Odd multi-day video here.. We worked partial days on this project until the roof started back up (day 3). There was a few hold ups that stopped us from moving forward, so we had to wait until we got the green light. Have you snagged a t-shirt yet? www.mattbangswoodmerch.com/ Second Channel: ua-cam.com/users/mattpanella Happy Sunday.. BANG X ON.
i learned a lot about framing from you and the old school framer Larry. your videos are very helpful as a build my shed from bottom up from scratch. One of my favourite trips from you is the 3 foot 6” and the 4 foot 6” Thanks again
Roof finally going up, Nice to see hand built rafters too and love the exposed beam going down the center and out the front and back. Nice work Matt and Team
Thanks for the videos Matt. I want to encourage you to make as many videos as possible. You have one of the best shows on UA-cam. Even though you grew up in the family business, I am impressed by your ability and knowledge for someone your age. Bang On.
I've got that exact same Emglo air compressor..We would run three framers off of it all day back when we built a lot of houses. Doesn't get used much anymore ,but still works perfect.
I love framing, it is big progress work. Ah change orders. You have got to keep track of those changes and charge for them, they will drive you you the poor house otherwise. Greg did a very impressive job on those rafter cuts. So many times those cuts barely look like they are suppose to go together. It is a form of art and you all seem to get it. Also like the shirtless one, too few of us nail benders do that anymore. Beautiful setting for a home.
Love the channel bro. I might be a professional but I enjoy watching craftsmanship that goes into your. I try things learned from vids like this to build dog and playhouses. Maybe one day the real thing. Thanks a million.
Dang I'm like 3 hours late to the party, you guys got lots of things going on out there, love seeing the roof starting to come together. Keep up the great work and always Bang on Brother 🤘
People have tried to get me to do so much free work, and I would just do it. But your right my time is valuable and im in this for the money. Shit aint free. Listening to you im going to start charging for all my change orders now. Great advice man and on your other video on how to bid correctly, huge thumbs up. appreciate your vids and you spitting you knowledge to us.
I never could walk top plate in boots, and never will. Almost 44 years old. Framing and plumbing since I was 15 years old. Love your videos keep up the good work..
Matt , do you do pole and timber framing? What about Barndominiums? Metal building, shipping containers or tiny houses? Are you a de verse builder. Where did you get your training?
Haven't seen the apprentice that worked on the winery. I have to commend you on your owning up to the mistake on the kitchen wall height. We all make mistakes.
A change always takes way longer than if you had done it that way to begin with. Usually takes longer than you think it will too. Need to be compensated for sure.
Those beams must have cost a small fortune. Those aren’t glue lams. That’s basically half of a good sized tree! Now, they aren’t old growth that are practically unobtainable. The Japanese love those and are willing to pay silly amounts. I guess if you are paying California prices for a house you might as well go all out.
@@MattBangsWood Gotcha. That's going to be awesome indeed. Thanks for the awesome content too. I'm renovating a 3 family home and learned a lot of helpful tips watching your videos!
With a big 1/2” round over or larger or 1/4” straight cut bit, in hard wood, you absolutely want to route in the right direction. BUT, with plywood a 1/4” straight cut with a bearing that rides the sill, and studs, the plywood gets torn up and the router doesn’t even know your cutting anything.
Do you bill the changes after the quote or do you estimate these changes in the quote? I'm a contractor myself and I've been caught with this same thing. And everytime I lose time and money. Because I can't change a quote nor invoice a different amount that the quote states.
I have a video coming out on change orders and how they work.. You want to have a signed change order before starting ANY of the change order work. If you do the work without one, there is so many loopholes for the builder or owner to get out of paying. In your proposals, quotes, contracts, etc.. You need a clause about unforeseen damages, if you're working on a remodel.. Or something along the lines of "Panella Construction is contracted to build per plan, any changes requested during the building process will be billed as a Change Order and charged Time and Material rates." You need something in there.. If you don't have wording regarding change orders or unforeseen damages, you're going to get snaked every time. Video I have on change orders is out this Thursday.
In government work we wrote the RFI. It came back with a COP. We would give a price, then out would come the CO. These all had sequential numbers and an index. Everything rotates around those numbers. No signed CO from the general contractor then no work.
I should actually add that the guy I mentioned had his thumb put back together with wires and all sorts of surgeries but he regained movement and is back at work today. It was literally like a credit card man. Still makes me cringe...
He had a little 1' chunk of 2x4" up there with him to gauge it. Definitely smart! Greg just had it going and marked it on each rafter. Dude stays ahead of us pretty good!
The rule of thumb is that you can't cantilever more than twice the depth of the framing member. And the back span has to be at least twice the cantilever distance.
IMHO, If you can do a change within the deadline and not use additional material they should be included in the price, especially if a home is $500,000+
Could definitely do that, I'm sure some people would appreciate that. So far on this project we have around 20~ hours of changes made. That adds up, fast.

You should make a video on how to make a shed
Yeah I ordered a navy blue eat ,sleep,frame,repeat t-shirt.
What’s with the 1/1/2 at the ridge. I’m not following u? How come u can’t go flush to the ridge?

Am I missing something? It looks like there's only like an inch for the other beam to sit on the support/post.

Excellent Matt
Always good and well demonstrated
how long was the beam! would like to see a in depth vid on this
The biggest we set on this place is 27'! I'll get something going. :)
Another great video Matt, keep it up
Beats me why you have only 112k subs. Should be a million more.

Hey Matt do you ever use palm nailers for tight spots? If so do you have a favorite?
Always enjoy the videos my brother. Bang on (lamb of god style of course).
Please, make a video explaining rafters in detail
Thankyou
Will do! Have something in the works, it's a bit of a process, but once you've got it down.. You're set! :)
Not very hard on them hand cut ratters
Nice work as usual guys ! Tee shirt ordered and on its way to New Zealand ! Will wear it while I frame my new garage using LVLs 👍🤙😂
Please, send photos! :)
that gradal is a must
Hey Matt, nice top plate shadow dance! Take a frame and turn it into a t-shirt design.
A change always takes way longer than if you had done it that way to begin with. Usually takes longer than you think it will too. Need to be compensated for sure.
Snapped leg to good days ...hit the subscribe button 🤪 🤣🤣
i kind of like that raised area, could be a nice little mud room, closet, butlers pantry etc
12:01 "The other beam is going to land halfway in here" yet it appears the beam you just placed takes up 3/4's of the metal saddle.
Amazing, wonderful!
Thank you! Cheers!
5:42 and this is why you have to come to work sober lol.
Matt, would love to see a rafter layout video. Thanks man, love the vids.
we get lots of that fluffy white stuff for about 5 months, oh and I live in Canada.
You are right. You should charge for change orders.
Love those dance moves
Good eye. Figured someone would catch it.
that custom truck is awesome, love the skulls. And do you have any stories/history behind the tats?
T-Shirt: “Banged out from front to back!”
yes do a video on cutting rafters
Sweet work buddy

That’s some beautiful wood too, I hope they plan on leaving it exposed.
makita and stabila. fuckin awesome. kick ass
20:00 Are you kidding us with that rod? That ride looks too clean to drive anywhere except a car show.
He drives the thing all over, little thing is fun to keep on the road! No car shows though, only local cruises. :)
Just wait 'til I'm daily driving mine to work.. LOL.
Is there a particular reason you didn't use LVL for the beams?
Exposed, had to look pretty on the bottom. Along with that, they’re exposed on outside for overhangs.
@@MattBangsWood Ohhh. Even inside the house is exposed? It's a cathedral ceiling?
Vaulted ceilings, 5” of beam exposed. Going to be super nice!!!
@@MattBangsWood Gotcha. That's going to be awesome indeed. Thanks for the awesome content too. I'm renovating a 3 family home and learned a lot of helpful tips watching your videos!
How’s the sizing on those boots? Do they run big like timberlands?
I wear a size 10 across the board, they fit the same as my Vans do.
MattBangsWood awesome thanks, gonna go scoop a pair now.
@6:45 i thought i was the only one who spray painted smiley faces on random parts of my builds!!! :)
In what direction is the router bit spinning? From what i have been told over the years, it looks like you and I route in a different direction...
What if it rained during construction, what would've been the best solution?
What do you mean? Like, during this project? We’d take off. Come back next day.
Do you have any licenses or certificates for framing?
Certified badass!
No, I got nothing.
At 10:55 beam has landed and being nailed off in hanger off centered . Why is this? Next beam wiil only bear 1" in hangar.
We weren't looking to bear half in the ECCQ. It's bearing a good bit, I'll show it when the roof goes up.
Love ur video's
5:48 that odd angle on the deck is driving my ocd crazy,
hmm in central california with all the fires going on here? be safe
Just wait.. You'll see the smoke in the upcoming videos.. It's bad.
@@MattBangsWood oh yea i live in the area and it is bad. today wasnt as bad as it has been but man it was just nasty
When you route the windows how do you cut so straight , knowing any little hand movement would destroy that window lol
He uses a flush trim bit and the bearing rides on the window frame.
Robert Barth thank you sir!
nice dance moves @3:55
I like the cool pickup is that your dads. What happen to your little apprentice, haven’t seen him in awhile.
Quintyn went his separate ways. Not sure what he's doing these days, although I did just talk with him the other day.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a little bit more info on roof. More detail if you can do so thanks looks good
We get more into it a bit later on, for now, it's just rafter slingin'. :)
A box on the corner of a street in California is worth multi millions.
@9:53 " we wanted the bottom 5 inches to be as clean as possible", "we want these to stay erect as long as possible"
I once seen a guy roll an I beam on his thumb 👍 and turned that thing into a credit card 😖

Not far off. I’m 5’10”.
Show how to walk walls
ChampagnePapppii learn to walk train tracks.. then walking without looking down.. how I was told to learn.. do it with boots
Next time you could tac a plate on the ridge as a guide and that would give you you inch and a half instead of marking each rafter
