  • On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Daniel Janicas(@DanielJanicas) formerly of The Rat Trick to break down the positional group between the Panthers and the Oilers. The two start off with the forward groups where the two discuss the Panthers need to contain Connor McDavid, but provides an opportunity for some bottom six guys to get going. Florida's blue line has not been touched all postseason long while Edmonton's has been tinkered, how much of an advantage does that bring for the Cats? Special teams for Edmonton has been hot, but Florida's discrepancy in penalties taken vs. drawn is a bit more wide than Edmonton's, can that be a factor? It's the two-time Vezina winner vs. a young Stuart Skinner. There's also Paul Maurice having 20 years of experience against Kris Knoblauch who is just bursting onto the scenes in the NHL coaching world. We discuss this and more on today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast: Your Team, Every Day.

The problem with comparing how individual forward lines match up is that the construction of the teams is designed to be different and therefore its lazy logic to do a like for like comparison. Edmonton's (our) bottom six are a shutdown first bottom six. We have a twenty goal scorer riding the pine because he wasn't good enough to be in our top six and he wasn't playing physical or defensively responsible enough to stay in our bottom six. The third line for Florida might be offensively more gifted then the third line of the Edmonton Oilers (not sure that's the case actually) but are they as defensively responsible? I'm not a Panthers expert but I'm not sure that they are. The bottom six for Edmonton are trustworthy against Florida's big guns and they can chip in offensively when they need to. Over the course of the series can you trust any line on Florida against McDavid or Leon? Other teams my have more "depth" (not actually sure they do) then Edmonton. But when you have "Roy Jones on ice" speed and talent in your top six and a bottom six that won't let you down overtime to me that equals a winning formula.

So basically, Panthers are better than Oilers at every position and line. Is this series going to be a sweep?

As an Oilers fan. This will be won on Errors. Who has the least will win. The match is very tight and similar. But in the end, Leon will win the MVP. This will be a grind. If Leon gets Tommahawked like he was against Vegas last year, that's dirty, and heads will roll. Basically the only way to beat us.

A lot of things balance out. The really big difference is Paul Maurice.

Relentlessly having to back check after over committing on the forecheck?

@@owengg17 If you don't understand the value of forechecking & controlling zone time then apparently you have not watched many Panthers games this season. Gotta love self-righteous "experts" that question the playing style of a team that's made it to the Stanley Cup finals.

@@zenman1001 I’ve probably watched more Panthers games than you have Oilers games. I’m just making a comment on playing styles and matchups. Every style has its strengths and weaknesses. The weakness of a hard forechecking style is that the offensive forwards are all deep in offensive zone. They’re more likely to get the defending team to cough up the puck in dangerous areas, yes. But they are more likely to give up odd man rushes going back the other way.
The Canucks had a lot of success early in their series with the Oilers forechecking. The Oilers adjusted by flipping lob passes out of the defensive zone to avoid the forecheckers cutting off the outlet passes. That led to lots of goals for Edmonton in the latter half of the series from fast breaks.
Anyways, look for the flip pass out of the defensive zone to negate pressure and Panthers forward tiring themselves out skating extra distance in and out of the offensive zone as they “Relentlessly” try to create defensive zone mistakes.
As an aside I think the Oilers will start with Desharnais in the press box but if the forecheck is indeed affective their probably cycle him in to the series at some point.

@@owengg17 "Every style has its strengths & weaknesses". Thanks for that pearl of wisdom Captain Obvious. I've said nothing about the Oilers (only that they "have talent") and I'm not the one questioning our opponent's style of play. The Panthers got past 3 of the league's toughest goalies to reach the Cup finals but, sure, you know better. Hope you find something more productive to do with your time other than trolling your opponent's podcast (like checking your med levels).
