I have a Rem 700 308 light tactical, 20 inch barrel. Gun is about 12 years old, with federal 168 it shoots 1/4 MOA. I haven’t seen many like it. It was my stepdads gun and when he passed my mom gave me the gun. I’ve stabilized the stock and bedded the action and recoil lug. Really great shooting gun. Also dropped a 1 lb Timney trigger in it.
Exactly, mine too! The old SPS tacticals only like Federal 168 grain out till about 8:00 and then I switch to 175 grain count to 1100 yd sub MOA groups

Couple of shooting tips. Your rest is backwards and having the front of the base come off of the bench will hurt your groups. A little baby powder on the front bag will reduce friction there. On the outdoor shooting, your front and probably rear sling swivel lugs were making contact with your bags, which will hurt accuracy.
Glad to see that they have improved some things. Happy to see them back and hope they do well and keep improving stuff. Really excited to see they updated the twist rate on the 223 models. It is the slow 1-12 or the 1-9, but a 1-8. very few on the market with what i call the preferred config for 223 bolt guns. I don't want a micro action or AR mags. When i am shooting 223 from a bolt gun it is with 80gr or higher bullets. Also, you mentioned the trigger. Funny enough all new Remington 700s come with a Timney trigger from the factory.
The true advantage of the Rem 700 action is that everyone makes stuff for it. So, while taking the SPS out of budget friendliness, you can still upgrade for not a lot. Any trigger swap, like mentioned, will do. Everyone and his cousin makes a chassis or stock for the Rem 700. And yeah, it was the foundation of the Army and the Marines 7.62X51 mm NATO rifles, essentially the basis of "sniper" rifles. They didn't call them that. It was just the rifle issued to snipers, which is a job description, not a rifle description. What makes a rifle a sniper rifle is when it is being used by an actively serving soldier with a sniper MOS.
It’s very important that other people make replacement parts for any of the new REM Arms firearms because REM Arms does not have a parts dept. Its my understanding you can not purchase replacement parts for any of the new models from the factory.
I've had one of these for several years. I don't know if it's pre bankruptcy or not but looks just like the one in the video. My first hunting rifle was a 1990s Rem 700 ADL in 30-06, which was reliable and shot just a hair over an inch at 100 yds. I had always wanted a Model 7 so I bought one in 7mm-08, along with a Rem 597 .22lr during the Cerberus era. The Model 7 went back to the factory with head space issues and the 597 had to go back to the factory not once, not twice, but three times. I swore off Remington and now shoot either Savages or Howas/Weatherby Vanguards. While I would love for Remington to make a comeback, I think other manufacturers have filled their place in the market. Bergaras come in at the same price point, yet have a great reputation for accuracy and reliability. The CVA Cascade (different brand, same company) also has a good reputation for accuracy at an affordable price. Savage has expanded its offerings, and Howa has increased its sales through increased marketing and sales of barreled actions through Brownells. With all these great options, Remington will have a hard time wooing shooters like me who had a terrible experience with their products in the past. Cerberus killed the golden goose.
I have a Bergara B-14 wilderness terrain and after spending a small fortune on ammunition to find a “favourite” the best factory load I could find was Nosler HPBT match in 140 grain, it shot .43”. Besides that it was ELD-M and X in the .60-.75 range.

I worked at my LGS a few years ago the fit and finish of Remington 700s wasn't want it used to be. Here we are post bankruptcy and my former manger told me the Remington coming off the assembly line is far better than before. All the bolt rifles come with the 5R barrels and with Timney triggers. Quite an improvement. I may have an anomaly. I bought my 700 SPS Varmint .22-250 around 2018 and I don't see the fit and finish issues that I saw in some rifles. I guess it was a hit and miss. I installed a Timney trigger and Hogue overmolded full bed stock. This rifle doesn't like expensive ammo either. It groups well with S&B 55gr SP out to 300 yards. Beyond that the wind does its thing on the little bullet. About accuracy. I have a Browning X-Bolt FLD .30-06 that took a while to group well. The ammo that this rifle groups the best is the Hornady American Whitetail 150gr SP flat base. Its zeroed at 200 yards with a three shot .75 group which is more than what I expected with $20 a box ammo. Now that I know how well it shoots I won't be fussing around trying different ammo. I have a second Browning X-Bolt Stalker .30-06 and it doesn't like the American Whitetail. It groups a little better at 200 yards with Remington Core-Lokt 150gr SP. Imagine that! Here in Texas the furthest I'll shoot is roughly 200 yards or less when hunting. Both the Remington and Hornady ammo is lethal out to 400 yards beyond that the bullet doesn't have enough velocity to expand. I have a limit of 300 yards at my gun club. I'd have to drive half a day to a one that has a range of 500 yards or better. It is expensive to see what ammo works with a given rifle. Don't forget that exceptional glass is a big component. Gun, glass and ammo plus a patient shooter = accuracy.
I bought a $350 700 ADL from Walmart about 6-7 years ago. With the no name scope on it. I said id upgrade parts every so often until i basically had a nice custom rifle. Just bought the gun to have the platform. Anyways, years later all i ever did was put decent glass on it and its never ley me down. Still shooting the $350 bolt, trigger, and barrel. I do think ill get a new chassis for it some day.

I have this rifle made before the bankruptcy. I’m they gave me a rebate and the rifle was nearly free. It shot about .75 MOA until I threw the garbage stock away. I put it in an HS precision stock and I’m getting anywhere from .2s to .5s with it.
I bought one of these, 16 inch 308 post bankrupt. I would have replaced the factory Bergara trigger and stock anyways so I thought I’d save the money and get the Remington. Only worries I had at that point vs the bergara were barrel and extractor. Barrel ended up being great and it hasn’t had any extraction issues so in my mind I saved a couple hundo on the same gun
Remington really needs to step it up.. I just bought a new bergara hmr in 308 and this thing is lightyears ahead of this rifle for dam near the same money.
@@EpikArms they have this model, well it’s very similar and the SPSS stainless model at my local sportsman’s warehouse. I was on the fence about getting one because of the past issues with Remington but after seeing this video I’m willing to buy one and try it out.
My 1989 Rem 700 in 30-06 took a lot of work to get down around 1.5moa, my 2008 SPS 300WM is an easy 1moa with no work. Company had a long run of hit or miss accuracy and fit and finish. Think it really got bad around the time they purchased Marlin.
I bought a 308 varminter took it to 900 yards with the sierra 169 mks. Still disappointed in the chambering cant get close to the lands even with a acs mag. I will say though i have shot multiple .3 groups with different powders.
I know they made a heavy barrel version with flutes back in the day. Not sure if they still manufacture one. That would be the perfect hunting rig although the weight on the 700 is about on par with most of bergara’s hunting lines.
The 20" barrel is awesome. I found one for $500 "used" (never fired and still in the box) at a local shop with a $90 bushnell walmart scope attached to it. The shop owner said no one wanted it because the short barrel means it wouldn't be accurate. He had a $675 price tag and I said "well if the short barrel makes it so terrible I'll take it off your hands for $450." He agreed to sell it for $500 saying "Well it's probably going to be terrible past 100 yards." I said "You really know how to talk down the guns you're selling." This rifle shoots better than I ever will. That's for sure. He's the ultimate fudd FFL. He thinks glocks blow up because they're "plastic" lol. When I said "The barrel isn't plastic and no they don't blow up 'all the time' considering they're the best selling pistol by far" he went on a rant about how the slides just blow right off the plastic frame and how they're junk blah blah. I told him that any out of the box glock will shoot much more reliably than all of the ridiculously overpriced kimbers he sold and he got really pissed. Probably because he had a bunch of complaints from people about some kimbers being picky with ammo/mags. Acoording to him 1911s are the only good pistols ever made! This guy also told me that shooting a single #7 shot 12ga shell out of a rifled slug barrel would ruin the rifling instantly. Also that my NAA .22mag would blow up because it's too small and can't handle the pressures with "so little metal". A kid came in to buy a 10/22 right after he turned 18 and the guy told him it was "too complicated" and basically forced the kid to buy single shot .22 instead. I wish I had spoken up. The poor kid thought this guy knew what he was talking about. "See all these little parts here son? They're going to need to be cleaned and maintained but you won't have that issue with the bolt action. These 10/22s do nothing but jam jam jam." If they jam so much why the hell is he even selling them? I have no idea how that shop is still open.
That is true Fudd right there. Glocks are decent. But you should have explained to him that HK is the first manufacturer of polymer handguns and they are the most tested military sidearm in history. Most people Scoff at the price of a Mark 23, especially for being polymer. I too was pretty hesitant. But once I shot it, it all made sense.
in the 20 years of soothing remington 700's im competition and hunting I have never had a complaint about the bolt handle. but everyone has their own preference, though.
Old vid, I know. But, I just got a REM 700 SPS Tactical. I love it. I did, however, drop a Trigger Tech in it, and tossed it into a KRG Bravo with some other goodies from Area 419. All in she weighs over 15 lbs now and she’s more accurate than me. 😎
I got a newer remington 700 sps in 223. It shoots crap ammo at about 1 moa and hand loads at a little under .5 moa. Sure its not as smooth as my hunting tikka t3x but boy its the most accurate gun ive shot.
My buddy has the same gun and is looking at the mark 4 leupold. What height rings are you using and what size is your objective on your scope? We’re trying to get it as close as possible
Did you shoot groups with the mdt stock? After ditching the houge, my pre bankruptcy 700 aac-sd shoots federal gold match 130 bergers consistently under .5” at 100 yards. My hand loads will print under 1/4” at 100 yards. Also smoothed the rifling with jb bore compound and kroil. It was night and day!
I own a SPS tactical in .308 Win. I impulse bought it about a year ago. The bolt isn’t smooth and it won’t feed 168 grain. Had to send it back to the factory, the rounds were really digging into the feed ramp. I’m assuming they ground down the feed ramp, but it really didn’t get back to me fixed. Any tips? I checked the screws, it isn’t the screws, the problem may lay in the god awful internal magazine, but I’m no gunsmith. This gun LOVES Remington CoreLokt Tipped 150grain
Modern Rem 700 -- it's a Lego for big guys. Or "the project". I mean you can( and will) replace many parts with the aftermarket alternatives to make it shine. P.S. Finally they have replaced their junky trigger! P.P.S. But for this price -- no way, especially here in Canada.
Historically, Rem has always has a bit of a jump in the throat to the lands. While this is great for hunting using a wider range of ammo, you are not going to see any major improvements until the over all length is longer than SAAMI spec. Find your land depth, then seat back 0.020 and test loads to find the node.
I have a pre bk suped up 700 in 300 wsm. I have the same issue with my hand loads as you my gun. For 900 there are a lot of better options, like tikka. I love my tikka and thought about selling my 700 for a new tikka. After all my mods it's a accurate decent gun.
I want a rem700 so bad because my dad has a 700bdl in 7mag from 70s and it's so sweet n beautiful rifle but I just can't make myself pull the trigger because it makes no sense not to get a tikka I have a 300wsm n 6.5 creed in tikka n they both shoot so sweet n are cheaper than the 700
@@jmgates09 Tikkas are just so great. Maybe one could get an aftermarket stock to make an improvement but outside of that they are almost perfect. Never seen one not shoot great, best action, good trigger, what's not to love.
Just before they went belly up their 40-xc 8n .308 1 in 10ć printe .47 " in two consecutive 5 shot groups on factory targets ,what more do you want?? Of course it's not 6.5 Creedmoor .
I'm curious if this is common for you . I'm in California so lead free restrictions . Now I reload but also always try out factory ammo in my rifles just in case I can use some off the shelf stuff . And I've Never found a barnes factory load in any of my rifles that will shoot under 2 .
Is that Nosler ammo with the Custom Competition HPBT bullets? My Tikka T3X Tac A1 shoots handloads with that bullet well, but the Hornady ELD M 140's are better.
EP5 feel sharper and have more resistance, both have not movement between click and both are positive and audible, i woudnt base my choice on the turret feel between the two, my main takavay is the glas is a hair better on the Discovery (not by much) but the fit and finish (how smooth the parallax and the magnification is) is better on the Arken
I have just recently found your channel, and I do enjoy your content. However, I do have one complaint about your review of the Remington 700 though. I do understand that this is all a personal opinion of the product by you about the hinged floor plate, but there are people who prefer them. They also serve their place in the shooting community very well. This is why there are so many companies out there who produce conversion kits for many styles of rifles including the Remington 700. As a further note, for the people out there who do prefer the hinged floor plate, there are very few manufacturers left offering that version of rifle in their lineup. It also goes to note, it is cheaper to manufacture a rifle with a detachable magazine than with a hinged floor plate. With the ability to convert your rifle, you have a plethora of options to suit your tastes.
I’ve said all along that if anyone should have owned the Factory Precison rifle craze it was Remington. But bad leadership had them in a pickle. Look what all the other manufacturers have done by cloning the Remington 700 better than the OG product. I’ll be curious to see what the new Remington 700 Alpha is all about and if they can combine it with other quality products like good stocks and triggers to make it a wanted rifle again.
I can tell that those reloads that were so hard to chamber were from another gun with a slightly bigger chamber. I will never forget that lesson from the 80s.
The old SPS tacticals are great shooting guns. They are just extremely picky with the ammo! Federal 168 grain out to 800 yds sub MOA groups and 175 grain for out to 1100 yd sub MOA groups. You picked all the ammo except for the best ammunition for that rifle. Besides the last ammo that shot.33. Take the old 308 SPS tactical and put some federal 168 grain match and redo the review on that!
With the exchange rate in here is Australia these new Remingtons are going to struggle. While Remingtons were having their moment of poor quality, brands like Tikka jumped in and flooded our market with accurate rifles, accessories and variety, also Howa and weatherby added their bit. There are Remington fans here but will there be enough?
Does anyone know if the 308 version with model number R84207 is a Pre or Post bankruptcy model? They are around $600 right now but idk if those might be old stock they had sitting around...?
@EpikArms pre bankruptcy..is in a bell and carlson kevlar stock with alloy sub chassis..not a big fan of the ergos but manage to shoot well..i have had a look at the Mdt timber stock as an option but a bit over $1k so have not pulled the trigger:)

I had an AAC SD 308 tried everything under the sun couldnt get it to shoot, also the chamber was so rough the cases looked like they had been dragged through gravel when ejected. As a kid i always wanted a rem 700 and when i finally get one it turns out to be the most disappointing gun i ever purchased!
Good gun, good video. Question though: I see a lot of youtubers loading one round at a time rather than use the magazine or magazine well. Why? Wouldnt you want to test the feeding of the gun too? I dont get why people do that.
Sometimes recoil can damage tips of the bullets, when you put them in the chamber like he’s doing in the video, it’s more consistent. Consistency is everything.
I'm an ol M24 guy so the Remington 700 is my jam. I would love to see Remington make a comeback.

It is expensive to see what ammo works with a given rifle. Don't forget that exceptional glass is a big component. Gun, glass and ammo plus a patient shooter = accuracy.
I bought a AAC SD in 308 as my first bolt action and dropped it in a KRG Bravo. It can shoot.

Beautiful overview of current production.
Glad you liked it!
I have this rifle made before the bankruptcy. I’m they gave me a rebate and the rifle was nearly free. It shot about .75 MOA until I threw the garbage stock away. I put it in an HS precision stock and I’m getting anywhere from .2s to .5s with it.
My Savage Predator hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor loved Nosler projectiles, though I never actually tried Nosler factory ammunition in it.
Bergara barrels are far better imo
Remington really needs to step it up.. I just bought a new bergara hmr in 308 and this thing is lightyears ahead of this rifle for dam near the same money.
yep
My 700 SPS is chambered in .308. I’ve been shooting Federal gold match 168 grain. Pretty consistent.
The hornady whitetail interlock might be an affordable choice also
Nice to see the accuracy has returned anyways
Then again this is a sample of one...
@@EpikArms they have this model, well it’s very similar and the SPSS stainless model at my local sportsman’s warehouse. I was on the fence about getting one because of the past issues with Remington but after seeing this video I’m willing to buy one and try it out.
let me know how well it does, (in the comments) its always good to have more than just my opinion
Wow what a Fudd! Lol thanks for the story. Always feels good to get a deal on a gun
That is true Fudd right there. Glocks are decent. But you should have explained to him that HK is the first manufacturer of polymer handguns and they are the most tested military sidearm in history. Most people Scoff at the price of a Mark 23, especially for being polymer. I too was pretty hesitant. But once I shot it, it all made sense.
in the 20 years of soothing remington 700's im competition and hunting I have never had a complaint about the bolt handle. but everyone has their own preference, though.
it's crappy
Upgrading mine as we speak go look on my community wall when you get a chance. Adding another timney trigger with str8 trigger.
I have the Remington 700 .30-06 and I run the nozler accubond rounds at 180 grain and it loves it
Old vid, I know. But, I just got a REM 700 SPS Tactical. I love it. I did, however, drop a Trigger Tech in it, and tossed it into a KRG Bravo with some other goodies from Area 419. All in she weighs over 15 lbs now and she’s more accurate than me. 😎
My stock choice for my Remington 700 is . The magpul Remington 700 hunter stock
I’ve had amazing luck reloading nosler bullets. I’ve never had good luck with their factory ammo
Love my 70s Era 700 in 308.. still shoots sub moa!
So.....back when they made good guns.
I got a newer remington 700 sps in 223. It shoots crap ammo at about 1 moa and hand loads at a little under .5 moa. Sure its not as smooth as my hunting tikka t3x but boy its the most accurate gun ive shot.
lol
Would you recommend the Remington 700 Alpha 1 in 7mm REM MAG
havent tried one yet! not one is available in Canada at this time
My buddy has the same gun and is looking at the mark 4 leupold. What height rings are you using and what size is your objective on your scope? We’re trying to get it as close as possible
i was using MDT premier 34mm medium height and the objective was 56mm
Did you shoot groups with the mdt stock? After ditching the houge, my pre bankruptcy 700 aac-sd shoots federal gold match 130 bergers consistently under .5” at 100 yards. My hand loads will print under 1/4” at 100 yards. Also smoothed the rifling with jb bore compound and kroil. It was night and day!
Nope not yet, it's in the plans!
@@EpikArms Can’t wait to watch! I’m keeping the faith on ol big green!
Never said what ammo shot .31 at 100 for 3 shots. Im curious as to what it was
I own a SPS tactical in .308 Win.
Rem 700 joke:
I upgraded the trigger and stock, fitted a new barrel and action. Shoots great now.
LOL yeah i feel that one!
😂
would love to see actual grouping sizes 5 or more.
Did the groups improve when dropped it in the new stock?
Nice to see the 700 making a comeback, but honestly from what I saw here, I think it’s a bit overpriced. $700 maybe. But like I said, Go Remington !
Question does it come in a 300 Winchester short mag model 700 hundred 😮
How can you tell if you have the 700 that was made before they started making junk?
Historically, Rem has always has a bit of a jump in the throat to the lands. While this is great for hunting using a wider range of ammo, you are not going to see any major improvements until the over all length is longer than SAAMI spec. Find your land depth, then seat back 0.020 and test loads to find the node.
When Remington has positive review for 5 years I MAYBE CONSIDER BUYING A REMINGTON firearm. I got burned BAD with a rifle 5 years ago.
Did you get the barrel too hot?
I have a pre bk suped up 700 in 300 wsm. I have the same issue with my hand loads as you my gun. For 900 there are a lot of better options, like tikka. I love my tikka and thought about selling my 700 for a new tikka. After all my mods it's a accurate decent gun.
I want a rem700 so bad because my dad has a 700bdl in 7mag from 70s and it's so sweet n beautiful rifle but I just can't make myself pull the trigger because it makes no sense not to get a tikka I have a 300wsm n 6.5 creed in tikka n they both shoot so sweet n are cheaper than the 700
@@jmgates09
Tikkas are just so great.

The key to getting a good rifle and ammo is to move out of commiefornia
Is that Nosler ammo with the Custom Competition HPBT bullets? My Tikka T3X Tac A1 shoots handloads with that bullet well, but the Hornady ELD M 140's are better.
Yes those are the ones
jeweled bolt or standard black bolt is the question
Is the bolt release still in the trigger or is it like a bergara now? Thanks
It is still in the trigger.
How do the turrets on the Discovery ED PRS compare to the Arken EPL5?
I’ll be curious to see what the new Remington 700 Alpha is all about and if they can combine it with other quality products like good stocks and triggers to make it a wanted rifle again.
you can still get 40x?
At Academy you can pick up a Remington 700 ADL VRM .308 26" barrel for $639
I can tell that those reloads that were so hard to chamber were from another gun with a slightly bigger chamber. I will never forget that lesson from the 80s.
How does it group on the new stock ?
Did you add that rail? It doesn't come with one I thought...? Thanks for the video!
Nope it doesn't come with a rail
Looks like R700 is going to be my first rifle
Does anyone know if the 308 version with model number R84207 is a Pre or Post bankruptcy model? They are around $600 right now but idk if those might be old stock they had sitting around...?

They do, check their website

Would have liked to see how much that garbage stock impacted accuracy. Especially since you already own a precision chassis.
What caliber does the m24 usually run?
M24? No idea, but this one is a 6.5 creedmoor
The M24 SWS is chambered in 7.62 NATO. It's built on a long action so it can be retrofit to use 300 Winchester Magnum.
Ah, I see. Thanks.
