XF owner here, I owned a Montage for a while and loaded all my XF patches into the Montage with the idea of then selling my XF. The result was I found the Montage too bright and lacking some lower mids, so my patches sounded different, I would estimate 80% sounded better in the XF and 20% better in the Montage. I tested analogue and digital outputs on both and it was the same. Montage is not as warm as the XF, also lacks some width on the lower fequencies and these are just missing, you can't EQ the Montage to replace this at all. Of course the Montage is great with its new waveforms and FM engine etc, but comparing like for like the patches on the XF are just nicer and sweeter sounding. I was gutted to send the Montage back as I thought all my great XF patches I had programmed for 5 years were going to sound even better in the Montage. I investigated further by asking a sound set programmer who sold sets for both why this was the case, and he partly agreed, saying the XF was warmer because of different converters but overall the Montage was better in high end detail.
@Xeraser Wonderful Xeraser :) I also own a white edition XF7 . A few tips, make sure you use the element LFO's in combination with the global LFO for maximum effect, you can even create your own LFO shape or press randomise for some cool inspiration with the global LFO. Your firmware will be the latest so make use of the excellent HD reverb and other amazing effects which are rack mount quality. Spend some time exploring the arpeggiators as there is so much you can do with them as they can not only control the notes they can control filter and effects as well. Finally when you've mastered the UI of the XF then why not install a Flash memory module FL512M which will enable you to load even more wave forms, then buy this set ua-cam.com/video/rfJ8dKZdT00/v-deo.html . I can recommend this set as it not only gives you many more excellent presets it will give you a whole new set of wave forms which are different from Yamaha's stock set. I've owned my XF for 5 years now and I've mastered about 90% of what it can do, I've learn't a few important things in this time, firstly is how powerful the XF can get once you know more about what it can do with sound , and secondly try to forget what's available in 2021 as I honestly IMO believe the XF represent a period that has not been bettered since. I sold my Montage I’m getting the my XF back. The Montage was good better for synthy stuff but I got Korgs and Rolands for that.
I love the XF for that reason; it sounds warmer than the montage. Some of the details on the montage has approved; but sounds too bright for my taste. But I will have to say the Orchestral sounds are a BIG IMPROVEMENT overall. They really nailed it on this one.😌🎹🎶👍🏾

@@g-soul4771 Exactly!! Because of the warmth; it added more realism to the sounds. Especially the pianos and EP sounds. The montage lacks that warmth! Yamaha need to redo those converters to get that warmth back for the next generation of synths (I know they’re working on somethin.😕). We’ll see. In the meantime; the XF stays.😌🎹🎶👍🏾
the Montage might sound better in a studio setting but in live performance your audience would never know the difference
Even though it's a great instrument, I really hope Yamaha starts going into Virtual Analog and Virtual Acoustic engines to accompany the aging AWM2 engine for their next gen flagship. When the Montage released, I was a bit disappointed that they just took a Motif, multiplied the wave-ROM (again), gave it a touch screen, tacked on the FM-engine and finally named it Montage to differentiate it from the old Motif-name. It makes for a great instrument that I still consider myself, but from a technical perspective it's still a Motif at it's core.
I agree 100%....I think I'll just stay with the XF and just use that for the sequencer control to vsts...
No way! Sampling, when done right, ALWAYS sounds better than modeling....
@@gb3496 When the samples are used in their intended way they sound really good, yes. But as soon as you go outside the intended range of the samples and want to create something else, the cracks start showing. This also applies for monophonic sounds on the Montage/Motif, as it creates a lot of artifacts because the sample playback engine has to change samples in the middle of a glissando or portamento-slide, and this creates a lot of artifacts that you would never get in a virtual analog engine.
@@gb3496 I would agree that getting things super authentic with physical modeling is tough. It’s the small imperfections that make the real deal and why sampling might win. But, in the late 90’s Yamaha had two physical model synths and the coolest thing was their ability to morph from one voice into another, including to glide from a percussive instrument into a wind or string instrument and vice versa. The synths were out of the financial league for normal users and the flagship did not even make it into regular shops. But that was innovative and new and so freaking cool. And no Sampling would be able to do that. I have been waiting for them to reintroduce this, now that Computational power is so much cheaper. Alas …
Just wanted to say that the montage was never Intended to be a stage piano. A stage Piano like the ES90 has everything at the tip of your fingers.
To this day I still have to think to remember how to layer sounds and remember where my favorites sounds are in a plethora of amazing sounds.
The montage makes solves this issue by making it easy to layer sound and finding them. That's why I love it, the building material is not as good at the motif though. I find it a little plasticky
I'm very very glad the Montage is out. I think for most almost 99.999% of situations the difference in sounds will not be discernible. I'm just happy now the price of an xf8 will surely drop.

I have the Montage and the Motif XF and i can tell you by comparing same sound to same sound, playing the same song, it sound better on the Montage.
Moessieurs I wanted to compare new sounds, since the Montage has all of the Motif sounds in it. The Montage should easily win.

The real difficulty here is that the mp4 format for the youtube video file evens out the quality of the audio you hear from the two instruments. They sound exactly the same because of the format of the UA-cam video, not because the two instruments are equivalent. Side by side in the same room you can probably perceive a slight difference in sound quality. I don't think it's enough to get too excited about, though. Both instruments sound superb in person.
For me, the Motif has way more tonality and depth in its expression compared to the Montage
I bought the Motif ES, MO, MOXF, and XF and ended up selling all except the XF because of the all around benefits. I now use the XF with a Nord Electro 2 and Korg CX3 (Neo Ventilator 1 for leslie). I would love it if Yamaha could go to a sample engine with less sounds but higher quality (like the Nord). I would love to buy something like that. The Montage is just not that kind of upgrade for me. If it is not in the picture, or they move too late, i may just jump over to the Nord Stage/Piano option. I wont get rid of my XF though because i love the option to have my recordings/ loops available.
yamaha has some stage pianos like nord......they don't really sound any better than their workstations though
I own the white XF6 and it is a wonderful tool it is not about which is better they all have their place in any set up, i also have a 73 Kronos 2 which is wonderful but i can't say it's better than the XF it is just another tool with different possibilities.
Just an observation, by no means meant as a negative comment/opinion... I like everything played on the XF (made me fall in love with my xf again, especially after having recently touched a montage at guitar center and thereafter was ready to open a line of credit! lol!). It just seems like what you played on the montage didnt have the same passion as the XF. You sound awesome! Enjoyed. Anf thank you for doing the comparison!

Hey guys! As for me Motif XF sounds better and fatter. But it’s IMHO and not just because I own Motif XF. And I don’t plan to sell it. My main problem is that I can’t find Yamaha FW16E extension card for it. And I think this is the one of aspects which we want to compare. Motif XF (without FW16E card) can give us 24bit 44KHz digital sound and 24bit 96KHz (with FW16E card). While Montage gives us 24bit 192KHz. So I think in theory Montage can sound better. It’s all about default settings, EQ, FX and all stuff like that. Cheers!

I can't speak for the Montage, I don't have one, but I have had a Motif for quite some time, and you have tweaked the sounds, not just the EQ, but the effects also.....If you were demonstrating what you can DO to the sounds to make them better, this would be relevant, but when you are doing a straight comparison, the only thing that is fair is that you play the sound EXACTLY as in the library, un-touched or re-worked in any form or fashion. Otherwise, it then becomes more of a "tweaking contest". If I were to make a video demonstrating ANY sounds from ANY keyboards, and I wasn't playing the "AS-IS", I would impart that information at the outset. I know this is done all the time on many videos, not trying to single you out, but again, for comparison purposes, it is not a true comparison.
how it's possible to compare if you playing absolutely different sounds with a different harmonic? I'm with a comment from Moessieurs.
Who cares, we purchases the motif xf anniversary and we love what we can do with it. There may be better but it is not about the kit it is what can be produced. Hit records have been made with less! Each individual sound can be fine tuned, who needs more? We combine with Logic Pro to produce tracks.
Montage is the best keyboard of all time period.

I like the Motif much better. the oak custom drum kit on the Montage is really nice though. too bad there is no full sequencer on board for it. (DAWs are overrated)

There is a sequencer idiot it’s called performance recording in the Montage! And you and I both know that it a way better improvement then the Motif they should have done the Montage a loooooooong time ago
Montage sounds more better and not compressed like XF , i have tried them both , before when i mix multi channels from korg and Yamaha keyboards i feel that sounds from Yamaha is weak but now after montage near to be equal in quality .
With The tweak your own sound feature on the Montonge. I’d go with that one.? My Roland FA08 has that feature on it has also. And this feature is extremely underated man. So if I don’t like the way of the sounds sound on my Montage. I can go to my Settings, tech, etc. And I can deeply edit my sound, until it’s giving me the sound, pitch, deepness that I’m looking for you. And no I’m not talking about the EQ feature where you can just easily turn knobs. No, I’m talking about deeply the deeply editing feature. Montage wins along just for that.

Motif Xf8 is way better hands down as a professional composing work horse. I ended up returning montage as it really did not impress me at all. The sounds on the motif are much warmer for live and on recordings. Don’t know why Yamaha have taken a step backwards with Montage ?’!
Montage is just a synth with minimal recording capabilities. A lot people are disappointed about that, but I guess Yamaha wants you to use cubase.
Montage is way better than Motif… You missed out on lots you could have done with the Montage and actually Montage does much more than what Motif did and you can make sounds, something you couldn’t do on the Motif… Folks saying they rather stay on Motif do realise that Motif is way old and actually Motif has had it’s time now the Montage does twice a better job Motif did for a live/studio setting
Who keeps texting you? Lol great demo obviously the newer Montage wins in sound quality, but not by much, and at a much bigger price, I’d choose the Motif that constant blue circle would do my head in, why did Yamaha put leds in it???

You need to compare both new keyboards. I mean with all new electronics and new electrolytic capacitors in signal path. After 10 years of use you may find Montage less dynamic and less transparent

You're playing better stuff on the Motif. Why? Maybe you just know it better, and have your go-to sounds. To me the Motif is warmer, but a little 'organ-like' - another way of looking at is like, the Motif is a Les Paul and the Montage is a Strat. They ARE quite different. It will be interesting, if you use Montage v.2.00 firmware upgrade as an opportunity to compare the *exact same sounds* on the two. They say you can even translate Performances! thanks, maestro!
there’s an upgrade that makes the montage patches sound like the motif xf?? Bc for some reason most of my favorite patches on the XF sound horrible on the montage @ my church. It’s devastating
First off, the comparison is moot in a way, because the Montage has the entire XF soundset. So, if you have a favorite XF sound, then it's in there. That said, most of the Montage sounds are far superior to the XF. In particular, the acoustic pianos and EPs are much more expressive and natural to play. The piano on the XF feels rather flat, sampled and inexpressive to me, whereas the Montage is brilliant. The strings, brass and synth are also better on the Montage. In general, the Montage is a big step forward for Yamaha.
They sound the same, also they're the same patches... montage has his own default sounds plus the final version of the motifxf sounds.

The Yamaha Motif xs - xf -VS- Yamaha Montage Comparison.. of course it is all about the power of the sounds effects processor engine and sounds mix & effects options settings. The standard factory user banks sounds presets are just a starting point, to go dive in the so many sounds effects / mix options to edit / create mic or design a new or and personal sounds atmospheres, not only single / solo instruments sounds but of course also . to combine multple tracks and recording multiple instruments tracks. The Yamaha Motif xs- xf series allready offers many options and settings to can edit mix each singel instruments recording tracks and can mix mastering the multiple recording tracks together in case you use the motif xs - xf as standalone music production workstation without hook up on a -Pc-Daw-.. The Montage have a more stronger sound and effects processor engine and offer even way nore sound effects mix options.!! but on the other hand it Always will be a personal thing on a comparison wat would sounding better.!! there is no need of comparing because montage has all internal waveforms of motif plus much more newer...so it's only a matter of different presets, you can import all voices from motif xf, the awm is the same.
plus you have more samples, more effects, motion control sequencer and 128 fmx voices...so montage can do all motif xf sounds plus many more...
the only thing in which motif is superior is sequencing and direct sampling, but they are easier to be accomplished using a daw.
Taylor if you buy montage you have cubase ai license and you can upgrade for a few dollars to cubase elements, they are limited compared to cubase pro (only 48 audio tracks and 64 midi) but compared to every hardware workstation on the planet they are so far superior.
and montage is also an audiocard, motif requires firewire card or ethernet, montage has a usb port, connect an usb cable to pc/mac and run cubase and you can send 16 stereo channels and receiving 4...with no extra to pay.
so if you think about you have a multichannel audio/midi card with Pure Audio Circuit technology and great converters, a complete software daw, 128 fm voices plus dx compatibile patch converter, motion control engine, lots of new effects, seamless voices transition, envelope follower for converting external audio signal to control messages in realtime, a beat detector for synchronizing lfos or arpeggiator and motion sequencer to an external tempo via audio (e.g. a live drummer bassdrum), more controls, superknob, touchscreen, and total motif object retrocompatibility....as you can see they didn't steal you extra money for nothing, it is more expensive but far superior.

Montage sounds clearly more real...the subtle differences but they are

Montage over Motif XF… I proudly own a Montage 8 and also an MODX7 and used to own a MOX6 and MOXF8… Montage/MODX take things to a whole new level and people still using Motif don’t realise that they can make sounds using whatever is there and also sample… Even adding custom sounds and making the board sound way better and I can testify with the Montage… I’ve played Motif many times and as great as it was, it’s past it’s time and the Montage is the better synth…

Yes. The MODX has all the same sounds and features of the Montafe (including all of the Motif XF sounds). The Motif XF is last generation and inferior in almost every way. You should get the MODX.

The Motif xf also has deep tweak settings to edit and adjust the sounds. Do not see much difference in the two apart from the price. We were able to get a beautiful white Anniversary with x2 1 Gig Cards memory and additional Motif anniversary sound packs for just a tad over £1,100 in sale to accommodate the Montage release. Not forgetting that patches and other sounds can be imported into the Motif xf that was done with expansion packs. Sound being the most important but black keyboards are ugly, the red Nord was tempting until we came across the xf.

In a way, this comparison is kind of moot, because ALL of the Motif XF sounds and waveforms are included in the Montage. Like the XF piano better than the default Montage Piano? Fine--use it. It's already right there. It might even sound better than on the XF itself, because the AD sound circuitry on the Montage is better.
By the way, I have a Montage8 and a MOXF8 and I can definitely say that yes, the Montage sounds MUCH better. The EPs, Guitars, Strings and Brass on the Montage are just exceptional. The ability to shift in midplay from an ensemble to a solo or quartet with the Superknob/footpedal adds immeasurably to the dynamics and realism of the sound.
So why do I still have the MOXF8? Because it's half the weight (15 kg instead of 30), half the size and still has a pretty decent action and sound. If I'm going to a gig, the Montage is usually too much trouble to bother bringing.

In theory, yes. The Montage is Balanced hammer and the MOXF is graded hammer, so slightly less realistic. I also think that the Montage is triple sensor vs. double-sensor on the MOXF. In practice, the two keyboards feel very similar to each other. However, I think that the Montage is much more responsive. In particular, acoustic pianos on the MOXF respond somewhat unrealistically, whereas, they feel very natural on the Montage.
So if you don't mind the size, weight and price, the Montage is better in ever way. However, as a light, portable "gigging" board, the MOXF is more than good enough and a lot more practical to haul around.
