Yesterday I jammed for the first time with two stoners. Usually I'm more into punkrock and I don't really know much about the "groove". Now I gotta prepare myself for our next session. Your content is very helpful. To me it's pretty hard to slow myself down.
As a drummer, the problem gets worse. However, you'll learn quickly a better internal feel for rhythm/groove. Taking that forwards into punk rock, there's some nifty things you can do. Sum 41 is the first band to come to mind.
(Speeding back up after doing these tempos for a few years is proving difficult.)
What tuning and fuzz tone are you using?
Get stoned problem solved
Is it just me, or playing it slower to make it conceivable just makes it more badass??
Sounds like a riff straight out of a Queens of the Stone Age or Kyuss album
I'm inspired to steal this riff lol
Inspired indeed
*Tuning for this video* is C# standard.
+Corey Hunter Ha thought you were gonna play Into The Void at first
SUPER HEAVY. From waht I know, drop D is often used as well. Can you elaborate?
Only starting out on guitar - don't know shit :D
It sounds really good even in E Standard
classically inconvenient haha
But you keep on calling it the open E string?
You totally inspired me to play in c standard tuning and come up with a riff that is slowly becoming a song! Thank you.
Excellent work here. This is really a great blueprint for improvisational playing in this style. And it sounds great!
Dude im really hyped i found this account, i have a deep love for stoner rock, but i wanna learn how to understand this beautiful genre better, thanks a bunch!
Thanks for these shapes. Iv got the groove and the fingers I just struggle with music theory. The "shapes" help me a lot cheers dude
Sounds like kyuss
Yeah and Elder.... which draws a lot from Kyuss ;)
Amigo, no encontraba nada sobre componer stoner hasta que encontré esto. Sos un genio!!!!!!
Hey thanks man! Your lessons are saving me money. I like your style. Thanks for your help.
some of the best guitar lessons on youtube! and great riffs too
Step 1: S M O K E
@stickierbuds I'm not using any effects here. I'm using the rhythm pickup on the SG with the tone control all the way back, giving it that fuzzy sort of sound.
Dude, this little gem is gonna change my game! Thanks
"SG" just went from Solid Guitar, to Stoned Guitarist.
They go hand in hand.
This is the best kind of music! Thanks
your videos are awesome ! Thank you so much
Cheguei aqui em 2018...riffs excelentes!!!
Stumbled across your channel and this is your fourth video in a row that I've seen with really great content. Got some really cool new ideas to mess around with, so thank you!
Subbed.
Welcome to the channel.
Stoner rock guitar step 1: Buy an SG. Step 2:Buy a vintage Sunn full stack. Step 3: Watch these tutorials.
Shane Leopard you forgot the most important step: Smoke mad pot
you'll also need a firey red horse fuzz pedal with the 3 way switch.
fuzz pedal
Thanks man, this is def inspirational!
you look like shaggy from scooby doo
Flo Bro funny 'cuz shaggy from scooby doo was actually such a stoner :p
+Jeroen Verbeeck Actually the original creator of Shaggy and the voice actor both never thought of him as a stoner. They hated that people acknowledged him as one.
Then in the 2000's we have a movie where he meets a chick on a plane and her name is Mary Jane, and he's like "Man I love that name".
You make me wanna grab a guitar and start learning to play it. I couldnt live without stoner rock in my life..
@prolixian As BadassMo0ze commented, Queens of the Stone Age is a really good place to start. I also love Kyuss and Brant Bjork. All three are related. Josh Homme from QOTSA and Brant were in Kyuss together for a while.
you are a natural talent...keep it dusty
this is a fantastic lesson man
Your lessons are great.
@MightyOdin Thanks, always nice to hear :D
7:57 sounds like "Overworld" from Final Fantasy X
That's so sick dude... Thanks a lot!!!!!
I thought that you just needed to be a pothead.
Says "Dave Grohl", hah.
***** Can I have your computer, clearly you don't need it anymore
Dave Grohl Says the guy that doesn't get a joke on the internet.
***** It helps tbh
Being a pothead definitely helps, inspiration comes so easy when you're stoned
2020 calling for awesome riffs!
@stickierbuds I was on the treble pup in that one, and using my Peavey Bandit, not the Toneport.
Great Video! Glad I stumbled across it! Following.
This lesson is really great, thanks! Any chance of some more stoner riff ideas?
Yeah, just me. I am planning to upload longer compositions, just don't have a lot of free time at the moment.
Thank you ! Much appreciated !
@gsogoz Sleep are also amazing, not as relaxed but very groove based.
sounds like COC. very very cool!
Good lesson thanks, we are doing some fishing doom music
This is a pretty good lesson for beginners.
@prolixian Seconding the Songs For The Deaf rec.
Also, definitely check out Kyuss. The album Welcome To Sky Valley is some amazing stoner rock.
what amp are you going through man? which pedals are you using? Sounds awesome
what i like about your lessons more tha n other lessons is how you offer more freedom than people who go 'do this, do this'
@gsogoz Fu Manchu is also a very good place to start. Especially the older albums. Great lesson! Thanks!
OMG that final riff sounded A LOT like a Jerry Cantrell's One !!!
Awesome lesson! Was wondering how do u get that perfect stoner rock tone? Do u use a big muff fuzz pedal
@ErroSilvae I'm using the Toneport here mate, so not sure why you even bothered.
This is fucking illuminating! Thanks!
You've got to smile some more dude :)) I like these videos, learned much, thank you ...
Thank you so much
Great Stuff! Thank you. Hope your health has improved.
Great Riffs, Dude !
Whar Amp/Pedal are you using on that lesson ?
epic lesson
Funny enough the slurring technic is something I used with my DUI, really sealed the deal.
@grimhorgh76 I love Welcome to Sky Valley, was listening to Demon Cleaner only this morning in fact! Any other suggestions?
Gotta love the lesson from Shaggy!
Yay an Aussie great stuff mate.
Ive been playing stoner rock but my tone sounds more Sabbath like. But to make it even sound more dynamic and heavier I guess I have to change the tone a bit to sound a bit like the tone in this video. Its all about tonage. Awesome vid.
Well that's kind of my point. And actually I take back what I said about your point being null and void, you're right. Really the same reason you use a Peavey Bandit is why I use a combo amp myself, larger amps sometimes don't make sense.
@BadassMo0ze Thanks man, I already have that album and their self-titled debut. Both are superb, I was wondering if there was anything else similar. I'm not very up on my stoner rock.
Lemmy it's that you? You rock, greets from south america
Sweet bro... Pretty badass ...sounds like kyuss or qotsa.....what kind of distortion are u using?
@speedphreax Oh yeah. Great band too. Groovy sounds :D
those natural harmonics are just so awesome.. for some reason i always thought that those won't fit into stoner metal
Hey Corey. I love the sound you've got going with this particular video. Are there any bands you recommend that play a similar style to your opening riffs? Keep up these videos, they really help me out.
Kyuss gardenia
This is gold
Do you think you could make more songwriting material, maybe for other genres? I find your content the most useful of all the riff lessons on YT. I'd love to see heavy/thrash metal, something that goes hard but that still sounds musical. Maybe some Metallica or Dio sounding stuff. Much love brother.
thats dope man thanks :)
muito bom gostei.
@Cecilia32313 It's just in the lovely standard tuning.
You're freakin' awesome
start off with a regular 4/4 (or 6/8 - depending on your track) rhythm and develop from that...it's just trial and error. try to fill in the patterns at different positions and try combining them. after some time you will discover which pattern works with which lick/riff.
creating a good drumbeat is as hard as creating a good guitar riff...and it's a matter of taste as well. so there's no explicit formula.
just: if you like it, it's allowed to do. ;-)
i like it here cool lesson to
what equipment/effects are you using to get that sound? its really similar to kyuss' sound which is what im trying to achieve.
Thanks for the vide
@prolixian Do you know Sleep? Holy Mountain is a damn fine album.
Would you recommend keeping strings the same gauge to create a slurred sound when down tuning or beef up a bit to keep tension
even when i wrote this comment i was using a custom set of .10, .14, 20, .36, .48, .66
answer this comment I wanna know as well
The answer is "yes". Some players play with a relatively tight fretboard and therefore heavier gauge strings (my preference). Some players (like no less than Tony Iommi) like a loose fretboard because they like the spongier sound and the ease of bending. I would suggest trying whatever string set strikes your fancy.
If I hadn't, I would never have known that I like a pretty tight fretboard in the three bass strings; those heavy strings drive the pickup harder and I can play both more softly with clarity and more forcefully without rattle than I could with thinner strings.
You can calculate your string tension so you can keep the same tension at lower tunings here. stringtensionpro.com/Home
stoner lesson number one for guitarist, drummer, vocalist and bassplayer: GET STUFF @ SMOKE.
second lesson: liesten to black sabbath and electric wizard
third lesson: when you high, get a pause, smoke moar and liesten to bongzilla
yeah, my ass on fire, cause i'm wathcin this shit. learning how to play stoner from youtube is like learning war from counter-strike.
the riff sounds like it's coming together like Soundgarden's "Overfloater"
Thanks Corey...u rule ;)
I hope that you will, you seem to be great musician (and teacher)!
Just jamming here.
Great lesson it helped me alot, just few questions: what strings would you recommend for stoner? Also if i want to tune down my guitar to C i have to bring it to a luthier to set my guitar to avoid the neck to bend? Sorry for my english
Yes, it's a good idea to get a qualified luthier to adjust the neck when changing gauge. I'd recommend .11-54s for lower tunings. They come in a variety of custom gauges.
ok what would be a simple way to get that thick stoner sound similar o yours? i've got a raven RG60...should i just throw a good fuzz box infront of it? or is it all amp?
What pickups do you have on that SG? Are they just the ones that were already on the guitar when you bought it?
@DavidL1432 .10 - .46 gauge strings and the tuning that I am in are probably not the ideal combination.
@mastaslap Line 6 Toneport. Just posted a video about settings.
KYUSS!
this is heavy!
No, but it's the guitar I use during private lessons at home, so I just have to make do. Will be getting my DBZ set up for a lower tuning at some point, with HEAVY strings!
You are a fucking genius.
Wow, amazing lesson! Is there a course on stoner rock music?
There's five different lessons available at the download store. geminiguitar.com.au/digital-downloads/
You'll find two of them in the Dabbler's Den section and the other three at the bottom of the page.
10years ago but still dopes
cool shit man
@BadassMo0ze I agree.
