    People find it so daunting to learn something by ear because there's this misconception that you're meant to just listen to the song, start it and just play it through. A lot of learning pieces by ear involves trial and error and cutting the piece up into manageable pieces. It's okay to land on notes that are entirely wrong. And this lesson showed it all. Hopefully a lot of guitar players will use this to turn a somewhat daunting task into something incredibly fun and rewarding to do

      I'm really wanting to get into learning by ear. Ive only learned one riff by tom petty by ear and thats it. but as soon as I heard it in the song I knew exactly how to play it. mainly cause it was just power chords for the most part. but still it is very satisfying to learn by ear.

    Best tip for learning something by ear is to be able to sing what you want to learn. If you can sing it, that means you know the notes and its easier to put it on your instrument.

      Yes, but what aboiut chords? you can´t sing chords. I can´t get basic chord progessions easily but when it´s some harder chord it´s harder, sometimes I just can´t figure it out.

    When I was a kid learning guitar, we had tapes. It was a play, stop-superfast, rewind a short bit...rinse, repeat. Note for note, for hours. I ruined hundreds of tapes, but it was all we had. CDs were actually harder learn this way.

    Another great way to make sure you're playing it correctly, is to watch a few live videos of the original artist performing them. Just to fine tune your fingering and what not...

    • @d9or7n
      @d9or7n 6 років тому +2

      VHDT10 It's not always the case. Trying to learn the song by watching youtube live videos of the artist can SOMETIMES lead you to error. That is because artists when playing live tend to SOMETIMES imrovise or play diferenly the song.

    • @VHDT10
      @VHDT10 6 років тому +1

      Dorin Busu of course, I'm talking more about fine tuning a part that was challenging for you to figure out perfectly. A lot of times, figuring things out, solely by ear, you may come up with your own fingerings, that weren't meant for the correct feel of the song. I'm talking nit picking

    Thanks for this, it's nice to see someone actually going through the process instead of simply saying how it's done. Now I feel like I could learn anything if I just put the time in like I used to.
    Here's some free advice for newer players. When you get older, don't ever let your skills stagnate, it takes way too much work and time to get them back after not pushing. Also, always challenge yourself.

    If you're using youtube as a way to play your song, you can slow the passage down 75%, and 50% by clicking the gear in the lower R hand corner of the youtube image (it's the second of four, and might have HD pasted over it. The key stays the same (unlike listening to LP records, where bringing the speed down from 33 1/3 to 16 rpm would lower the key 1/2 step).

I also want to learn David Lee Roth's Showtime and A LIttle Ain't Enough! Great show songs!

    Man I remember two years ago when I first started playing guitar, I would use tabs but my ear was so unskilled that I wouldn't notice if I were a half-step off. Now, I know two Buckethead albums (pikes) that I've learned by ear (cause I had to, there aren't many tabs for his pikes) Best thing I ever did. Now, for any tune it only takes me a few seconds to work it out on guitar.
    It's also extremely useful when you have a tune in your head and you'd like to hear it on guitar.. Or when playing along with other musicians.

    *** Anytime you start transcribing, first find the tuning...... find the tuning is it standard, 1/2 step down, drop D, Open G etc...... 440, 442, 444, 430 etc .....
    Listen for open sounding strings etc...
    Find sustained non-vibrato notes to fine tune your pitch to its Cents 440, 444, etc.... :0)
    These can help your transcription or even learning a song to a recording with sheet music immensely..... ;0)

      Steve Rai malmsteen songs are a lot easier then Gilbert songs. Yngwie uses simple patterns without variation that are fairly linear. Paul also uses a lot of patterns but only a few are linear.

    So, Be Relaxed and Ready to Play.....Develop Relative Pitch.... Know your Scales/Modes.... and Know the song in & out by heart..... Oh, and I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a 4-year degree in Guitar Performance from Berkely School of Music!! That last one is not a big deal, probably not even helpful.

      Lol...jk....Sorry, bud. You do a lot to teach people and I respect that...couldn't help myself. I don't think the Novices will pick it up so adeptly and be nearly as non-chalant about it as you.....In fact, they will likely be very Very Chalant

    As a kid I used to learn songs by ear, from cassette tapes. I learned one thing - make a copy of the original tape and learn from the copy, because the tape will get thinner and effed up :)
    *Question for millenials* !!!
    - Your guitar needs to be tuned, but you have no smartphone, computer, any other instrument in tunem etc. Only the basic stuff you would have in the 80s. How do you tune your guitar (or any other instrument)?
