  • Learning about 1939 Play Ball Cards is a fun sports card history lesson, as the owner of the company, Jacob Bowman, would go on to also create another legendary sports card set: Bowman, in the late '40s.
For three years, Play Ball Cards were the biggest game in town, producing the best cards. This 1939 Play Ball Cards set has some great profile pictures on cards, like for Hank Greenberg and Joe DiMaggio, but they also have great action cards, like for Ted Williams.

I love the 1939 Play Ball cards! 🥰
It's such a cool set, with good photos and nice descriptions and trivia about the players on the back.
That's a great Hank Greenberg card! The Mel Ott is another nice one to go for! 🙂

Man, I had to choose between a Greenberg and an Ott, and I went Greenberg because of meeting his granddaughter. Had a personal touch to it. But I’m definitely thinking about getting an Ott at some point, too!

Thanks for the shoutout David ! I appreciate it.
I’m glad Hank made it to you safely ! Cant wait to see him in a tux in a future video. Crossing my fingers for a 2 for you ! I think he’s got a real shot . I liked some of the facts about the gum company. Never knew that was the same company who produced the bowman cards. Pretty sweet !
Take care my friend. Keep on collecting 👊

Of course, Garrett, you guys are the best! I’m hoping for an SGC 2, also. I’m guessing a 1.5 tho. Yeah, Jacob Bowman owned Play Ball Cards, then after the war, started again with a company called Bowman. Wild Wild West back then! Haha

This is a super cool pick up, David, congrats! I’m very aware of the major Pre-war sets, and have always been very intrigued and fascinated by them. However, other than one T206 semistar (Wildfire Schultz) I picked up in a graded card draft, I have never owned one. I think it’s so awesome you’re dipping your toes into that era, and look forward to any thoughts and content that might bring!
I think I’ve mentioned before how for most of my childhood, I thought a 1975 Topps George Brett was forever unattainable, so you might imagine the legendary status to which they’ve been assigned in my mind!
Great looking Greenberg! Congrats again, love the card!

Whooooooah, I missed this - what is a graded card draft!?!?!?!?
Thanks for watching and your kind words about my Hank! He’s on his way back from SGC right now!

Look forward to seeing him in a tux!
So I have one long time fantasy football league in which my brother and I got a lot of the league back into cards. This led to us (about 10 years ago) having our football auction and then having a big bust afterwards. Next step (when wax was still affordable, was us pooling all our money and buying and busting cases, and having a draft after of the cards this produced). Finally, about 3 or 4 years ago, when wax became astronomical, we decided to pool the money and buy graded singles, and then do a draft of those cards. So at one of these drafts is where I picked up my only prewar card.

@@Scott__H Bro, this isn't me just asking for more Scott H stories for our newsletter, but dude, you need to write this up for the newsletter! Ideally, if you could kinda recreate what the draft order of some slabs would have been -- THAT WOULD BE AMAZING! Did someone keep records?

David, congratulations on your acquisition of a pre-war card. I have always looked at vintage cards as a piece of history. If that card could talk and tell you where it has traveled and whose hands it has been in, lol
It will look so nice in a tuxedo.

Very true, my man, these old cards probably have some great stories to tell us! Some young kid pulling it out of a gum pack 85 years ago, then maybe his mom stashes it in the attic after he left for college. Then they sold the house and forgot about them, so some family bought the house and found all these old cards. Then they sold them to a dealer, then that got sold to some Tigers fan that actually met Hank Greenberg in the ‘70s. Then maybe his collection was willed to his daughter, who sold it to another dealer - maybe Ballpark Memories! Then I bought it from them! Haha

Great information. Tge oldest I have is a 1948 Bowman. I only collected Hockey and Football until 3 years ago. I only collect Pittsburgh items and have all the Topps except the Clemente rookie and the high number 1952's. I just started on the Bowman cards. I don't know much about the prewar stuff though.

    Hey David
Congratulations on the Hank Greenberg card. I didn’t know the ‘39 play ball cards were the first to use true images. I’m really not a huge fan of the cartoon cards. I didn’t know he was a good looking guy ( almost close you you) 😊
He would be even better looking without the paper lose but what can you do?

I think I misspoke on the true image cards - there are some older ones, but this was the first of these types of cards. Thanks, Bill.
