Instant like from me without even seeing your reaction... Much love from New Zealand. Kai=food and tangata=people, so loosely translated it means "eat people". Yes, Maori still practiced canabalism until some time in the 1800's. A couple of different schools of thought exist as to why, one is that they were consuming their enemy's Mana (power/prestige/status) and another is that it was simply 'post battle rage'.
Big ups for giving it a go, but the correct translation is "man eater" referring to War, due to the many lives lost in war. Now with cannibalism it was the ultimate disrespect. Being killed is one thing but to have your remains turned into excrement/shit, well i can't think of anything thing lower than that.
Aye. I’ve seen Maori online correct for others for this mistake. It translates as man eater but in their language it means war. However in Samoa is does mean Cannibalism.
Thank you man this is what I was trying to say 🙌 I'm 36 back in the 90s my grandfather had a leg of a farmer from 1920 he had a fight with and killed over a land dispute his house still scares me to this day
I'm from NZ and one night I heard these guys on the radio at work, must have been about 7 years ago. Thought it was pretty decent but definitely generic and not overly special, but then the radio host announced that they were only 12 and 13 at the time and I thought, holy shit these guys might actually get really good later on and now they're touring the world. As for the history side of things, the Maori lived in NZ from around 1200AD to 1642 where Abel Tasman discovered NZ but never landed. Captain Cook arrived in 1769 and there were plenty of land wars, but there were some who tried to make peace. Hongi Hika (pronounced hicca, not hiker) was invited to England as the Crown wanted to establish themselves as rulers and so invited that important Maori chief to try and get some leverage (he later cut down a flagpole flying the British flag in protest against the encroachment of power from the Crown). Introduction of guns meant that warring tribes started to get even more bloody, and the ones who were friendly with the British were more likely to win. Basically it was either get guns from the British or face getting killed. The story in this video is mainly a generic tale and not of any historical event. Hope that helps.
Hongi Hika who was mentioned at the start of this video was my 5th Great Uncle, I'm a direct descendant of his sister Mariu Hika who was my 4th Great Grandmother. Hongi and another Chief named Waikato traveled to England in 1820, while there, they helped with a Maori Dictionary and were also introduced to King George IV, but his main puropose was to acquire muskets, he was successful in that regard and brought these back to New Zealand and set in motion an arms race which escalated over the next 20 years, leading up to The Treaty of Waitangi. And a slight correction is necessary, it was Hōne Heke who cut down the flagstaff at Kororareka, he was was the husband of Hariata Rongomai, Hongi Hika's daughter.
I came here to say that 😂 Yeah, deffo Chaos AD and Roots vibe, I said exactly that to my wife when I first heard them. If we can get Drew into Sepultura then we can get some Nailbomb and Fudge Tunnel in the mix! 🤘🏻
So happy to see you discover Alien Weaponry...you should try any of these "Hypocrite", "Ru Ana Te Whenua" (with CC turned on for this one, the rhythm of the song makes a whole lot more sense if you see what they are singing about), "Ahi Ka", "Blinded" even more to choose from. They are Lewis De Jong (guitar/lead vocals), Henry De Jong (drums/vocals) Ethan Trembath (bass/vocals)... They started their band when Lewis was 8 & Henry was 10, Ethan joined when he was 11. He & Lewis are the same age. These boys played at Wacken when they were 16 & 18... that is quite an accomplishment. Hypocrite & Ru Ana Te Whenua videos show how young these boys were when they started performing. Yes this video is about the havoc those muskets caused when they came into the country. It is also about the tribal custom of eating the flesh of their fallen enemies to absorb their power. The dance the warriors are doing is called "Haka" & most of them are relatives of the band members. The woman is Lewis & Henry's mom, the frame showing a warriors thigh tattoos with the war belt on is their dad. You will see this same warrior in Ru Ana Te Whenua.
As an Indigenous Native American Indian...I can see that this song refers to a historical event that changed the lifestyle, religion, and community dynamics of the Natives in New Zealand. I can relate as the Gold Rush disrupted my Tribe. Thanks for posting this Reaction. I also want to say I appreciate Ireland for the support with the Dine’ Nation and helping with the pandemic of COVID 19 that significantly impacted the Original People in the United States 🇺🇸. 🙇🏻♀️❤️🎤🎶🔥👍🏽💎👏🏽
i just discovered them with you ... and wooow they're amazing .. i love the sound , and even the different rythm that the vocals gives to the song ... it reminds me of a slipknot but with a lighter tone and sepultura !
Thanks for reacting to them Drew. They are trying to keep the Maori tradition going. If you have free time there’s lil documentaries about them thruout UA-cam. Pretty interesting watch. It’s simple song structure with old school thrash elements in their songs. Their album is really good and has earned high praise 🤘
Let's talk bands from around the globe... In no particular order... Mongolia with The Hu - Wolf totem Japan with Maximum the Hormone - Your Small Hands Also Japan with Deviloof - GOUZINZANGOKU (this one is pretty heavy) France with Igorrr - Cheval Sweden with Meshuggah - Clockworks(i know you've done them, but the drumcam video is mental) Canada with Unexpect - Orange Vigilantes India with Bloodywood - Jee Veerey
I'll continue my shouting out for you to check out Mastodon, their tracks Halloween, Jaguar God or The Last Baron for starters. Oh man, you like guitar riffs and groove, Mastodon have them both in loads :) In addition if you want something different to fit the current trend of music from different countries check your own One Minute Silence, maybe the track 1845. They were a kinda Irish Rage Against The Machine and had some goos stuff over their albums.
ya mastodon are good and one minute silence are class i might have suggested that here before , i like :- "wear my skin" ,"revolution", check out " Price of the kings ticket"
Another Alien Weaponry song to react to is "Ahi Kā"! They also have great songs in English like "Rage takes over again" and "Holding my breath"! Also, try out some Mongolian Folk Metal with a band called The Hu! - Wolf Totem - Yuve Yuve Yu And pretty much any song from their debut album, The Gereg!
Bro if ur interested in the history behind their songs you should check out the mini doco they did with vice it goes into where the boys are coming from with their music and even gives a little explanation on their song Ru ana te whenua (the earth trembles)

Great vid, bro! This is a great new band, new sound, new themes. I totally never expected you'd go this direction. Thanks! So if you're looking for something TOTALLY different from other countries try I Fink U Freaky by Die Antwoord (South Africa) or in yet another TOTALLY different direction SummerLand by Lunatic Soul (Poland) or a THIRD direction try Varuo by Sigur Ros (Iceland). None of these have any metal roots, but great songs from other genres and countries that you don't hear about often.
There seems to be a few songs that seem to be a milestone for reaction channels, and this definitely feels like of them. Kai Tangata is such a unique little venture that it almost feels like the perfect litmus test without being ridiculous.

@@leeana6394 King is one of my favorites too (Rose for Epona is still #1 for me!), but when Anna Murphy and the others left the band, their sound changed a bit, so I figured I'd throw out one of the newer ones as a thought. Glad to meet another Eluveitie fan here, though! :)
There is something instantly appealing bout this band. I seen someone say it already but they really do operate on that Sepultura Roots vibe. So simple but so heavy and enjoyable
This is a a cool combo of some of Gojira's grooves and mid 90s Sepultura's tribal influences. Its a good song, and not bad for a bunch of lads who are only old enough to be doing the Leaving Cert. 😊 A lot of metal bands refer to history and heritage in terms of lyrics,-Iron Maiden are great at that. I will recommend some Iron Maiden for ya, since their songs are sung like football anthems beltin' out from the terraces. You mentioned Irish History in the video there- Dublin based Primordial have got songs about Irish history that really depict what the topic is about, such as the track "Coffin Ships"- which by the title, Im sure you can take that its about the mass emigration of Irish during the Famine. Back to Alien Weaponry- again, good track to react to. By the way- the lockdown is extended again till May 5th, so again stay safe mate, and looking forward to more reactions.
You know what's crazy Drew is your Celtic ancestors were, except for a few obvious differences, very very much like those people. Kinda cool when you think about it. Ancient Celts fought nearly naked and painted and tattooed their bodies. Just fun to think about.
Nice, bro, Alien Weaponry are great, and Maori culture is super interesting. I recommend Villagers of Ioannina City - Age of Aquarius (Greek band, both song and the album of the same name are a trip)
Kia ora bro! 1978 - Munster beating the All Blacks with "12,000 in the crowd sounding like 100,000" is the first fact about Ireland I ever discovered 😁 the game was 2 years before I was born, I was 5 when I watched it with my Dad as he helped me understand the magnitude of such a win. Also, it much as it hurt. it also filled my heart watching your National team finally get their first ever win back in 2006. Is And btw bro..... sorry if I sound like a right eegit saying this, but I haven't enjoyed reaction videos in the psst as much as I am yours. Blees up 🤙
You should react to Shepherds Reign- Le Manu. It's another song in the Maori language and is actually dedicated to the lives lost in Samoa during the smallpox epidemic
If you're looking for another non-traditional metal band I would suggest the HU. They are a Mongolian metal band that has an interesting mix between modern metal and mongolian throat singing. If you decide to check them out I would start with either wolf totem or the great chinggis khaan.
Maori history is still a sore spot here in New Zealand. I'd suggest wiking or googling it for a more unbiased information rather than having an individual explain it to you. If you would like to check out another artist who has a song in Te Reo have a listen to Kerretta - Kawea Tātou Ki Ngā Hiwi. Warduna is a must listen to as well.
Kai Tangata literally translates to food people (canabilism). It was believed that the Maori would eat the flesh of those who they defeated believing they would gain more strength in doing so 🤘 metal af song name
You have GOT to try Haken - Nocturnal Conspiracy. Haken is an epic British progressive metal band. Nocturnal Conspiracy is the 2nd song in their concept album called Visions, which tells the story of a boy who has visions of his own death. I am 100% convinced you will love this band and I'll keep nagging you until you have a listen!
Thanks for doing this song. I recently subscribed to your channel. I live in New Zealand. Also should check out from them also Tangaroa and Buried Underground. And yes also got 2 other bands from New Zealand for you to check out Devilskin and Blindspott
Very interesting to hear an entirely unfamiliar language. Most music I like is usually English, a bit is German, which I both understand rather well, there is some French, some Italian where I can make out a few words and maybe the basic meaning and then there's this. The only other band that comes to my mind where the vocals where just "sounds" to me that comes to my mind would be Mokoma from Finland. So... "Mokoma - Syytävä sormi". (Finland) Also: "Obey the brave - Garde la tete froide". (Canada/French) "Samsas Traum - Das Zeitalter der Bäume" or "Hirte der Meere". (damn, I had almost forgotten how much I like those two... thanks for the reminder :D ) (Germany) EDIT: I really kinda wish the Haka would find it's way into metal culture, would love to see that at a show or parties. If anyone still remembers what those are... :P
Dude. Opeth changed my life. Ressurection by Fear Factory is another slammer. And you gave to check out Devin townsend ANYTHING by that guy would surely rock you're marbles and make you asob like a baby
Alien Weaponry are a pretty cool band indeed :D Perchta - Åtem. They are an austrian band and sing in their language, and just released the debut Album 😁

One brother singing, one drums. That's a weirdly common setup for some badass bands. Sepultura(old), Pantera(not singer but it still works), Gojira, these guys. Probably more, but damn, I love it when it works.
Awesome video bruv! Ka pai te mahi, you're spot on with understanding some of the ideas and events around these happenings. A quick easy delve into Hongi Hika, the New Zealand Musket/Maori land wars, and that sort of thing will give you a good picture of the history. A point on te reo vocab/maori vocab, yes its true kaitangata translates to 'eat people' (or more aptly it describes food that comes from people, I.e. kai = 'food' is the noun and tangata = 'people' acts like an adjective. Kaitangata can also refer to a 'warband' as words can have several layers of relevance depending in the iwi (tribe) - some Maori engaged in cannibalism, some didn't, some only ate certain parts (like the heart). There's no real reference to overt cannabilism in this video, more so dark magic involving death, and tapu acts (tapu is a whole other concept on its own). My iwi (Te Ati Awa) was one of the many affected by Hongi Hika's campaign, but such was the way of war - E mahi e Tumatuaenga - this is the work of the god of war
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME - "COLORS". The tracks on this record CAN be enjoyed individually, but the band wrote the album to be experienced as a single 62-minute long song because the tracks are more parts of a grand whole than individual songs. The album flows continuously from beginning to end, as every song's outro doubly serves as the intro to the next, and instrumental patterns are periodically repeated.
Colors is a masterpiece... saw them play the whole thing live and was blown away. It takes a special kind of musician to be able to not only write that kind of thing but be able to play it perfectly live on tour. Respect.

Kai Tangata is the mortal son of Maui. In Māori mythology Maui was basically a god. Kai Tangata's, literal translation is 'Man eater'. This song is about a particular battle between the British and a Māori tribe (iwi), one in the north island I think. There is a lot of recent history in NZ based around colonization (Treaty of Waitangi 1840), of which can be very controversial. The manipulation of the signing of the treaty when there were language barriers and corrupt leadership led to laws and prosecutions being passed/enforced that went against the interests of the natives (typical capitalist fashion, might I add). Clearly being natives to NZ at the time and being technologically disadvantaged, they stole muskets from the British and revolts ran nationwide. I can't go into much detail about particular events because a) i may be biased (being a NZ brit) and b) I actually don't fully understand as it gets very complicated. From what I do gather, in many cases they were slaughtered. But in some, they prevailed, using guerrilla tactics to beat back the British. It's not something i'm particularly proud of from either side... Any war is a huge loss of life.

Hey Drew! New Zealand is awesome! I know you can’t understand them! Sounds like a good time to listen to Maximum the Hormone! They sing all in Japanese! Check out Yoshu Fukushu 😉
If you need more infos about what you see in this video and Maori warrior culture in generall, look up some stuff about Maori warriors (like any kind of tribal warriors those guys were NOT people you'd want to mess with!) and also the practice of Haka which is the ritualistic "war dance" you see a lot of in this video. Actually sports teams from New Zealands, most famously their national rugby team still practice Haka today before matches to make an impression on their opponents before "going to war" in a figurative sense. EDIT: I think the most impressive display of a pre-match ritual like this I've seen was a video here on youtube of a match between New Zealand and Australia where both teams braught in additional people in traditional clothing and weaponry and performed opposite each other. The New Zealanders performing their Haka and the Australians the Aboriginal aequivalent. REALLY intense stuff! You kind of expect to see blood and murder any second.
Dude Alien Weaponary? I love them. Didn't expect this in the slightest. Ahi ka is another one from them, it's pretty good.
oh yes! Ahi ka is a good second for new ears!
Ahi ka is a must tbh.

Abel tasman and Christopher Columbus didn't discover shit people were already there🤦♂️🤦♂️
I meant western colonists to discover it, I'm very well aware they weren't the first ones my man.
Your explanation on the pronunciations are a bit off m'bro its more like hongi (hong-e) and hika (he-ka)
Hone heke cut the flag pole down everything else is on point though hongi hika come back to NZ armed 150 muskets deep and stormed his rivals
Hell yeah! So happy to see you doing Alien Weaponry. I HIGHLY suggest you check out PC Bro, Blinded, and Holding My Breath by them!
IMO, they sound pretty similar to Sepultura in their Chaos AD/ Roots era
Oh my god, he needs to listen to Propaganda by Supultura
I came here to say that 😂
Yeah, deffo Chaos AD and Roots vibe, I said exactly that to my wife when I first heard them.
If we can get Drew into Sepultura then we can get some Nailbomb and Fudge Tunnel in the mix! 🤘🏻
Reminds me of Soulfly! Sounds like "Tribal Metal" has some some similar "Roots" (get it?)

The BEST era of Sep! Everything since the Cavalera bros left has been meh... I saw them twice in recent years (Cavalera Bros.)
YES! I love them, so happy to see you do this reaction.
Alien Weaponry are awesome, a bunch of really young guys with tons of potential. I recommend the song "Whispers" if you touch on these guys again. \m/
Whispers is class! All the backstories to their songs are written up in their Bandcamp page.
At 5:10 I noticed that too. The guitar follows the same riff that the bass did in the intro to the song. I can't get enough of it
As an Indigenous Native American Indian...I can see that this song refers to a historical event that changed the lifestyle, religion, and community dynamics of the Natives in New Zealand.
Saw this band live!!! Love this band!
Some of the best music and vocals in metal. And that's a 3-piece band too.
Man your so responsive with requests from subs!!! Another awesome reaction man! Next up 'Ru ana te whenua'!!
NoLifeTilLeather 13 yes.
This song got me into them before Kai Tangata was even a thing.
@@dazbradz8869 me too man! It's their heaviest imo too!
i just discovered them with you ... and wooow they're amazing .. i love the sound , and even the different rythm that the vocals gives to the song ...
it reminds me of a slipknot but with a lighter tone and sepultura !
I just found about them recently and they kick ass!!! They do have English songs, but they do want to keep their heritage alive.
Mongolia with The Hu - Wolf totem
Japan with Maximum the Hormone - Your Small Hands
Also Japan with Deviloof - GOUZINZANGOKU (this one is pretty heavy)
France with Igorrr - Cheval
Sweden with Meshuggah - Clockworks(i know you've done them, but the drumcam video is mental)
Canada with Unexpect - Orange Vigilantes
India with Bloodywood - Jee Veerey
I'll continue my shouting out for you to check out Mastodon, their tracks Halloween, Jaguar God or The Last Baron for starters.
Oh man, you like guitar riffs and groove, Mastodon have them both in loads :)
In addition if you want something different to fit the current trend of music from different countries check your own One Minute Silence, maybe the track 1845.
- Wolf Totem
- Yuve Yuve Yu
And pretty much any song from their debut album, The Gereg!
So glad you did alien weaponry, you should listen to Holding my breath by them, it’s also English!
"You don't hear melodic in metal" Wtf dude!? Anywho great reaction!
It's not like melodic death metal is like an entire genre :P
Check out Sepultura: Refuse, Resist. Or Roots bloody roots!
Bro if ur interested in the history behind their songs you should check out the mini doco they did with vice it goes into where the boys are coming from with their music and even gives a little explanation on their song Ru ana te whenua (the earth trembles)
This was awesome dude!
Ive had the pleasure of seeing and meet these guys at gigs and out side of them..... They are so fucken nice!
Solid reaction bro, much love from us Maori here in New Zealand 👌

Great vid, bro! This is a great new band, new sound, new themes. I totally never expected you'd go this direction. Thanks! So if you're looking for something TOTALLY different from other countries try I Fink U Freaky by Die Antwoord (South Africa) or in yet another TOTALLY different direction SummerLand by Lunatic Soul (Poland) or a THIRD direction try Varuo by Sigur Ros (Iceland). None of these have any metal roots, but great songs from other genres and countries that you don't hear about often.
These boys shred!!!
Seriously amazing live! They played the Voodoo!
Saw these guys live last year, I love this band
There seems to be a few songs that seem to be a milestone for reaction channels, and this definitely feels like of them. Kai Tangata is such a unique little venture that it almost feels like the perfect litmus test without being ridiculous.

shepherds reign- le manu world’s first polynesian heavy metal band!
The Swiss band Eluveitie is something you might be into. "Rebirth" is among their newer and harder tracks. Heavy metal hurdy-gurdy solo :P
dire5 nice song, but my personal favourite is King with its violin solo
@@leeana6394 King is one of my favorites too (Rose for Epona is still #1 for me!), but when Anna Murphy and the others left the band, their sound changed a bit, so I figured I'd throw out one of the newer ones as a thought. Glad to meet another Eluveitie fan here, though! :)
I’ve been a fan since around 2007 or 08. And I love both of their sounds. Fabienne is a perfect choice imo.

There is something instantly appealing bout this band. I seen someone say it already but they really do operate on that Sepultura Roots vibe. So simple but so heavy and enjoyable
Great group 🤘🏻
@Drew Fortune 2:30 *SAME!* 😄 The first time i heard this song - i pressed my headphones tighter around my ears! _soooaaak in thaat _*_RIFF!_* 😆🤘
Check out their Download appearance. They are awesome live!!
Dream theater - breaking all illusions (live)

And btw bro..... sorry if I sound like a right eegit saying this, but I haven't enjoyed reaction videos in the psst as much as I am yours. Blees up 🤙
You should react to Shepherds Reign- Le Manu. It's another song in the Maori language and is actually dedicated to the lives lost in Samoa during the smallpox epidemic
You should check out "Frankenbok - Last Ditch Redemption", they're an Aussie metal band from Melbourne
If you're looking for another non-traditional metal band I would suggest the HU. They are a Mongolian metal band that has an interesting mix between modern metal and mongolian throat singing. If you decide to check them out I would start with either wolf totem or the great chinggis khaan.
Check out Mongolian band The Hu. They just released a new song featuring the lead singer of Popa Roach.
Saw them in the Voodoo Lounge back in October. They were fucking amazing!!
Alien Weaponry are absolute badasses! I've heard their stuff so often, I can sing it and I'm German.
Nice sound. The singer has a nice voice as well.
These dudes make me proud to be a kiwi metal music in my country is in great hands while these dudes are around
Kai Tangata literally translates to food people (canabilism). It was believed that the Maori would eat the flesh of those who they defeated believing they would gain more strength in doing so 🤘 metal af song name
As for lyrics I haven't dived into them yet 😅
You have GOT to try Haken - Nocturnal Conspiracy.
Haken is an epic British progressive metal band.
Nocturnal Conspiracy is the 2nd song in their concept album called Visions, which tells the story of a boy who has visions of his own death.
I am 100% convinced you will love this band and I'll keep nagging you until you have a listen!
React to "Ahi Ka" by them please. Another amazing song.
(Finland)
Also: "Obey the brave - Garde la tete froide". (Canada/French)
"Samsas Traum - Das Zeitalter der Bäume" or "Hirte der Meere". (damn, I had almost forgotten how much I like those two... thanks for the reminder :D ) (Germany)
EDIT: I really kinda wish the Haka would find it's way into metal culture, would love to see that at a show or parties. If anyone still remembers what those are... :P
Dude. Opeth changed my life. Ressurection by Fear Factory is another slammer. And you gave to check out Devin townsend ANYTHING by that guy would surely rock you're marbles and make you asob like a baby
Alien Weaponry are a pretty cool band indeed :D
Perchta - Åtem. They are an austrian band and sing in their language, and just released the debut Album 😁

One brother singing, one drums. That's a weirdly common setup for some badass bands. Sepultura(old), Pantera(not singer but it still works), Gojira, these guys. Probably more, but damn, I love it when it works.
Xytras the brothers are on vocals and bass and their friend is in the drums
@@meganpage8384 xytras has it right, drummer Henry and guitarist Lewis are the brothers; bassist Ethan is their school friend.
Respect.
Hell yes new band to listen to! You should definitely react to Saving Vice- Black Briar

They still go to school as well, mad young dudes, Its Maori im pretty sure, NZ native dialect or one of them, if im wrong someone can correct, live and learn ;)
Hey mate, Shepards Reign are from NZ but sing in Samoan, check out a song called LeManu, it will blow your mind!
