Please receive this in the positive spirit with which it is intended, but I've never understood the appeal of CB considering all of the alternative communication technologies now available.
Is it about trying to achieve the greatest range possible against technical challenges?
Is there an element of rebellion?
As somebody who works in the rf industry I do appreciate your toys 😉

Hi. No problem with your comment. In fact its a very common opinion. I think back in the early 1980's it was in a small part a rebellion of sorts. Certainly the AM days in the UK with Busby trying to track you down. Many of the people using CB today still have a nostalgic feeling about radio. I think for me its the challenge. I know that if i turn on my network radio using my internet i can talk to people worldwide without much difficulty. However i have a piece of tuned wire in a plastic tube on the side of the house and when conditions allow i can talk halfway around the world. You just get a buzz out of it how radio propagation works. Its a lot of expense and effort for little reward and some people (my good lady wife) will never understand it. Others love the thrill.

I've an Alinco dr135dx set up in my car with a whopping magmount swaying about on the roof, a younger guy in his 30s asked me a similar question outside my local pub the other day.... it actually stumped me! "What do you get out of it?" Was the question, the best answer I had was .... "it's just something my generation did as kids"

Waay back in 82, we had a small group of guys who used to talk on AM on a morning including a milk man aka "Early bird" doing his rounds (still think he was running a burner), another was an ex engineer who used to make his own miniature steam engines, he was also into receiving on his Yaseu. Another had old British motorbikes and he was also into receiving on his own valve equipped receiver that looked like something out a WW2 war film. It all came to a halt when morning TV appeared in 83 as we used to bleed across everyone's TV's, tried switching to FM but just couldn't get the quality and distance for some reason. Later that year I ended up on a group that included a BT engineer who always let us know when they were about with detectors, especially as one of them was running a Moonraker 6 and 250w !!!. two of the group went to class 2 ham and one to class 1. I ended up doing some CB aerial erection for a local shop, which was fun, especially one time hanging off a cat ladder as it was little too short and the ladder to it was a little short, so it was standing on the last rung and reaching for the cat ladder and letting go !!
