- A summary of Randy's series “Understanding Colony Buildup and Decline.” By acquiring a better understanding of the biology of bees, nutrition, parasites, and pathogens over the course of the season, and by learning to "read the combs," the beekeeper can then make better informed management decisions adapted to his/her particular situation.
Terrific talk! It helped me understand some things I've been seeing in my hives, as well as understanding the cycle better. Thanks so much for making this available on UA-cam!
Lol I was that guy my first year beekeeping. Thought I could work my bees just like the professionals. I was soooooo wrong. I've learned alot of do's and dont's . Overall it has been very rewarding. Thanx for the great video...
A very interesting talk. Beekeeping knowledge is something we should all be familiar with. Knowledge is universal, the more you learn the more you realise how little you know.
Thank You for posting, This is invaluable!
Two things in this world, I find difficult to understand. One is the construction of bebop music, the other is bee keeping, it's complex stuff. Great video. Thank you.
As long as Randy keeps to bees and stays out of politics which he has absolutely no clue about he is in the good. People can also learn a lot about beekeeping from the internet with the filter God gave them as a brain. Randy is very good with bees,,,,period. His ideas on opinions on life are not sacrosanct like his ideas thoughts and opinions of bees.
Excellent as usual
Not sure I understand why around the 42min mark he calls a swarm of bees a mite bomb, this most definitely would cause a brood break which has been proven to temporarily stall out mite growth. Something in his statement there is lacking proper context. The rest of his bee advice was quite good and insightful, Thanks!
Because the Swarm itself becomes an uncontrolled beehive, not being treated or tested for mites. So As the feral colony grows so does the mite population in it and so do the amount of mite infected bees flying in/around commercial/backyard hives drifting to colonies as they get lost etc. That feral hive then becomes the mite bomb, not the mother colony that is on the brood break and likely gets tended by a beekeeper.
It’s your understanding that is lacking. He’s saying the swarm is now going to be living in the wild on its own with nothing to treat it for mites. The foragers from that (now wild) colony is going to spread those mites.
It seems Naive to think that nature can’t solve the varroa mite problem but somehow man can. Treating Varroa with chemicals is not a good long-term solution.
Does he think that treatment free beekeeping is necessarily poor management?
I have no idea why this guy thought that it was appropriate to bring politics into a beekeeping presentation as he did. I don’t want my Beekeeping to be contaminated with reference to Trump or any other politician. It was completely inappropriate and distracting in this presentation.
So we all know now that you are a socialist, you spoilt your video because of that dig at Trump, remember that 80m plus people voted for Trump in your country, millions more around the world would also have voted for him if we could have, Australia for Trump, he'll be back in some form. I'll do my best to keep listening to your video regardless of your sad political affliction.
I guess I missed the dig at Trump, where is it?
Was going to subscribe until you took a run at Donald Trump.
Stick to your knitting.
We don't need or care about your comments on our President. Stick to bees!
Exactly. Don’t need to hear the comments from a California liberal about our president. I watched this for bee knowledge, not political commentary.
Previous president*
Randy Oliver has forgotten more about bees than most beekeepers will ever learn. I’m surprised that some people watched the video and their takeaway was “he dissed the former president”. Wow!
We simply stated that we did not watch him for his political views. If he didn’t want us to comment on his political comment then It should not have been brought up during a video on bees. Stick to what you know and what people come on here to watch you for.
You lost me when you got political at 1:28. Unfortunate, because I have watched and enjoyed many FIBKA videos featuring yourself. I wish you hadn’t done that.
Blah blah blah…
Sorry
Very knowledgeable man, horrible speaker. Cough cough, clear throat, grunt cough
U
Cumberland, Randy is fighting Cancer. So that said, I’m sure your opinion of this knowledgeable man should change.
@@CastleHives unfortunately he is, I wish him well. However was only made public a few days ago. I wrote my comment two months ago at which time nobody knew. I can only hope my comment made him realize he was unwell and lead him to go see the Dr. Bewildering you can back two month later trying to shame me, like hindsight wasn't twenty twenty.
Why is this guy trying to give us some ideas between the coughs and the grunts and us thinking about the virus spreading around the world he is the worst speaker ever
Sorry you think that. Have a look at his website scientificbeekeeping.com/ to understand why he's an important and influential beekeeper.
Would you say that Stephen Hawking was a bad speaker because he used a computer to simulate his voice? You might consider, many could also judge you on your lack of punctuation. There is not a single question mark, comma or period to separate your thoughts. How are we supposed to know what you are saying? It's because we have the patience to overlook that, in order to hear your contribution.
