- What’s the environmental impact of online shopping and what are the solutions to make it more sustainable?
Climate Lab is produced by the University of California in partnership with Vox. Hosted by conservation scientist Dr. M. Sanjayan, the videos explore the surprising elements of our lives that contribute to climate change and the groundbreaking work being done to fight back. Featuring conversations with experts, scientists, thought leaders and activists, the series demystifies topics like nuclear power, food waste and online shopping to make them more approachable and actionable for those who want to do their part. Sanjayan is an alum of UC Santa Cruz, a Visiting Researcher at UCLA and the CEO of Conservation International.

A lot of these comments are arguing that you have to drive to the store, so its better to do online.
Guys, Vox acknowledges that. They are saying that it’s better to do standard shipping vs two day. That’s the intent of the video.
I mean, you don't have to drive to the store. I don't.
raney150 > You're right. I don't have a driver license, so all shopping I do by myself is either on foot, by kick scooter, by bus or by streetcar.
@@raney150 only U.S.A. citizens think: normal shopping=driving to supercenters
Unless your in 2020 when you might need it faster
@@raney150 You think elderly folks in my town can just walk 15 miles to the store and 15 miles back with all their groceries? its just not realistic dude
Normal delivery button should be renamed green delivery button! It's easy to add it and a lot of people would actually use it.
Quick Fix
That's clever
almost like its a... quick fix
iTrialpha was that a pun
Quick Fix That is a great idea! And companies might actually benefit from it...
Quick Fix
They don’t label something “green” unless they can charge more money for it
this is actually a great idea-when people say “two day shipping” and “five day shipping” for the same price, they think, why would i voluntarily choose the longer shipping time with no incentive? but if they see “green option”, then they’ll understand that it’s the more environmentally friendly option.
Amazon and Walmart are probably 2 of the biggest culprits.
It's a super easy change. I'd use a green option button.
wow loser i have amazon prime so i get free 2 day shipping! Suck it!
WooferJr good for you.
Did I say I cared what you did? Oh wait... NOPE. So go suck it yourself
Amazon has a no rush option and they even offer you a $5 coupon for using it..
Where I live, shipping is never free lol
My company would have a green option that is free. You pay more for fast service.
"somebody chose the green option !"
"SEND THE PIGEON!!!"
Not gonna lie, the thought of pigeons delivering packages sounds pretty novel!
Vox - 5 minutes can save you 15% or more on carbon emissions
is this a geico reference?
This guy bought soap online
Omg lol
If it's cheaper and you don't need it today, why not?
I just feel like a box, packing foam/bubbles for a bottle of soap is hugely wasteful, not to mention the 2 day shipping part. @@grumfeldvanderspooijwanker1627
@@grumfeldvanderspooijwanker1627 True
@@melikesleepy Also true.
In australia we’re lucky to get a package within a 2 weeks after we purchased the product! On numerous occasions the shipping costs more than the actual product. And free shipping is a luxury! It’s also not uncommon to wait 2 months for a package. Americans take free shipping and the recourses for 2 day shipping for granted, bc down under we’re so isolated from all other countries, shipping for anything is a night mare!
I live in northern norway and if I buy some electronics or something I get it in the mail in 5 days. That's considered rough in this country.
Your on an island...what did you expect? we don't take things for granted we have a certain level of expectation when we are sold a product or service. if it says 2 day shipping then I expect it, it has more to do with keeping honest advertising standards than "I want it now"....and yes if we lived on an island in the middle of the southern ocean I MIGHT expect my package to get there a bit later than usual.
2-day shipping won't last. It's highly government subsidized in the US, and can't really be sustained. (USPS)
Yeah, too bad for you eh?
Most standard shipping arrives within 2 weeks in the US as well. Also a lot of places don’t have free shipping unless you spend a certain amount of money (usually about $100
thank you vox, i'll be sure to think about this when i go to order christmas gifts online
please tell me you're sarcastic
This video comes out just in time for Tesla new semi truck
which runs off electricity, most of which comes from burning fossil fuels, meaning that the environmental cost will only really drop once we change to renewable forms of electricity generation

Rough Boulder Well, it's a step in the right direction.
What's the environmental cost of watching youtube videos?
U Wot M8 considering you're just running a server, not much
Every 1,000 viewers equals= global warming
Every hour you spend on UA-cam equals 800,000 species of insect going extinct. Specifically YOU. That's what happens when you, personally, spend an hour on UA-cam. Scientists are still trying to determine the cause.
Jordan Crandall legit there is a video online about this
None,Enviromental change is real,But earth is Doug t by itself
im just poor tbh
Honestly, I think even the richest man would say that as an excuse
I’m really poor and cheap. So.
if 2 day shipping is free, standard shipping should be free too
idk how that's relevant?
It's relevant in understanding why some people would choose the free option rather than the standard option. Shipping fees are extremely expensive, though I do online shopping if its something I really cannot find at the stores. But that's looking at something that is 35 dollars and add shipping makes it 40 dollars. While I only make 40 dollars, that's all my money. Shipping cost need to either be lowered or add a fee to faster shipping.
*Thanks Amazon*
Santiago Ferrari Why, is logic and reasoning not good enough for you? Did the part about delivering things faster meaning inefficient use of trucks space, had you confused? It's alright to disagree with something *as long as you aren't making a fool of yourself believing straight up biased lies.*
+Jo King Trump supporters don't have a brain, that's why they fail to reason. 🌚
Darn media! Those scary scary companies want to brainwash me into believing in wind resistance!
Santiago Ferrari lol look even if their political videos are bad, almost all of their videos about facts and stuff like this are well researched. the only one i can think of that wasn't was one on eating less chicken.
Santiago Ferrari every video ever made by everyone has an agenda. The question is whether the agenda is good or bad and whether they managed to stay objective regardless of that agenda.
I wish you could opt out of the bubble wrap and packing stuff, too! For Amazon you can select shipping prime items together or as they become available which I always select together because I hate all of the extra boxes/bubble wrap laying around. There have been many times where I got a whole box full of packing materials that weren't needed or where an envelope would have been fine.

Aka “How can my company save money? Let’s make people feel like they are environmentally friendly.”
If companies really lost money on 2 day shipping do you REALLY think they would offer it to begin with? I mean, most don't, it is only for the largest that it is economically viable.
So trying to equate being environmentally responsible to just being greedy is flawed.
CzarPeppers Even if it is greedy, so? In this case, greed causes less waste. Sounds good to me, I'll take this greed over waste.
Vox sponsored by Lacoste?
Does it make you want to buy a Lacoste after watching the video? If it doesn’t, then it’s not sponsored.
It so seems :D
It does. He looks smart in that t-shirt

Well in India for door to door delivery we use bikes instead of trucks, so you can consolidate up to a particular level only.
This expidited delivery is not a problem however, extra protective packaging is an environment hazard.
Harshit Malhotra There is a limit to what a bike can carry. It can only carry small items, while usually people order the large ones.
Yasaal Abrar I don't know about your country but here, the majority of the items ordered are small in size and frequently purchased.
It is the big items that are rarely ordered like Furniture, Electronic Gadgets etc.
Even in the video he gave examples of apparel not appliances.
This is like saying we should all go back to using horses for Calvary rather than motor vehicles...
Yeah it’s better for the environment, but your talking about major societal REGRESS rather than PROGRESS.
Delivery via Drone is the future - not bikes, or horses....
Harshit Malhotra lol I'm from Delhi. Though I lived in UAE all my life I have a close contact with Delhi as well so that's what I've seen
AIRburst95 Weird, because people of the most advanced countries in the world (Netherlands, for example) use bikes more frequently than cars.
Progress is realizing something you've made causes harm and switching to something more responsible and sustainable, whether that means creating something new or reverting back to old methods.
Man, only if Amazon offered some type of incentive to use standard shipping over there 2 day oh wait they do they give you credit towards your account and they've been doing this for years.

YES DR. SANJAYAN IS BACK! He's always been my favorite Vox reporter.
Btw in Canada the cheapest option is the longest.
We have Standard 5-8 Business Days 5.00$
Rushed 3-4 Business Days 8.00$
Express 1-2 Days 11.80$
So being cheap I've always taken standard, and the products usually get to my doorstep in 2.5-3 weeks because it's Canada Post and temporarily losing packages is their job
YES! Thank you for bringing this guy back! His previous series of videos were amazing!
i've been wondering about this!
DonYelle and Diana and yet your top lazy to google it
As a ups worker this is kinda wrong. With 2 day delivery we fill up two 26foot trailers at the same time hitch them up with most packages filling it up all the way it's to save time and get most packages out to the next building faster. If there is a lack of packages in truck most of the time its due to a lack if packages heading to a rural area with a lower population and thus not enough flow to fill the trucks 100%
DonYelle and Diana I haven’t lol
DonYelle and Diana I want to cuddle with you
They did not have a single industry source in the whole video
If you are going to trash Amazon, get their statement
even before this video came out, I've been questioning why amazon doesn't have some reusable packaging program. For example, imagine you can chose to get your delivery in a tote made of hard recycled plastic, on the condition that you pay for the tote. Then you can return the tote at a local pickup location/warehouse and get the money back for the purchase of the tote. I mean, amazon operates it's own delivery service now so I think they should have a program like this for people who don't like over polluting.
Amazon in Canada is still pretty much just books that take 2 weeks to arrive. (*insert tired dog sled joke here)
we must be using 2 different amazon ca websites then
Amazon in Europe is more expensive than other online shops. Still the most popular one...
Shopping online here is so brutal. Most things have to come from the US, which means longer distances, getting through customs, etc.
you using amazon in the way back machine or something?
In rural Newfoundland, it takes a minimum of one week, sometimes two or more to get things shipped on UPS or Canada Post. I rarely use online shopping, but when I do I just assume that I need to be patient.
My favorite thing about his videos is he examines a wide spread problem and actually proposes a solution rather than trying to blame someone
I'm disabled and homebound and cannot imagine a world where expedited services, online shopping, and internet were not available. I consider myself lucky to be living now instead of another time...except for that pesky lack of solid health care for chronic diseases.
And how does it compare to building, maintaining, and supplying thousands of behemoth Walmarts and other retail blight across the landscape? In my hometown they cut down and paved over a forested wetland environment - a huge carbon sink - to build a Walmart and strip mall.
There is a video from Bloomberg for sponge city concepts: m.ua-cam.com/video/_elnqk_GQgU/v-deo.html
AnniMcSally Key word: concept. It’s easy to dream up utopic concepts. Epcot was a concept. Look how different our shitty reality is. We’re literally dying years earlier due to pollution in our cities and no one is taking the issue seriously. (If they were, cars would be 100% banned from city centres and rapid electric transport, in the form of streetcars and trolleybuses would be the mode of transit. That’s a whole lot easier than pie in the sky concepts YET ITS NOT BEING DONE.)
At the beginning of the video they said that online shopping is greener than brick and mortar stores, but only when standard shipping is used. Does that answer your question, or are you asking something else?
You have no f*cking idea, what "carbon sink" even means, and how storage buildings are different to traffic infrastructure by their nature and impact on enviroment. Please just shut the f*ck up and stop commenting about the topics that you obviously have no idea about.
Artūrs Savickis, wow. Please don’t have a stroke on my account. If you care so much to get that worked up, why don’t you put that to use and elucidate.
Ordering dish soap online is just about one of the most American things I can imagine 😂
Why don’t the companies fix the issue of carbon emissions? This is like the recycling campaign put on by the plastic/soda/bottle industry a few decades ago. Make the companies invest in electric cars. Tesla came out with an electric 18-wheeler. Get congress to implement a carbon cap to the companies. I pay for the 2 day shipping through an annual fee. Is that going to be reduced if I don’t get 2 day shipping? Probably not. Why do I have to suffer and still pay for the 2 day shipping?? The companies win, and the customer pays for it. Enforce a carbon cap on the companies, and the problem can be managed.
We'll probably just get another "crying Indian" campaign to guilt us into cleaning up their mess again :/
Better yet, a carbon tax. Top economists, liberal and conservative, came out with a strong open letter supporting it not long ago.
Dargies M. Electric vehicles arent an 1 way solution to carbon emissions your just getting more load on the electric grid wich still runs for 60% on fossil fuels xD
The process of making a new vehicle is often a bigger carbon footprint than the entire expected carbon footprint of driving the vehicle. Trying to replace the entire fleet of trucks we have on the roads with Tesla's would just cause more problems. It's a complicated problem because almost every action of any significance that you try to take you have to walk back to the origin of the parts, manufacturing, and other infrastructure involved and usually you find non-renewable energy at every step.
MrPoopyButthole69 I was more focused on the carbon cap or carbon tax idea. The electric vehicle idea was to help out. I agree that electric vehicles have issues in and of themselves. They talked about trucks a lot in the video.
I really appreciate Vox trying to educate us on climate issues, however if they were truly wanting to educate the population on this greatly important issue they should focus on the major contributors of atmospheric gas increases: Agriculture and commercial fisheries, period.
If we destroyed all the cars in the world, all walked everywhere, and no longer emitted any type of fossil fuel pollution, our atmosphere would have virtually no decrease in the gas increase; as long as agriculture and commercial fisheries continue to operate.
Philip Dial yes go veggie
They do have videos about that though
Aj Ajaj vegetarians still depend on agriculture! Veganism has been proven to be one of the most planet friendly diets, because the dairy industry is still mass produced so the overbreeding of cows continues to hurt the planet :~)
They have like 3 videos on that allready, and every bit helpes, i'm allready vegeterian. But I would still want such an option, so I could help the planet even more, even though it's just a small contribution!
Philip Dial that’s just inconvenient, a waste of transportation and we could use a more sustainable option with electric cars.
This sounds like a problem with gasoline vehicles. Let's go electric. Batteries are the future!
Batteries are currently charged with electricity that's generated using fossil fuel.
Michael Taylor sshhhh! dont break the hubris of these people man!
Michael Taylor The move is still more beneficial than continuing to use outdated engines that provide almost no benefits over battery powered vehicles.
+BizyGi Oh Dear God. You're serious...
Rhiro Yonve So you're telling me that it's better for the environment to continuously use engines forever instead of ever making an effort to switch to renewable energy?
And you're asking me if I'm serious? Embarrassing.
Consumerism is the root of the problem. Mass shipping is just some of the leaves
J No, humans/overpopulation is the real problem.
Kyle Tchen bullshit. Human nature is the problem. Advertising is merely an extension of that.
I agree. The North Koreans have this figured out. Lets elect Bernie and make this happen.
Lol. Consumerism is what gives us an economy in the first place. Without consumerism we would still be in the dark ages.
Wrong! No. Emissions and environmental damage is our problem. If we find a way to minimize the damage a person has on the earth then we can have as many people as we want.
We’re going to want as many people as possible to solve these tough problems and expand our race into the cosmos.
I love this dude, he's got such a positive energy about him!
But you didn't address how two-day shipping compares to me driving back and forth to a shopping center!
People diving too and from store.. Plus trucks bring in the goods etc..
Alex Mercado just use regular shipping. it's not that hard to wait 1-2 weeks for something.
i assume that's factored into the chart comparing traditional shopping
It says right in the video that "online shopping (rush)" has a carbon footprint of around 1.75 kgCO2e vs traditional shopping around 1.6 kgCO2e. How do you mean, they didn't address it? ua-cam.com/video/5HOijUtExiM/v-deo.html
David Mulder We still have 0 clue how much that actually contributes into global warming. And honestly how did they get that number? I hope they didn't just assume every single truck is half full
Jokes on you, I live in Hawaii so everything takes 2-4 weeks to get here haha
i love two-day shipping but i didn't even think about this effect. thanks vox :)
As a Prime subscriber in the UK, Amazon gives me £1 video/music/Kindle credit when I choose no-rush delivery. That’s basically a free £0.99 Kindle book each time. Don’t know if it’s similar now in the US.
It is the same way now.
That's cool to hear as a kindle user. Wonder if it's available here in Canada too
They dont do that anymore for me. I do get something but like for something i dont use like prime pantry :/
1. "Green" option is misleading. It suggests that its actually good for the environment as opposed to less harmful.
2. If people are shopping online, that means they're probably not driving to the store to buy those items, right? Doesn't that take cars off the road? One can argue that two-day shipping serves as an incentive for people to buy online.
Sephxus Yea you are right, but his idea isn't bad either, because it makes people think smarter and ahead of the things they need, in result that would make them group more items into standard shipping, instead of buying 2-3 items at a time.
Green labeling is not standardised like organic is for instance. And is most often used to imply a reduced impact rather than no impact.
Right, good points
organic food isn't so much better for the environment either, they have to use more land because their yields are smaller compared to non organic foods. i do agree that green labels would be a good idea for shipping options
Dude, it literally shows the differences at 1:03. How are so many people not seeing this?
So glad to see this partnership continue - M. Sanjayan is brilliant!
Yes climate lab is back!
this sounds like they need better algorithms for storing and automised electric transportation
Amazon already has that option. You can choose standard shipping. I think they even give you a credit towards digital media for choosing that option.
Lauren A I see someone else commented this as well lol.
Yeah it's "No Rush" shipping, and they give different kinds of credit. I have like $30 in Pantry credit stored up right now.
I've stocked up on those Pantry credits too, Michael.
I think they have an expiration date (something like 90 days?). Feels like I've lost some.
Amazon wants to trick you into their Prime by offering a free 2-day shipping. You have to be very careful because this option is always the first choice. It's not worth it as they always ship rather sooner than later.
Happy Friday everyone
What is your roblox account?

5:00 "What if online shops offered a green shipping option?".
Some stores already do here in Sweden. Not saying everybody use it, I certainly don't, but the option is there for people who aren't in a hurry and want to be as environmental friendly as possible. I believe the actual execution of being "green" is a bit different on their end, though, where rather than slower shipment and smarter delivery, it's about calculating the emissions for the delivery and then compensating by funding environmental projects that plants trees or do research into emission reduction, stuff like that. As well as shipping your product in fully recyclable packages, including the packing material.
So not entirely the same thing, but the same in spirit, and still giving customers the option to be more environmental friendly. And a lot of the actual shipping companies here supposedly already do what the video suggest when it comes to making sure delivery trucks never go out half full, and making sure the packages in the trucks are all to the same general area. And that's without any additional fee or being a slower delivery option.
So yay for saving the environment :). Granted, Scandinavia has traditionally been ahead when it comes to being environmentally friendly. But still, crossing my fingers the US starts transitioning more and more towards that too. But it's of course understandable that it'd be more difficult in a much larger country (especially in a country where most companies put revenue above everything else).
*Solution* Eat meat every other day...not every day :)
"A staggering 51 percent or more of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture, according to a report published by the Worldwatch Institute."
katastrofskyy stop eating meat altogether
I drove a delivery truck for a former job. You don't need new signals alerting drivers that light is going to change. We called it be aware of stale green lights. It's a matter of looking ahead for the crosswalk countdown and knowing the light timing, which comes from experience on a route.
When's Amazon implementing the free 9 year shipping?
The secret is that in 9 years they don't even send the product. If you wait long enough, your needs are no longer relevant needs.
@@DrWeird2323 yeah but then you could sue them
TBH green button is dumb... technology and logistics can solve this.
US has this problem because its logistics is based on diesel trucks... Many countries don't have such a problem, like China has free same-day delivery almost country-wide using hi-speed train systems and electric bikes.
The worst part about that is that the US has one of the most robust freight rail systems in the world, the problem is it's used for industry rather than commerce. They ship raw materials around by train and distribute finished goods from domestic factories and ports to warehouses, but it's not used for shipping packages from state to state unless you're doing it cross country (and even then not often)
Still, there is a benefit to helping people be more aware of environmental impacts of their activities, right?
Zach Guo I don't see why you disparaged the green shipping solution. Your suggestion of trains and electric vehicles for delivery is a good one, though it isn't mutually exclusive with the suggestion provided by Dr. Sanjayan. They are in fact complimentary solutions, but Dr. Sanjayan's solution could be more readily implemented than yours. His suggestion is to implement changes to websites that will signal companies to utilize already existing operations. The biggest hurdle businesses would overcome is probably moderately increased storage demands at fulfillment and distribution centers while orders are compiled, assuming the green option is popular. Your solution involves refitting America's rail network for high-speed trains, purchasing thousands of electric bikes, hiring thousands of scooter delivery boys, retraining and redesigning shipment fulfillment networks for bikes rather than trucks, and trying to find a buyer for a fleet of trucks.
Furthermore, regardless of the transportation technologies employed, scarce energy is still consumed in shipping, and the worldwide energy supply still relies heavily on fossil fuels. Electric transports and trains are more efficient and account for less C02 emissions than diesel trucks, but they do contribute.
If the solution you propose is all that is needed to solve pollution problems, why is China among the countries with the worst air quality in the world?
Solution relying on consumers will at best have a marginal effect. Read history, problems like this were always solved by technological advancement or legal action.
About your 'Furthermore', work on your logics, so you think all pollution is generated by delivering packages??
Historically, Legal action has had limited success correcting social issues that result from consumer behavior outside of fascist and communist oligarchies. The U.S.'s war on drugs/addiction is a perfect example. Drugs are illegal, but there is demand, so there's a drug problem. No amount of punishment and no border wall will prevent drugs from being a problem. Legal actions driven by consumer/voter pressure are much more successful. An example is consumer demands for greater food safety led to the meat packing industry improving standards and the FDA to regulate those standards.
That is, all solutions to public problems in capitalist republics ultimately rely on consumers. By adding green shipping options, it raises awareness for those that are unaware of the environmental consequences of their shipping decisions, and gives them a choice to behave consistently with their values. Being frequently reminded which of our decisions have an effect on the environment, more people will begin to shift their values toward environmental conservation. That eventual overwhelming public consensus will make consumer driven legal action (i.e. state support for clean, high-speed rail) a legitimate option, which is currently is not.
About my "Furthermore", it seems I was misunderstood completely. My point was that trains and electric bikes still have a carbon footprint. Trains and electric bikes relocate the pollution generated in shipping from the roadways to the railways and the smokestacks of the coal-fired power plant. Consolidating shipments by allowing for longer shipping times will reduce the carbon footprint of whatever shipping technologies are used. As I said previously, your suggestion is complementary to the one presented in this video. Every step toward more energy conservation is a step in the right direction, because currently most of our energy is derived from fossil fuels. My comment about the poor air quality in China was meant to highlight the flaw in your view that using trains and electric bikes is the only solution needed for the problem.
Lastly, I think you might find you have better conversations with people if you work on a less condescending tone (eg "green button is dumb", "read history", "work on your logics"). It's possible to differ in opinion with someone without resorting to disparagement.
This is one of the reasons I shop locally most of the time. Alongside this, I consider it worth the slightly higher cost to know I'm keeping someone else's job going just that little bit longer. I can also make sure clothes fit while I'm there instead of hoping they fit.
What about the jobs for the delivery drivers and the environmental cost of your individual driving?
You don't tend to get stuff delivered to your house from a butchers and I don't have a car.
the "green option" is an AMAZING idea!
$10 more please for slower shipping. After all it's "Green".
not anymore, Tesla just announced the new semi truck lol
Goat whats that?
where do you think that energy to power the semi comes from?
where do you think that energy to power the semi comes from?
Ethan, it's a step. We can't go from fossil fuel tech to zero fossil fuel tech in a week. The transition will take decades.
The only missing piece will be the last mile delivery truck
Nice. I think many would choose the "green option" (i.e. standard delivery) if they know the consequences. I'll consider this option for now on.
this dude has a great voice, I love listening to him :3
I run a dropshipping site. Can’t wait till Chinese suppliers offer 2 day shipping for free in future it’s bound happen
DJ SLANK〽an you’re part of the problem, not a part of the solution, bud.
Aaron Garcia I'm a truck driver. How you feel now lol
DJ SLANK〽an haha same
I shop on TaoBao and Tmall a lot, they mostly only ship inside China for free.
Aaron Garcia he's actually part of the solution. If I want to buy something from overseas, sometimes a dropshipping site is the only way that I can get what I want.
I guess having lived in Denmark most of my life I have been so thoroughly educated on not wasting energy that I would never use same day / next day delivery unless I really needed it.
I. LOVE. This serie! There's a bunch of little things In our lives that affect the environment that we just do out of habits or convenience, but it's great to rethink about those things. And Doctor Sanjayan; you're great, I hope to see more of you on vox (or in general!)
At what point is there enough consolidation? Five days seems just as arbitrary as two days. Given enough volume, there should be no difference.
true. and there's another issue, if the problem is volume, wouldn't discouraging people from using it cause less volume for each travel? say 10 people used fast shipping in a housing area, that is 10 item per truck going to the place. if only 4 person used fast shipping, then it's just 4 item per truck, which have to go to the area either way. Shouldn't we be encouraging people to use it more so that there will be more volume for each travel?
You all are just looking for excuses because you aren't willing to take accountability for your actions. This video is here to show the impact we have on the environment. Stop being so defensive and start looking for solutions and ways to help reduce our carbon footprint or none of us will have to worry about 2 or 5 day shipping because we'll all be struggling to breath the polluted air around us.

I use the super slow free shipping option
I’m fine with keeping 2, 1 and same day shipping at a premium for some customers. Like amazon prime
Very interesting, now I'm going to switch to the slowest shipping speed for my amazon orders lol
I love this presenter!! Please keep him!!!
I live near Seattle.
Amazon has been talking for awhile about putting DRONE SKYSCRAPERS here for faster delivery than the already 1-day option we all have.
Amazon drones are better for the environment than all the huge trucks on the road run by major retailers.
Use Tesla semi-trucks charged with electricity from solar/wind energy! Simple!!
and those are created by a black hole and don’t require anything. Google how those battery packs are made.
Yeah, I get it. But I need my barrel of lube from Amazon quick.
thank you for bringing back climate lab
So, I am a driver in a major freight company. Now, when there are trailers that go on the longer day routes, they do hold them until they are full. But that isn't going to reduce overall emissions, since they have to send me with or without freight, so they will just send me with either one or two empties, or potentially 3 where 3 are legal. The trailers have to move to keep trailer flow even, so it would make more sense to just ship the half full trailers. So in some ways the 2 day shipping would make little difference, at least at the behemoth company I work for.
Or/and you could go vegetarian/vegan and reduce your cO2 emissions tenfold- over 50% of cO2 emissions are caused by animal agriculture 🌼
Pricing doesn't account for environmental externalities, what's new!
Amazon has this and they reward you for it so?
If you’re in a city, go to a shop. It makes more sense for everyone to walk to one shop that has been supplied by one lorry than for a van to drive round all the neighbourhoods.
Zomato has a food delivery service in India, at checkout they let us choose if we want the restaurant to deliver food with the plastic utensils or not.
Isn't this a self solving issue as the amount of people using online shopping is increasing? Therefore, with more people using the services and considering that the truck capacity stays the same, it should get more and more full, as more people use it. So, in the future the 2 day wait time would actually be similar to the 4-5 day wait time.
Remusas stop using logic - this video was based on emotional arguments, not empirical evidence.
Just because the video was based on emotional arguments, it doesn't mean that the problem itself can't be approached from a different point of view, in my case, logic.
From what I understand, that would just send more trucks in the road, if only the number of customers change. It's a matter of planning on the delivery side that more time allows. Of course, unless something goes horribly wrong, things will be more efficient eventually. Technology.
Remusas Considering the other option is to go yourself to the store to get it, meaning one person in a car design for 5 people maybe, I must say your conclusion is correct. Of course I've never seen the truck half full so I can't even confirm this video got it's info right, they have been wrong (and debunked) before... :/
They would just put more trucks on the road, to ensure delivery dates were guaranteed
if a truck driver knows a red light is coming within a time frame you better know he's going to REALLY speed up. Doesn't seem like a safe idea to me
truck drivers don't drive like these idiots driving cars in the city. Whats the point of going fast to save 20 seconds when they have to drive over 20 hours? not only that, trucks don't accelerate like small cars and it takes them longer to accelerate from 30 to 50, also the amount of gas that will burn will be greater, making them have to stop more often.
What you do instead is control your speed, put truck/car in neutral while its moving at a steady speed and by the time they get to the light its green again (instead of making a complete stop or just making through a light), you have no idea how much gas and brakes that saves.
Of course there will always be people taking advantage of it. Just like anything else in this world.
You try working out of a full truck. Really hard finding that one package in a full cargo area
That sounds like a failure to take advantage of their logistics software on the company side there is no reason that data could not be also used to ensure that trucks were loaded in a sensible order such that you would be working through the truck in a logical order from back to front as you arrive at each address on your delivery plan. Inefficient loading makes no sense from a business perspective either every minute a driver spends in the back of the truck hunting down that package some burried at the bottom of some random stack is a minute when the wheels are not turning and goods are not advancing towards their destination.
Seraphina S I've loaded my truck to the perfect order using the road warrior app. The moment a turn is made everything is all over the place
LOVE Climate Lab. Keep it coming Vox
this guy makes the best Vox videos
VOX is awesome!
Sad. At the beginning, we learn that on-line shopping is better for the environment (I assume mainly because *your* car is insanely inefficient at transporting goods), but that "2-day" shipped online shopping is worse. There was zero discussion of WHY that is. Was it an issue with the study? If they didn't carefully study what Amazon does for 2-day shipping, it was worthless since Amazon captured 43% of online purchases last year, up from 25% in 2012, and likely a much larger share of the 2-day shipping market. The rest of the video talked about trucks. But... you can't ship from the west coast to the east coast in 2 days with trucks (at least, until the US changes the interstates to autobahns). Either, you use an airplane (maybe that's what the study assumed? flying produces way more CO2 than driving), or you locate warehouses within a 24 hour drive of major cities. Most sites can't do the latter, but Amazon can.
Edit: Executive summary of study is here: ctl.mit.edu/sites/ctl.mit.edu/files/library/public/Dimitri-Weideli-Environmental-Analysis-of-US-Online-Shopping_0.pdf
Is it ironic that the tesla semi just came out yesterday?
More coincidental, I’d say.
That wifi talking is brilliant. They can put it GPS systems, gps apps, cars, etc...
That way all cars can tell people a recommend velocity, when to slow down, stop or even eventually put in an "auto acceleration." That way people can drive closer than humanly possible and take off at the same time. This would be a first step in the driverless car future we will eventually reach. Plus it is not as scary for people to adopt compared to the whole "I am not letting a computer drive for me?!?!" idea people have.
Amazon's doing a great job at this. If you have Prime they let you delay delivery by a day to get stuff in fewer packages, or choose No-Rush shipping (which is essentially the green option as shown in the video) and they actually give you money off digital items, as they are saving money too. Love it!
So who else is still going to use 2 day shipping?
Everyone. If you make it the same cost as 5 day, no one will choose 5 over 2.
Me, but if I see a green option, I'll use it for stuff I don't really need.
Climate change denier is still doing it
Best way is to consume less . Don't buy :)😉
*cough* Tesla *cough*
Read their income statement and balance sheet. They're going bankrupt by at minimum 2020.
Carlos Martinez .... Get out
Pretty good ad for the UC system but where is Santa Bárbara?
An alternative solution to delaying shipping times would be to instead get more people shopping online. It's just like how planes can leave on a busy route every few hours without having to fly half empty, but on some less common routes they only run every day and still don't fill up.
Yeah but I want my socks now
I don’t care if I want my fleshlight the next day then I am getting it the next day
comma's dude, comma's
Nah. I like my stuff arriving in a day.
Yeah ! no body gonna tell me i don't need those socks and Dish washing sponges over night !
I like my planet remaining habitable
Marcus Grant its almost certainly that there is going to be a bacteria or something similar alive in case we die
I don’t know Vox, I want waffles tomorrow so that irons gonna go prime
Incidentally, items shipped with mainly air travel - a.k.a. 2 day shipping is actually more efficient. Planes burn less fuel than vehicles.
I am wondering who funded this research. Most people benefit from free (not 2 day) shipping. You save time in driving to the store, waiting in line and drive back. Driving in the traffic with all the traffic lights, creates a lot of pollution. This is not a newsworthy item. It does not speak well of the UC system and its research
I believe two-day shipping will do something to our environment, like the use of gasoline makes the air bad and then contribute to climate change.
The carbon footprint and greenhouse gases are mentioned in the video. Do they really cause GLOBAL WARMING? I have heard two of my teachers who have chemistry background do not see the CO2 associated with global warming. They said CO2 only makes up 0.04% of air so it cannot affect the air so much. That totally changed my mind.
Now I am afraid to say CO2 and global warming in the same sentence. Can anybody tell me what you think?
If someone talks about global warming ask them if they know what a supervalcano is
Radioactive polonium only made up 0.04% of the food I was served, so I ate it.
runze wei aaand? Those teachers were qualified to do there job? It's not about the percentage of co2 in air, now I'm gonna have a hard time getting this right in English but just read a paper on global warming by pretty much any scientist and you're gonna have all the information you're going to need to draw your own conclusion. Spoiler, it has at least something to do with global warming but is of course is not the only this contributing to the problem.
THX. I agree
It's not about what we "think." It's about facts. Your teachers are just straight-up wrong. Here's NASA's primer on the topic; it's a good place to start. climate.nasa.gov/causes/
For more information, there's ample resources out there on how greenhouse gases cause climate change.
I don't care, I want my purchases in two days.
OK. But would you mind if there was a "green" option for shipping? Maybe if you feel like you need to take of the planet later on in life, you could use that green option to decrease your carbon footprint.
Climate change denier spotted
Online retailers should discount prices if we use standard shipping as an incentive for customers and then companies should get tax breaks for reducing carbon emissions by doing programs like that.
The "Green Option" is brilliant. I really hope that online retailers run with that idea!
