- Suezmax Tanker is anchoring at Fujairah Anchorage,United Arab Emirates with the sea depth of more than 100 metres. One of the most difficult anchorages in the world. Anchor is lowered by windlass only, not by free fall. Vessel must by completely stopped and has to have almsot zero speed over the ground to avoid the windlass damage.

It's great to be able to enjoy these videos in my latter years, I'm very thankful for my time at sea, hard to believe it was over a half century ago already... Hope all is well with you Captain.

Yes, it`s happened once when I was the second officer. We were preparing for dry dock in Novorossiysk while drifting off shore. Both anchors were lowered 4 shackles for the chain inspection. After the inspection starboard anchor was heaved up and bosun started heaving another one. However the brake for starboard anchor was not tightened properly and chain started paying out slowly. Bosun and third officer didn`t notice that,they continued heaving up the port anchor. Chain paying out was noticed from the bridge and the officer was advised immediately however paying out speeded up and bosun couldn`t stop it by brake. As the result anchor with 13 shackles were lost in the Black Sea. I didn`t witnessed that moment as it was happened early morning while I was sleeping. It was the sad day.
