in reality its rather "normal" to get some type of algae problem and sharing any kinda tips and tricks is always helpful.

Great video, it got everything I wanted to know and more. I'm starting to see some BBA in a planted tank with cherry shrimp. I wasn't sure about what to use to get rid of it but everything you said made it clear for me. Thanks for explaining what to do before, during and afterwards.
George nice video. Glad to see you also have a alga problem. Been fighting brown alga (diatoms) for many years water changes didn’t help. Had to cut back way on the plants added snails and mosses. Feeling much better.. now I just lite cleaning of the filter and water change 50-15% a week. Added my salts. I happy. All the best.
Those surface skimmers are one of those things with large pros and cons.
They tend to be a huge trap for shrimps. Especially young ones.
And they are always designed in a way in which they stick into the tank quite a lot. You need a pretty large tank to reduce the eye-sore effect.
But, they work and pull crud from the surface. Especially small plant fragments.
Thanks for sharing your methods. Amazing some times how simple maintenance can resolve so many issues.

What are the dimensions? It's gorgeous.
My fav bba killer is an SAE. They don't even touch shrimp. I keep 4 in a 40 breeder I use for excess plants. If any nasties pop up in any of my other tanks it get's an SAE for a week or two while I get the tank chemistry adjusted.

Tank looks amazing! Love green neon tetras! Have you thought about putting some Cardinal shrimp in there? Would look really nice. I've heard that horned nerite snails and maybe doing a blackout could help to get rid of Blackbeard algae.
Very helpful video. Had a BBA covering wood plants and rocks. Brushed off and picked some plus more often and larger water changes. Now BBA is gone and my cherry shrimp are breeding like never before
If a master can have algae issues, so do I, hahaha.

Nice article George... physical algae removal is always one solution however, what other chemical/non-physical solutions are tested e.g; lighting period; water chemistry/parameters, some kind of fertz!
Hi George. Great to see another English guy with a big name in the scape hobby. I have a question Re: ferts. Have you ever heard of/used TNC complete or TNC Iron? I just started using them but have found the magnesium & manganese is too low of a level. Would you recommend still using the TNC bit adding my own magnesium & manganese as extras (dry ferts)
TNC Complete should provide enough but if you’re experience definite deficits then dose as necessary

This black bearded algae is pretty much a constant companion for me. It tends to linger in very high flow areas.
But it's also quite magical to see how it crashes once you got your parameters dialled in.
But I have to admit I often leave it as long as the problem stays small. I usually become active whenever the plants suffer from being covered too much.

I tend to get a lot of algae especially BBA on java fern and usually get string algae on my Anubis’s leafes. Another thing is my S.Repens seems to get diatoms on old leaves too. Strange, everything else is fine like the ludwigia so. Super red, hygrophila pinitifida, hygrophila and hygrophila sunset. Pogostemon helferi too sometimes. I found the key is literally daily maintenance...
I have noticed that as dragon stone is made from clay and is natural it seems to leech all the nutrients from it which promotes brown string algae near to the light.

Hi George, just watched this for the first time as I’m now getting bba on the plants at the front of the new 1200 set up. Getting it on the Buces,Anubias including the roots, trident fern and its creeping into the Fissidens.im going to take the reflectors off of my t5 lights reduce the flow slightly on one of my outlets and drop the lighting down an hour. How much TNC complete would you personally add per day to a tank this size as it says around 30ml per week ,but I’m dosing 5ml per day every day ,7days a week . Is this enough to help combat bba. CO2 is via a JBL inline and the tanks got a hell of a lot of bubble to get the drop checker to go green , doing about 4bps. Any help gratefully received. All the best as ever, Martin
Love this video showing the pros have issues too and it isn't all perfect from setup 👌🏻👍🏻 I'm dealing with a different type of algae it's only on my leaves of certain plants looks like green spot algae removed loads of leaves today trying to get on top of it 👍🏻👌🏻
But on another note got the wife's ok for the Aquascaper 1200 instead of the 900 👍🏻 would you say best to run two oase 600 thermo or one will be ok ?

Hi George, thank you so much for all your incredible videos! I have a question about the cherry shrimp. I live in the US (Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.) and cannot keep cherries alive in my planted system. My planted system is as follows PH. 6.3 (ish), GH 4, KH 0-1, TDS 120-140. It seems that the low TDS keeps them from molting properly. I have some in a different non-planted tank where the TDS is around 300 and they do much better. I know the GH and KH are also proportionally related to the TDS. I watch a lot of your videos and videos put out by GreenAqua and am trying my best to keep my water parameters as "perfect" for plants as I can, but that doesn't seem to allow me to keep cherries very well at all. What are your parameters on this tank and how are you managing to have such success with them? Am I overlooking something? Also, is that a badisbadis? stunning! Happy New Year!

A great way to remove BBA off plants is to remove the affected plant and mist liquid co2 onto it .. leave for 5 mins and rinse under tap water , works really well on hardscape too

Hi George, at time marker 5:50-6:00 I see you have a Scarlet Badis in the tank, happily swimming long the front and the hair grass, 'hunting" do you feed it (them) anything special, I have tried to keep one but never got it to feed and it wasted away. Thanks, keep on scaping!!!

Boil a kettle and spot dose black beard algea with a syring under water with hot water it turns the black beard algea pink straight away, works on some other algea as well, do not do it on delicate plants you can do it on an java ferns and anubus and hard scape, don't like to spot dose with chemicals, never had any trouble with hot water killing fish or shrimp..
George...please make a video series on how to manage co2....especially flow related issues

Hi, I'm from Chile, I would like your help. I have a 45 liter aquarium planted. Nutritive substrate seachem add humus, external filter. 5 otocinclus, 9 neons and 10 neocaridine prawns. I have nitrate well but phosphate is very high. In what natural way can I lower phosphate?

I am confused, you mean that you need to fertilize your planted tank extra to get rid of the black algea? I thought that would add to the bio load. I cut a few hours down on the lighting, cut back on food small bit. I clean the glass. But it comes back. the green algae I can live with but the black looks awful. Thanks for the video :-)

Will this work for staghorn algae? Seems the problem got worse when I started dosing and put root tabs. Increased light and doing passive CO2 about to upgrade to full injection. Will be mowing down infected plants but not sure if that and the CO2 will kill it though
"Water change", just tap water? Realizing results will vary house to house what do you recommend for planted tanks? Distilled, Reverse Osmosis, Tap w/ dechlorinator?
I just use tap water, soft or hard. 99% plants aren’t bothered if you give them good growing conditions.
Thanks for sharing this. I've been there too! Someone once told me that release BBA into the water column gives it a chance to propagate. Are you expecting the bits you've loosened off of the hardscape to be filtered out? Removed by the water change? Die? Or just not be able to compete with the plants?

George, why don't you use a Twinstar system?
George what is your opinion of hydrogen peroxide H2O2 sprayed onto algae. I see a few people using it on the other side of the pond. Non toxic and in contact with organic material i.e. algae breaks down to water and oxygen. The arguments make sense and everything seems safe. Mike from Mass Aquariums covered this in a recent video.

Would it be ok to refill a tank straight from the shower if I were to pour in the correct dosage of conditioner in to the tank before refilling? I have a 240L tank only feet away from a shower room, so the shower can reach right in to the tank. I could monitor the temperature of the water going in quite easily, too.
My usual 'four/five buckets per quarter of tank' method is becoming a nuisance every week. I'm getting black hair (brought in from some Java Moss, i think) taking over my swords so would like to do some big water changes over the next month or so but doing it by the bucket and waiting for each bucket of water to reach tank temp is going to take all day!

How important is having a light that is dimmable. I’ve heard you talk highly of Twinstar, but from the research I’ve done, I believe they are not dimmable. How would you address problems with algae with a Twinstar...just reduce hours?

Florida Flag fish (Jordinella floridae) are a good natural control of BBA. They are tolerant of wide range of water conditions. Males are super aggressive so females are a better option if it's a community tank

I have a 120 gallon cichlid tank. For filtration purpose i have top mounted filter. After i do water change the water looks clear. But after a few days the water appears to be yellowish, may be due to the waste of the fishes. How can i prevent this colour and get clear water like all your tanks. Please help

I went away on holiday for a week and turned off the timer for my lights so the lights stayed on 24/7 for 9 days. The algae is slowly disappearing from my tank now that things are back to normal. It is brown algae . If I trim off the leaves with the algae, I wouldn't have anything left, are there any other non chemical options

It was unusually relaxing seeing you clean the tank. LOL. Yeah, I think we've all been through BBA. But, I swear that the cause of it is having dwarf harigrass. Just kidding. I know it's not true. But, it might be. Here's my theory.... My theory is that dwarf hairgrass takes over so much footprint of the tank and it does absolutely zero assistance in soaking up the nutrients. So, while you get this nice green lawn, the water column is becoming ripe for BBA to strike because of how (I think) dwarf hairgrass doesn't really take in nutrients from the water column. Plus, the carpeting effect of dwarf hairgrass traps the nutrients in the water column? And/or, the nutrients in the water cannot get into the substrate because of the DHG carpet? I dunno, just a theory. But, a good way of combating this is fast growing stem plants, which might not be compatible with the scape you are going for. But, it is one of those preventative methods of preventing algae like BBA.... Thanks for sharing!

I had my first BBA appear literally days after I installed excessively bright lighting over a tank I set up 10 months before. Since my maintenance schedule already involved daily fertilization and weekly 50% water changes, this leads me to assume that excessive lighting is a huge factor contributing to BBA growth.

Hey George hope you're able to help me out with some advises..
It was my first time using hydrogen peroxide to get rid of bba 2 weeks ago, and a day after i apply spot treatment with h2o2 i did a 60% water change. As i drain the water down, i up rooted my mini butterfly stem plant at the back and replanted it after getting rid the btm part of the stem and as i was refilling up the tank about 30% left till full, i 've already notice a slight cloudy with the water. The next day , the tank starts getting cloudy and even more cloudy.
It has been 2 weeks now and the water has yet to turn back clear again. I've tried applying ADA Clear Dash once , and ADA Phyton Git, ADA Green Bacter Daily but it doesn't seems to be working ... is there any advises i could get from you ?
I am afraid if i did another large water change i would dmg the colony of the bacteria once again.
* tank had been running for 10months and it's my first time experience cloudy water.
+Aquatic Haus Sounds like a bacterial bloom. I would do daily 30% water changes and add a good bacterial product with each water change. It will clear in time. Also JBL Clearol is good for clearing water. :)
indeed it was a bacterial bloom, and yesterday it became green water after the 2 weeks of blooming. I'll look into JBL Clearol but does a blackout work for such situation ?

George, how do you combat the evaporation and the dreaded water line in an rim-less tank? Do you run an auto top-up?
The water is pretty hard in my area and any amount of evaporation leads to a water line very quickly. My small rimless tanks can loose up to 10% volume in a week without manual top-up.

George this is a bit off topic, but. You're keeping Cherry shrimp with Green Neons and Red Badis. Are you finding the fish are keeping your shrimp population suppressed or are the shrimp doing OK and breeding despite the little carnivores sharing the tank?

OK. I just wanted to check, on a forum, the OP of a thread is claiming his Green Neons are reducing his Cherry Shrimp population, it might be some dynamic of his tank, I'm thinking adequate cover and hiding spots of the newborns. Your tank has a substrate covered in spreading plants, I think that helps. Thanks!

I have a 180L aquarium and I love to do daily water changes of 10% (still I get algae!!). What is your view on daily water changes? Is it too much?
+Don Suomi Daily water changes is fine. But I prefer larger weekly or 2x weekly.
With this way you gonna get that blackbrush algae again soon. They like phorate media like your rock. It means your filtration needs more biologic phorates media. Next step is about your low co2 or fluctuating levels. It should be stable all the time. You can try to overdose easy carbo but you need any co2 meter anyway. Also any algaes likes overdose po4 or no3 ratio. Phosphorates and nitrites ratio should be selected individual to plants you got in . Safe ratio is 1:10 if you use high lighting levels tho
