We answered the question no one was asking! 2022 vs 2002 Twenty years makes a huge difference 😅
You almost had him lol
I have an idea for another in this series. Since new cards obviously creep old ones with the card pool normalized, what about classic, complete GOAT format decks vs the random pulls from new packs?
That's the most lucky 12 packs of LOB I've ever seen. Alec just rolled all his luck for the next year lol
Not rlly, its just the 5 bucks pack reprints. They have a guaranteed rare and maybe a holo, not just maybe a rare or holo like back in the day
They're the 2017 reprints. Not really worth much.
@@L4ftyOne Ah that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!
new series: alec in the hole
@@L4ftyOne rare has always been guaranteed
Fun fact: The Tri-Horned Dragon is treated as a ritual monster in some old videogames like YGO Forbidden Memories and YGO The Sacred Cards and its ritual card is called "Curse of Tri-Horned Dragon"
its also baffling as a secret rare. Its not as widely known as blue eyes, its strictly worse then multiple tribute monsters in the set, it could literally be a common
@@ich3730 at the time blue eyes wasn't even famous. Even Pokemons first secret rare card wasn't Charizard or Pikachu ....it was Raichu.
@@Stormtrooper-oc4vn Plus Blue Eyes was super easy to get via Kaiba's structure deck.
Surprising how close this was all things considered. It is rather weird that modern boosters are really just that, boosters. They are useless by themselves and your best cards end up being the generic pack filler, not any of the actual playmakers people want to get out of them. It also is bad that they just do not have any spell/trap removal in them, but I assume it's because there really aren't that many new ways they can innovate the effect of destroying backrow, and they probably don't want to keep reprinting mst/twin twisters/dust tornado in every single set
hypocryte praise on pack filler
Probably a result of lack of set rotation. All the spell/trap removal has already been printed so making new cards to do the same thing would just be redundant.
this wasn't close at all
To be fair the POTE pulls were terrible
They have tons of ST removal in boosters they just are all archetype specific or generic cards that target cards on the field and not specifically s/t and POTENTIAL pulled none.
*Thanks for watching the new video guys! This match was a lot of fun to make and really close, too!*
*We still have a fun new segment on the way, but had to hold off due to some, err... difficulties. Soon!* ™
Hey yall showed the wrong card at 17:35. You showed underroot instead of the other overroot
@@upyourasteriod4494 You are right.
lol i was just about to make tht comment im like tht card doesn't do tht..... lol
If you build a vernalizer deck, grand tusk dragon is a good tech card since vera can summon him during your opponents turn
You guys rock!
Love you guys, My kids watch you guys all the time and every day we duel and they come out of the gate with some new Strat. they even tell me things like "Paul taught me that one", or "Alec knows his stuff". I went through a lot of your duel videos and it's amazing how good you guys are and how entertaining the entire APS Team is, along with the editing it's all just amazing for the Yu-Gi-Oh! community.
Edit: Forgot to mention how my personal fave is Alex, he seems very humble. I also noticed he usually comes out with the W's, looking forward to more videos and I'm hoping you guys do a duel with the anime style cards, that would be cool.
X
Really great content for sure
W comment 💪🏻

Just so you know at 17:32 when paul activates what he calls Terrors of the Underroot (the card image pops up for said name) the card's actual name is Terrors of the Overroot.
I was really confused there since the card on the screen did nothing like the effect he used.
I knew I couldn't have been the only one that saw that mistake
Thank you for commenting this. It was driving me crazy because he even says underroot and I’m like but that’s overroot’s effect. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
MtG has a "you know what I meant" ruling because something like this happened in a tournament once.
Nerds
I spent 6 months buying LOB packs back in the GX era. Everyone at the shop thought I was stupid for it, but I wanted an original LOB Exodia the Forbidden One. I did eventually get it, but a month or so into my search I pulled a Red-Eyes Black Dragon, which was what solidified it as my favorite card.
Also, with that money spent I do realize I probably could have just bought a copy of Exodia, but I wanted to pull it from a pack, specifically.
@@ShadowSpadeX I completely understand this feeling lol it just feels different when you pull the card you want instead of just buying it like you feel defeated as you go to the shop to buy the single lol😂😅
If I was a kid and pulled all of these in 12 packs of lob I would’ve felt like the king of the playground, mostly because they were shiny and cool looking and that was all that mattered as a kid 😂
I miss being a kid YGO player. 🥲
@@ygodecktestertube I do too man but I don’t miss my locals experiences as a kid 🤣 used to get scammed by the shop itself and if I did pull something good (like the dad from phantom darkness) some older guy would scam me lmao most of the people there were cool just some shady ish going on
@@Tkempwait Yeah. I was mainly a regional kid (as there were no locals in my area), and there was a lot of shady stuff going on at those, as well. But-I had my gramps with me all the time, so he made sure I didn't get scammed (even though he didn't play YGO).
@@ygodecktestertube sounds like a good man to support you and go to those things my parents and grand parents used to just give me weird looks when I’d ask to go to the shop 🤣
@@Tkempwait Well, my stepdad kinda stopped me from going at a certain point because of "creepy old men" playing a children's card game. 🥲
Simple answer: most likely no but depending on the amount of luck you get yes.
Older cards were easier and more consistent on getting the cards needed since they had easier combos while newer cards need specific combos or types and etc..
So it was 50/50 on he was going to win.
what are you talking about? Its mostly about 4 stars with good stats xD 1800 atk is a common nowadays and was broken meta staple in LOB days
@@ich3730 no the old school cards could have won if gaia power two prong attack and trap hole weren't misplayed. The old school cards could have won if they were piloted by a better player. And in a draft format life points matter. Because you play slower the slower you play the more life points matter. If Paul didn't gain life points the old school cards would have won.
Alec won the best card pulls... even though Paul got the expensive Field Spell. Still this was REALLY CLOSE... for like a few turns. I'm glad Alec made a somewhat Defensive Deck to bring out Tri-Horn and Blue-Eyes... it just wasn't enough.
These are lob reprint packs. Even so, super cool to see a blue eyes get pulled. Pretty crazy pulls tbh.
5:30 regardless of the outcome, Alec definitely won this video. Amazing pulls dude 👏
Paul: oh wow it’s damaged right out of the pack
Also Paul: Manhandles the packs
Lmao so true
Alec is even acting from 2002 when people would just swipe your card off the play mat to read it
Just recently started playing and your channel has taught me a whole lot about the game
Alec may have lost the duel....but he won in luck! That was incredible luck to pull 2 supers, 2 ultras (Blue-eyes too!) and a secret rare from LOB packs!
2 Ultras and a Secret from 12 LOB packs, Alec's pulls were rather crazy in that regard.
Too bad Yu-Gi-Oh cards aren't worth shit. Even if these were og the entire lot wouldn't even be worth $50
@@wigglytuffgaming too bad replying to a non-American mentioning US currency makes your opinion worthless. 😂
What an utterly bizarre response lol
I have tri horned dragon still, so cool you pulled those cards! Takes me right back 20 years!
The newer cards may do more things, but they by themselves ain't that useful and require more in-tune components to fully unleash their potential. Older cards are simpler and are usually more standalone in function, so while they may not be as strong, they are more consistent especially in this sealed duel format. So, I'd say it's 50/50 for either party.
Great vid. I was shocked there was as much back and forth as there was in it. For a future vid, might be interesting to see how a 2002 constructed deck fairs against a pack limited 2022 deck. Consistency vs power creep.
You wouldn't even have to limit the 2022 deck. Just allow the 2002 deck to have access to all the stuff it would have access to. The cards on the banlist are way more powerful than what we make now. Now the ban list is less a thing to tackle problem cards and more a means to sell no product and shut up the people complain that a card is good enough to the point where they have to learn how to play.
I believe that the meta can beat the og cards because of the effects shit, but the og cards won my heart because i saw them as a kid
In a sealed some older sets win unless the new set has a super low rarity arechtype
Yata and chaos dragon together, will kill everything.
Those Gohti synchro monsters are some of the coolest looking Yugioh cards in recent memory. I hope the archetype gets fleshed out further because I wouldn’t mind building a deck around them.
Y’all really got me back in to yu-gi-oh
Master duel lit a fire but these guys gave me a reason to be more tactical and into the game
This just shows how simple it was to build a functioning deck back then. Now you have to to jump through hoops to get an engine going. Packs are now supplements rather than building blocks, clearly. Better on the margins for them.
Those old cards put up an admirable defence. Amazing luck from those LOB packs too!
Those are 2010-17 Legend of Blue-Eyes reprint packs. They have higher pull rates than the actual vintage 20 year old LOB packs but much lower quality control for the cards. Go Team APS!
Any video you guys do that activates the OG game nostalgia feels gets a super like from me. Alec with the incredible pack pull luck was awesome to see. Would be cool to see progressively which old packs would have the best chance against a 2022 set: Metal Raiders, Spell Ruler, Pharaonic Guardian, etc until a set can match up and beat modern-day cards.
so bummed you didn't get to summon Blue Eyes! Awesome duel regardless. actually activating Spirits effects was super cool
I was just stoked to see a stack of LoB get opened. Never expected that beautiful blue boi to pop rear its head!! My first booster ever was a single LoB I ordered from Pokeorder. It came with only 7 cards and I never bothered to ask for a replacement.
They are 5 bucks everywhere, walmart etc, because reprinted
I love that Ghoti archetype! It's actually pronounced "Fish", according to that one meme/critique of the English spelling system.
I love how a deck with almost no effect monsters, but some power spells and traps controlled most of the game, only losing when it ran out of gas.
I was so into that game when I was 9 back in 2003 and the only girl in class that was interested in it. We played alot at recess.
I'm honest: I don't care about this game anymore. But you guys here are so nice and likeable that I watch it anyway. It's fun to watch, very entertaining. Keep going boys!
I liked how Alec made a goofy attempt to bring out his "two pronged attack" that fell on the floor. That move right there is a highlight of the Rare hunters ladies and gentlemen!
I think I would be cool to see 2012 VS 2022.
I was 19 in 2012. YGO was just starting to get "good". And by that, I mean broken. Lol.
I like to think Lady Luck is Larry’s wife And that’s just her nickname for being married to the man in the hole
Paul may have won the duel, but Alec is the Ultimate winner with the nostalgia trip.
Maaaad Respect for pulling those supers, that ultra blue eyes, and the secret tri horned inspiring me to wanna get some OG packs 😅
They are not og tho, reprinted. 5 bucks each. Everywhere available, walmart etc too
Love watching these guys open packs and playing reminds me of the old days of playing lol
Looking at the descriptions between old and new cards just says it all. New cards just have a 5 paragraph essay describing what they do while old ones just say "Send opponent card to graveyard."
For the record, Ghoti is supposed to be pronounced as Fish because it is meant to poke fun at the English language.
Ghoti is a proposed alternative spelling of the English word "fish", used to highlight the disparity between written and spoken English. It is derived from the "gh" in "tough" (pronounced as an "f" sound), the "o" in "women" (pronounced as an "i" sound), and the "ti" in "nation" (pronounced as a "sh" sound).
Forget the duel Alec might have had the best opening video ive seen all year🤣
I would love to see a format similar to this:
You two both get to open lets say 12 lob packs, build a deck and duel against each other
Next episode you both open 12 packs of metal raiders, you can upgrade the deck fro last episode with the new cards and then duel again
Next episode with the third booster that came out and so on
You always get to upgrade your deck with the next booster expansion
Would love to see that!
You mean something like cimoooos sales showdown?
Progression Playoff or Progression Series?
@@hoffedemann5370 i actually meant sealed showdown, but i got autocorrected xD
Prog series irl
Would be cool to do a regression series where Paul opens packs from the set before and Alec from the next set until they meet in the middle.
i like how hilarious the ceremonial bell made the duel
I love how Paul slaps the final pack for good luck and supporting Larry's style, y'all are SOLID comrades! 🤙🏼
Im confused about Terrors of the underroot, looks like you used it to negate a attack, destroy the attacking monster then set a monster?
He activated terrors of the overroot but called it underroot and showed a picture of underroot. So it was really confusing because it would be a completely different effect including bashing monsters in the GY. But he used the correct trap card “overroot”.
This duel is incredibly fun to watch, will say with normal LOB packs you’re getting smoked tbh. You got some decent pulls therr
Very hyped that vendread finally FINALLY got some support after a very long time
Favorite play was summoning Spirit of Pot of Greed to draw a card, and then playing play Pot of Greed after it was drawn cuz to the effect of Spirit of the Pot of Greed. 10/10 card names made it hella funny.
Sprit of the pot doesn't draw a card by itself. He already had pot of greed in his hand. He played spirit so he could draw three
The one thing i can appreciate the old is how simple it was and easy to read cards now you need to learn how to read a chapter book before you can play yugioh and then memorize it all. As one word can screw you over.
16:55 “I don’t know what the cards do, you know.” “oh.” lmao
Favorite play was the cycling of field spells, it was very fun to turn the tables like that with something so simple yet so swingy.
I think this highlights my problem with archetypes and modern sets. The best things about older decks is that you could have a deck that could play with your friends off of nothing but a few boosters. It’s fun to play cohesive decks, but I would rather have more mechanics like link/synchro that make cards from different archetypes/sets cohesive
There are loads of those cards. The archetype specific stuff is still better. You can still play this game off generic packs
Larry seems to have some competition in pack openings.
Kingly content with fire background music 👑
Please, if you ever do something like this again, have the past and future players trade a pack, and the future player MUST run the old pack cards, while the past player may play the future packs if they want.
It`s impressive how long 2002 held. Now made real badass decks with cards from each time and start a revenche.
HOLY LOB PULLS! Alec is the people's champion. Haven't even started the duel yet and I'm just blkown away by this video already. Congrats Alec!
Please bring back Larry in the hole. I loved that series. You and Larry are a great dynamic duo.
alec summoning that secret rare dragon was my favorite play
"Yeah these cards are old, but alot of these cards were like, very useful at a point"
Me being in my mid teens when Spell Ruler came out now feeling like a damned ANCIENT
Love how much non-meta content you guys make. Keep it up!
Glad you enjoy it!
this channel is the best yu gi oh channel and btw i was your 100.000 sub i love your vds
Wait, what happened with Terrors of the Underroot at 17:34? I don't think they did what it said lol
Nvm, I see he actually played Overroot, but said Underroot
@@BLonsdale912 oh good, I thought I was losing my mind for a second there.
I like how he complained the cards were damaged and proceeded to rip open the packs so violently and bend the whole thing
I haven't watched it yet, but a big strength of modern packs is that you don't need polymerization or specific monsters to extra-summon.
Yeah you won't get perfect decks, but "crappy" monsters can usually be somewhat helpful.
I think that was the original idea behind Rituals.
That Spirit of the Pot of Greed was the true MVP of this duel.
You guys should do sets against each other, like Legend Of Blue Eyes vs Metal Raiders and so on.
No thanks, don’t need to see old school shit
Seeing these packs opened back-to-back shows really nicely why Yu-Gi-Oh cards have small textboxes with a tiny font: they just didn't use to have any text on them lol
This was a cool and fun duel, but I'm just over here talking about how mat zones are never properly sized for defense position monsters (22:00).
The newer the card, the more text it has. This video made that a stark contrast. Im pretty sure you could put the collective text of ALL of alecs pulls on any one of pauls xD
When did he pull the field? All I saw was the vendred super ritual monster
“I’ll play my…Dark King of The Abyss, he doesn’t have any effects…” hahahahaha
Watching you press into the PotE packs with your thumb gives me levels of anxiety I have never experienced before. Explain why please lmao
i feel this!!
Paul was throwing so hard at the start for content. Turn one awaking forest plus vanguard just wins the entier game
I love these videos dudes! Keep up the great work!
Is it just me or has yu-gi-oh!. Gotten more and more complicated over last 20 years. It just simply used to be use trap, use spell, summon monster. attack. Now it’s summon monster, activate effect, special summon a monster from the graveyard, now synchro summon, now do pendulum summon, now activate another effect, now activate an effect you can’t read cause the text is too damn small.
As have most games that have been around for 20 years
Paul & Alec pull 3 secret rares......."Nobody tell Larry or he's gonna put us in the hole!"
Where can you still buy old packs like that? Did they ever re release old packs? Haven’t played since like 06
I think a better handicap would’ve been limiting the number of newer packs since the cards are stronger but more complex and require more pieces to function. Something like 6 new packs vs 12 old giving the weaker cards more flexibility
I havent sen the duel or pulls yet but I think the older pack would win because the newer packs have like 20 different archetypes stuffed together whereas the older packs have useful non archetype specific traps and spells and useful fodder monsters to help summon the boss card of the pack
This game gotten so complex and every card does so much now
By complex you actually mean better
@@EBlade3529 Nah, it's needlessly complex now
Rollibg the metal dice over the unsleeved freshly pulled right arm of exodia hurts me on so many levels.
Could have been fairer if it was sth like 10 packs of Pote vs 40-50 oldschool packs (Rip budget) considering how bad rarity distribution was back in the day (unless you are Alec, nuts LOB pulls)
Bro, there is something about yugioh that when ever I drop out of playing it, I always return to it
I hate how the new stuff is so archetype focused. When it's not really complicated it locks you into a limited number of strategic options based on the archetype you can get your hands on. Sometimes it does both. The old stuff might be more general and so technically less consistent, but that generality also allows you to do almost anything you want with them and so is probably the more fun experience (excluding those obnoxious ban lists that pass for balancing the game).
Hey the gimmick of that card would pull a swords of revealing light back so you could add it back to the field and a few other fun plays like call of the haunted as you tributed or something with the monster and now its a rock on the field
Those LOB packs were phenomenal. 2 supers, 2 ultras and a secret out of 12 LOB packs?? Unheard of
Like the idea behind this video! Good stuff my boys!!!
me at the beginning: "hmmm, which would win... normal summon "beatsticks" with 1200ATK, no field control and no reactive play OR fieldspam with billions of effects for every situations"
That bell card caused chaos, such a simple card with a fun effect
This was way closer then it should have been but guess it just goes to show that classic cards still have there place but the newer packs are intended to be used with some of the older packs so they wouldn't need removal when they already have those options
maaan, cant compare in some ways but if then these lob packs where like pure crazyness... like in old mtg hits these would be like million dollar xDD next to the nostalgic value, soo sweet to see!
Just came across this channel…was big into yugioh in early 2000s and then one day in 2004 I just gave all my cards away…talking all ultra and secret rare cards from the first booster packs…seeing this makes me want to get back into this…anyone know how much these old LOB or MR booster boxes cost I see varying prices
Dank, grandtusk dragon has such a cool artwork and it's a cool card in general. reminds me of the gx era. would have been a damn nice card back then.
Coming next, Albas the Elden Lord.
Albaz the Lord of Chaos would be EPIC AF though lol.
15:23 When that die landed on the unsleeved right arm ultra I actually squirted lol
I've only watched until the Ghoti pull so far, but I have to say, I laughed at that. In case anyone doesn't know, Ghoti is named because of an older joke about English pronunciation inconsistencies. (Gh being pronounced as F in words like Enough for example) So it's name is pronounced Fish, not Goaty.
Alec: "You play by your rules and I'll play by mine!"
Me a Person Who Dueled in 2002: "Yup that's the way we were! Fake Obelisk for the win with anime rules."
- - - -
XD Nah Alec won this duel summoning the original first SSR! Seriously way to go!
Would be awesome to run it back, but allow you to make a deck out of the entire pool rather than random packs
