Play Bookshelf Roulette with us! Hashtag #BookshelfRoulette.
How to play: You need to pick three numbers.
    · The FIRST number represents the four corners of a bookcase, so pick a number between 1-4. (1 represents the top left corner of your bookcase, then you go clockwise around the four corners. 2 is the top right, 3 bottom right, 4 bottom left)
    · The SECOND number represents the number of shelves on your bookcase. So pick a number between 1 and the number of shelves on your bookcase. Once you have your number you count up or down the number of shelves depending on which corner you are starting from.
    · The THIRD number is the number of books on the shelf and will depend on the size of your bookcase. You can pick 1-20 to start and figure out if you need to adjust based on the average number of books on your shelf. Once you have your number you count in from the left side to pick your book.
In our first game of Bookshelf Roulette we picked 4-3-2.
Top left corner of the bookshelf. Count up three shelves from the bottom, in from the left to the second book on the shelf.

Oh my gosh, this is so fun! I am behind in watching videos so I just got to this. I'm definitely going to do this when I get back from vacation

I used to love this feature on Literary Disco! OK, so I went to my "Keepers" bookcase, and 4-3-2 is ... (not counting the books stacked on top of the books on that shelf!) The Twelve by Justin Cronin (book 2 in The Passage series). An excellent book (and series) that my husband and I both enjoyed! We were disappointed when the TV adaptation of The Passage was cancelled - that first season was great. Emily's book really does have a beautiful cover. I haven't read any Thomas Merton, but it sounds interesting. Thanks for bringing this fun feature back!

What fun! I didn't listen to the Literary Disco Podcast so this is new to me. Fun seeing you got the Merton book Chris! I also enjoyed hearing the stories around your first reading of it. I went into my office and ended up with The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery which was a book I read back in 2009 for my book group. I held on to it because I loved this novel so much, and remember reading it on Amtrak on my short commute to work at the time. I had just started library school and was also working full time. I remember how comforting it was to read on the train. It felt like I was stealing precious reading time for myself outside of work and school.

So fun! Okay, I chose a bookshelf that's in my office and is a bunch of old books that belonged to my mother in law. My 4-3-2 is a library copy of Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, copyright 1949. My MIL was a public librarian and must have brought this home once it was replaced by a newer edition. I read this in school and love having this old copy that was well loved by many readers. I'm going to post a photo on my community page.

As I look closer, I see that this was a school copy from a Catholic school in the Denver area, where we live.

The question I always have is how to juggle reading more than two books at a time...I'm reading Moby-Dick and The Nine Tailors (Sayers), some short stories, and checked out four books from the library the other day (I couldn't help myself--Tom Lake; Silver Nitrate; September House; and a collection of Raymond Chandler works)...Even listing all of these makes me feel ridiculous. Moby-Dick alone, I feel, requires a steady read for me to stay engaged and see where it's going (first time reading, and I'm at ch22)...

I just found your channel. This was fun. I'll "spin the wheel" and see what I come up with.

I have a whole bookcase that is a TBR. Might need this Roulette to get me reading more from this case. Thanks for a great fun video

Wow, Literary Disco. I haven’t listened to them in ages. What a fun throw back.

Hmm, 4-3-2 = ‘Tis by Frank McCourt. While i’ve had this book for a couple of years, I’ve only read a few tidbits from it. Maybe I’ll finally read the full book before the end of the summer 🤓.

Thanks for clarifying today in your 3/22 UA-cam episode about Bookshelf Roulette, ie that there's no rule that you have to read the book right now, that it's just a fun idea to just revisit bookshelves and take a look at a random book. ...It's nice to even just give them a little attention!!
