It does not seem like you have the contol any sim mod. I would recommend it since it allows you to control that sim without the sim joining your household(under the actions menu). So if u host a function you can make the hired sims do their job. Edit: spelling
One thing that can help a lot during those sort of challenges is to go buy traits and potions in the reward store (in aspirations). Everyone keep forgetting about that feature, but it really does make things easier.

For future handiness you can also use books or the work bench you can make furniture on.
