STATE OF MIND with MAURICE BENARD: JORDI VILASUSO

  • Today's episode I'm joined by Jordi Vilasuso. Jordi is Cuban-American, raised in Miami, Florida, and even with a family full of doctors he knew he wanted to be an actor at a young age. He is best known for this roles as Tony Santos on Guiding Light (for which he won a Daytime Emmy Award for his portrayal), Griffin Castillo on All My Children, Dario Hernandez on Days of Our Lives and, most recently, Rey Rosales on The Young and the Restless.
We talk about his childhood and when he moved to NYC and joined Guiding Light, but things get deep when Jordi opens up about his relationship with his wife Kaitlin. When things got tough, they sought out therapy and continue to put the work into their marriage.
Jordi and Kaitlin have a new podcast called “Making It Work” where they candid about lessons they’ve learned in their own relationship and discover new ways of making it work in life, love & marriage.

I laughed. 🤣. Maurice you always make me feel that I’m ok. Thank you for that. I smile more because of State Of Mind. ❤️. My daddy had his arm broken when he was four years old. He didn’t have help. No drs. Nothing. My grandparents let him not heal. His arm didn’t grow past his age at four. My dad grew up and raised seven children on a Kentucky farm. I know he was in pain but he laughed all day everyday. He died at 66 by a drug addicted idiot who slammed into my parents car. He took my dad’s life and my moms life with a stroke and taking her only love away.

My daughter who has bipolar diagnosed 2 yrs ago also struggled with drugs. She was so lost. Hospitalized three times the last one 3 weeks ago because of suicide. She’s taking her meds but still struggles to take them. I have to remind her to take her meds every day. Although I feel like she should be the one managing her illness I feel if I don’t help her she would be in big trouble. She’s 26 yrs old. Thank you for advocating for mental illness. I just joined NAMI and I’m willing to advocate for mental illness. I’m also an ICU nurse and I’m doing lots of research on the disease. Again thank you for this channel.

Thank you for this interview, Maurice and Jordi. Jordi, you are so right. We need to have mental health checkups in our schools and as part of yearly wellness checks. What a great suggestion. Now all we need to do is convince the insurance companies to pay and schools to be on board. How would it be for children to feel safe talking about anxiety, fear or even bullying. We need to take away the stigma and shame and State of Mind and Maurice are such a big part of this discussion. Thank you, Jordi for being so open and honest about who you are. God Bless you both.

Jordi reminds me of Ted King when he was on GH. Good job Maurice -- another excellent interview. Keep doing what you are doing. It is important to talk about mental health. It would surprise many to know how much and how many folks struggle with mental health issues. I just hope the more people speak openly about their personal issues with depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, biipolar others will know they are not alone. More importantly, there is help to be had through therapy and when warranted medication. Thank you, Maurice for helping to lift stigma from mental health struggles.

Therapy, being open minded about therapy, is the real key that can unlock so many closed doors. I don't care who you are on the planet. EVERYONE can reap huge benefits from it. And you're right Maurice, access to it is NOT there enough. No one should have to wait. I myself, have been one of those who had to wait because quite frankly, I simply couldn't afford it. But mental health care has never been focused on in the way that it should. Jordi is right, etiquette as well as empathy have been so lost in our society. We need to find our way back to that.
I love that Jordi spoke on the benefits of yoga and meditation. Now that you are on the right meds Maurice, you should get into it! Once you do, they can be awesome additions to your mental health care regimen. Great interview! 💌🕉

Jordi was so awesome and truthful! I think its a wonderful idea to include mental health classes in school! The other thing is, the copay on visits to a mental health therapist were $30 per visit, and they wanted to see me 3 times a week. Then they wanted me to go to see a psychiatrist also. I had to put my mental health aside, because we have two boys with autism, and my husband also is bipolar, and not diagnosed with no medication

I truly enjoyed this interview today. I really needed it as it served as an escape for a short time of the extreme depression I’ve been in. Right now I feel like I am in 4.75 gear! The past 6 months have been horrific health & financial wise. The medical system has failed me a few times & I’ve experienced so many medical issues that triggered my anxiety/depression of my PTSD. My pets are my passion and sadly 2 days ago I discovered my Sun Conure Rainbow deceased I just crashed emotionally, couldn’t eat & can’t do anything. The psychologist I had for 2 1/2 years told me in 12/19 due to the severity of medical problems there was a way out. Believe it or not he told me I could end it all! He got dumped immediately. 2nd guy saw start of pandemic & he was Ok for 2 months till I needed him told to watch TV! What I had been doing! I’ve got medical tests & doc appts every week in July. Have had migraine 4 nites in a row. Watching this interview had my focus on it 100% & loved finding out Sonny is 1/2 Greek like me. Your show is helping so many of us through difficult times. Thanks & Bless you!

I’ve done so much good in my life been a cop, child advocate in court, had my own PA TV show & now I am physically sick on top of my PTSD. I can’t deal with misdiagnosis by med docs & finding a new psychologist is more like Mission Impossible. Thanks again for giving me some moments of peace of mind. Appreciate the kindness you share with all your viewers.

The last 10 minutes in particular should be seen by everyone, literally. The two of you touched on the central issue in the United States today and that is the huge lack of mental health care options at present, and especially for the uninsured, when we ALL need it so much if this society will learn to love instead of hate. Integrity and human decency can only go so far without support in these trying times. There's a literal mental health crisis in the United States at present. I love what you're doing! The idea of mental health checkups, (especially for say politicians :) ) annually should be available to everyone. Also the point on educating on mental health in schools. Great job today. Thank you so much. The stigma need to be replaced by education!
