      Fun fact: Joe Strummer of The Clash was left handed, but he had to play right because he couldn't afford his own guitar when he was learning. By the time he could afford his own he didn't want to re learn the instrument, so he just kept playing right handed. This meant he had no precision in his picking hand, hence the stage name "Strummer".

      And no offense but recently I've felt that saying "they've been doing this for x decades" can be pretty meaningless, be it the expertise on the subject or other skills (like communication between the teacher and the student or a salesperson and a customer etc.).
      So. They might be experts or they might not.
      I have a fresh example, took my guitar to the local shop to get it set up because it was set up wrong (by the seller who btw claimed to be a professional as well). I wanted to point out some things (mainly the angle on the bridge) I thought were wrong and he brushed me off with "I've been doing this for 40 years". So I shut up and went with, "Okay, I'll let you to do the job."
      And guess what. He set up the bridge wrong... 🤣 Also, no relief in the neck. So... in this case, having the 40 years experience wasn't much of a value.

      @@molekyyli I've been following his course (as a total beginner) since march and the only time he shows left-handed is if you go and see his "Nitsuj" videos, where he shows us his own practice using the left hand and following his own course. Which has actually been really beneficial for me personally, to see someone else having the same struggles and knowing when something is "good enough" to move on. He also often mentions that he changed something, because when trying it out it made less sense than he had imagined.
      All the actual teaching is done by him showing proper technique with his right hand ;-) So idk you've might have come across some remark in a random video or something. Don't get me wrong, it was very boring beyond a point, but I'm getting paid to work on something I love in general which is music, and in all reality the longer they take the more I'm getting paid, so what do I have to get flustered and irritated about? I certainly wouldn't be less bored sitting behind a gas station counter or a pile of planks with an orbital sander for eight hours of my day.
      But yeah, ultimately these guys are doing a different sort of job, but in the end they're getting paid to do what they love. While I imagine the other musicians will probably get a percentage of sales, Rob might have even been paying them by the hour, which brings it to being an even closer example to mine.

I have tried to play a left-handed guitar with the strings reversed and it was too difficult. • @ivan_osorio
      @ivan_osorio 3 роки тому +18

      One thing that is particularly cool about this is that on stringed instruments, like guitar, your hands are responsible for different aspects of music. If you play lefty, your left hand is suddenly completely in control of rhythm and your right in control of harmony, whereas it's the other way around for right-handed players. The switch between these two systems involves more than the muscle memory required to shape the chord and the strength to press the strings correctly.
      (of course, more advance techniques will mix the aspects and blur the lines between each hand, such as tapping and fret-hand muting, but the core of it still stands for the most part)
      Really cool that he did this. Teachers often forget what being a beginner really feels like.

I've spent many an hour teaching friends how to do some foods and nothing helps more than going over the entire recipe from scratch, taking ntohing for granted and slowly making your way back up. So far, it's helped me learn some knife skills left-handed, how to pleat some doughs in many different ways and some interesting ways to substitute for things I can't get from the market with their home-made/McGuyver versions. It's really cool to see how much people struggle when they're playing guitar with the wrong hand and it's also a bit annoying to walk into a Guitar Store and only see 3 guitars that you can actually play properly and even then, it still feels strange because i use 12s and these guitars usually have 9s on them, although that's a story for another day.

      I'm a left handed guitarist too and I can play in two ways which are
      1). playing Left hand guitar with strings in straight (E,A,D,G,B,E)
      and
      2).Right hand guitar holding it upside down in left hand & playing with strings (E,B,G,D,A,E).
      I started with playing the standard left hand guitar but later when I wanted to further expand & try out playing other people's exotic guitars(most oftenly right handed ones) I had no other way but to learn them upside down so that I can just get some good feel of my playing as fast as I can.
      The chord structures & holding positions and also improvisation are what I am almost used to now.
      I find this way of playing very interesting & sometimes come up with completely different & beautiful new patterns or ideas. Infact I'm completely in love playing the right handed guitar upside down now, & I think that's the way I'm more diving into now. Also it helps me if I want to try others guitars which are most of the time right handed & can play immediately on them without looking for that specific left handed one.
      Most of the time non-guitarists, non-musicians or people in general don't notice this way of playing but some true observers do notice it for sure.

      @@GarrettX001 I've heard about people running into a wall because being lefties forced to play right-handed instruments (a guitar or a violin). IMO there's a reason why the hand that is the dominant for most people (right) is the hand that strums or bows and not the other way around. Some of those lefties (on guitar) got past the barrier when they switched hands and relearned everything.
      I noticed while playing video games (with a controller = layout for right-handed) that in some tough spots I couldn't beat the game simply because I'm a lefty and my right hand is the weak one that couldn't push the button as fast and in a good rhythm as my left hand could. There's a reason why they placed that button on the right side of the controller and not on the left.
      If I decided to pick up a violin, I can easily imagine how much harder it would be to be precise with the pressure and movements when using a right hand in compare to using my dominant hand. And there's more reasons why orchestras don't just simply allow to play anybody lefty there (can't remember them but somewhere heard about that).
      But everybody's choice what they're gonna do. I decided it's not worth the risk whether I'm gonna run into that same wall.
      And honestly, I think there just simply should be options for lefties when possible and practicable (not talking about every little unimportant thing) - if the lefty wants to use them. Why the hell not? Why shouldn't we have the option? Isn't like 10 % of people lefties? It's not like it's THAT rare.

    • @GarrettX001
      @GarrettX001 3 роки тому

      @@molekyyli But again, with a two handed system of anything, it's a practice makes perfect dilemma. For example with video games, on a controller, would someone left handed also be able to respond to moving and aiming faster (Using FPS as example, probably most popular genre) and have an advantage there? I seriously feel it is people self-imposing these challenges upon themselves because they've been told that life will be harder as a left handed person. As a child, yes, scissors were annoying, but I grew up into an adult and got used to the function of literally 90% of objects being designed a certain way, and so far it's going well. The option for redesigned things is clear, but it's not in handedness, it's in the disabled community.
