I went through a dark period of my life experiencing black magic. I had iman and accepted it but when i actually had it happen, that opened my eyes it was crazy and brought me closer to Allah.
recite the last 2 verses of surah baqarah every night before u sleep, it protects u from black magic
Also the Ayatul Qursi. It helps me sleep better.

I also used to thought If i don't care about these things then it won't harm me but now i know there is only one prevention and that is remembrance of Allah
We only believe in Allah and nothing else is worthy of believe or has any power over us whether in harming us or protecting us through believe or calling upon them.
There is evil in the world which can try to harm us but only through the permission of Allah and only Allah can protect us from it.

Don't follow sects, If you are a new Muslim, your first source should be the Quran. Since you don't know Arabic, it would be better if you read it with its tafsir. Then hadiths and the sunnahs of Hazrad Muhammad come. Allah Almighty clearly forbids us from dividing into sects in the Qur'an. However, the ummah is divided into sections, both political and economic. However, this is one of the situations that our prophet predicted would happen near the end of time. He said that the ummah would be divided into 73 sections and only one of them would go to heaven.
