Darker colors like black and blue or black and red actually pop up better in darker water. Marsh man mason actually did an underwater lure test and discovered that dark colored lures showed up way better than light colored lures.
As I mentioned in one of the other comments, when it comes to specific colors, it really depends on the specific conditions that you are fishing. As you get deeper in the water column, there is less and less light to see any color. Imagine how black would show up in pitch black water. It depends on the amount of light, which relates to the turbidity as well as the depth you are fishing, because the deeper you go, the less light there is. The point I am trying to make in this video is that in very turbid water, colors that contrast with the specific conditions matters more because the fish will likely only see it for a split second. And they will likely see it with their rod (peripheral) cells and not the cone (focal) cells. This means that they won't have time to examine it and will have to hit out of reaction. As turbidity decreases, this becomes less the case and specific patterns need to be more and more convincing to the fish. Chartreuse shows up very well in deeper turbid waters whereas red does not. Always remember certain colors become almost invisible in deeper stained waters, colors like White and Chartreuse actually lose their color first in stained water making them better shallow water colors.
@@thegreatlakesfisherman don't turbid water and stained water go hand in hand considering the lake has a mostly muddy bottom. Orange jigheads on Black/Chartreuse or Pink plastics are one of my go tos after rainy conditions.
@Gstar5150 turbid water is certainly stained but clear water can be stained as well (as in the video :)). So you’re talking about turbid water. The point I was making was that in turbid you need to go with a color that stands out. Which color that is certainly depends on the color of the water which can vary from one water body to another. I can certainly see that in certain stained waters one color would work better than others. It really would depend on the color and the amount of turbidity.

@@Gstar5150 it would be interesting to see that video. If you have a link to the one you are referring to, that would be great! I would guess the water was not very turbid but just tinted (stained). And even in turbid water, the range of visibility is strictly dependent on the level of turbidity. As turbidity increases the visible range gets smaller and smaller. That said, black would work great because the rod cells in the fishes eyes are good at detecting contrast and the black would certainly provide that. When you say stained water, I am assuming you mean water that is not turbid but clear with a tint? Or do you mean turbid water?
