Depression And Cognitive Impairment

- Not only is depression a mood disorder, it is also a disorder in thinking.
This cognitive impairment explains why people with depression may suffer from lost income, or increased days off work.
For instance, for every episode of depression, its been shown to have a 2-4% decrease in ability to remember things.
However, there are ways to treat depression as well as cognitive impairment. In this week's video, psychiatrist Phil Borders briefly discusses how treatment of depression often overlaps with treatment of cognitive impairment.
I've had severe depression for years. I used to be a gifted student but now I can't even handle one class in college. It's difficult.
See Dr. Eric Berg....here on youtube...re:depression. A KETO diet is so good for this...instead of our brains running on GLUCOSE, with a KETO diet, it runs on KETONES...familiarize yourself...it might help. Best wishes to you...hang in there, kiddo.

I used to be a really good student. However, after suffering from acute anxiety disorder and intrusive thoughts ocd ( and mild depression) , my reading and learning disabilities have declined so much. I don't know what to do.
I thought I was alone,I just want to disappear
@@masegom4205 I have the same problem. Wanna write on Instagram?
This symptom is so overlooked with mood disorders, puts a lot of things into perspective for me.
I'm 22 years old, and I've been in deep depression for 4 years now. At first, it was because of the way my life was going, now it's because of my physical disability that also affects my look. I'm disabled since the day I was born, but I didn't get sad over it for most of my life until it deteriorated 3 years ago. The first year of my depression felt like a down mood, it was not a big deal, but these 3 years feel like a death sentence. Every year I feel I'm getting stupid bit by bit, as of now, my comprehension ability really weakened, I can't properly read a book without reading the same sentence at least hree times.

This is a perfect explanation of how I’m feeling right now. I feel so scattered all the time and my thoughts are constantly racing to answer all these simple questions about basic things I used to give no thought about. I always have one day in the week where everything comes back and I start feeling more like myself - my thoughts don’t race, I feel confident about myself and my cognitive abilities. I don’t understand why I feel so foggy, confused, and mentally challenged 6 out of those 7 days, though.
Same problem I'm having, please any fix and also what could be the main cause?
What can be done about the cognitive impairment? Exercise, balanced diet, healthy sleep, socialising, therapy- they have all been shown to improve the cognitive aspects of depression and other mood disorders. Antidepressants in my experience help with the emotional aspects but not so much with the cognitive ones. I've experimented with nootropics too, but like antidepressants they side effects and mixed results from person to person.
Have you tried TMS? I wonder how it affects cognitive depression symptoms.
Trintellix supposedly helps to alleviate the cognitive impairment from depression
Thank-you so much. I just recently started taking anti depressants and its the best decision I ever made. However, I am dealing cognition issues that nearly anyone who talks with me can hear it. There are significant amount of times my words do not flow correctly, but im going back to school this year, hopefully that will make a positive impact on cognition.
Are you taking Fluoextine and Dosulepin/ Dothiepin/Prothiaden ?
Although I am not a doctor, I would suggest you to talk to your doctor if he can prescribe you Modafinil...
That really helps !
Good on you Gloria best wishes at school I highly recommend letting them know of your cognitive issues because when something happens they will give you compassionate extensions and really support you,

This is really enlightening, I experience a lot of problems with cognition when I'm not doing well
Have ANY medications managed to help you?
Luckily they have! but it took a while to find the right ones🙂
@@TheImpiroGirl
What medications work?
Now I’m on nortriptyline and lithium everyday. Some I take quetiapine if I have trouble sleeping. Though just because it works well for me, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. I also had some trouble with side effects but things a luckily stable now
Have your issues resolved? How long did your depression last?
Thanks a lot for this video man. I was pretty depressed for a while but managed to get it under control, but I’m still dealing with the memory loss, and poor thinking ability. Nice to know there’s medication that could help me with this.

I 've had depression since 10 years old. I am now 62 . I have had two major depression episodes and spent 4 years in bed not being able to function. After 4 years I was in remission but I never felt the same . I could barely string a sentence together. My brain felt damaged . It took another 2 years before feeling myself again.
Though out my life I have spent more time depressed than I felt well. My brain never feels well. For the past 15 years I find my thoughts scattered in my brain and I mix up my words sometimes when I speak and sometimes say the wrong word. Is this a part of depression ? I would really like if someone could speak about this. Do people with depression mix up words when they speak. Thank you
Yes it is definitely a part of depression and also anxiety...I am apart of depression and anxiety support groups and your question is a very common one and all the answers are the same- yes very much so it does cause these issues on a daily basis.
The groups are on Facebook by the way.
@@carnivoredownunder Thank you very much for you quick reply. I do appreciate. I will become a member on Facebook. I'm sure this will help knowing there are others that feel like I do.
It's very comforting to know you are not the only one x
@@carnivoredownunder can you tell me the names of the groups please 🙏
Really helpful to see your focus on the cognitive effect of depression, not just the mood effect. Especially the comparison with alcohol level was enlightening. Medications which have an anti depressant effect can help a person's cognition dramatically (helping them think more clearly than they have for a long time)
I have broken down by 75% I cant remember anything. My attention is less than zero. I am worried my girlfriend will say see ya later too. She is much younger and I am so afraid of losing her. She says no but what about in a few years. I just got adderal for energy. We will see. I am so tired 90% of the day. Isolating than faking it. I am not financially set either.
What a mess.
hope you are doing better. don't give up,
You are still worthy and Jesus loves you and wants the best for you. Go to Him, tell him how you feel and ask Him to restore every bit of memory or energy that you have lost over the years. He is able and willing! God bless you

Yes, my depression caused me a problem with concentration, and it started when I was 11. But then I discovered that I have Bipolar 2. It causes a huge problem with cognition and executive functions. I forget a lot, and can't keep thinking about the same thoughts, my mind runs around.
Wao ,this is the first video i saw on youtube about cognitive deficits in depression explained in detail by a qualified person like u despite these issues being quite common, the thing is the positive symptoms overcome major aspects of lives of depressed patients that there is not much left to think about cognition. Thanks for sharing this awesome video.
Good job done.
Thank you, sir!
Depression has been screwing up my memory big time. Could barely remember what I did this week.
Yeah and them there are people who elucidate their explicit memmories even calling them vivid, it's a joke, I've read 5 comments on one reddit r/phantasia subreddit all in one post humble bragging how their memmories and visions and imaginations are on the extreme profound levels that of a gifted scale. How horrible it is to be alive and looked down because my memmory and my comprehensive skills arent polished, I get sick by reading people praising each other of their attributes. It's like no escape they dont have anyrhing to say once someone deprived in skill comes

What about if you have adhd comorbid? Have a hard time sleeping on stimulants and also get Very depressed.

What about anxiety and cognitive function?
What can I do, if I have a learning disability and am depressed because of that?
How long does it take to get better? I had a MDD episode in 2016 and can’t seem to recover. It’s 2020 and my cognitive abilities are still horrible but the meds are helping drastically.
I have been depressed on and off for 10 years. My cognitive function is too bad. I have afraid that i have conditions like Alzheimer's. Please advise what medication you took and how you got better?

@@Dabby724 i am doing much better. Have been taking regular brentellix for past 6 months and i can see good improvement.
@@iamdevs did you have problems doing simple things like driving or any activity requires mental effort?
And how are you doing now?
Not being able to think right - like having symptoms similar to ADHD makes it hard for you to do the things that can help you recover.. like remembering to make phone calls and make appointments and do this and do that.. Would you say that's correct?
I find I'm constantly being asked why I do or don't do certain things and why I forget things and I don't even know myself things that I need to do and I don't know how to explain why I can't keep on top of things .. I can't explain why even if I sit 10 million reminders for something I will still forget or even over sleep or something
I used to be very alert, attentive and focused. But unfortunately I went into depression during my college years and since then it's extremely difficult for me to focus, be attentive, memorizing things, thinking etc. I have been struggling to even read, write and even do daily chores for years. I request someone to please suggest any remedies to overcome this as this has severely affected me. Please geniune remedies.
I am facing the same problems. I hve such a study pressure and I can't even read an introduction of a page. It's just so uninteresting. Like I can read but I don't want to take the information at all
Examine your daily activities and you will get to know the reasons for happening so. E.g. how much is your screen time, how much your scroll even after a few seconds or minutes. What do you eat or do you exercise? Do you indulge your brain in some mental exercises? Do you get stressed or anxious enough? Do you Overthink more often?
And finally, you will get the most required and effective remedies for your problems.
Thanks for telling me about those medications because the mediction Lamorgine I am on helps these problems in some ways. So I have been scared to take anything else. Until you told me about these.
so does cognition get better with time, with the help of medication?
It does, but as the Dr said, it may be the last thing to recover, and only 2 meds have actual proof of it helping - Trintellix and Cymbalta. My thought is that all methods of treating depression will help cognition, but to different degrees, and perhaps in a different order. In my patients (I'm a clinical psychologist), I've found that diet & exercise changes, when combined w/medication & good psychotherapy, will ultimately improve cognition as well. Bear in mind thought that there are an incredible # of individual differences, so each case has to be considered in context.
Does cognitive effects are permanent.... Like with every episode is it sure that I will loose 4% permanently?????????? Oh this hurts... PLZ answer....
As far as I've known, the answer is "No". You can watch this for more detail: ua-cam.com/video/G0cL_dCmCaU/v-deo.html

Long term antidepressants will not be good for cognition.

Most people when experiencing a temporary severe illness like complications from food poisoning while recovering from it will be self-aware that they have mild to moderate depression and cognitive impairment and so they refrain from working until they have made a complete recovery from the same. A shared mental illness like Folie a' Deux after trying to cope with so many rule changes over years both at work and at home during a pandemic say in a couple who both work long hours in their professions while being in denial about their understandable at the time problems in trying to keep up with it all would be something altogether different.
