  • I timed a local chainsaw Carver in Rainier Oregon to see how fast he could carve out a bear. He is fast! We only show a little of the actual carving, but you can watch the sanding and burning of the bear. He does great work - you can see some of his stuff at www.knotjustabear.com or read more about this and other items at
New - how-to tutorial on carving this bear yourself! See our video page at: www.knotjustabear.com/video.html

Talk about skill! A few minutes out of his day & $150-$200 piece of artwork cranked out!

this is a skill that isn't self taught I think people like this are born with it, I can go to a art chainsaw school all week and never come up with anything like this, bravo. And just think he can do this til he dies, guaranteed income

Haha, nice! What size bar & type of chain do you use on sculptures like this? Pretty awesome that you were able to take what was just a hobby & turn it into your occupation. Livin right!

Hello master. Is there any way to prevent spliting and big cracks on the logs? Because i know that the center(heart) of the log makes this to happend. Please give me an advice or any idea?
    Thank you

      moldcatalin master of none.
we usually carve a relief cut down the back (or in an obscure place) into the carving along the length of the bear. depending on the diameter of the log, the depth is usually 2-3" deep. no need to go to the heart of the log. also, be sure to oil and give a protective cover (polyurethane, etc) and the cracking / splitting will not be a problem.
