My review of the lovely Hornby Princess Coronation Class locomotives. Thanks for watching! Email: samstrains@outlook.com Facebook: samstrains Twitter: samstrains
Sam, the slope on smoke box top was made that way to accommodate the streamlined casing. Later after casing was removed, at major overhauls many were refitted with a conventional smoke box. Ha ha, a shout out would be fun.
Hi Sam, maybe it's already been said, I only scrolled back a bit. I think the gold box on the top of the frames is to do with oil lubrication. That slow speed control is remarkable. I take it the latest model has been done in cast gold? Bob.
Hi Robert, thanks for the comment - I think you might be right on that, I think people have pointed that out on other engines I've reviewed in the past! For almost £200 - it'd better be cast gold, live steam, with full digital sound! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice video Sam I liked the realisticNess of the duchess of Rutland plus I liked the way you filmed the pullman train slowly departing from the front amazing nice one
Ooh, that's quite a hard one! I think the odd one out is the single-wheeler next to the country station but I'm not really sure. I'm probably wrong. Cheers, Luca
The unstreamlined Coronation class is like a mix between the Schools Class and the Merchant Navy Class almost. But I perfer the streamlined version of the Coronation class. IT LOOKS AMAZING!
City of Nottingham was my first Hornby locomotive that still holds a special place in my heart, I still have it as part of the 1991 Night Mail Express trainset that also included elevated track supports as well as the operating mail coach, wonderful set even if she is tender driven. (quite tempting to get a Railroad version to swap the chassis over for loco drive to be honest)
Just picked this video up. The slope was a left over from streamlining. After the streamline casing was removed the smokebox was left slightly tapered.
Received the lovely ‘Sir William Stanier’ from the new Princess Coronations and its easily my best model yet, plan on buying the BR blue one coming out in December as well. Thanks for the video Sam!
There were great moments at Carlisle back in the early '60s when the locomotive versions of two great engineers met: Stanier and No7 - Sir Nigel Gresley. Very sad that the former didn't survive into preservation.
Must get one to see how it compares with my tender drive version. I must say I prefer the older moving pony truck rather than the new fixed flangeless type. The older ones are also more tolerant of sharp radius points.
Thanks Gareth! Yeah absolutely - I thought the idea of making a new version was to make it more realistic... well that isn't what they've done with that pony truck ;D Thanks for the comment, Sam :)
Thanks for all your help Sam thanks to you and a couple others I’ve been able to develop a decent United Kingdom collection of engines and locomotives your reviews really are helpful and saw your maintenance tips I really really appreciate it I have a relatively large American lay out that dates back almost 60 years my father started it but now have to build a small diorama for my UK stuff I have a 9FPrincess Elizabeth the Berkeley a couple of black fives and inner-city 125 an inner-city 225 and a virgin voyager thanks for all of your help
A couple of corkers there Sam Spot on with the slope on the smoke box. It is a throw back to the days of streamlining, the slope was so the smoke box would fit under the casing at the front end. When the streamlining was removed in the late 1940's the smoke boxes were originally left as fitted with the sloping top, but as they passed through Crewe works in the 1950's for their regular heavy overhauls the sloping boxes were replaced with with the more conventional flat topped boxes. I think the last sloping box loco was 46246 City of Manchester which didnt get its normal smoke box til March 1960. Then when 46229 Duchess of Hamilton was re-streamlined by the NRM in 2008-2009 she has a new sloping smoke built for her, so there is a sloped boxed Dutchess around, but the box is hidden by the casing. As for single chimneys, the first 14 all had single chimneys when first built, but 6234 Duchess of Abercorn was built with a double one in 1939, and it showed better performance than the first built batch, so all later ones were built with doubles and the first 14 converted to doubles between 1939 and 1944. Favourite? can't choose, the BR Crimson with weathering looks magnificent, but there is something very characterful about Rutlands sloping smoke box, so honours even on that front. Odd one out? Did I see a B1 interloper from the Eastern region parked up by the turntable? Have a great w/e, Jon
Thanks so much Jon! Ahh good to hear I guessed right, hehe! Right - so did Hornby make the single chimney version in this era then? I'd suppose they must have! Yes the B1 was the odd one out, well spotted! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice! The duchesses are nice locos. The new tooling by Hornby seems to sort out a few of the issues there were with the old tooling - for example that gaping gap between the body and the trailing truck axle. The cheapest I've found it for is £150 which seems to me a decent price for a new tooling, large express loco. However I do admit I would be more likely to buy the older one, seeing as it's probably going to see a large price reduction now the new one is out.
Thanks Lukas! Yeah I noticed that... but in doing so they've made the model very unrealistic - those trucks were supposed to be articulated, not fixed! Hmm yeah £150 is okay, but I believe the bodywork is still plastic, so I'm still struggling to see how that could be justified! Thanks for watching mate, Sam :)
Hey sam just a quick quedtion i have bought a coronation today its an older model and is in good condition the only probkem with is flange on the back left wheel and the linkage on the forward and back a bit loose how would uou repair this? P.s the reffrence number is R.066
Hey Daniel, thanks a lot for the comment - that can sometimes happen - what I do is apply a small amount of superglue to the wheel, and force the metal tyre back on - just be very careful not to let the glue spread beyond the inner wheel! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have the Princess Elizabeth in BR Green from the same era of manufacture, and find it so good I have bought two more Princess Royals from the same era. The rear trucks also rotate, but seem to have a smaller gap with the body than the Coronations. I find the detailing on these perfectly adequate, and the motor one of the best. I also have the later Hornby 'City of Liverpool' which also satisfies my wants. I'm not sure that I will succumb to any of the new models, gorgeous as they are. My two 'new' Princesses (R3015 Princess Royal Class BR 4-6-2 Princess Arthur Of Connaught 46207 and R2448 'LADY PATRICIA' BR BLUE WEATHERED 4-6-2 LOCO 46210) are as new and cost me a total of £195. I got tempted to buy these after revisiting an old video by Intercity1980. I do miss his reviews, and wish he would return. ps. please change those awful vacuum pipes.
Thanks for the comment William, Ahh of course - yes those princesses are just as good! I think that's the problem - the detail on these was already adequate (save maybe the cab detail and cylinder cocks etc), and the performance just can't be beaten! I would absolutely love to buy the new one too, because they are superb, but it seems clear that my money can be much better spent elswhere! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love the way you said the new one out soon and it will be better ....? Just hope the new one don't have dodgy motors and trim falling off that seem to be Hornby way at the moment
haha yeah - I'd filmed this before it was released! Absolutely - it better run like the real thing for almost £200 - sadly I can't justify that price though, so I won't find out ;D Cheers, Sam :)
I believe the smoke box sloped down to accommodate the streamlining!! Once it was removed I can imagine that it was left for a while and then changed :)
Great review Sam :) all things considered they seem amazing! And I think you are right it is "bull" about the new ones! The detail really isn't bad and from the look of things it wouldn't be hard to paint up the cab, buy some spare cylinder cocks and fit those. The weathering seems fairly nice too and the running is dead silent and smooth which is always a bonus - all the best mate :)
haha thanks mate - glad you agreed with that! Absolutely, a little time and skill could save you £120! I couldn't believe how well these ran! :3 Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam your right about the smoke box on Rutland it was built as a streamlined type loco. It had its streamlining removed in the war. I bought my four duchess/ coronations in 2001 I payed £89 each. Hornby are having a laugh at the price of the new one.
Nice locomotives Sam, a mate of mine bought the City of Nottingham new when it was released, to my knowledge it has never been run. The last loco I bought was a duchess , not Hornby . Might not ever buy a new release Hornby again, you would think a new loco would run straight from the box, by the way that Duchess I bought was a Wrenn. Regards John from OZ.
Thanks a lot John - ooh good choice with the Wrenn, you won't beat that for reliability! The new Hornby release does look fab - but I just can't believe the price! Cheers, Sam :)
Is there any chance you're going to do a Coronation class review, but the new Hornby 2017 tooling? I'd love to know your opinion on it, comparing it to the old tooling its just replaced, such as your Duchess of Rutland for example. I have a BR blue Duchess of Gloucester and Hornby have just revealed they are making it again in the exact same form, but just in the new tooling. I just wondered if the new tooling is worth buying or if they are exactly the same and don't warrant a higher price tag. £200 is appallingly expensive. I enjoy your reviews greatly, to the point that your review persuaded me to purchase one of Hatton's Andrew Barclay industrial tanks. (Which I adore!) Keep up the great work! 😊
Hey! Yeah I would like to pick one up - if the prices go down, I may well do! I decided they couldn't possibly warrant the price tag - but I couldn't justify buying one in the first place :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I agree with your comment about the Blue "Duchess of Gloucester", just missed out on one for £65 on eBay, but would definitely not buy one that looks pretty much the same but is marked up at an extra £135+. I have 4 Duchess's, one a rare R1004 "City of Bradford" with the black wheels and motion.
They both look good to me, but I have to say I prefer Duchess of Rutland, it think it is because of the interesting vacuum pipes and the name. Nearly £200 for the new version is a shocker! I paid that for a Bachmann DCC sound locomotive (Class 37 and I am very pleased with it).
Thanks Ian - yes actually that BR green is a very smart livery, and I like those pipes too! I know - I can't believe it either - hopefully people will vote with their wallets! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The sloping boiler is a sign she used to be streamlined. When de streamlined she retained the original boiler until reboilering . So it’s quite right to have an early green livery on it. It would have been equally accurate in blue.
7:16 I guess the sloping front was to fit the streamling it wore as well! I think I prefer the 46251 over the green one, but i like 46228's sloping smokebox!
I have just got one of the new duchess and there good but not worth paying the full price for. I paid £155 There's not that much difference to the older models . I've found the new duchess a bit noisy when running and not as smooth and some locomotives Looks like you got two good locos there
Hi Oliver, Thanks very much for feeding back on that - you think the same as I do - they are a clear improvement, but definitely not worth the money! That's interesting about the performance too - not that great to her! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Have you ever done any artificial weathering, or do you know of a tutorial I could use? I have an old HO Rivarossi UP Big Boy #4005 and it's a bit imperfect (missing pilot deck handrails, dimming light bulb, that's about it), but once I get her back in shape I'd love to add some weathering to her. It's at least 40 years old, as the smokebox is flat black like the rest of the engine, the newer ones are silver-colored (or steel, again I am new to this). She still runs great, but I think I'd keep her as primarily a decoration for the layout I plan on building with my dad. Maybe I'll get an MTH #4014 to run alongside her, as that's the one that currently being restored.
maybe the new coronation is brass that would account for the price. also in the last review you asked about a 1p, well the alx terrier was classed 0P, ether it was weak or overpowered
It's possible, and that would be some justification - but I'm told that they are in fact plastic, which is dreadful. I could be wrong though, because I've not seen one myself! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam liked the review on the City of Nottingham nice seeing it on your layout. I was looking at the Wrenn one on ebay it was in the BR Black with red lining so tempted to buy it the price held me back at £750 ;( Hope you right about the New Hornby one do hope it will be die cast then I may get one. Must admit the Wrenn one was a rare model.!! Also just seen a Hornby dublo 3 rail model in black. Would also like to point out the earlier Hornby City of Nottingham which is tender driven the linkage on that model looks so much stronger less likely to jam up.
Thanks Michael! Blimey - yeah that's a lot even for a Wrenn one! They are great - but not worth £750 in any livery - they're all just as nice really! That's definitely true though - the old versions were much more sturdy! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, I prefer the City of Nottingham, just something about a maroon & gold livery. I agree with you about the costs/RRP of the upcoming model update by Hornby, probably not realistic when compared to other recent models.
Sam this may be a old vid but a new comment I wanted to tell when they de streamlined it had the sloping smoke box because the streamlining was curved at the front as u know and de streamlined versions were under it so for the curve they had to slop it a little
Hello mate, just wanted to say that you did a great job with this new video, like always, and that Prince Coronation Class Hornby locomotive looks spectacular :D Noah: )
Very nice Sam, it’s been awhile since I saw one of your videos and had forgotten how good they are. I have decided not to renew my Hornby Member Club subscription, they are pricing themselves too high. Even with my club discount I can get items cheaper from Hatton and Rails of Sheffield’s, or even ebay. Their Visitors Centre, just around the corner from me, is even more expensive. Cannot remember when I last purchased anything from them…Simon
Thanks so much Simon - lovely to hear from you too, how have you been? Ahh yeah that's a good point - they're so high with their pricing, it renders the club useless, lol! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Have you tried inserting the locos and tenders with a plastic bag in place so you can just lift the plastic to get them out. Roco/Fleischmann do this and it saves breaking things!
Hey Daniel - it could be a number of things, most common are split gears, bad quartering, jammed rods or an axle failure of some kind - is one of your engines in trouble?? :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains no its just the wheels keep locking ive loosend then tightent the screws on the centre wheel for the gear and oild the the axels just now and i hope the solves it.Plus the guy i bought it fron did say that the previous owner past away and his engines hsdnt been used in about a decade so is probably just needs yo strech its legs again
but you said they said he use to run it all the time.maybe he didn't have what he needed to fix it in his old age but if he ran it alot that shows he loved his model train none the less and now it has moved on to be loved by a new generation of man kind to enjoy just as much as that old man did as well
It's been answered but the Coronation locos that had the sloped firebox at the top would have been streamlined locomotives originally. When the streamlining casing was removed, the slope was quite obvious. Also, an originally streamlined locos had a distinctive difference in the running board under the boiler though above the wheels towards the front bogie. The streamlined locos would have a clear break in the boiler running plate and that over the front bogie, a very clear 'step' in the running board. The easiest way to distinguish is to check a non-streamlined loco where the running board was one complete entity but sloped in a curve to the horizontal over the front buffers. The curved running board shows that it was never streamlined. That 'curve' is missing on the locos that were originally streamlined: the running boards were two horizontals. In fact it's very apparent in your two locomotives. However, as the locos aged and were repaired/maintained, the sloping firebox was replaced with a normal firebox.
Thanks very much - yes I had guessed that this was the case! It's quite nice that Hornby picked up on this and represented it with their models - they obviously did their research! Thanks again for all the info, Cheers, Sam :)
Have you ever done a review of the Lady Godiva? And Idk, for some reason I REALLY don't like weathering on a locomotive. I really love seeing what a locomotive looks like when it was brand new. Some like it, I don't really. Even if they were really that dirty irl. An example I like to use are the 8500 Gas Turbines. FILTHY things irl, but I never like seeing them dirty in model form. Other than that, streamlined or unstreamlined the Coronation is such a lovely looking locomotive.
No not yet! But I will if people want me to! haha that's fair enough - quite a few have said that, and I prefer them pristine too :3 Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Once again, this is a beautiful model Sam! I wanted to tell you my latest research discovery! An attempt was made to preserve a 4th example but sadly it failed! :( That example was No. 46243 City of Lancaster! Still, its good to have 3 preserved examples!
Well done on the live program. Did you get my question, would be good to watch. “Are you intending to do the BRM cake box challenge ? “ keep up the good work. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks so much! Unfortunately I don't have access to the chat after the stream ends - so I only see the ones I happen to notice! That does sound awesome - but I'm not much of a modeller ;D Thanks again, Sam :)
I couldn't choose which one I'd rather buy in the poll. Because I'm on a budget, I'd choose whichever was cheapest if I found them. Weathered or unweathered doesn't bother me, if it looks nice, I'll buy it
I don't think I ever gonna buy a factory weathered loco. The dirt (spread) is not realistic, they often only use one color (the mud-ish brown), and on a working loco there are specific parts that regularly cleaned (windows, the rods...), and parts that hardly gets dirty at all (buffers use to be greasy, not dusty...). But sometines I do buy pro-weathered trains, or I do it my self.
In Central Europe that price (190 GBP) is average for a new tender loco, most mid-range models like Roco, and Fleischmann steamers goes for that. The most expensive train I ever brought was a train set, for 375 euro (335 GBP), and for a single loco 230 euro (205 GBP), with pre-order (that's almost 20% off).
Can you help pick me up off the floor? I must have misheard and read that. Nearly 200 for a loco? That is ridiculous, I don’t get how they can charge that, is it all hand made and painted? Bachman locos in my opinion are better detailed and more accurate (suppose its down to them being HO.) Your locos are beautiful and were actually priced at a sane amount. Nice buy. Sorry to hear about the old owner passing. Here is a bit of a weird question, got given half a dozen trains, one is missing a tender (hope to find one on eBay.) And I have a tender and no engine, and I have no idea what engine it belongs to it’s in BR green. I don’t suppose there is anyway to find out what engine it came from ? Sorry for the weird question, Thanks, Kyle.
haha! Thanks for the comment, Nope, they're not hand made - everything is done with machines and then they're assembled. It looks to me like the bodywork is done in plastic too, which is a shame given the price! Hmmm, not really, though if you send me a photo of it, I could probably tell you! Cheers, Sam :)
Everything is hand assembled but it still needs skill to produce the moulds and fixtures needed to make and assemble the models. Production costs are going up so mods wont get cheaper. Bachmann models are 00 as well like hornby models and are in a similar price bracket to Hornby
I’m sure that the previous owner of the Dutches of Rutland Would be happy to know that the model has gone to someone who is going to love and look after it
Puh, Over here a little Diesel shunter cost's over 200 Euro And a Steam Locomotive with tender up to 500 Euro, absolutly stupid. They dont even look like if they have a Lot of Detail. That's why I use Thomas and Friends Toy's like Wooden Railway.
Blimey! That is ridiculous - especially when you imagine the things you can buy with that kind of money... tablets, TVs, even a PC! I just don't believe that prices like that are necessary or justified! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Hey Sam! I was curious if you could do a running session? A Green Running Session? (Like the Red Running Session you did?) THANK YOU MUCH!!!!
Especially the pricing e.g. by Märklin, Trix, Fleischmann, and Roco in Germany. Unacceptable by people with a normal income. They have a pricing so as the pharmacies for high cost medications, hehe. And their locos will be produced in VR China so as the locos of Hornby. But Hornby has a more acceptable pricing at several times. Similar to Piko in Germany.
There is a US manufacturer which produces three lines of models, one is standard with mostly molded parts, one is premium with many hand applied details, and one is museum quality with so many details only collectors wish to buy them, up to $800 for a museum quality loco, well worth £600... What bothers me is that the museum quality models outsell the standard models...
Sam I just had an idea perhaps one day you could start your own model shop call it SAM'S TRAINS that would get rails of Sheffeild and Hattons worried hehehe
While I agree the price of the new duchess is crazy, I believe it's because Hornby got off their ass and made the locos out of metal, shells as well rather plastic. I think there's also so detail added, but I don't think it's worth it. Especially since they're STILL DCC-ready, not fitted. I don't think any of them have sound either.
Thanks for the comment! I agree, it would be a much better deal if they had metal bodyshells, but I do believe that the new ones are still plastic - although I don't own one, so I can't guarantee that for sure! But as you say, even if they were, it still doesn't look like a good deal, compared to three of these slightly older ones! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
200 pounds is a lot of money, here in Europe we get premium collector locomotives for that kind of money. I must admit that the prices here in EU are a bit higher when it comes to locomotives because they get more digital and sound gibberish and gimmicks (I am pretty sure I wrote that wrong). As for the story behind the loco, I have a set of 3 coaches which was a limited edition Marklin thing back in 2008 when I was just abou 11 to 12 years old and of course I didn't got them at that time. I eventually found them last year from a collector who has died and his collection was up for sale (only premium or limited stuff so that guy had an eye for this kind of stuff) and took them. What I am about to say it's a bit sensible: My sister is a medium and she told me that if I take good care of the item of a dead person ''he will have a better at peace sleep''. Now I don' t know but I took good care of my coaches. :)) I do have a question that haunts me for mounths now. Why don't you and other british collectors use the short couplers? The trains would look lovely with no space between the coaches as in real life. I would recommand you watch ''The reassammbler - Hornby Christmass train'' (or something like that) with James May putting an entire set back togheter piece by piece so you see what it meant back in the 50's in terms of old locomotives and running smooth. I have a loco since I was 12 and it runs today as a bliss, no sound, extremely smooth you won't believe it. Nice review as always, great locos and great railway! Cheers
I know! It's an awful lot considering it's just DC and doesn't even come with a decoder! It's lovely to hear that you took good care of those anyway! haha I don't know why we do - I suppose it's tradition and compatibility really, dating back to the tri-ang days! These days though, you can choose to run any coupling you like! Thanks again for the comment, Sam :)
Good afternoon Sam. Great video. LNER locomotive on the turntable., don't know what class. All the engines LMS BRILLIANT. The two locomotives you were driving RUTLAND does it for me. B R GREEN EARLY CREST BEAUTIFUL LOCOMOTIVE 🤩🤩 NOTTINGHAM looks dirty uncared for. I like all my engines like they are ex works, SHOWROOM condition. You got two diamonds there Sam and at a very good price. Are you going to do a video on the retooled examples. Once again great video Sam thank you 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🐖🚄🚅
not sure if I like the weather it looks a bit plastic, and its a shame to hear that's the reason the other one got sold because od a death, at least it has gone to a new good owner when zoomed in onto the logo the body looked like a very very dark red all most black, ive have never been a huge steam engine fan, but they are some beautiful locos, I see mr pigman, has made it into the bushes he must be waiting for mr horseman to stop horsing around on the bridge (Ignore the terrible pun haha) you should look on rails of Sheffield for the class 350 its about 89 pounds a amazing set :), would it be possible to seem them do a double headed as they look like they have a couple holder in the fronts :)
Thanks for that! Yeah a few people have said they weren't too keen on the weathering - I can definitely see what you mean! Ooh nice - I will look at that, thanks! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
2 Fantastic buys in as new condition. And being a bit older have a fully articulated rear pony trail, unlike newer models.
Two very beautiful steam locos.
Thanks very much Norbert,
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam, the slope on smoke box top was made that way to accommodate the streamlined casing. Later after casing was removed, at major overhauls many were refitted with a conventional smoke box. Ha ha, a shout out would be fun.
Thanks for that mate - looks like my guess was right then!! :D
I'll put you down for that,
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
The Purpus of the streamlined smokebox was that the streamlining would fit over the Engine
Ahh okay! I thought as much - thanks for letting me know!
Cheers,
Sam :)
And they were referred to as 'Semi streamed' or 'Semi's'
Such pretty locos. I honestly love the Princess Corrination Class locos
Thanks very much - so glad you liked them!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I am glad that the old guys train ended up in your hands, someone who will look after it.
Nice video Sam I liked the realisticNess of the duchess of Rutland plus I liked the way you filmed the pullman train slowly departing from the front amazing nice one
Thanks very much mate - really glad you enjoyed seeing that! :D
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
The new one will not be metal it is plastic the same as yours, are yours DCC ready? I have a TTS sound one for £175 which is City of Birmingham.
Blimey - that makes the price all the more baffling! I bet they're lovely with the TTS though! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I get back from a long day at Severn Valley and come home to a Sam'sTrains video on the princess coronation class. Today is a good day
Ooh that's lovely to hear mate!
Thanks again for yesterday,
Sam :)
Ooh, that's quite a hard one! I think the odd one out is the single-wheeler next to the country station but I'm not really sure. I'm probably wrong. Cheers, Luca
Thanks Luca, and well spotted - I think it was! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love these locomotive classes!
I do too - thanks for the comment!
Cheers,
Sam :)
The unstreamlined Coronation class is like a mix between the Schools Class and the Merchant Navy Class almost. But I perfer the streamlined version of the Coronation class. IT LOOKS AMAZING!
haha yeah I see what you mean - it does look that way, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Another nice and beautiful loco from Sam and some beautiful ratings btw
Thanks so much - glad you agreed mate!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Ahh lovely - they really are wonderful! Still working well today?!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Just picked this video up. The slope was a left over from streamlining. After the streamline casing was removed the smokebox was left slightly tapered.
Yes that's absolutely right - what a great thing for Hornby to include on the model! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Received the lovely ‘Sir William Stanier’ from the new Princess Coronations and its easily my best model yet, plan on buying the BR blue one coming out in December as well. Thanks for the video Sam!
Ahh that's great to hear - they are indeed superb! Hope you enjoy the forthcoming one too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
There were great moments at Carlisle back in the early '60s when the locomotive versions of two great engineers met: Stanier and No7 - Sir Nigel Gresley. Very sad that the former didn't survive into preservation.
You get a big thumbs up just for restoring something that an old man probaly loved!
Thanks very much mate - yeah I felt very good about doing that - and now I love her too!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Must get one to see how it compares with my tender drive version. I must say I prefer the older moving pony truck rather than the new fixed flangeless type. The older ones are also more tolerant of sharp radius points.
Thanks Gareth! Yeah absolutely - I thought the idea of making a new version was to make it more realistic... well that isn't what they've done with that pony truck ;D
Thanks for the comment,
Sam :)
Hi Bill, no problem mate - that's really good to hear! Thanks a lot for the lovely comment!
Cheers,
Sam :)
The smoke box is like that, because she was one of the streamlined engines. When the streamlining was taking off it left the slop in the front.
Ahh that's good to hear - my guess was right then! :D
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
Amazing video I like the weathering on the princess
Thank you Liam - yes that weathering does come out very nicely!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I like the unstreamlined version of the coronation class locos. And she looks good in any color especially blue and black. :)
Yeah me too - it's a very handsome design! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A couple of corkers there Sam
Spot on with the slope on the smoke box.
Have a great w/e,
Jon
Thanks so much Jon!
Ahh good to hear I guessed right, hehe!
Right - so did Hornby make the single chimney version in this era then? I'd suppose they must have!
Yes the B1 was the odd one out, well spotted! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching mate,
Sam :)
The smoke box is sloped because Princess Coronations that have that have had the streamlining taken off. Great video! Cheers, Luca
Yes you're right - such a cool feature on the model! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains thanks sam for the advice👍
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I love the way you said the new one out soon and it will be better ....? Just hope the new one don't have dodgy motors and trim falling off that seem to be Hornby way at the moment
haha yeah - I'd filmed this before it was released! Absolutely - it better run like the real thing for almost £200 - sadly I can't justify that price though, so I won't find out ;D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I believe the smoke box sloped down to accommodate the streamlining!! Once it was removed I can imagine that it was left for a while and then changed :)
Ahh that's good to hear - my guess was spot on then, hehe!
Thanks for letting me know mate,
Sam :)
It's amazing and the detail and how she runs great review
Thank you mate! Really glad you liked these :3
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
So happy to see this, and the Duchess of Sutherland being at the Crewe Heritage Centre.
Amazing work Sam :3
That's fantastic to hear - thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Sam your right about the smoke box on Rutland it was built as a streamlined type loco. It had its streamlining removed in the war. I bought my four duchess/ coronations in 2001 I payed £89 each. Hornby are having a laugh at the price of the new one.
Ooh that's good to hear - thanks very much for letting me know!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains no worries mate.
Cheers,
Sam :)
(Which I adore!)
Keep up the great work! 😊
Hey! Yeah I would like to pick one up - if the prices go down, I may well do! I decided they couldn't possibly warrant the price tag - but I couldn't justify buying one in the first place :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
The sloping boiler is a sign she used to be streamlined. When de streamlined she retained the original boiler until reboilering . So it’s quite right to have an early green livery on it. It would have been equally accurate in blue.
Thanks for that Russell - looks like my guess was right then!
Thanks a lot for the comment,
Sam :)
7:16 I guess the sloping front was to fit the streamling it wore as well!
I think I prefer the 46251 over the green one, but i like 46228's sloping smokebox!
Yeah that's right I think- others have said the same!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I have just got one of the new duchess and there good but not worth paying the full price for. I paid £155
There's not that much difference to the older models .
I've found the new duchess a bit noisy when running and not as smooth and some locomotives
Looks like you got two good locos there
Hi Oliver,
Thanks very much for feeding back on that - you think the same as I do - they are a clear improvement, but definitely not worth the money!
That's interesting about the performance too - not that great to her!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Hi mate, no that's not something I've ever tried before - take a look online though, I'm sure you'll find something to help you! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
maybe the new coronation is brass that would account for the price. also in the last review you asked about a 1p, well the alx terrier was classed 0P, ether it was weak or overpowered
It's possible, and that would be some justification - but I'm told that they are in fact plastic, which is dreadful. I could be wrong though, because I've not seen one myself!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I think the odd one out was an LNER loco near the Turntable.
That's right - very well done mate! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Lovely locomotive I have a British railways experimental blue one and it's lovely
Ooh wow I bet the blue is just fantastic! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
Thanks Sam keep up with the good work love your videos
I’m getting a big engine this Christmas hopefully 😁
Ooh awesome!! Any idea which one?? :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Nice I get mixed up with these between the princess and the duchess
Thanks David! haha yeah - they do look very similar, especially without the streamlining!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Awesome review Sam! You covered her brilliantly :) She really does look fantastic :D
Thanks very much Mark - much appreciated mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Sam, I prefer the City of Nottingham, just something about a maroon & gold livery. I agree with you about the costs/RRP of the upcoming model update by Hornby, probably not realistic when compared to other recent models.
Thanks a lot for the comment - yeah I think she takes some beating, really lovely that one!
Thanks again,
Sam :)
That chassis was used for Gordon by the Rev. W. Awdry.
Are you sure?! This chassis was designed after he died ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam this may be a old vid but a new comment I wanted to tell when they de streamlined it had the sloping smoke box because the streamlining was curved at the front as u know and de streamlined versions were under it so for the curve they had to slop it a little
Yeah you're absolutely right - so cool that the model portrayed this too! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Again a nice loco Sam!
Thanks very much as always Marco!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hello mate, just wanted to say that you did a great job with this new video, like always, and that Prince Coronation Class Hornby locomotive looks spectacular :D
Noah: )
Thanks a lot Noah, very much appreciated mate!
Cheers,
Sam :)
No problem mate and I did share the video on Facebook for the competition :D
Noah :)
Very nice Sam, it’s been awhile since I saw one of your videos and had forgotten how good they are. I have decided not to renew my
Hornby Member Club subscription, they are pricing themselves too high.
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
A Stunning model of City of. London
Fantastic video mate really enjoyed it and that steam engine is amazing
Really glad you did like it mate - these have always been some of my favourites :3
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains your very welcome mate. Enjoy the rest of your evening from TrainBoy 66
Great to be back sam!
Thanks a lot Sam! :D
Have you tried inserting the locos and tenders with a plastic bag in place so you can just lift the plastic to get them out. Roco/Fleischmann do this and it saves breaking things!
Thanks Paul! Yeah Hornby do that these days too with their Styrofoam packaging, and it does work very well!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
The one with the sloping smoke box is a semi meaning it' still got its streamlined smoke box still fitted so it' now as a semi streamlined
Ahh awesome! Thanks a lot for letting me know!!
All the best,
Sam :)
Hey Sam great video, I was wondering if you had any thought on buying the wartime GWR castle class loco, or the tornado 4-6-4.
Thanks a lot mate! Ooh I would quite like that - maybe I will try one! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Russian Vodka Tornado is 4-6-2
W.P. ALLEN No.60114 oh thanks dude
Sam'sTrains Nice. Glad I could help.
Hi again sam just one more question if the wheels on your locomotive lock up what does that mean?
Hey Daniel - it could be a number of things, most common are split gears, bad quartering, jammed rods or an axle failure of some kind - is one of your engines in trouble?? :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Good news i managed too solve the wheel locking problem!! :) think the wheels werent aligned up properly inbthe axels so just had to realine them
sad to hear the man passed away but at least his model train went to someone who will love it,run it and take care of it
Yeah - that was sad really :(
His loco was in bad shape though - so I was really happy to be able to get it running again!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
but you said they said he use to run it all the time.maybe he didn't have what he needed to fix it in his old age but if he ran it alot that shows he loved his model train none the less and now it has moved on to be loved by a new generation of man kind to enjoy just as much as that old man did as well
The cab on Hornby's new princess coronations have got painted detail.
That's good to hear Adam - I suppose that's a given for the price!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks again for all the info,
Cheers,
Sam :)
No not yet! But I will if people want me to! haha that's fair enough - quite a few have said that, and I prefer them pristine too :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Once again, this is a beautiful model Sam! I wanted to tell you my latest research discovery! An attempt was made to preserve a 4th example but sadly it failed! :( That example was No. 46243 City of Lancaster! Still, its good to have 3 preserved examples!
That sounds awesome Ryno, thanks very much for sharing this with me! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Your welcome Sam! :)
That does sound awesome - but I'm not much of a modeller ;D
Thanks again,
Sam :)
7:09 That is sloped forward so the streamlining could fit on top. This would be a loco that had recently lost its lining. :)
Ahh okay - yeah that was my guess too!
Thanks for letting me know ;3
Cheers,
Sam :)
I couldn't choose which one I'd rather buy in the poll. Because I'm on a budget, I'd choose whichever was cheapest if I found them. Weathered or unweathered doesn't bother me, if it looks nice, I'll buy it
That's fair enough mate - you can get some pretty awesome cheap locos! Look up the Electrotren Barclay 0-6-0! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Try and review and Unboxing and run the East Midlands Trains class 43 holmby Park
Ooh okay - sounds good, I'll check those out!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great video. Was there an LNER loco on the turntable? :)
Thanks a lot mate! Yes there was - well spotted! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
That weathering though :o
haha I know!! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
The most expensive train I ever brought was a train set, for 375 euro (335 GBP), and for a single loco 230 euro (205 GBP), with pre-order (that's almost 20% off).
haha I get that - I prefer them pristine myself, but I liked this for a change!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Can you help pick me up off the floor?
I must have misheard and read that.
Nearly 200 for a loco?
That is ridiculous, I don’t get how they can charge that, is it all hand made and painted?
Bachman locos in my opinion are better detailed and more accurate (suppose its down to them being HO.)
Your locos are beautiful and were actually priced at a sane amount.
Nice buy.
Sorry to hear about the old owner passing.
Here is a bit of a weird question, got given half a dozen trains, one is missing a tender (hope to find one on eBay.)
And I have a tender and no engine, and I have no idea what engine it belongs to it’s in BR green. I don’t suppose there is anyway to find out what engine it came from ?
Sorry for the weird question,
Thanks,
Kyle.
haha! Thanks for the comment,
Nope, they're not hand made - everything is done with machines and then they're assembled. It looks to me like the bodywork is done in plastic too, which is a shame given the price!
Hmmm, not really, though if you send me a photo of it, I could probably tell you!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Everything is hand assembled but it still needs skill to produce the moulds and fixtures needed to make and assemble the models. Production costs are going up so mods wont get cheaper. Bachmann models are 00 as well like hornby models and are in a similar price bracket to Hornby
I’m sure that the previous owner of the Dutches of Rutland
Would be happy to know that the model has gone to someone who is going to love and look after it
I hope so - I'm doing my best to take care of it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Well done Sam!
Even though I don't like the LMS, the review of this was amazing:)
Thanks a lot mate - really glad you enjoyed it anyway!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Puh, Over here a little Diesel shunter cost's over 200 Euro
And a Steam Locomotive with tender up to 500 Euro, absolutly stupid.
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Norbert Roll
Your so right I live in Germany by the way
great video and nice models
Thanks very much - really glad you liked them!
Cheers,
Sam :)
cool
Sam I love this video and I love the coronation class :)
Thanks again Chad - really glad you liked these!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam I just had an idea perhaps one day you could start your own model shop call it SAM'S TRAINS that would get rails of Sheffeild and Hattons worried hehehe
haha! That would be fun - I couldn't rip people off though, and I'd have to if I wanted to make any money doing that ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
14:26 I think that's the same reason the smoke box is tilted at the front
Thanks George! Yeah I thought that may be the case!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Amazing. I've just extended ny hornby so I gunna make a video on my channel later
Thank you!! Ooh fantastic - sounds great! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great review! Cheers, Dan
Thanks a lot Dan! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I enjoy all of your video films on You Tube
Not gonna lie i really like this class, i might be biased but city of Nottingham might be my favourite. (because I am from there)
Yeah me too mate, it's lovely isn't it?? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wow what a beautiful loco :O
Thanks so much! :D
Hey Sam. Completely off topic but what do you feel about N gauge??
Hi! I don't know much about it to be honest - but I've always found the size very impressive!
Cheers,
Sam :)
What a beautiful engine
Thank you mate! :D
Thanks again for the comment,
Sam :)
Beautiful model! They’re cool when they’re streamlined! I hope someday the National Railway Museum decides to overhaul Duchess of Hamilton!
Thanks a lot mate - ooh yes, that would be lovely to see! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Your welcome mate!
Ryan 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
Great review
Thanks so much! :D
I get the enjoyment out of this video
That's great to hear mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
City of Nottingham? What a great city! Then again I am a bit bias when it comes to my own city lol!
haha absolutely - we all are I think, lol ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
i got the princess Elisabeth at York market for £30 it run great
Ooh wow - that's a great price! Glad you like yours mate :3
Cheers,
Sam :)
Do you think the Duchesses look better in green or maroon?
I think Maroon for me - but I love both! :D
Thanks for watching,Sam :)
Once again great video Sam thank you 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🐖🚄🚅
Thanks very much Mark - well spotted on the LNER, that's the one! I think these really are diamonds, yeah! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey sam have you reviewed the duchess of Hamilton? If you havent and you have the model, could you please?
Not Hamilton, but I've reviewed plenty of Duchesses - they're all mostly the same!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
not sure if I like the weather it looks a bit plastic, and its a shame to hear that's the reason the other one got sold because od a death, at least it has gone to a new good owner when zoomed in onto the logo the body looked like a very very dark red all most black, ive have never been a huge steam engine fan, but they are some beautiful locos, I see mr pigman, has made it into the bushes he must be waiting for mr horseman to stop horsing around on the bridge (Ignore the terrible pun haha) you should look on rails of Sheffield for the class 350 its about 89 pounds a amazing set :), would it be possible to seem them do a double headed as they look like they have a couple holder in the fronts :)
Thanks for that! Yeah a few people have said they weren't too keen on the weathering - I can definitely see what you mean!
Ooh nice - I will look at that, thanks! :D
Thanks for watching,
