  • In RNZ's new series Crunching the Numbers we are out chatting to Kiwis about all things affecting their wallets. Our first story looks at renting, with research showing almost one-in-five New Zealanders are spending more than half of their household income on rent, while home ownership has fallen to below 60 percent.

    Hey RNZ, How about an investigation on just how many NZ men are living in vehicles? I will tell you, it's a horrific problem that NZ media, government & NZ society don't want to discuss!

    Paying $620/wk in Wellington, costing about $100/wk in power which is mostly heating and dehumidifying. None of the windows in the house are actually sealed (the frames are disintegrating), but I put film over the ones in our baby's room to help. Only other rentals we can find that we can afford are just as bad if not worse, but for even more money.

    Damn, y'all leave the comments on? Renting is far too expensive in NZ, im just short of the median hourly wage, since i work 42.5 hrs a week I end up making more than the weekly median income and even then I cant imagine actually living in my own place, at least not until my parents die and I dont really want to live in a world without them.
    I look forward to seeing my tax cut be automatically eaten up by all the rising prices, instead of it being invested into building public services

    • @janbyres1099
      @janbyres1099 Місяць тому

      New Zealanders voted for tax cuts. We see daily all the cuts to public services and the cuts to protections for the environment. So many NZers are very self-focused and stupid to vote for the current lot. Before the election there were new houses being built everywhere in the suburb I live in which will increase supply. Two houses demolished and replaced with six townhouses. Not any more. Not with this government. And if you believe their rhetoric you are a fool. Tax cuts are going to landlords.

    I'm not sure how this situation is supposed to get much better. It seems the governments attitude is that housing supply is now too expensive for them to expand, so they're leaving it up to property developers who have an incentive to keep the supply just small enough that they can still charge high rents. This is terrible for our economy if people are forking out heaps each week simply because they need somewhere to live. Huge breach of the social contract

    • @fleurosea
      @fleurosea Місяць тому +6

      Yes and if they are forking out heaps just to live that $ is going into the bank accounts of a few, not circulating through the economy. Imagine if instead people were buying goods & services off each other and everyone was wealthy. If we’re going to do capitalism at least let us enjoy life… instead kiwis say “she’ll be right” and we go on accepting difficulty and struggle as part of our way of life

    • @kingtrance307
      @kingtrance307 25 днів тому

      What social contract? The rents are just as bad in the US now too. They’re horribly high everywhere now with maybe the exception being some countries in SE Asia.

    • @riffking2651
      @riffking2651 24 дні тому +1

      @@kingtrance307 Probably for the same reason though, right? Our political institutions haven't been making sure that society is a group effort for everyone to benefit as per the social contract, and instead money is accumulating at the top. Allowing housing to become a speculative asset and not building state houses to keep that from running away like it has is a big problem, and people in the modern world are not above dragging us into neo-feudalism.
      I'm not against people who put in disproportionate effort getting disproportionate reward, but if there isn't some counterbalancing force making sure that the overall project of society is being a thing that everyone benefits from, then the top of the structure will deprive the substrate it depends upon and things start to break down.
      I think we, as wealthy nations, have a strong responsibility to set the trajectory of our societies in a prosocial direction and ward off these traps. "This is just the way of the world" is not an excuse that will fly.

    Moving is a massive drain on resources, too - it can cost more than $1k/pp even without professional help. Not to mention Housing insecurity impacts physical health, academic grades, & quality of work.

    Well we all know the problems in our country ... politicians know it, they're more focused on spending everyones money on building up systems that have progressively cost more for problems that get progressively worse? Poverty and corruption is by far the largest problem in this country, not gangs,yet we always whack a mole as it rises and not get rid of the hole? The only way to solve this issue is distribution of wealth and a proper education to seal the deal. Why does proper food, education and practically EVERYTHING belong to the rich? And why does everyone vote in capitalistic regimes when only maybe 25% of party policies effect the individual that votes? And 25% is being a generous estimate. If we keep dealing with what we got then nothing will ever change. If its broke then fix it. Dont support a system that lies and gives the bare minimum, because they expect us to give everything while they give little.

    NZ needs to vote out the PM and the political teams. Nothing as not been resolved ever since he became PM. NZ needs a strong leadership with knowledge and understanding of taking care of its new Zealand citizens.
    This situation of increase of rent needs to be addressed. A new legislation should be in place for landlords putting far too much increase when there's a percent to meet with the value of the property. This will also give tenants rights.
    The PM should also fund to have watch dog to help crack down on dodgy landlord increasing rent over there property value.

      I agree. I'm not a huge fan of only showing half information in these sorts of videos. It demonises the wrong people. The truth is that the cost of owning property, between council rates, insurance, and debt costs all going up between 30% to 300% in a very short time. Plus the fact that building in New Zealand is very expensive. It's a sad given that rental costs would also have to go up. Instead of people scape goating landlords people should look at who are actually making profits on the backs of people right now. Banks, insurance companies, and the building monopolies. It's all part of a neo-liberal agenda to slowly get rid of individual ownership in favour of corporate ownership. But let's all blame those landlords, because my wages have stagnated while all the costs of living have gone up, seems logical.

    Makes me sad to see Kiwis struggling for something thats a human right in a first world nation. We keep voting National and Labour in who won't fix housing stock (even though he continue to promise but dont deliver). Broadly speaking, we're not a nation, we're a chunk of dirt in the south Pacific where 5million compete for resources and look after themselves. Our political leaders shoulder most of this issue as their leadership has created such disparity. Look at Nz in the 1950s to 1970s when jobs were plenty, wages were appropriate to costs lof living, loans were cheap, houses were cheap. One almost thinks this qas done on purpose to keep as many people as wage slaves to profit councils, banks, and property speculators, etc.

    The people are paying too much in taxes and getting little to nothing in return! Lower income tax and business taxes to a flat rate of 10%. If you earn higher then 10% is more than the person who earns less anyway. Let the businesses flourish. Give less to the government who does nothing but waste taxpayer dollars. Lower MP salaries, reduce property rates, get rid of the bulk of council employees, and find a CEO that doesn’t take $700k in salary. And make migration to nz harder.

    You don't have to "Crunch Numbers" to know why house prices are rising and rising and rising, look around you, and notice what else is rising. What other numbers have risen, To ask what has caused housing to rise, you must also ask what else is rising at the same time. You can only dismiss this basic and observable fact for so long. Overseas developers demolish previous housing, and lay in long driveways, erect 3 large multifloored flats, the streets become undriveable. The amount coming in, non stop, no one asked us if that's okay, this is whats going to happen. We knew it was going to happen, but we didnt seem to notice, or care. Do we want to remain as New Zealanders, or do we want to blend into some sort of homogenous grey blob. Let's remain as New Zealanders, and not copy other countries like America, and the UK, because it's trendy. It's not trendy, or cool.
