Hummer Is Back (H3T Upgrades & Review) | Inside Line

  • It’s the shortest-lived midsized truck in modern history and one of the coolest. It’s the Hummer H3T. With the Hummer brand being reimagined with the Hummer EV, we decided to take a look back at the last truck offering ever to come out of the GM camp. For this Inside Line, we are going to not only give you an overview a 2009 H3T, but show you how it was modified on the cheap.
    This includes upgrading it with a new set of 17x9 Centerline 850 Atlas wheels and 35x12.50 Nitto Ridge Grapplers that were initially fit on with no lift (take that Jeep Gladiator!). While the total production of these body-on-frame trucks make them unicorns in the midsize pickup world, the fact is, it remains a sought-after vehicle.

    Most people originally didn’t want the H3T back in the day but nowadays, it is becoming a collector’s item because there were under 3,000 made

    I wouldn’t compare the H3T to a Gladiator. I own the H2 and a Hmmwv, both are modified with a stand alone off road look but the H3T is a Badass Hummer as well and I have seen them in action along side of H1s & H2. I wouldn’t take anything from them in performance. As far as the dated look. I feel it gives it character and makes them unique.

    I love my H3! Not the T, but it gets the job done! Actually in the process of doing a straight axle swap on it. Parts are hard to come by right now.

    The H3T is pretty rare especially the H3T Alpha with the 5.3 liter V8. The base engine is not powerful enough for good off road capabilities and the V8 is a must if you can find one. Even the V8 is underpowered but it’s a lot better than the base engine.

    • @DrivingLine
      @DrivingLine  3 роки тому +6

      They unicorns for sure. We agree that both powertrains could be better in the power department. A selectable two-wheel drive transfer case and modern 8 speed transmission could have done wonders for this platform. Gone too soon!

      @@DrivingLine It would be cool if you could Sell it and get the alpha with lockers. Then Buy a hummer h3 with the 4 inch rancho kit and swap them out with the alpha h3t and then sale the h3 with stock suspension. Free kit. Put 37s on it and lets see how it does vs the gladiator off road. It would be Neat to see how a v8 fully locked IFS H3t does vs solid axle jeep gladiator.

    • @thejuicer9706
      @thejuicer9706 3 роки тому +2

      @@LNXG8 I love it, but if I could have gotten the v8 I would. It’s sluggish and not real strong on passing somebody on the highway. But the few times I’ve gotten off road, it’s great. I’ve never had to get it worked on or anything, no major issues. It’s fun to drive and does everything I’ve asked it to do. I’ll keep it forever.
      Only problem I’ve had and it seems to be common....
      It’s not a daily driver for me, so if it sits too long, say a week or two or three and I haven’t driven it, it won’t start. Took a lot headaches and frustration but I finally figured out it seems to just be weak connection where the cables touch the battery posts.
      I gotta pop the hood, jiggle the battery cables and it fires right up.

    After the leveling was done , do the 35s still rub at full turn ? Or did the leveling kit fix this ?

    • @DrivingLine
      @DrivingLine  2 роки тому +1

      No rubbing at all on-road. For the light-wheeling it does, we have not had an issue off-road. Though, if you were to disconnect the front sway bar, we could see the tire potentially still contacting the lower portion of the inner fender.

    How similar is the front suspension to a silverado of the same era? Or the Avalanche? Seems like the same design at least. And I know there are a lot of parts for those.

    • @DrivingLine
      @DrivingLine  3 роки тому +2

      It's all 1/4-ton stuff, so it's more Colorado than anything else. Unfortunately, the that gen of Colorado never got much in the way of aftermarket support. The AWD passenger-side drop T-case and mid-tube rear tone rings make them a tough candidate for a solid-axle swap as well.
