You're not alone my man
I got the app and am on the last stage. It’s improvising over a scale. And I’m not making it work.
I go through a slump every so often, the last one was triggered when Peter Green died. Listening to a great guitarist always reminds me how far I have to go... but then I dig into a completely different type of playing and it gets me going again. I the recent case Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols cheered me up no end.
I've had acoustic guitars for over 20 years and still can't play for shit. It's now just furniture in the corner.

I got a bit burnt out doing the lessons and practices all the time. So for the past few weeks, to switch it up, I have just been learning some different songs or riffs, and not worrying about trying to progress through the actual lessons. It’s actually a very interesting change up, as I have been having fun, learning bits of songs I like, and trying out some other advanced techniques that come up from time to time in those songs. Then when I go back to the lesson, what was hard all of a sudden is just easy - because I had picked it up during one of the songs. Or conversely, where I might have struggled messing around with the songs, going back to the lesson I pick up on something useful that helps me with that. Bottom line, there is no straight path to enlightenment. Mess around, switch it up, and most importantly- have fun!!!

FINALLY someone has exactly what I need. I am a drummer ,keyboardist first and when I play my electric with distortion I find it very hard to control and make it sound clean. YOU da man mate so glad I subbed cheers Justin!

Man i just gotta thank you real quick, i've been playing for like 6 months now and recently started using your website and even tho i know a lot of what you said in these earlier lessons, there are so many of these tips you give that help me improve so much. This thing about moving my strumming hand up and down to affect the muting was one of them where i had been a bit frustrated for not being able to make the chord ring out just right and it instantly helped me so much. I think that the pick plays a super important role in this technique. If I use a medium or a really thick pick I find it very easy but with a thin pick there's no way I can keep the tempo properly.

I practiced while sitting for years and now I started to play during standing up with the guitar pretty low. I watched your basket case lesson and realized I really suck when it comes to palm muting. I don't even reach my palm when I stretch my arm. My palm muting is more like pinky muting. But Billie Joe Armstrong is wearing his guitar even lower than me and I really wonder how he manage to palm mute proberly

Great lesson as always Justin...I do ok with palm muting but I think I am making it harder on myself. It seems that when I do get it right it is often too tense of feels like I am having to try too hard whereas in your demonstration it should feel relatively easy and relaxed. Had never seen it tried by coming in at an angle with that bounce that you showed, will have to give that a shot. Cheers!
Being relaxed is one of the most important things when playing the guitar. If you have good technique then you need very little force when playing. It's quite a good way of learning a new technique... by seeing how little force you can get away with while still implementing the desired technique. Also, with palm muting, your hand will change angle if you're sitting or standing. Try both and see what is easiest, then once you have that down try the other way. It'll give you a better understand of where ur hand is suppose to be to get the required sound. Hope this helps 👍. Have fun and go learn Basket Case by Green Day 😋

Great video. How about a lesson on gallop strumming?
What is gallop strumming? Is this rhythmic strumming to give the rhythm of a horse in full gallop? Mongolian music uses this technique in it's traditional genre to give the feeling of riding a horse in full gallop. It is played on a two string instrument called a Moron Huur.

You know what is a good song for this? "I can't be the only one" by Killswitch Engaged. It helps with alternate picking and lifting off with the palm mute.

@@spudvader when playing it in E standard I palm mute the 2 bars of E5 to thicken it up. I was more referring to the pumping 8th notes side of things

Hi justin love your videos, i was traning the palm muting and works great on the thickest strings but i can't manage on the three finest strings because of the volume knob is in the way on a strat. I can't get my hand back enough. Any advice thanks
Try only down picking. It helps to not raise your palm on the lower strings.

nobody talks about the left hand (fretting hand), that also participates in the palm-muting sound.
Is this practical with a whammy bar if you're not an advanced guitarist? When I've tried this in the past, my palm muting tends to move the bridge and affects the pitch.
Sounds like you need to relax. Dont put so much pressure on the bridge, unless you've got chunky hands, you may need to move your hand a little more forward (towards the neck)
It's been about 6 months now since I started to play the guitar a I've still only learnt one thing I suck.. I think some people just don't have it and I'm one of them 😭.. Good luck to everyone on you're journey 🎸🎶

Have you been to Justin's website? Speaking as someone who's going back to the basics after 15 years of being an on and off player I can say that it's really really top notch. Try a few lessons. Go back to the start and build up slowly.

But have been playing for a year. I suck as well. But following Justin’s website I have learned so much. Now I can suck at doing loads of things! I’m a bit stuck right now. But it seems to be the way learning goes. I’ll keep trying and eventually I’ll wrap my head around it and move on to sucking at something else. I think it’s great fun. But no one else in the house does.

It looks like you are only playing the lower (top) 4 stings and muting the high e with your pinkie - is this correct?
Usually guitarist anchor their pinky to the guitar, not muting.
Helps if you got a decent voice too.

What's the difference between chugging and djent?
More gain and palm muting further away from the bridge.

JustinGuitar - Listen to Meshuggah or Periphery. It’s a more percussive and aggressive version of chugging but in a lower tuning. You’ll get it. It’s the opposite of your blues style basically lol.
Djent is a style of music, chugging is a technique 👍
Interesting note, Brian May uses the King's pre decimal coins for a pick, he claims they don't get stuck for him because they're round.

I find it very odd that palm muting is something that's taught... I'm pretty sure I figured it out myself by just playing around with strumming...

I didn't mean it in a self congratulatory way. I'm a mediocre player at best and mostly self taught (had one month of group lessons over summer when I was 15), so it just never occurred to me that this was something that anyone would need to be taught - it was just something that came naturally and I always assumed it was the same with everyone who was already strumming chords.
I can totally relate with the palm muting. Messed around and just 'got it'. Had my mind blown when i discovered people wrapped their thumb to play the low string and never thought to do that but it comes naturally to some.
