  • The battle at Tankersley is one of those long-forgotten (yet significant) battles of the Civil War, and outside of a few articles (credit to the excellent research done by Newcastle's Foote) there is little known about it. I went on an adventure to South Yorkshire to find out more...

I stumbled upon this video when looking for something else, what a happy accident! I love small channels like this, they represent the true and original spirit of UA-cam.

2:08 just posting to prove to my children (when we have them) that I followed Yorshire's Hidden History before she was famous and invited in to historic sites by excited staff who are delighted to personally show off their relics.

It's crazy to think that a battle involving at least a few thousand people has but one account to tell us it even happened! Makes you wonder how many similarly sized battles (not to mention the many smaller ones) have been forgotten completely. Lovely video.

Great idea for a channel, so glad I found my way here (From a different channel, the amused royalist or something....) Thank you for the time and effort you put into this work. The English civil war is a sadly underappreciated part of history! All the best from East Yorkshire.

I enjoy these civil war stories, in my younger days I was in the Sealed Knot and took part in musters all over the country so I find these 'lost battles' fasinating, well done.

I was born in Hoyland Common and used to be in Tankersley Church Choir for a year or so in 1952-53. I used to sit under those cannon balls during some services and read the notice many times. A pity that you couldn't show us where the battle was thought to take place. Was it near the Golf Course or The Lady's Folly? We used to play [not golf!] there as kids.

Fascinating stuff - these events were glossed over or not covered at all when I did History at school.

It is amazing how there are so many smaller (and some quite major!) battles of the Civil Wars that have been virtually forgotten. Lostwithiel over in Cornwall has to be one of my favourites (did a video on it myself a while back) with the Earl of Essex getting his army surrounded by the Royalists, then deciding to escape in a fishing boat, leaving his infantry commander to surrender to the King, and after all of that getting a letter of thanks from Parliament for his conduct!
Also, not Civil War related, but a video on the Pilgrimage of Grace might be interesting. I was surprised to find out that the only memorials (unless I have missed any) to Robert Aske are a blue plaque near where he was executed and a bench in the village of Swainby!

@@CatherineWarr Ah that is cool, if you need any sources for that, then I will have to have a dig around (a lot of state papers from Henry VIII's reign have been put online now which might be of interest, although I personally haven't looked through the 1536/7 ones yet, not to mention I doubt many documents from Aske's side will have survived given that the King would not want him or the rebels to be remembered too fondly!)
If you ever need any help with ECW stuff then I do have a fair bit of stuff (particularly in regards to uniforms and standards, although sadly a lot is unknown or a bit vague in that department). The British Civil Wars Project is always worth a visit as well if you haven't already come across it: bcw-project.org/
Best of luck with the future videos, and a belated congratulations on reaching a thousand subs!
