Classic Game Room reviews the ATARI FLASHBACK PORTABLE from AtGames, a portable Atari 2600 emulator mobile game system with 60 build in games and room to grow with an SD card slot.
This is basically the same unit as the AtGames Sega Master System I reviewed last year, which I also liked. The build quality seems appropriate for the price and the screen and buttons and d-pad are good.

the 2600 Berzerk sucked. They should make 2 versions of Berzerk, the 2600 version and an original arcade quality version. I'm sure this unit is more than capable of running it.

***** oh, the 2600 Berzerk wasn't bad in itself, but when compared to the arcade version, it sucked. I'm sure this unit is more than capable of running the arcade version as well as the 2600 version so they should include both
I'm with you on the Lynx flashback idea!
It's strange how these flashback handhelds are never of actual handheld systems. Maybe Nintendo will do a gameboy version after they successfully sold all of the 28 nes minis they put in stores!

That thing looked amazing but impractical at the time.
Very powerful, but also very bulky and ate batteries like nobody's business.
A modern remake of one would be able to fix all of it's flaws, while keeping the awesome.
Lynx or any other Atari console other than the VCS2600 is too obscure for AtGames. Plus, they wouldn't do a new case that looks like a Lynx anyway because it's cheaper to just use the same case every year.
How about Atari ST,5200 & 7800??
The model 2 Lynx was not that much larger that the SEGA Game Gear, about 2 cm in width (mostly because the Lynx' sides are more curved) an 1 cm in thickness. And they both ate 6 AA batteries in a few hours.
They got a game gear one now, so that fits the bill. Gameboy would be better though.

would be so much nicer if they added some wood grain finish and actual graphical style , rather than just another non description case

ET's infamous Atari 2600 game is the worst "real" video game ever made thanks to a bunch of Laughing Joking Numbnuts who probably tried to program the whole doggone thing in a week.
Imagine a n64 portable... That would be my favorite handheld.

I bought the 2017 version from eBay for $25 with 70 games built in, with everything to charge it and hook it up to my TV, this is a perfect addition to my Atari collection. 🕹

Looking at that Frogger...I haven't played my 2600 version in awhile, but that seems to look more like the 5200 version to me,

Ronald Spillman third party companies make controller adapters for 5200 that allow you to use a 2600 controller or sega Genesis controller
Yeah the 2600 Frogger is way more chunky with almost no graphical detail at all.

It is terrific if all over 200 Atari 2600 games are on this portable, then it is a complete endless Atari fun. Do not forget the A & B levels on both sides

Graphics look sharp on the LCD screen, gamepad with all console buttons and a SD slot for extra games... With a decent A/V to HDMI upscaler, this looks like a good modernized Atari 2600 console not using any Raspberry Pi.

Honestly believe some of the games fixed to play on the FBP, are good. Took forever to get Mr. Do!'s Castle on it to work. Juno First works fine as well.

The only game things they didn't steal were my NES power pad, Dr Chaos, Super Mario Bros 3, and two Atari 2600 controllers :p

The thing that makes it instantly awesome is the fact that you can add ROMs to it to expand your game roster. which makes me wonder can it handle Homebrew games like Halo 2600?

Is that the arcade version of Frogger? Because it doesn't look like the Atari 2600 version of Frogger I remember.

Never been a fan of AT Games handhelds - the ones I've seen all had weird screen scrolling issues and duff sound reproduction. But this looks GREAT!

Some of the games appear to be the Atari 8bit (computer/5200) versions. That Frogger is definitely the Sega 8bit version I loaded from cassette tape into my Atari 400. The built-in Pac Man (not shown) also appears to be the 8bit/5200 version. Interesting. So the unit plays Atari 8bit games too?

I highly recommend. Get the newest model with 80 games and order the 1000 game preloaded SD card off ebay for less than 20 bucks. Pure nostalgic bliss.

Nice to know that there's someone else who also has a massive collection of games and systems and ends up playing Atari 2600 ;). The only problem I'd have with buying this would be taking this with me to play games on-the-go instead of my Nintendo Switch...

It might be based on the case design of the portable Sega Genesis model. I think the portable master system had only 3 thumb buttons

Draygone RPGMmag It's the same shell as the Sega Genesis portable, so they made the five other buttons i to the switches on the originL 2600, like reset, difficulty, etc.

Is this the same hardware as the ATGames Sega Genesis Ultimate Portable Game player? I recently bought one of those (love it) and was wondering if it would play games for other systems (NES, SNES, and yes, Atari, etc). As such, I was wondering if I could just get Atari ROMs and load them on that machine.

Eric G you're not getting it. Downloading a rom doesn't make you a robber or a thiev, or doesn't need to be something illegal. Most of roms from 80's are abandonware and that means that it doesn't have copyrights anymore, it just don't belong to nobody, and even if not, you can have a rom legally for 24 h. or you can keep it if you if you legally own a copy of the game. I do not defend piracy but roms can be used in many legally ways and many nice purposes like education or scientific

Atari games were made with hand sized joystick control in mind (not a thumb pad), can you hook one up to this, maybe using Bluetooth?

No, Frogger is a Konami game. It was only published by Sega. Which is why it appeared on nearly every console in existence.
My bad, I wasn't totally sure it was a Sega game (I guess I learned a while ago it was a Konami game but had forgotten). What threw me off is that I know that Frogger and Zaxxon are the only two "Sega sanctioned" ports for the Tandy Color Computer (CoCo).
Anyhow my original point was more about the fact that this is the arcade version, while other games on this console are Atari 2600 versions, which is even weirder since it's not an Atari game.
They did the same thing with Space Invaders in other Flashback units. The arcade (or pretty close to it) version instead of the 2600 version.

Technically it could be hacked to run Lynx games as all games on this are already emulated.

Instead of the 2600 why not bring back the 8-bit or 16-bit computer line in some portable form or fashion. The 2600 has been done to death. It's time to retire it. I would really like to see them do an XE or ST laptop with SD card slot and HDMI display port with the same vintage look. That would be awesome.
