I work on a genetic conservation of a very endangered species of bird in New Zealand called Tūturuatu/Tchūriwat’/Shore plover. They get stressed too easily so they're never shown to the public but we have a few captive facilities that have breeding programs and we release the offspring into the wild. And we have this one bird called Roger...and he's caused so much mayhem. He was born in a captive facility in 2012 and was raised by his parents, Bruce and Kate, who were wonderful parents btw. He had a great childhood and everything. Then as a 4 month old he was flown to an island more than 300km (200mi) away and released onto a nice little predator-free island. He immediately left the lovely island sanctuary and proceeded to spend the next 9 months of his life slowly flying back to the facility he was born in. We don't know how he knew how to find his way back...he was flown to the island ON A PLANE, IN A BOX! Anyway, we find him 9 months later outside his childhood aviary, arguing with the neighbours. He got caught (very easily) and we had to incorporate him into the breeding program. He paired up with a lovely girl named Roxy and all seemed well. But Roger was a very angry bird, and he wanted to fight his neighbours. He couldn't of course, because each pair are separated into their own aviaries. So he unleashed his anger onto the only bird he could...his wife Roxy. In the 5 years that they were together, we had to separate them multiple times to keep Roxy safe from Roger. The problem is, they're socially monogamous and would always want to pair back up. After Roxy died (unrelated to Roger's ab*se) he was shipped to another captive facility in hopes that he'd be reformed and find a new wife. Well he found love with Rolly, a chubby lad much younger than Roger. Roger was absolutely smitten and started building a nest for Rolly. While I absolutely adore a good gay romance, these birds are really endangered and we really need them to breed. So we separated them and Roger spent the next few months depressed. Until finally in 2021 he met a young female called Rata. They've had 8 chicks so far, and while once in a while Roger needs to be put in a time out because he gets a bit too aggressive, they seem to be happy tohether. So that's Roger. Technically not a zoo animal, and also he's absolutely not my favourite local animal either. He's a pain in the butt. He needs to be shamed but he doens't care. My favourite is Hok'mau. He's a good dad, a good husband, and an all-round good boy.
I love your drawing style. one of my favourite zoo animals was rosa the sea otter at Monterey bay aquarium. she basically was a surrogate mom for around 30 otters before they were relaced back into the wild
I think she was also the oldest otter recorded, right? *She was the oldest recorded at Monterey Bay, but not ever. That title goes to another female otter named Etika :)
She is not a zoo animal, but she does live in captivity, Rosie, the pink-footed tarantula! She lives in the Field Museum and enjoys spending her time on her handler's black hat. She famously escaped and was missing for a few months, roaming around the museum. The museum's artist, Peggy Macnamara illustrated a picture book about her adventure.
Loving the zoo animal content! In Adelaide, Australia, we used to have this flamingo named Greater that ended up being the oldest flamingo in the world. It survived a beating by some teens that snuck into its enclosure in 2008, which made news around the country (it was blind and 75). It passed away in 2014 at the age of 83 and its remains were put up in the Adelaide museum in 2021
Your videos are really good. You have such confidence in your art. For me it’s inspiring. I hope to one day be confident and fun in my art the way your are in yours
Mine was Keiko. Free Willy came out when I was 6, and I quickly became obsessed with orcas. I loved them, and Keiko, so much that I named my stuffed orca from Sea World after him. My older sister and I would also listen to "Will You Be There" constantly on repeat. I was even lucky enough to have seen him when he was at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon. Again, this was when I was 6, long before I knew how bad many of those aquariums really were (though I believe Newport took good care of him). Years before Blackfish came out. Years before Steve-O's stunt in Los Angeles I was fully aware that he died in 2003, but I didn't know the circumstances that led to his death or how he spent his years before that, until recently. I legitimately cried when I read it 😢 Orcas remain my favorite animal to this day. I'll be truly, truly sad if I live to see the last one gone.
I'm from Melbourne and have been to the Sea Life aquarium there a few times and definitely have noticed that the penguin enclosure seems a bit small but its good to hear that it's up to standard. I love Pesto and its funny that he's suddenly put my local aquarium into the limelight. Anyway I loved the video, please keep them coming :)
Not a zoo animal, but i live on the east coast of New Zealand and we had Humphrey the elephant seal. Absolutely wrecked havoc on the docks for an entire summer and the community loved every moment of it. We also occasionally get orcas in the marina, although I've never been lucky enough to see them :(
@@moonimoosh5914 I am so desperate to see them, I'm in Gisborne and they come straight up the cut some times but I'm usually at work :( now that I have my own business, I'll close just to see them if I get the chance!! They have fascinated me my whole life
Just leaving this here in hopes it's something you can check out in March (3rd) 2025. Something I discovered this year was De Visdeurbel or the Fish Doorbell. It's a doorbell for fish in Utrecht when they need to cross the Weerdsluis lock during spawning season. It's a frustrating story of human effect on the fishies, but hopefully in how the ecologists are trying to change the way we all can help our animal brethren. I often would see a few thousand humans at a time watching the live stream and was able to ring the bell myself a few times. ^_^ Love your work, beerpup. ❤
My favorite animal I loved was harambe my eldest brother used to feed him at his zoo before he got transfered to Cincinnati. He was the sweetest animal and always favored my brother to feed him rather than the other zookeepers.
I loved Hvaldimir (Whaledimir). It was a Beluga whale touring the coast of Norway, and was firstly thought to be a Russian spy animal. It turned out that he probably had escaped an aquarium. He was adored by a lot of Norwegians and became somewhat of a tourist attraction. He stayed for a long time in Hammerfest where I was working at the time, and I would often say hi to him on my way to work. He was a contact seeking loving little whale with a cool albeit sad story.
So I'm in NZ, and we don't have a zoo in my town, but we have an eco-sanctuary called Orokonui, and there are breeding Takahe there and my friend is their science educator. It's a massive area surrounded by a predator proof fence and the native birds can come and go and the public can go for walks. They have a huge focus on conservation of our taonga and do really amazing work. The Takahe are stunning fat birds by the way.
I didn't know he had surrogate parents that's so cute, I wander how it worked out that way? Also, the way you drew him on the right ride made him kinda look like a big moldy nugget and I must say it is very fitting.
i love your video opening! huh i like those clips of cats eating an the camera is in there food bowl and they became memes. i seen somewhere that they weren't really taken care of.
This lady looks and sounds just like my aunt who owned a small trucking company, but if she time travelled. And if she had drawing skills. And if she had a soul. These drawings are good and so nice to watch.
Aww, I love how your drawings of pesto turned out! When I was a kid I lived in MA, and I used to love seeing Myrtle the green sea turtle at the New England Aquarium. Whenever I go visit my Mom in MA I go to Boston to visit NEA and see Myrtle, since she's still there and thriving in her old age! ❤
my favorite famous animal was KoKo the gorilla. the first introduction i got to her was the interactions she had with Robin williams. such a heart warming video. Rip my guy.
My personal favorite animal’s gotta be Myrtle the turtle at the Boston Aquarium, she’s 70-90 years old, weighs over 500 pounds, and she’s an icon with a wild story to tell, we love Myrtle 🐢💚
Nearby my house in northern illinois is a park with walking trails and a bird rehabilitation center. Some of the birds (i.e. a hawk, a few owls, an eagle) have indoor/outdoor enclosures and its open to the public for free (with a few donation boxes around ❤️). My hubby and i love walking around there and seeing the birds. Its crazy to see an eagle up close and personal and to hear how different they sound compared to what the media has portrayed them as.
I love these watching these videos during my breaks at work. I get to learn about cute animals and watch some fun artwork. It’s also made me want to take up watercolor, my arch nemesis.
I don’t know if I have a favorite zoo animal but I still love dolphins. I loved ocean animals as a kid and kinda wanted to be an oceanographer but it just never worked out for me to get classes. I still love the ocean and even though dolphins are absolute maniacs, I think their incredible intelligence is what makes me like them. They’re also beautiful looking.
I love your content! When I was around 8 I thought I could speak to animals, so I'd talk to the lions through a fence. I genuinely believed I was besties with them
i love how you truly care for animals and do your own research. i'm so glad you decided to draw pesto as well as moo deng me and my bf love them both so ill be sending this to him immediately :3
I love your channel for its storytime and educating the audience especially with the two trending cute animals while illustrating with mixed media 🎨🖌️✨
Love these videos. We used to live outside of Nashville and would go to the zoo there, I can’t really say that I have a “favorite,” aside from the meerkats
I'm in Australia and love the big croc in the Aquarium where Pesto is. He's a big ass boy and always made visits to Melbourne so exciting because I'd be paying him a visit 🐊💕
I would love to see you draw maybe cute renditions of fossils. Maybe talk about some famous finds, most obvious one I can think of is Sue the T-Rex who lives at the Field Museum in Chicago. :)
I dont know about famous local animals, but we used to have a lot of wild peacocks in Phoenix just kind of… around. In a lot of the parks and zoos, as far as I remember. There was this far as fuck park we used to go to to watch the fireworks on 4th of July in fountain hills? Wild peacocks, roaming the park. I loved looking at them. The Phoenix zoo? Wild roaming peacocks. This apartment complex I lived in called lidera or something like that on 16th st. and northern? wild peacocks roaming nearby, they’d cry loudly every day at sunset
Aah I remember Raja! Elephants are so sweet, my daycare took us to Grants Farm and we got to go back and hand feed the elephants there. They were very chill
GOD I remember being at STL zoo and seeing Raja, a little sad he's moving but I get it. Use to have a VHS tape of him being born. Dude is only two years younger than me.
There is an elephant sanctuary that i follow on social network, I love elephants so I really enjoy them. It is not really close since I live in a huge country and they don't have a spotlight animal they promote but just follwoing their work is amazing. If I could I would definitly volunteer there.
Just wait till pesto has kids. We'll have 6 ft tall penguins in no time
Pestos kids: *PAPAAAA. PAAPAAAA. WE’ER HUNGRY PAPAA. PAAPAAAAAAAH!!!*

Penguins much like all birds poop once every 10 to 15 minutes so it's very hard for those enclosures to stay clean lol
As someone with 20 pet chickens. They poop everywhere. Great fertilizer though.
They are fluffy and I love them
the fact it’s on snow too makes it stand out more than if it was in like, dirt haha
This lady looks like she can control water 😂
🤣🤣🤣 I really hope she sees this comment and tells Papa ☠️
Shoutout to Papa Meat
What have you done..
@@paigealicious1718 pointed out an obvious fact
Get out of here😂😂
I love these 10 minute videos with the drawings and the story. Hes the Shaq of the penguins.
I love your drawing style. one of my favourite zoo animals was rosa the sea otter at Monterey bay aquarium. she basically was a surrogate mom for around 30 otters before they were relaced back into the wild
It's sad that she passed a bit ago
I loved watching her birthday streams, ended up being an annual party for me and my friends
I think she was also the oldest otter recorded, right? *She was the oldest recorded at Monterey Bay, but not ever. That title goes to another female otter named Etika :)
I’m a big fan of the Japanese penguin who fell in love with the anime cardboard cutout
grape - kun 😭😭 i ugly cry every time i watch anything about him, i adore him
Ah yes biggest penguin rn
He's the biggest bird.

what monster thinks it would be fun to beat up an old flamingo?? glad he got to live out a full, long life
