I read a book a few years ago called Flags over the Warsaw Ghetto, and it starts off with describing all the shades of political affiliation of the Jews in Poland and Russia, and they were really split all the way from Betar and Jabotinsky to true communists.
very good! specially because one can see how complex is the jewish society and finally understand that one cannot look at jewry as a monolithic instituition. In Europe and North America the fact that the atheist jews were the communists , results in some people generalising and some end up developing an antisemitic feeling. Your lecture is very good to show the diferent variants in jewish politics and it helps one not to pre-judge nor raise any misconceptions. Thank you very much for the lesson. God bless you! Shalom!
Henry, thanks for mentioning Vladimir Jabotinsky. Certainly one of the most important zionists from the Russian Empire who in my opinion had a very modern political vision. I recently read his book "The Five", which I greatly enjoyed. I'd appreciate a video about him by you. As an expert in Ukranian Jewish history it would be great to hear your take on him and his legacy.
Well, I was suggesting a video about Jabotinsky just to find our that you've given an amazing lecture about him a few years ago. Henry, thank you very much for being a champion of our history!
A quick correction: the Bund was created in the Polish town, Vilnius, which at the time was under Russian control - this was due to Poland being partitioned by Russia, Prussia and Austria. Vilnius became a Polish city again after Poland regained its independence. The city was lost to the Soviet Union after W2.
An excellent video again! Bravo Mr. Abramson! Are there not maybe two green lines missing on your chart perhaps on the left-hand side (just an observation)? Your pronunciation of the German word Rechtsstaat needs to be practiced a bit more (just kidding, but it would not hurt). As a German, I only recognized it from what followed. I was truly stunned to see how many pogroms were committed when you presented the geographic map with all those green dots. I had no idea it was so dense and widespread.
My grandparents came to America from Mother Russia in 1893, because it was a Land of Opportunity. I'm glad there is an Israel even though some hostile people call it jewland.
@@bingeltube My comment, Mr. Bingel, was related to Dr. Abramson's lecture on Modern Jewish Politics. I simply spoke from the heart about my grandparents coming from Russia to America & how glad I was that Israel became a political reality in 1948.
Hi, Thank you for this lesson. I would like to listen to a lesson about the events that caused the decline of the Poalei Zion, to the rise of the right wing politicians and the religious groups. It is so strange ,to me, that the parties that created Israel have almost disappeared to the point that their major contribution to the establishment of the estate is been almost forgotten.
The original founders and their ideology died out. Communism is dead except for in college elites, and that generation of thinkers has vanished. the country shifted to the right after the second intifada, and as a result of the Jews from Arab countries migrating.
@@philipmann5317 That is a simplistic answer. The founder of Israel were not communists. They were social democrats really. A philosophy that has not died and in reality it is even so slowly entering the bastion of pure market economy, the USA.
What happened to Israeli Labor was that their plan to turn 1 million Mizrakhim into Ashkenazim did not work. At the same time, they presided over decades of inflation and the death of the kibbutz movement, their ideological backbone. But a similar though not exactly the same thing happened to Israeli Labor that happened to traditional Labor in the UK and the Democratic Party in the US - they turned into "New Labor" and "Third-Way Democrats." The left has replaced issues of class with issues of race. Just think - Ehud Barak, who grew up with the Labor ethos etc. has an apartment in the most expensive and desirable apt tower in Israel. Meanwhile, after the second intifadah, they haven't come up with anything other than "continue negotiating" with PLO towards two states.
@@lilianawolosin109 eh, the bolsheviks were also "social democrats" The israeli communist party signed the declaration of independance. and it was in many ways a one-party system for the first decades. you couldnt get national health insurance unless you were a member of labour. the right wing didnt get power until Begin (who had a riot storm the Knesset like trump did)

Dr Abramson, Unless you have covered the subject, could you say more about American reformed Judaism, and how it tried to solve the problem by denying that Jews were a people ? I have a personal interest in this. I only realized, many years later, that my own grandparents were rather typical German antisemites, except, they were American born Jews, raised in the reformed Temple. Back in the 70's, Eugene Borowitz told me that universalistic, antiZionist reformed Judaism was obsolete. This is not true. Forty years later Jewish self-hatred that underlies organized reformed Judaism has evolved in new and creative ways. The new style is left-wing, pro-Palestinian, sexually disordered, embracing every current stupidity of the cultural and political left; the old "traditional" reformed style was right-wing, patriotic, family oriented and consciously Ango-saxon in manners. The subject of 19th century (German) American Judaism, and Jewishness, seems germane. Thank you.
