- What is the difference between the House and the Senate?
In this video we'll look at some of the essential similarities and differences between the House of Representatives and the Senate in the U.S. Government. We'll start with an overview of the Legislative branch of government and what their primary responsibilities are. Then we look at some similarities between the House and the Senate, such as how they are elected, what they do, and where they meet. Then we look into three parts about the differences between the two. The first part focuses on how often they are elected, what their requirements are to be a representative or a senator, and who they represent. In part 2 of the differences, we look at how they function differently. And in part 3, we look at how the leadership differ between the House and the Senate, including the positions of Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader and Senate Minority Leader.

Can you make a video about the fascist symbols (fasces) used in the House of Representatives and elsewhere in America?
I’ve lived in America my whole life and this topic still confuses me. This helps me understand it more, however I’ll still need to watch it a few more times to fully be able to remember it all!
Me toooo! On my second watch
Honey, just put it this way: you cannot take full control. There has to be someone always keeping you accountable. And that is good because we are all animals in need for more, more, more, more...
That's what we call checks and balances
It moves to quickly for me could have been done better.
If this confusing you you probably don't live in the us because you have to take the constitution test 2 times which explains everything

I'm Korean, which means this topic has nothing to do with my situation and knowledge. However, I wanted to learn the basic concept of how American politics works. Your video was really well made for beginners like me. Thanks a lot!

One of the greatest clips on this TOPIC of discussion.💪 Appreciated both the succinctness and the simple verbiage used, broadening the scope of the varied educational-gaps between individuals.
Thank you for the compliment! I appreciate it!

Thanks so much! I hope it does someday.
Perfect timing to educate me on senate and house. So many important issues being addressed now.
As a Ghanaian man I still want to know how American politics works. I also care about our politics here in Ghana. This video made a lot of subjects clearer
Thank you! My son came to me needing help with his homework, and I couldn't remember the differences at all. Your video was straight to the point.

It was a helpful video in understanding the essence.❤
I appreciate that it appears you are actually doing the drawing and arent merely paying for video scribe to auto generate the sense of authentic illustrated video. You can tell you are actually doing the work. So here is your Like good sir.
Thank you! All of my videos are 100% authentic drawings by me. It takes hours to create my videos, but I love doing it!
Thank you for the information
You bet!
THANK YOU!
Thanks for the explanation. It moved way too quick to really grasp the fine details.
The one detail I find boldly optimistic is both sides of the Senate "work together".
No doubt that was the founders' intent, but how often does that happen these days? Asking for a friend...
These are great videos! I plan to use them to help with homeschooling about Government!
That would be awesome! I'm glad you're going to use them for homeschooling.
Great video....

I think the main answer most people need is what Senate and House unique purposes, so they have to be separated. I mean, if they both are legislators, why do people need both to do exactly the same thing? And, districts exist inside states, so why don't the people choose just one (only districts vote, or only states vote)? It's too complicated if they have to vote multiple times for a single bill.
Well, mainly it's checks & the balance of power.
Ok, so put it this way in the bicameral systems around the world, such as in the UK, you have a senior house which debates provisional law, after passing through the lower house. This could mean the difference between a law being rushed, and it being debated and properly thought out.
In the US, the senior house, or senate, is similar to the upper house in the UK. Think of them as a little older, a little wiser, and a little more seasoned - remember, experience counts for a lot.
As he said in the video, there is no time limit for debates in the upper, and they can send it back to the rep floor if they need to , or even scrap it for redraft.
So, be glad you also have a bicameral system in the US - IT'S ESSENTIALLY A VERY GOOD THING!
@@RB747domme I mean, basically every body has their own "bicameral" (e.g House Rep & House Dem) already. So the check and balance debate could be done from the beginning, and every bill that came out is already came through the check and balance processes.
Reprocessing and debating it again in another different body would unnecessarily delay the bill even further. In many cases, it also gives a body to basically take hostage of the bill and/or the executives so they may appear as "incompetent" or "doing nothing" in their term.
@@CaraVerde that's intentional it's supposed to be a slow process and also the populace is supposed to stay informed that what's stop ppl from looking incompetent but everybody caught up in the roman circus and we have made a culture out of not discussing politics at the kitchen table so government grows bigger and bigger and we talk less and less about it
Laws can have a huge impact on society. The House ensures that bills have popular support, the Senate ensures that each state has a say regardless of population because laws can impact some states more than others. The US is a federal union, so the states share their sovereignty with the federal government while retaining some for themselves. In large democracies this is necessary to avoid a tyranny of the majority.
@@t0xyg3n I understood the idea. But to call it "to avoid tyranny of the majority" is very funny. Because suppressing the voice of majority is the first act ANY tyrants would do!
omg super helpful, u just organize 40 pages of my textbook chapter in minutes

Can you tell me the whole sentence about what are the differences and similarities between a senator and a representative.? Thank you😊
It’s kinda the whole video. Can you tell me what you mean exactly?
@@IllustratetoEducate the exact meaning of that what I mean is can you write down if its OK for you☺️
I’m just trying to figure out how they can stay in their position so long since we voted every two years and every six years.
Yup, there’s no term limits so they can run as many times as they want.

Question: In the Senate, are there always 50 republicans and 50 democrats or it depends on something else? Sorry I didn’t understand that little part
There’s always 100 senators total. Currently it’s split 50/50, with Kamala Harris being the tie breaker for the majority being in favor of the Democrats.
Yep, but it is always 50/50? Or it can be idk 60 dems and 40 republicans?
@@diegotasaycoyanez4195 It can be any combination of 100 depending on how the individual states vote when they vote for their senators. So yes it could be 60 40, 45 55, etc...
Afaik, the composition depends on the election, but the total is always 100 (plus 1 Vice President).
What is with the subtitles?
Been watching the House of Representatives this week, and it’s pretty interesting to say the least. I’m gonna start watching the Senate next week. 🗳
3:12 yeah right lol
Well, since the Constitution was changed so that Senators are elected by the public and no longer are the appointed representatives of their State legislatures, there is no difference between the House of Representatives and the Senate except for what powers each has. With that Constitutional change, the entire reason for having them separate was destroyed.
All Congress men or women shoud only be allowed to Served a maximum of
8 - years. After 8- years they to fine a Non Government Job.
This goes for all U.S. Senators as well.
To let this to continue to happen is a crime in it self.
The law needs to be changed ASAP.
To the members of the American Congress... We in Iraq have begun to doubt that the aircraft carriers Eisenhower and Ford in the Mediterranean and the Arabian Sea are Iranian and not American... Do you know the reason? This is because America, France, Britain, China and Russia can not close the Strait of Hormuz, the Strait of Bab al-Mandab, the Strait of Gibraltar and control the Mediterranean Sea... Only the Iranian Empire can do that, as it alone is the stronger than the countries of the UN Security Council combined.
How many how many members represent the Congress ⚖️👁️👁️👁️👁️ honest through Integrity dignity respect for the nation you represent manner's education 🙏🔥 Truth
Good video. But the one part where you said Congress is elected to support their constituents(or something to that effect). Congress does what their donors want, not the voters. The US is the only Western country that bribery is legal.
In reality you are correct. I wish that wasn’t true. So much corruption in politics when it is tied to money.
You are excellent in explaining, but I am still lost in understanding. I follow my party as well as elections and names. I watch the hearings as well. 😂 How divided the two parties are. So sad to see such angry people.
Nice video Who knew that just Using a white board and some color markers Would be so captivating and you draw so quickly😁
In other words we're totally FUCKED!

Why can't there be a basic requirement of a minimum Bachelor's degree. MTG and Boebert don't even have degrees...I would say you have to have a JD to run for office at the federal level but that might be a bit much

All that voting, election and decision making just to decide to patch a hole on the road... Good job America.

Would you mind telling me which class you watched this for and what school you attend? I’m just trying to get an idea of what schools and districts might be using my content in the classroom. Thanks!
@@IllustratetoEducate yeah sure! It was the Wisdom Lane Middle School in Long Island. I watched it in social studies because we are covering American history and this really helps to understand it.
Thank you! Good to know and glad you found it helpful. :)
This was pretty dumbed down and straight forward, and yet I still don't quite get it. That doesn't say much for me..😑
It may take a couple times to watch. And feel free to slow down the video. I know it's a bit too fast...
U did not tell , why we have to have two bodies? Since all are elected by the same people?
$50,000 education for free? Is that what i just saw????
This doesn't make any sense. What is the substantive difference?
For the next video, you should cover what happened in the capital and the violence. It saddens me how divided this country is 😞
I know that was terrible. I think I already missed that boat to do a video on it. But maybe a video about some of the overarching topics like 25th amendment, security at the capitol, etc. What do you think?
It was terrible, but there are many misconceptions about it. Those on the left ignore the fact that a vast majority of those on the right did not condone what occurred. It was simply a riot of several hundreds angry protestors, which sadly got out of hand. As unfortunate as it was (and I don't justify their behavior in any way... nor do any conservatives I know), it's been politicized and blown way out of proportion. As for Trump questioning the legitimacy of the election, I also don't agree with that... however it's hardly unprecedented. I remember the HUGELY contested Bush vs Gore election, for just one example, in which many on the left refused to accept the legitimacy of Florida's votes (remember the "hanging chads"?). I saw "Bush stole the election" bumper stickers for a decade afterward!
So it's laughable that the left is making such a huge deal out of people questioning the legitimacy of the election results. It happens all the time.
I still don’t understand
This made it more confusing ¡
Sorry you didn’t find it to be helpful 😓
Who has more power? Seems like the Senate
