@novicemilk Sound travels much faster in tungsten than in gold, because it is harder. The tungsten bar would appear to be much thinner than it is on ultrasound due to this discrepancy. If there were a thick outer coating (e.g. of gold,), sound would also bounce off the gold/tungsten boundary, creating a visible echo layer. Busted!
Just check the bar with a strong neodymium magnet, if magnet is attracted to it, then it's tungsten, if not it's gold. Assuming that the density is the same.
Uh yeah he did, tungsten is put in as either inserted slugs or as the whole inside portion with gold slabs cast around it, which would show as extra lines of division just like in the brass sample at the end.
For those people that still don't understand, the density, specific gravity test, water displacement tests won't work if the bar has tungsten blanks inserted in the gold. The density of gold and tungsten are almost identical. But the ultrasound will detect the tungsten anomaly in the gold.
density will also work if you have delicate apparatus but it's just harder to churn through than with this. The density difference is enough still that with a swan necked glassware for volume and an analytical scale for mass, you could easily detect like 1% impurities even, but the workflow would just be slow, and analytical scales are probably not much cheaper than ultrasounds
Actually, you're right, it may not. We use them in industrial construction and maintenance to positively ID various alloys which are evenly mixed, not to find chunks of whatever hidden inside the desired material.
How do we know at know at what acoustic velocity to set for a certain type of material? E.g. Should the acoustic velocity be set different when testing 24k gold than if we were to test a 14k gold bar?
Distinguishing tungsten from gold should be very easy if you have a genuine gold bar at hand. Because of the physical properties of the 2 metals, including but not limited to the hardness, the materials should have a considerably different "acustic density". So you can distinguish bars of the same size and shape and different metal by simply tapping them on a table and you should hear noticably different sounds.
Acoustic properties are literally exactly what he just showed in the video with his ultraSOUND machine.... Tapping doesn't work if it's tungsten clad in a slab of gold, only if it's a lazier alloy which is a lower sophistication attack.
What are you talking about? You can barely lift that size bar and the table would be damaged if you try to tap it without it slipping out of your fingers. You some kind of a UA-cam comment scientist that knows the answer to everything in the world? LMAO.
@@rsz90182 And you are obviously someone who doesn't even try to make sense of what someone else says, instead you like to laugh about everything you don't understand :)
Lots of people have gold bars. There are lots of smart people who were buying gold 10 years ago at $300/oz. The problems is, that theres much more fake 1oz gold bars in circulation than 1 kilo bars, because they are easier to sell.
But Tungsten was never tested ! It's not about any other fake gold - but tungsten. As gold an tungsten has the same density as gold. My suggestion is to compare two exactly same shaped gold and tungsten specimens (they will then have the same weight) but pure gold lead electric current (DC current from a battery, preferably) around 3 times better. Magnetism will work too, but the magnetic differs not that much. Gold is also much softer, but we do not wish to damage it for testing.
Yes it was, a tungsten insert or core would show a secondary boundary line just like he showed in the sample brass piece at the end. Your electric test would fail, because the electricity just passes around the outer shell, which is pure gold in a gold clad tungsten bar.
Surely the only way to be sure is to melt the bar down, print the seal of the storage facility then store it. That way the storage facility has supreme credibility... unlike Fort Cocks.
I have some slight experience with sampling/capturing the "ring" from a SAK and it seems possible that DSP (digtital signall processing) might be one of a combination of several non-destructive means for discerning the "truth" of these bars and/or coins.
Can't you just take the volume of the gold bar (by, say, dunking it in water and see the volumetric change in the water) and then weighing the bar very precisely? If there are any adulterants the bar will not weigh what it should (it will probably be lighter).
@Fridaey13txhOktober The reason we have money backed on confidence is more than trying to stabilize the dollar's worth. If anything, some economists, especially those in the Fed, say that the Dollar is too strong and should be lowered. Plus, gold is a commodity. Its price fluctuates and can rise or drop like crazy at any time.
''simple solution to a complex problem'' no, it's a complex solution for a simple problem. They're elements on the periodic table, ''is it gold or not'' simple question. You bring an expensive aparatus with tons of parts in it, now THAT is complex.
So, debennett4, will XRF analyze to the depths of such gold bars? I know x-rays detect anomalies in bones but I was thinking that fluorescence was more a surface phenomenon.
How many people have gold bars in the first place? Honestly. Go to ebay and see how much a 1 oz ingot sells for, it is insane. I want one though, maybe I will get one of the tiny 1 gram ingots just for the hell of it.
At least a full minute (more than 20% of the video length) wasted at the beginning and end instead of just getting to the point. Dee Gee Wow, here I though Germanys gold was actually held at the federal reserve @ New York which we all know is in the US, right? Tungsten is much cheaper then gold and a little heavier so you can not use mass density as it is very easy to make a fake gold bar with same weight and density as pure gold... if you buy a large gold bar , cut it in half diagonaly and get it remeltet to be sure that your gold bar is real gold , only way to be 100 % sure ...
Team Skovhugger I buy from reputable dealers I should be fine right? I like buying bullion coins better. Gold bars be having me thinking sometimes
it is a good point. it may not be as pretty but i'd rather buy gold bars with holes drilled into them than ones without
How do you detect tungsten coins which are plated in gold? Can it be done? Do depositories do this test when they co-mingle your allocated gold coins?
