As a young man I would take things apart just to see if I could understand how things worked, I have never lost that curiosity and that is why I enjoyed this video. Thanks Robert 🧐
Why did you stop ? I virtually take apart everything before I throw it away, keeping screws and usefull parts. I learn along the way and I always have a screw, nut or washer when I need one.
At the moment i'm taking apart my neighbors aio printer before i scrap it. Good stuff inside 🤘
I did the same, and to this day my curiosity still drives me to pull all manner of things apart, though I’m yet to put any of them back together again.
Same here. It has become extremely extremely useful. I have been able to fix so many things and not afraid to take anything apart to fix things.
Most people just think of electronics and devices as nebulous magical things, which they are magical in being amazing, but people are ultimately powerless when it comes to even the thought of even thinking about fixing something.
It has helped me to understand and learn all the different methods how metal and plastic parts are fastened, attached and clipped together, how things are parts are before I even take something apart to know how to get it apart, and some super super basic knowledge of electronics that helps me a little bit. I would love to learn more though to be able to build and fix more things though.
The planetary gears are the real treasure. Extremely hard to get hold of otherwise. They often come in multiple stages which means you can customise the desired gear ratio. Even the cheap single speed (36:1) models have two stage reduction gears. I removed the first stage, transferred the pinion to a brusless motor and now have a compact drive for an electric kayak.

I cannot tell you how many times I took my HO scale locomotive apart and had to whine to my dad to put it back together. After the fourth or fifth time you would think I would remember how to put the thing together but... nope. Had to whine to my Dad again. RIP, Ed. Miss you!

That's sooo weird. I was into transformers as a kid. When I would get bored of playing with the toys, I would disassemble them and then reassemble them with other toy parts. But yeah, I took everything apart too.
Oh boy does this resonate with me. But here I am with a disassembled drill in my lap anyway. It's still fun.
having the chuck on the motor also makes it easy to use the motor as a generator, attach it to a windmill propeller or water wheel and your set.
I have 3 of those exact drills. With it in a couple of sets, an impact driver, 2 circular saws (one with major case damage ready for disassembly) and a saw which I cannot name at this stage (brain fart). I have pulled apart old 12v cheap drills though and the motors are super useful. I also have a drawer full of 775, 795 and other 24v motors. Super useful

The speed controller is handy.I used one for a led light dimmer
I've heard tale that they can be used in conjunction the motor and a second motor as sort of manual mosfet free speed controller for larger electric motors/loads

@@davidhaykus1568 I doubt if he talks like that to everyone everywhere. I think he panders to a certain type of subscriber in order to increase his channel views. He certainly has a large number of views and subscribers. The last time I heard that type of humor used so much was was in junior high school.
The batteries are extremely useful i have over 2000 of them and have created a power wall to run my shed off grid.
Great video, the variable motor controller in the trigger is a powerful voltage regulator too.
I'm really into gardening, and have looked into urban farming and small scale farms. You're right about these motors being good, drills are used all over small scale farming to power harvesters, cleaners, weeders and such.
I have a small pile of the motor and clutch bits from every drill I got for free, I can't bring myself to discard them when I know 2 of them could make a very beastly differential for a childs electric "power wheels" vehicle
funny coincidence, yesterday I picked up a free cordless drill intending to use the motor, today I happened to find this video and when I went back to my drill I found I had picked up the same B&D model (or at least very similar) that you showcase here. Nice video, thanks for sharing. p.s. not sure why it was thrown out, but was easy to hook up a potentiometer + spdt rocker switch directly to the motor terminals and run just fine. Maybe it was an issue with the controller, I havent tested it.
Hand drills are really good for hand crank generators, light weight and powerful.
Those battery packs are designed not to be interchangeable between manufacturers by moulding raised bits in the case next to the connections. If you shave the raised bits off with a sharp knife you can then swap 18V packs between products and chargers at will which can be really helpful when the battery on your drill goes flat but the one on your impact driver is still good. You can see these raised bits if you try to clip a different battery pack onto your tool and find it won't slide into position.
I saw a video sometime ago about various adapters you can buy to enable batteries from one manufacturer to be used with another manufacturers cordless tools. I can’t find it now to give a link but it is on you tube somewhere, I think it was posted by an American. It might be worth looking for yourself if you are interested. I know the adapters are available in the states.
This has opened up my mind. I have a cheap black and decker cordless that works great but the battery has been long gone. Was figuring I could either throw it in the trash which I don’t like being wasteful, or try to learn how to build my own battery pack.
Do you know if all you need is the right voltage? Or do you also need to worry about the amps and or watts?
Right now even the broken stuff here is $30 plus in USA dollars. I don't have a clue how that translates to pounds.

Thank you for all the very clear instructional videos. Recently I got myself a little knitting machine (Sentro 48 needles). It works by you turning the crank by hand. Now, there is an adapter made for this little machine with a Hex Steel Bit Power Screwdriver Attachment for Drill, that allows you to run it with an electric hand drill/screwdriver. I wish to one up it and hook my drill/screwdriver up to a foot pedal. Do you have a video that will teach me how to do that? Thanks.
Hi Robert, very nice video, one point you did not touch here is that you can use the motor also as a generator. you will need a reasonably high torque to run it as a generator though.
I just took apart a old 3/8 drive LONGYUN 25 volt drill obviously from china!! The gears in this thing that’s packed in the head is amazingly complex and if you open it and aren’t careful you’ll send 15 or 200 little round toothed gears 🤣 I did so now I’m hoping to repurpose the drill body with another motor because the original is burnt up inside!! Another project one day

nice video Robert got two of them in my cellar batts are shot on them but the rest still works the clutch and gearbox on them are very useful.

RMS, the 18V batteries are good for powering G-scale locomotives. I run my LGB locomotive off of one and have a radio control unit in there to control speed and direction. It works great and I don't have to clean the oxidation off the track to run it! It runs for hours.
I did a video on a drill ones, changing it from nickel metal hydride to lithium 18650s. It is still working fine. I believe that is what they are using in the 3018CNC models. Rating them at 10,000 watt motors.
And you can also use the motor as a DC generator. Very important!

I need to figure out how to use an old drill motor to power a garden cart to help in pushing it uphill with a full load.
Hey my friend, could you do another video showing how to charge the drill battery by driving the motor, e.g. Put a fixed wheel in the chuck, attach it to your bike with the wheel in contact with your tyre, cycle round the block etc. and charge your drill's battery. May ( or not ) require a switch and additional wiring to change between drill mode and charger mode.

Hi Robert, Like this post..I’m making a driveway gate..simple idea of a hidden wheel one side and post hinge on other…i wanted to repurpose an old battery drill to “forward reverse” a wheel to open/close gate… my question to you is can i attach a simple remote control to activate drill to do these commands?…I really hope you can shed some light on my project…many thanks!!

I believe the motors are Johnson 775's as you say used everywhere. Did see a guy put Four of these on a bike pannyer frame at rear with 8" drone fan blades. Pushed him along as motors have a free running rpm of something like 18'0000 rpm. Sounded like a massive bumble bee passing. Incidentally the Chinese motor copies will not have the same torque or long time running as the Johnson versions???? Excellent drill breakdown video sir.

Nice one Rob. I’ve repurposed two cordless drills by ‘converting’ to mains supplied 18v dc in order to 1. Drive a homemade bench mounted disc sander and 2. Driving one of those drill/chisel sharpener bench mounted systems...they work a treat and, obviously, didn’t therefore get thrown out. Over the years I’ve also bought many 18650s (used for led torches) and would dearly love to simply swap these into dead battery packs but I, excuse the term, sh*t myself about trying to solder them etc and so have never tried. I’ve seen the capacitor based hobby-style ‘welding’ kits but still have not got the balls to try one. Your vid has rejuvenated my thinking again and given me another idea. Thanks mate 🙂🏴👍
It costs a bit more than I like to suggest for entry level, but battery spot welder with 'capacitor energy storage' is what I would suggest to the novice, the results are very reproduceable with those and just order in an extra set of Nickel Strip and have a go for a couple weekends self learning.
Lithium Ion batteries don't like the heat, so this is one case where I really do shy away from using an iron on them although you can buy case holders for those cells as well.
Just make sure to get an active balancer if you plan to do anything too exotic where the pack is likely to never be fully charged/discharged ... such as anything solar based.
Although not being the first one to tell this story, but...
I'm inmidst replacing the poisenous NiCd batteries of my centuries, pardon decades old 9.6V Bosch drill (still without slipping clutch) by repurposed 18650 ex-notebook Li-cells. 3 of those in series gives a max. of 12.6V (fully charged), voltage dropping slightly under load, resulting in the perfect voltage and endless power! 🤩
I'm planning to use two of those sets in parallel, in short a 3s2p configuration, doubling the operating time of the original battery pack easily. 😎
I'm working on it for half a year now (intermittently), since the devil is in details 😈: I'd like to fit the whole bunch in the original compartment, preferably without major damage to both battery pack *and* compartment. And this prooves to be a challenge! 😜
Additionally I think about best practices for recharging, since the original charger fits the NiCd charging curve, not the LiCoO2 curve. I will take a closer look to the old charger. Ripping apart the pack every time for recharging woudl be a pain..., so we'll see of what can be done about.
I just salvaged a blender motor but it's got like six buttons and 3 Xtra wires running into the motor. I wonder if you might do a blender motor video?
I have used motor from cordless Saw as generator in my vawt.
have 2 like that waiting, meant for a small cart, driven by that motor. Wanted to make a cart to move boxes from one end of my addict to the other. Ceiling height is low, so being able to "send boxes" to the other end and perhaps even, pushing them off the cart down there, would be cool. Cheers

the first decently fast motor for my old vintage RC car was a 6volt motor from an old dust buster been harvesting DC motors out of stuff ever since.
I swapped the stock cheap consumer grade motor on a cool rc car for a 9 volt drill motor and that thing goes. I did have to hack up a bit of the rc car to fit the bigger motor and customize the gear engagement but the outside body looks 100% stock haha

I was after a parts washer pump/transfer pump (filtered)/aquarium pump to use for a diy parts washer but these pumps have become extinct snd their replacement are singular use garbage that costs far too much for something that can’t be passed it’s warranty or next seasons model…
Not I can jerry rig an old drill to a drill powered pump. Hard part will be putting a switch or a some kind of slow restrictor (something to replace the deadman adjustable trigger….)
Maybe attach an old mowing throttle to the drill/trigger without heavy modifications and keep it tidy in a nice box

You can of course replace the 18650 batteries if you need to. Also for the last 3 videos you have some dirt on the lens in the middle.
They work as hand crank Generators too.

I love coming across old battery tools people don't want. I recently got a hold of a jazzy mobility scooter and the joystick and box were no good. I took 2 drills. One on each armrest and hooked one to each motor. So right drill controlled right motor and likewise for the left. It drove like a zero turn mower and works great. But I was wondering if any of y'all could tell me the best way to acquire a trigger style throttle control for pmdc that is rated for over 24 volts? The higher the better
At my local rubbish tip, there's always a good selection of Dyson stuff - wonder why? - and a chance to get your hands on that famous V11 digital motor.
@@phils6926 I was able to get ahold of I think it was the v6 version. They got rid of because the battery sucked and they didn't realize they didn't have to buy the uber expensive OEM replacement. I still have it and it runs on 24 volt kobalt

Robert, what do you know of "flashing" worn out Ni-Cad batteries back to life? I have an old bosch drill the battery wore out. I saw a video on doing this with a mig welder. Something that can deliver a higher amount of volts. Establish which is positive and negative on the welder (wire feed or earth contacts being either + or -), disable the wire feed then zap the battery contacts?

I have seen converters to take cheaper battery packs from one manufacturer for use on a higher end manufacturers drill (or other battery powered tool). I'm sure people would realise you would have to take into consideration the voltage you are drawing from the battery to the tool & the electronics installed to prevent this implemented on some high end stuff but I have been thinking about how to mould myself a nice little converter as it looks quite do-able. I've started picking up some very cheap 12v tool sets now everyone has moved over to 18 & 24v to make myself a set that would use the same battery (these old ones seem to have less anti-tamper electronics to interfere).
You should get a 3D printer. Would give you unlimited possibilities once you learn how to operate and use them and set up 3D models.

you might want to keep the ferrite beads in. These are there to reduce radiated emission.

@@Str8Reckless63 Well, I sometimes test for radiated and conducted emission. When you have a dc motor like this or a series AC motor, anything with a collector the biggest source of emission is this motor.

I was tinkering with a rear projection TV, and after taking apart the lamp housing there was a tiny radiation sticker(Kr85 200 nCi). Something clicked in my mind and I stopped. Without your comment, I may have just continued. Harmful or not, I am thankful for your tip. Appreciate your reply as I didn’t realize it was 2yrs ago ✊
@@Str8Reckless63 Your welcome. Funny though, the radiation sticker you refer to is about radioactive emission. I was talking about electromagnetic waves, eg, radio waves emission for which ferrite beads are effective.. Kr85 is a radioactive isotope of krypton, 200 nCi is 200 nanocurie. Not a lot. You can tinker all you want with it but do not put it under your pillow, swallow it, file, saw or drill it, give it to your childern .... you got the idea ... and dispose of it properly.

actually I'm in the deep lockdown, so I cannot try myself.
Therefore a quick (silly) question: Does it need any changes to run this powerful motor as a generator?
If I may answer that : It will work as I generator if it has a permanent magnet as stator. This one probably has. If it has an electromagnet as stator ( series motor ) it might generate due to earth magnetic field to get it going and if a load is present to make sure current flows. You see : when there's no magnetic field in a series motor you can rotate the rotor as much as you like but no voltage will be induced. Once it starts due to earth magnetic field current will flow, stator will be magnetized and it will generate. Sufficient earth magnetic field under correct angle must be present.
So it's an excellent question imho. Not a silly one at all.

Hi. Motors are DC and if decent are Johnson 775 high torque motors. With high rpm.Will tolerate over voltage....to a point!
Probably bog standard brushed DC motors. Would be interesting to pull apart a brushless drill as they come on the second hand market.
Yes, this basic type of motor will provide an output as well. I might try one with scope attached to see exactly what it looks like.
i have been wracking my brain for a long time trying to think of what to power my diy bead roller with, i have a makita with a broken handle, i will adapt the trigger to a foot switch...thanks friend...Yah bless...linear thinker doug, haha (show me and i will build anything tho, haha)

so one week we're taking our mains corded drill and making it run from a battery.... then the next week we're taking a battery drill to bits so we can plug it into the mains. Am I tho only one who thinks we could skip a step here?

Great video as always. So i bought a 12v drill (new) and without battery as I only want to use the motor and trigger. I connected it to my 12v DC car battery and in less than a blink of the eye the heavy cable from the battery to the motor started getting super hot and the motor + terminal wire started to melt. No idea why. Do you?

Love your ideas and videos but don't you think if they're here to see what they can make from a drill from the trash we'd know how the drill works, I mean honestly someone that doesn't know what a drill is wouldn't even bother picking it out the trash and start messing with it so we have an idea on how to use a drill. The actual problem is get to the point of what you're going to use it for.... lol
