In my research on the greats of Jazz, I found it heartbreaking that a larger majority of these extraordinarily gifted and talented African-American musicians were subjected to despicable racial segregation, discrimination and horrendous abuse. One such example being Nat King Cole. 💔- NDC...
“Legendary singer Nat King Cole, America's first black television star, suffered a campaign of racist abuse at the hands of his white Hollywood neighbours, a documentary has revealed.
The singer was subject to months of protests against his family when they moved to the exclusive Hancock Park area of Los Angeles - culminating in his dog being poisoned and his lawn being defaced with the word 'n*****'.
Cole became the first black person to live in the well-off suburb, which has been home to the likes of Howard Hughes, Katherine Hepburn and Mae West.
But his arrival in 1948 sparked protest from other residents - starting with a legal battle by the Hancock Park Property Owners Association to try to prevent him from buying the house.
The association's efforts failed and the jazz pianist continued with the purchase. The group then tried to buy the house from him.
A previously unpublished covenant for the property states that the home was for whites only and not for 'any person whose blood is not entirely that of the Caucasian race' - with the only exception being for servants.
The same year that Cole and his family moved to Hancock Park a US Supreme Court ruling banned racially restrictive property covenants.
A BBC Four documentary, featured interviews from the crooner's family and friends - including his late wife Maria, and fellow entertainer Harry Belafonte.
Mr Belafonte said: 'It was not an easy time for him or his family; nobody wanted him.'
In one of her last interviews before her death in 2012, his widow Mrs Cole said: 'They really just didn't want any undesirable people in there. I don't know how they had the guts to say it.'
His daughters also revealed that the family's lawn was defaced, with the word n***** burned onto the lawn.
Daughter, Timolin, said their dog was also killed.
'Somebody threw poisoned meat over the wall and it killed him.'
Nat King Cole: Afraid of the Dark, directed and produced by Jon Brewer, details his life through a series of interviews and his private journals, up until his death to lung cancer in February 1965.”

What a beautiful and touching tribute to one's heart of these most talented people of the beginning of jazz to these modern day times. Doug's in depth history, especially of the struggles of the black American artists, gave light to their life's story. The names and dates of their birth and death below each image cements their legacies and adds that extra timeframe to these most recognizable names. "Let it ride" throughout seems most appropriate a repetitious lyric that. Neil chose for "Jazz Time" as they all 'let it ride' to finally be known as one of the greats!

Not knowing much about jazz, I understandably felt out of my depth; a fish out of water. I recently received a comment from a viewer on one of my videos that he was a jazz buff. That clicked a switch in my memory bank about Neil actually doing a jazz number decades ago. This song otherwise, would not have come to the fore. My research took me on a journey of discovery, some fairly unpleasant. My estimation of these talented/gifted individuals has taken a sharp rise; dramatically so. The discrimination these African-American musicians had to endure offstage yet that never seemed to impinge on their outstanding craft. They persevered and flourished. Much newfound respect and admiration.

Oh my goodness Doug, you reminded me of this song "Let it ride" I heard so many years ago! Completely forgot about it, but hearing it now after so long brought back the memory of my utter confusion and cluelessness as to what it meant. It was in one of Neil's LP records I used to play and I remember thinking "what on earth, Neil?" when I heard the song, waiting for some other words, totally nonplussed! Didn't know anything about jazz either - excepting how it sounded (courtesy of my lovely jazz playing friend Carlton K). But Donita's comment "they all let it ride" hits the nail on the head and now I feel I have a little bit of a clue. Sad that they all had to let it ride.
Your video is truly touching. I had no idea that Nat King Cole had to suffer so much just because of the colour of his skin. It made me feel like crying. What a horrible world where humans can knowingly inflict such pain on other humans (and even their pets,) it's shocking and heartbreaking beyond words.
Hats off Doug for all the love, respect, care and effort you have put into getting this video together. Thank you and all who help you with your wonderful work for this site🙏

This song is on Neil's "September Morn" album (1979). I suppose like you, it did not have a major impression on me decades ago. I however, saw it in a new light of late.
Indeed! Donita has that uncanny ability to "hit the nail on the head", to the extent that when in the throes of creating a video I might not fully come to the realisation of the meaning behind the words of songs... Donita then, come to the rescue. She verbalises that which may otherwise remain latent.
Until I commenced on this video, I was oblivious to what those beautiful, talented/gifted African Americans lived through... accepted as performers/entertainers but shunned by society. They _had_ to _know_ their place... regardless. My pleasure Nas, a bonus, I benefitted from this exercise. Take care, Doug
