  • The 2024 Thoresby Park classic car show, outside the magnificent Thoresby Hall, was my first visit to this scenic venue and car event. The hope was to see a pool of vintage, classic and retro cars that don't tend to appear at the shows we go to, and that proved to be the case with just a few familiar vehicular "faces" turning up.
    The run over to Thoresby Park took a couple of hours or so in the MX-5, the sun was shining and a good day's viewing was predicted. The 2024 Thoresby Park classic car show was a two-day gathering, I attended on day one only. As always, I tried to include a broad mix of the cars that went along, with the main focus being on the older cars given that this is a classic car channel mostly. I was surprised how many classic cars for sale there were too.
    Highlights included a rare Auto Union/DKW F102, Ford Zephyr Zodiac Mk1, Lancia Beta Montecarlo, a pair of Ford Prefect E493As, an early SAAB 900 turbo, Mitsubishi Starion, Chevy BelAir station wagon, Austin A50 Cambridge, Morris Marina Pickup, Toyota Cressida (a model I've not seen for donkeys of years), a very original Triumph Herald 12/50, Renault 16, and perhaps my favourite of the lot, a rare 1950s Morris Oxford Traveller. It was fun to chat with a few followers of the Old Classic Car channel, not something I was expecting given that I was not on my usual patch.
    Your comments, likes and subs welcomed as always.
    As this was my first visit to the Thoresby Park classic car show I wanted to cram in as much as possible, I hadn't planned for the video to be quite this long so my apologies for taking up a chunk of your evening(s). Hopefully it gives an idea of what a typical classic car show in the UK is like to viewers elsewhere.

    The Riley RM brings back memories. In 1967 a mate of mine turned 17 and got one as his first car. He'd paid a tenner for it off some local older blokes and invited me over for a look at it. When I got to his place I it was sitting in the middle of the road after the engine had conked out. So me and another couple of lads tried pushing it out of the way but when we pushed it strange tearing noises came from the back of the roof which then tore away causing the roof to collapse. We were in tears of laughter at the sight of this rotten wreck but felt sorry for our mate who had been ripped off. His Dad got the tenner back though after suggesting that a refund was better than a broken nose!

    In the 1950s one of those Oxford estates in green used to deliver the newspapers along the Warren between Talacre and Gronant, it became my favourite car along with the Ford Pilot. As for a classic to use and tour, for me it has to be the MGB GT and Speke is not on the Wirral, it is part of Liverpool. I served my time at Voss Motors at Liverpool and I often worked on a Sunbeam Tiger , belonging to Mersey Docks and Harbour boss Mr Leggett and the reg was LEG 8. Great vid, many thanks.

    Hi 👋 Brilliant car show , such a good turn out of cars for it. I liked the beautiful surrounds too. You recorded it well by positioning yourself in different spots. The little Daf stood out because there wouldn't be many around today. I have only ever seen one here in New Zealand, and that was back in the 1970s. They were all automatic cars. The Ford Sierra is getting rare now, I remember lots on the road in the late 1980s/ early 90s. The Triumph Stags look so good , my older brother had a friend who bought a brand new one in 1976. It was white . It was nice to ride in too, very smooth. Thanks from Carl.

    The two-tone green Morris Oxford estate and two-tone grey Rover P4 were the stars of the show for me. Hi Richard. As you say, it's always fun going outside your normal visits . Too many too mention but that Mitsubishi GTO is a 3litre V6 twin turbo 4WD rocket ship ! Drove the original demonstrator from Cirecester to Torquay .....what a hoot ! 34 years ago !!! Are you certain that was a 2002 tii ? The wheels and grille indicated it to be a base model 1501 . And finally you're spot on with the fragility of the 1100 /1300 's . They disolved faster than Alka Seltzer in a glass of water 🤣 Thanks Richard .

    Rick that 39 V8 is a Deluxe model and before you pointed out it came in from NZ I thought it must not be from your home market as I noticed it had no marker lamps on the guards or wings as you call them. The engine in that is basically the same as your Pilot It will be a 221ci 85bhp engine like yours but will have the upgrade to 24 stud heads that came out in late 1938 USA rather than the 21 stud head which was up to 37 in the USA ( but was used Post War for Ford UK and produced in Dagenham with firing order on the heads).

    Apparently there are about 10 Cressidas left in the UK. I had an estate for a year in the early 90s which was a cheap one-year only car going very rusty, but it had a replacement used Japanese MOT failure engine, which made it mechanically reliable. They were already rare then.

    Of course I’ve always just really liked the Cortina MK2 design [ even when they were sold in North America].
    The Renault 16 - you are right , just a very cool design.

    Another great video as usual, but surprisingly there were a couple of cars you missed. The first was a green roadster that I saw in the beginning from the back and at first glance thought was an MGTD until I saw the rounded radiator shell and said, "Ah, I think that's a Singer. Well, he'll see it later." It was in the near background at about 2:05:52, when you were looking at another car in great detail. The second was a blue roadster with a trailer near the end at 2:19:56, in the background as other cars were passing in front of it. Like you, I am much more interested in the older cars, and especially in their unique engine designs and layouts. Is the engine in the DKW/Auto Union basically the same as in the 3-cylinder early SAABs?

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  Місяць тому

      Hi yes there were a few arrivals that, for whatever reason, I didn't stumble across during the walk around despite being on my feet from early doors, through to about 3pm. Cars often head off around lunchtime which makes covering some events in detail very tricky. I sometimes think that many people are used to breakfast/car&coffee type meetings, that staying the full day at a regular show isn't something they'd now do. Maybe?

    The blue mid-1960's Valiant looks to have been "customized" by at least chopping off the roof and fitting a tent-like canvas hood over the opening and deleting the stock tail lights. Oh well, it's at least running. I'm not a particularly enthusiastic Rolls-Royce fan, but that old spotless saloon bodied one I would gladly ride in. Lots of cars not seen before in this show.
