As a teenager in the late 60’s I was on a flight from NYC to Rochester, NY. Count Basie and his band were the only other passengers. I grew up listening to his music and loved it. I introduced myself to him and told him what a big fan I was. He was so gracious and kind…..I can still see his big smile and I got lots of autographs that day! I was so thrilled!
The best concert I ever saw was the Count Basie Band playing in the hot sun on the sidewalk right on 6th during a jazz festival in NYC for 2 1/2 hrs. You could tell that they were they were getting off on the rhythms of the city in their home base. in 1975. Ill never forget it.
...and notice how his rhythm section (piano, bass, guitar, drums) are located close to each other on the bandstand. Makes for better communication and cohesiveness.....
I found this song while researching Count Basie for my religious rock n roll class project and after listening to the first 10 seconds I immediately fell in love with the song!
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Rufus in Lake Tahoe around 1967. My room was right next to his. I heard double bass drum pounding on my wall. Knocked on the door and who pops out but Rufus. I almost fell off my shoes. We went to Reno together on our nights off to hear this young drummer that Rufus thought played better than him.
This music has life: bounce, punch, dynamics, harmonies, melody. Perhaps the last we may hear of such: the musicians are gone. The musicians of today may be good, but they lack the soul this music requires. Miller, James, Ellington, Basie, etc... all gone. The world is a lesser place without them.
ya, I don't really, however, like to much of jazz when it was more of an art form rather than straight up dance music, but I do appreciate metal a lot because of the musicianship there as well.
Always a treat !!!! Watched a video about the way coloured musicians were treated on tour (usually in a bus or collection of cars) . The interviewer asked why they put up with the trials and tribulations. 'Ah!' one guy said. 'But at night we had the music!!!'
but' and i get yeh! when duke and the rest came to Europe, they where heroes .arriving in Russia the military band played, i forget! but he was met by a rep; of Shostakovich, who wanted an audience with duke. apparently shosakovich was in his sick bed. yet in america they had to use the servants entrance.
Heard the Basie band live when Basie was still alive only once, back in 1979. But I STILL feel the hair on the back of my neck jumping on that brass entrance in All of Me!

Que orqueston y que magnifica interpretacion de "all of me", pieza que ha sido interpretada en todos los estilos posibles un millon de veces, pero ninguna mejor que esta por El Count y su banda.
How about Norman Keenan laying down that groove on the bass?? (MAN--Basie ALWAYS had great musicians in his orchestra--amazing how he always had guys that could swing like hell and play their a$$es off with such style!!)

I agree. I remember seeing him in the 1970s, and he was very gracious to my mom. Even let her hug him from behind, as he sat on the piano bench.
Great story! Thanks for sharing. I've heard he was a very nice and sociable guy. I still listen to him.
These arrangements make me smile when I'm listening to them all alone.

"Four heavy beats to the bar, no messing."
How Count Basie described his music to a journalist.
Another way he described his style: “Pat your foot”

The minimalist piano style of Count Basie.
Charles Barry : My favorite big band in the whole wide world!
Paul Dunne : I have no idea what that mean, but, yeah. Ok.
Hahaha! It's an Irish expression, and we pronounce it "hoor". It just means that he swings like crazy. Sorry about that.
Paul Dunne : No apologies, brother. Any fan of the Basie band is a friend of mine. 👍
Blind Jack Cotton I play drums do of course I love a Basie and Ellington, and, needless to say, Buddy Rich. I fear the art of swing is losing ground.
This is part reason GOD wanted us all to be happy!
Love love love this !!!❤❤❤
These guys could really swing. The best of the best.

🌟💚💚🏹🍇✳️.... And have a BETTER NEW YEAR 2025 🌀🌀👉
My my my
That day, when Jazz was taken seriously.
2022 Here 😁
Swingin’!!!
it's tight like that
Who was drummer at this time?
Rufus Jones
Aya en el cincuenta lo bailaba lastima que ya no se baile
Llevo ochenta años de Milonga
Mario Héctor Martino
Esto prueba que la felicidad si puede durar unos 3 minutos.
🌾💙🌱😃
This is the creme de la creme
I never get tired of that big blast in All Of Me. But here is my other favorite take on this arrangement:
ua-cam.com/video/cD0AzAxKLIA/v-deo.html
So great! Any idea who did the arrangement? Was it Basie, Nestico or Quincy Jones?
I think Billy Byers
@3A5530NE Indeed. It's published and every big-band has a copy. Even the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra would play it.
I imagine this must be how God the Father plays piano in heaven. :)
Speedy Jones--truly a FABULOUS drummer--(but I still prefer Sonny Payne LOL!!)
こういうピアノは良いね‼️
