Mr. SEGA LORD X, I'm Japanese and tell you the true pronounciation. The true title name of [GG Aleste] in Japanese is [Galvanic Gunner (GG) A-LE-SU-TA] . It was released in 1991-12-29, the original price was 4,944YEN ($40). This is the most expensive GG title in Japan, bucause the number of released package were very few. And now it cost at least over $400 (with box, manual). I bought two secondhand [GG Aleste 1] (with box, manual), but the price was about $70 in 1993 and the latter one was about $180 in 2000.
As a kid I had to ride around with mom a lot, so I played the absolute hell out of my Game Gear, day and night with the car power adapter! I had the Sega briefcase looking thing to keep it all in :) Awesome video - I had never even heard of some of these!
When I was a kid I didn't have a TV in my room, so I scored a TV tuner for my GG. Went to sleep every night watching it. It was a huge part of my teen years.
@@SegaLordX did you know that power strike 2 on the master system and game gear even though they are same year and developer are actually 2 different games?!
hahaha I know exactly what you mean haha Same here man. I try to give encouragement when I can on this front, because I know how hard it is to stay committed. Especially when living a typical adult family life
Halley Wars and Aleste 1 and 2 were all amazing for their time. I've recently been playing them on my McWill LCD modded Game Gear with an Everdrive-GG.
Nice one. I got back into Game Gear last year after I finally replaced all of the caps to get it going properly again. I had a lot of fun going through Ax Battler and Zenki again. Good stuff.
I imported a Game Gear a bit after the Japanese launch and supported it for years. It's so unappreciated by the masses. GG Shinobi 1 and 2 are some of the best portable games of that era.
I just wanted to thank you for giving the genre it's dignity by calling it "shoot 'em ups", instead of "SHMUPS". I always wondered when one of my favorite game types became a venereal disease.
SLX I'm a relatively new sub and I've been making my way steadily through your videos. I especially appreciate your Master System videos, as it was my first console.Just wanted to say that your appraisal of Tail's S ky Patrol had me chuckling, nearly as funny as the love you showed for the bonus games on the ATGames Genesis Flashback; I am in full agreement with you that Bomber and Cross the Road are seminal gaming experiences, the likes of which we've very rarely seen, before or since!
Well Power Strike 2 looks pretty decent! I used to love my GG, wish I still had the thing. I loved Shinobi, Sonic etc. at the time but I'm a shooter freak nowadays so its interesting to see some of these games I missed back then!
Nice video. I did manage to find a loose copy of GG Aleste in a local retro gaming event in our country recently and it was quite a rarity for a system and I've only been seeing CIBs on Ebay so far.
Furthermore, it was based of an arcade game that was NOT the original Space Invaders. Rather, it’s a watered down port of Majestic Twelve, known as Super Space Invaders ‘91 outside of Japan and North American regions. The arcade game is one of my all time favorites, but not so much with this GG/SMS port.
As the hardware has problems nowadays (poor screen and caps getting old)... I wonder, maybe using something like an PSP with emulator, might be a nice way to check the GG's game library. The cost and the work, one has to take with screen mod and changing caps is kinda daunting...
This. The passive displays these shipped with were washed out to begin with, and they don't get better with age. I applaud Sega and Atari for raising the bar by using color screens; the technology just wasn't robust yet.
Agreed. Trying to find a place to replace the screen. Some can do an LCD for 150-200 but considering i only spent 50 bucks on the system don't know if i can warrant that price.
David Huenecke yeah, I nabbed a used PSP in very good condition for $50, plus it came with 6 psp games and a carry case. Add in a sd card and converter, still less than $75 all in, and can run all the classic 8&16 bit titles...no hardware mods required. I'm a huge Sega fan but I couldn't justify modding a game gear when I can do more with a softmod PSP...
If you're going to emulate Game Gear a 3DS / 2DS might be better than a PSP for individual titles. M2 wrote the 3DS GG virtual console emulator and unsurprisingly it's damn near flawless in execution.
Not only GG Aleste II is the best shoot-em-up on the system, but its soundtrack is one the game gears' best as well. It's one of my personal favourite 8bit ost. As for Space Harrier, you're right, it can be a bit frustrating but i like playing it. It all depends on your tolerance.
I just realized I have 4 or 5 of these shmups on a Chinese special 150 master system games (really game gear) for the Game boy Advance. You can get it for around $10-$12 on eBay and it’s got some great Sega goodness that you can play on you GBA advance 101 and really enjoy these games.
A truly educational vid since I've never seen most of these, or even knew of their existence. Would have loved to have played them back in college, especially Galaga. It might sound strange, but Dropzone doesn't look like a game playing on a Sega system, for whatever reason. Reminds me of a late 80's DOS game.
Game gear is great. However I am waiting to get a new one as I need a mcwill mod to see the games clearly. Also playing the Atari lynx atm. Another great handheld not Sega but for Atari it's got some good games.
Yeah I am looking to upgrade to that Mcwill screen as well. Just can't stand that washed out look anymore. lol Hopefully here soon when cash allows, I will do the upgrade.
If you have a PSP, a quick softmod will give you access to them on a decent screen. If you have the machine itself, I recommend an Everdrive to try them out before paying for the more expensive ones.
Thanks. I agree, the GG doesn't seem to have a big following in the retro community despite having a number of great games. the GG Shinobi games are worth the price of the system alone.
Sega Lord X I agree 100%. GG Shinobi is awesome. The Batman Returns game is good too. I'm catching up on all your videos btw. Great channel. I like hearing your opinions. I grew up Nintendo but always loved Sega. I bought the Saturn day 1 and love it to this day. I'm excited for the Sega Ages games on Switch!
Tell ya what though, you can get GG Aleste 1 and 2 along with Power Strike 1 and 2 for the Master System in one collection known as the Aleste Collection for PS4 and Switch from M2. I bought the collection specifically for the Game Gear stuff. And they even made a new game for the Game Gear! Hard to believe, I know. It’s known as GG Aleste 3 and I think it’s even better than GG Aleste 2. The package is totally worth it for the Game Gear games alone. Got my copy recently along with Zoids Infinity Blast. Better late than never. I said that because I had plans on picking up those two games but either forgot about them or didn’t have the time to buy those games but I’m glad I did.
I literally picked up a game gear with screen mod etc purely to own GG Aleste 1 and 2. Both excellent fun. Worth noting that GG Aleste 2 and Powerstrike 2 on the Master System are two different games...both fantastic shooters with the GG version being arguably the better game. Certainly worth getting hold of both if possible.
Great video! And _Jesus Christ_ I had no idea Power Strike 2 was worth as much as it is, at least if the one copy I can see on Ebay is anything to go by... I might even still have my old copy! I really loved that game growing up, still do, and I rather like the hacked Master System version. The larger screen size works well, and while it makes the game easier that can be compensated for with a higher difficulty settingp While half the backgrounds are too small, half of them seem to work fine, I'm not sure if that was the doing of the hack author or if they were Master System resolution assets left in a Game Gear game for some reason.
Haha, after playing GG Aleste 2 on the Aleste Collection, I don’t think GG Aleste 2 holds up well in gameplay department. The game is too vulnerable against the same tactic for 6 stages straight: Neo Napalm. The Neo Napalm is too wide when fully powered up and bosses are half of them very safe to point blank. In GGA1 you need to be more aware with the point blanking attempts. Are there any plans to have an updated video that covers GG Aleste 3?
I walked into a pawn shop yesterday and saw a game gear, I asked the guy if he had any games for it, he looked for about five minutes, I then saw a box with adapter on it, I took it down it was full of game gear games.
Sadly I don't have a Game Gear (I was never big on handhelds in general), though I suspect that at least some of those can be found on the Master System, at least in Europe.
Wow, I didn't know that the Game Gear had that many shooters! I was already familiar with Halley Wars (because I was a fan of the original Halley's Comet in the arcade), not to mention Aleste, but didn't realize how many others were on it. I'll definitely have to add these to my RetroPie image, or see if there's a GG emulator for my modded PSP for sure! BTW, since you mentioned the GG version of G-Loc, I'd like to know what your take on the Genesis version is? I know that it's supposed to be somewhat of a spiritual "1st Person" successor to After Burner, but collectors in general have not taken kindly to it. I've passed on it quite a few times, so I'd like to hear your take on it if you could take the time to reply. Thanks! Another great episode - I always look forward to the next one, and when it comes, I'm never disappointed!
Genesis G-LOC's biggest sin is that it isn't the arcade. It's scaled back pretty aggressively. I don't think it's a bad purchase if you can get it cheap. Just don't expect the arcade.
Dude--fun fact, they made a GG Aleste 3 a few years ago! It's actually designed for the hardware although most people play it in the Aleste Collection. Great stuff!!!!
Panzer Mini look likes the best game because it has a driven character and some personality to it. Another question… If I would want this game gear, what can you tell me about how long the battery lasts inside this machine??
Alright, well I was wondering for the reason that I do not think I would have enjoyed if the machine gave up on me in the middle of something, My guess remains as this reaches you maybe then it is the full colour showing in games that demands the juice in relation to a rough relative measurement about how far the batteries can make it in terms of longlivety?
I see, this fortunatly sounds like the best solution for me, I am open to suggestions but hesitate because I want to proitise the set up of a few 32x titles and my Saturn (since a CD plus cartridge is on its way, sir) maybe the game Phantasy zone (Asia/JAP) stand more in line to my budget for as my situation is for as it is, I can never work full time on the open market. So Before I advance into a new Project in need be a Little harsh to be honest I need to cut some ideas cold and go in to only a few items even considering my interest have a wide potential far away from a realistic budget.I have also been frustrade that one of my all time fives is Sonic 3D for Saturn, as both CIB offered I bought freezes in the start up screen, but in the future I need to find a better copy and perhaps get Kolibri finally because cartridges or cassettes are stilld kind of robust for the most part and various senario, I have some experience of playing titles for my PAL set up that are not region locked as they are more modern conversions of the games that has been reproduced and re released. .. This comment is getting too of topic, right, but I wanted to tell you this was a good show topic, I have never looked deep into a solution concerning questions about how Game Gear works, but better yet, since I Ignored looking into it when I was new, maybe the time will be right to focus more attention on this machine in the neart future. My Nephew is a Sonic Fan you see and he is turning six this year, this was one of your best episodes in a long time, sir, my good man. Thanks for never holding back on the principle: Always be sincere about gaming, one can really feel the pathos and hearfelt joy and open personal emotions from you from you as you work with these things, it is genuine passion and this is why your show is still great after all this time has passed!
I had Griffin. It was my first game on the game gear, as we got it from Hong Kong and that was the bundle game. It was hard as hell, but it gets a bit varied later on with flying stages. Also there are scantily clad cut scenes with a blue haired lady. Did nothing for me as a 10 year old.
I totally agree with u on Tails holy shit I payed 85 dollars for this crap when I first got it I was so happy then playing I was yelling and pissed off I never touched it AGAIN!!!!! Lol 👎🏿👎🏿😡😆
great video, the GG is rarely thought of as having shooters. I do have a GG and a few games but I also have an emulator on my dreamer.I prefer to play on that. some great games that do not get enough coverage or credit.
10:50 *_Magical Taruruuto-kun_* I wonder if they made it a slow pace on purpose OR if it's a technical limitation due to how ambitious they were ? ...in any case, most of my romhacks are hard-patched, "Complete" romhacks that offer a fresh new experience via new levels... ...but, this is definitely a missed opportunity by the romhacking community to offer a much needed "improvement" patch to speed up the action & game-play.
Sega was way ahead of time as usual. Game gear was kinda like the first portable home cosole since graphics were identical to master system damn near if not better.
Great job making this video. I would really appreciate it if you could make a video daily, or at least 5 days a week. I really enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work BUDDY.
Sega Lord X I see. Maybe you should consider doing it full time. I’m sure you’re channel would be much more successful. Your videos are well worth the time and effort that you put into making them. Maybe in the future we’ll have 5 days a week videos & one of those vidz might be Fighters Megamix.🤛🏼
Great video, I would probably pay more attention to the Game Gear scene if the build quality of the system was better, got 3 or 4 systems but each has an issue that makes it difficult to play and the best one (which I did replace the capacitors) now has a failing screen, would be nice to have an alternative without having to constantly repair or modify.
The biggest problem with collecting for the Game Gear, is the majority of time that you have to replace the capacitors on your machine just to get it to work these days. I'd imagine a lot of people haven't bothered collecting because of this, hence the lower prices for the cartridges.
Yeah. G-Loc is legitimately good. Rather than down-port the Genesis version, they went the smart route, and just made something from the ground up for 8-bit hardware.
Even now, 4 years or so later, at least loose games in excellent shape are still super cheap, even cheaper now than Gameboy as that went exploitation rack stupid over a year ago sadly finally having the snakes catch up to it. Great list of games, and it may crawl, but Tarurutokun is a solid game, I may seek that out.
I remember buying Panzer Dragoon Mini cart only off of Ebay, as a broken/non-working listing for $30 shipped. I bought it on a whim, it arrives, I lightly clean the contacts, put it in the console and it booted right up. lol Emailed the seller with how easy it ran and was asking him how he couldn't get it to run. He had instant regret selling it that cheaply. It's a shite game though, only riding on the coattails of the PD franchise.

Wow, didn't know there was that many on the GG. Jeez, awesome
The GG hung around for years and amassed a heck of a library. There's more than most people realize.

Awesome video! Great job here! I loved the game gear! The games it had were pretty cool!
I love shoot'em ups and the Game Gear rocks!!!!. Better than the Game Boy, that for sure.
The biggest problem with shmups on the GG was the screen. It's so hard to see tiny bullets on it.
You aren't wrong. The faster games were sometimes near impossible.
GG Aleste is AWESOME! I have the Aleste Collection! And it's awesome! Great Video

That panzer dragoon mini is going for outrageous prices! It might be the holy grail of the system
gonna have to get an everdrive to access most of these i think
If you have a PSP, a quick softmod will give you access to them on a decent screen. If you have the machine itself, I recommend an Everdrive to try them out before paying for the more expensive ones.
i haven't had a psp in nearly a decade is it possible on vita? i have a recapped gg so an everdrive is the plan
I'm not sure about the Vita. I haven't messed around with it in awhile. Everdrive works like a champ too. Own one myself.
Lots of great games shown. Nice work. Game Gear is severely underrated. The GG Aleste games are fantastic.

It definitely helps. The screen blur was my biggest nemesis.
I made a note of few of em to play em on my other handhelds

It's a shame it costs so much. It's such a good game.
Sega Lord X, having that and Thunderforce IV as a little girl made me a little spoilt 😁
I should invest in a Game Gear again. My last one had the screen die on me and I didn't have the tool to get the thing open to fix it.
It also emulates well on other portables.
Haha, after playing GG Aleste 2 on the Aleste Collection, I don’t think GG Aleste 2 holds up well in gameplay department. This is the video I didn't know I needed. I'll have to load up a couple shooters on my game gear everdrive and give them a try
I really wanted to do the system some justice since it's often completely ignored. Some of these games are excellent.
GG Aleste II is a greatest 8-bit handheld shooter I've ever played. Nothing else comes close (although I do love some Mercenary Force on Game Boy).
I still am amazed every time I play it. People talk about Recca on the NES, but GG Aleste II is the real 8-bit shooter king.
Thanks for opening my eyes to some great game gear games!
I had Halley Wars and loved it, I think that was the only shooter.
The more I look at the Aleste II clip, the more my jaw drops. I mean... Wow.
It's a showstopper for that hardware for sure.
Lol! Love your description for "Tails" GG game 😂.
Also that "Magical Hat" game is a pretty fun platform game on the Megadrive :)
Tails Sky Patrol was a terror. I loathed it.
lol wow, I happen to have Tails Adventure and that is DEFINATELY a kid friendly game in comparison to Sky Patrol. And it's fun!
Great video! I think I’m going to emulate super Alleste 2 and panzer dragoon mini
Many of these play better with a decent screen. The aged original GG screen definitely is a challenge at times.

Absolutely. Some of these have SMS conversion carts as well.
Very informative ! I had no idea the Game Gear had that many shmups !
is the Game Gear the only 8-bit handheld with a backlight? also, what game is your intro sound from?
There were versions of the Gameboy with a lit screen. Intro is from Astal for the Saturn.

I wonder if the slowdown on these games would be gone via emulation, since software emulation can feature added RAM use.
came for Aerial Assault, not disappointed
Didn't think that GG Aleste was rare, i got a physical copy (with some others GG games) from my uncle...
Ariel assault & outrun were the only two games I had for the game gear..and then I lost my game gear..ah the nostalgia.
That's brutal. I lost an NES Ninja Gaiden III back in the day. Was gutted.
Love to watch the channel so awsome
I played the crap out of GLoc air battle as a kid...have it on the mastser system now and its just not the same
Dude--fun fact, they made a GG Aleste 3 a few years ago! It's actually designed for the hardware although most people play it in the Aleste Collection. Great stuff!!!!
Love this channel 2!
Never thought about collecting for the GG, but i might give this machine a go after this video. Cheers!
Master System variants are there too if you need more options.
The Master System has gone slightly under appreciaited in my house too. Great video again.
Panzer Mini look likes the best game because it has a driven character and some personality to it. Another question… If I would want this game gear, what can you tell me about how long the battery lasts inside this machine??
Battery life is 3 hours roughly. I'd advise rechargeables to mitigate the cost of constant replacement.
It's screen is backlit, which eats batteries. You can always use an AC adapter for it. Most people do.
I hear that shinobi music ... GG Sega Lord, GG
Loved those soundtracks. Even the 8bit stuff was awesome.
Love to get a screen mod for my game gear. Would breathe new life into the hardware
And it absolutely does. Battery mods help as well.
Well, G-loc may be cheap but I sold a sealed copy for $40.
Yeah, the GG being a shoot'em up system doesn't really cross many folks minds. That's what drew me to the episode.
+Sega Lord X glad you did, Thank you. ive been schooled!! lol
16:23 *_Tails Skypatrol_* wow, this looks like it could be an awesome romhack if we get an improvement patch that fixes these issues.
Sega was way ahead of time as usual. Game gear was kinda like the first portable home cosole since graphics were identical to master system damn near if not better.
It really was something in those days. So many great games.
I grew up on Nintendo. All of these are new to me. I just picked up bonkers for the game gear
Another great video sir
Man, another awesome video.
Great video!
The main problem with the Game Gear is better versions appearing on the Master System. However Panzer Dragoon on there is certainly one of a kind.
wha what? tiertex did a good port?
Griffin is almost like you're playing Phantasy Star and take the ice digger and other vehicles and start playing a shmup
Tails Skypatrol is basically Superman 64 on the Game Gear.
Is that good or bad lol
Great job making this video. I would really appreciate it if you could make a video daily, or at least 5 days a week. I really enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work BUDDY.
Man, it takes me a couple days work to put together even these small 10-20 minute videos. It'd have to be a full time job to do any more.
I'll eventually get to a Patreon. Perhaps that will give me some financial freedom to do more in the future.
Emulation on other handhelds could be an option for you.
The biggest problem with collecting for the Game Gear, is the majority of time that you have to replace the capacitors on your machine just to get it to work these days. I'd imagine a lot of people haven't bothered collecting because of this, hence the lower prices for the cartridges.
Could be. The amount of broken systems on ebay supports that.
Both of my Game Gears are busted. The first wouldn't power on and the 2nd has the screen issue.
This video was a very great idea. Almost as great as you sir.
Thank you for the kindness.
Am i the only one who wants a game gear with pre installed games like the genesis mini(and at normal size)?
Awesome video!!
Thanks, man. :)
Credit the Developer Compile because they knew how to make shooter's.
Yeah. G-Loc is legitimately good. Rather than down-port the Genesis version, they went the smart route, and just made something from the ground up for 8-bit hardware.
Absolutely. Something that seemed to work well on a number of games. Castle of Illusion SMS/GG being another great example.
Pretty liberal use of the shoot em up term.
It was. But I wanted to cover some options here that would appeal to everyone.
