To be clear: 1 - I'm not sure what will happen with the marker. I'm watching it closely to be sure the Gamsol doesn't deteriorate the nib over time, which is a VALID concern. This could cause a leak and mean you're breathing stuff in you don't want to breathe. I'm the guinea pig, and I'll let you know. 2 - Plastic is fine. I have had that bottle of Gamsol for months on end, and it's been in its original plastic bottle as well as in a plastic Rubbermaid container with a snap-on lid and either plastic sponge or cotton ball in the bottom. It has not "eaten" or melted anything it's come into contact with. Yes, it's recommended that you store these things in GLASS, but for me, I've never had an issue. If YOU want to be 100% safe, please store your Gamsol & other forms of OMS in a GLASS container with a tight-fitting lid. Gamsol is sold by the gallon in relatively flimsy plastic, so if it was that dangerous to store it in plastic, the company wouldn't ship it around the world in plastic. That's just my two cents. 3 - I'm not sure about a waterbrush, but I personally would not do it. It is too difficult to control the fluid that comes out, and the plastic is incredibly thin compared to a Copic marker. I feel safe with the marker, but I don't know that I'd feel safe with the waterbrush. 4 - If you do this, you're doing it AT YOUR OWN RISK. I added a disclaimer when I uploaded this video, and I was clear about it when I spoke. Again, I do not know the long-term risks and I am taking a chance to find out.
I don't understand the issue people have with Gamsol? It is completely odorless- you don't need to be in a ventilated room. I can not smell any differece between gamsol and water (nailpolish smells 100x stronger than gamsol). I have severe allergies to latex, bandage adhesives, medicines, plus environmental and in 5 years NEVER had one issue using it. It cracks me up that people who complain that it is 'toxic' are the same who glue eyelashes to their eyes and use acrylic nails- come on let's all chill with gamsol hate.
hi there...so this video was almost 4 month ago. Can you give us an update? it's such a great idea and I'd lije to give it a shot too! Thanks for sharing!
I use gamsol with my colored pencils, and was looking around for a better way. I found this and another tutorial that told me it would work. I ordered my empty copic marker and made mine today. It works great, and I couldn't be happier! Thanks for sharing :)
I just had to try this, I thought of this to be a brilliant idea. Don't know long term, but so far so good and I love it. Thank you for sharing this idea with us.
Fast forward to December 2018...what is the final verdict? The possibility of leakage, etc? I was given a set of Prismacolor tools and I was more excited for the sharpener. When I watched your video, I decided to look at the other items and one is a blender marker. I don't know what's in it, but I'm going to try it out tomorrow. Have a nice day 🤗
Remember that I don't know the long-term effects and whether it might eat through the nib at some point, so you're doing it at a small amount of risk! I don't want to be responsible for mishaps, but I'll keep you informed on whether mine seems to leak or anything.
This is brilliant, and I'm going to try it (at my very own adult risk)... Yes, looks and seems like the control would be so much better than using the paintbrushes, or even blending stumps. I'm so glad you posted this video; thank you!
I have several alcohol markers made to use with colored pencils. When they dry out, I just use this refill method to refill them with drugstore alcohol. I always use the 90% alcohol, so I on't know if the lesser percentage would work, but alcohol is much cheaper and easier to find than Gamsol, and works every bit as well. I use the extra syringes from the vet that I had left over, but a kid's size syringe would work just as well. They are the exact size to just fill the cartridge.
I disagree that alcohol and Gamsol are on the same level when it comes to melting down & blending pigment. I think Gamsol works a lot better & is a lot smoother, and the odor of alcohol gives me a headache after a while. Gamsol isn't truly odorless, but when used sparingly (especially this way since I can just pop the cap back on) it doesn't bother me nearly as much. Everyone has preferences, and if alcohol works for you, I'm glad that's the case!
Thank you so much for spreading the word about this "experiment". I ordered an empty copic to try it out - but not with Gamsol inside because I use native 100 % natural essential orange oil (or lavender, same essential and 100% natural; both also in organic version if available). As I prefer the orange smell over the lavender (although this should be more soothing/comforting ;-)) I will only try it out with one orange oil filled marker. If it works I will maybe get an other one for the lavender. :-)
Oooh that's a good idea! I avoid typical oils because they can stain the opposite side of the page, and that's why I prefer Gamsol because it evaporates completely. Of course, it does this at the expense of being quite toxic and flammable.
I know - but with essential oils it does work/behave absolutely like with Gamsol. It may be different with some paper - so testing is really necessary. It happend once to me that orange oil left behind an very light orange tinted spot (in Kerby Rosanes animorphia, LOM ART print) on the backside of the page (so sort of "bleed") but that was the only book I'v come across this issue. Orange and Lavender also evaporate completely but leave behind a (to me nice) smell around the book/pages. And if not drunken completely safe to me (xception maybe for people with allergy to orange or lavender not safe).
Hi Erin just a comment Prismacolor has a colorless blender in marker form with dual tips. I purchased one about six months ago. It doesn't tell me what's in it (odorless mineral spirits?). It doesn't smell strong unless you put it under your nose and it works well w/o soaking the paper. Great idea though. Love ya
HI Nancy! I have one too... and it's alcohol based. Trouble with it is that if you use it over a darker color on a double-sided page, it can push color through to the next page. That's why I wanted to try the Gamsol marker... because it's safer for double-sided pages. :) Thanks for sharing, though! Love ya too, dear. I hope things are good for you & your family!
You're welcome, Tonya! I used stumps too, but it weirded me out having a bunch of stumps that had been dipped in flammable stuff scattered about. This feels cleaner and easier to use. I don't have to have an open container anywhere. Just pop off the cap and go. Still not sure about long-term effects, though. I'll be watching it closely!
Remember that I don't know the long-term effects and whether it might eat through the nib at some point, so you're doing it at a small amount of risk! I don't want to be responsible for mishaps, but I'll keep you informed on whether mine seems to leak or anything.
Why not simply use an alcohol-based blender marker? I use both Prismacolor and Spectrum Noir Colorless Blender markers and they both work well for me without messing with Gamsol. And yes, I use them with my Prismacolor pencils. Just wondering why this would be a better alternative. Also, FYI, Spectrum Noir sells refills for about $3.5 a bottle.
Personally I dislike using the alcohol based blenders in coloring books. It bleeds all over I don't like the look as much as I like the look of gamsol.
Laura Malone hey, everyone has a right to their favorite methods! Glad you figured this one out, very clever. Just FYI I liked this video, I just do have my own views too.
Laura Rafferty everyone definitely has their own opinions for sure. Gamsol is definitely one of the safest oms that they make and I think it gets a bad rap. I know it gives some people headaches but rubbing alcohol bothers me more (even though I use copics regularly). I actually made a giant swatch sheet to test all types of pencils and blending types to see what worked best for me. :)
I agree with everyone here. The colorless blender could be an alternative, but there are two reasons why I wanted to try this instead: 1 - OMS blends far better than alcohol 2 - Alcohol smells worse :) This is just an experiment and I'm curious to see if the marker will hold up - particularly the nibs. It's stored safely just in case, but if it doesn't leak and doesn't let fumes out, then I think it'll be my go-to for the Createspace paper.
+Jennifer Lambert Let me know how those work. I was afraid they would leak, so I was really excited to try this idea and see how it went. I hope your water brushes work too! More affordable in the long run for sure. :)
Jennifer Lambert I use it with my water brushes but I don't fill them with the solution. I just dip the brush in the solution, since plastic isn't very safe for storing gamsol. Water brushes are better than using a regular brush since the nylon bristles are not as soft and can move the pencil pigment around.
+Shilpa J I've been reassured that plastic is fine for storing Gamsol and other spirits. Many forms of OMS are stored in plastic and even shipped around the world in plastic.
I do just want to mention, though, that with a waterbrush, you get a LOT less control so it's more likely you'll have OMS overuse. This can be a problem, so be very, VERY careful. Also, the plastic is much thinner than the plastic in the marker, and while I personally don't think it'll be an issue, you never know. Just approach the whole thing carefully and prepare for leaks if they occur.
I'll see if I can help you out a bit, Shilpa. The stiffness of your brush really depends on which stage you're in. For example, if you only have your first couple layers down, you'd want a stiff brush - something like stiff hog hair. If you've got MANY layers down and you're going to blend those out with OMS, then you want a soft, soft brush. Otherwise you're going to end up lifting your pigment when you have a lot of it down rather than blending it out. Here's a cheat sheet: Blending only a layer or two - Use more OMS & a stiffer brush Blending many layers - Use less OMS & a softer brush Hope this helps you!
Thanks Erin. I've avoided colouring in any of the Bennett Klein books because of the paper (Even though I adore his art) - this might be the answer... Like you, I like to keep the images in the book :)
HI! Love Love LOVE This idea from you and your friend Laura! Thanks soooooo much for sharing! The Create Space paper wasn't my favorite ( at all ) . Question : in your video you say ' add a few drops of Gamsol. ' How much do I put inside? If it's only a few drops-- doesn't it run out rather quickly and therefore need to be refilled more frequently? wondering if taking the tip/nib in and out often would make the tip less 'tight' and may fray it from shoving it in & out? How long does your ' fill' last you? A few drops has me baffled, because when I use a blending stump, I'm in and out of the Gamsol Bottle many times during a coloring page. I bought the empty Copic, waiting for it to come, I just don't want to mess it up . Since you are beyond ADORABLE I thought I would ask you to help me understand :) Adore you! Such a great personality! Thank you!! :) :)
I got a handful of Spectrum Noir markers that were dry == and they were replaced at no charge. If I recall, the 1st series (no brush tip) were known to have problems. What do you think about taking an alcohol marker that "did" have color; flushing it thoroughly with alcohol and then refilling with alcohol or essential oil (I liked that idea too)
I'm not sure plastic is good for storing gamsol. My artist friend insisted that I put my gamsol in a glass container with metal lid for use. Gamsol bottles are plastic and she said it's not safe, artists are meant to put it in their own container. Just my 2 cents. Also in my personal experience, prismacolor works best with gamsol. I don't like the look of it with my other pencils like Polychromos (not that you can't use it, I just don't like it).
+Shilpa J I was clear that I was doing this at my own risk and unsure of what might happen in the long run. However, I've spoken to several painters and other people and have been reassured that Gamsol is safe in plastic. The Gamsol bottle itself is plastic. The main concern for me is the nibs and whether they will deteriorate, causing it to leak. It's stored inside a ziploc bag for extra safety and I plan to check it often.
Simple Art for Adults Looks like my friend was either mistaken or overly cautious! Well if that's the case, I might just fill my water brush with gamsol and try it out. Thanks for the info 👍
Maybe not! Like I said, this is an experiment... so it could eventually eat through the nibs or something. I think in this case, if it bothers you, you shouldn't do it... or if you're extra sensitive, you shouldn't do it.
Simple Art for Adults That is true. I've been using various brushes for the gamsol and they've been working fine for me. I think I'll stick to that, plus it means I don't have to buy an empty marker as well 😉 I'm on art supplies freeze for the conceivable future 😣
Wait, It is sold in a plastic bottle, even pure mineral spirits from Home Depot is sold in a plastic bottle- nailpolish remover, rubbing alcohol, and BLEACH are all sold in plastic bottles. I can't imagine that gamsol is the worst of the bunch and needs different storage.I have never read anything about having to transfer gamsol into glass bottles this is just crazy to me.
Remember that I don't know the long-term effects and whether it might eat through the nib at some point, so you're doing it at a small amount of risk! I don't want to be responsible for mishaps, but I'll keep you informed on whether mine seems to leak or anything.
i understand that hun, all good, I'm holding off for a little while to hopefully hear how yours goes in the short term. I have an empty copic here so just waiting for further reports lol

Sorry Erin, I do agree with him, but I also believe in experimenting and trying new things! Just make sure you work in a ventilated space, open a window! ❤
+Laura Rafferty I was clear that I was doing this at my own risk and unsure of what might happen in the long run. Simple Art for Adults I totally agree with the way you presented the material, that's why I apologized!! But I have my own preferences too, and extreme sensitivity, so I'm avoiding either now at this point! The great thing about colouring is all ways are the right way! ❤
Simple Art for Adults yeah!! I never meant to come across as negative, just can't handle any type of heavy chemicals anymore, but that's my own unique problem because of my allergies to oil paints, I developed over time very acute sensitivities because I didn't take proper precautions like gloves, ventilated spaces, and not finger painting with it. I was gifted oils, gamsol, liquin, and so forth around 8 years old, and unfortunately wasn't aware of how toxic that stuff is. I'm glad you're explaining it clearly in both video and text not to mix that stuff, and the disclaimers are strong too, so you did a great job handling the subject matter, and nicely done to credit Laura too!
Thanks, Erin. I happen to have a few empty Copic sketch markers. I have a full set of Copics and have often mixed my own colors. I will be trying this awesome tip!
Remember that I don't know the long-term effects and whether it might eat through the nib at some point, so you're doing it at a small amount of risk! I don't want to be responsible for mishaps, but I'll keep you informed on whether mine seems to leak or anything.
I have a couple of Artist Loft blender pens that only lasted for a couple of uses. I started using Gamsol in them and have had zero issues - no weird odors, breakdown of nibs(not anymore than when I used it originally) or plastic. But I like the empty Copic marker idea - I think the nibs would be better quality. I wouldn't recommend the Artist Loft pen for any reason!
Neat idea. I just recently got some gamsol. The pens get so expensive and I don't really like using the stumps. I was dipping a dry pen in the gamsol. I didn't think about chance of a chemical reaction.
Yeah it's something I don't want to fool around with for sure! I thought about getting a colorless blender & refiling with Gamsol, but then there are toxic fumes & kabooms. I just got the empty one lol.
To be clear:
1 - I'm not sure what will happen with the marker.
4 - If you do this, you're doing it AT YOUR OWN RISK. I added a disclaimer when I uploaded this video, and I was clear about it when I spoke. Again, I do not know the long-term risks and I am taking a chance to find out.

+Laura Malone Like a charm! Thanks for the idea!
Hi, Erin! It's been a year now. Have you had any problems with the nibs? I am eager to try this. Thanks so much!
I just had to try this, I thought of this to be a brilliant idea. Don't know long term, but so far so good and I love it. Thank you for sharing this idea with us.

Just ordered mine. Thanks for the video. What a game-changer for me too! There were only 20 left.
+Diane Knuckles It's SO much simpler and I don't have to worry about spills. :)
Simple Art for Adults Where can I order it from?
naturegirl2110 Erin posted an Amazon link in the description box. Click on that and it takes you right to it.
Diane Knuckles When I clicked it at first the link was a blank page.
If the link isn't working it may have sold out. I'm not 100% sure.
That is a brilliant idea with the copic marker Erin! And, I never knew Dover had a catalog either! Awesome!
Thanks for the informative video!
You're welcome!
What a great idea! I love the ease and portability of using the marker...totally going to try this! 😁

Knowing I’m headed to the blick outlet on Thursday guess who is gonna grab a couple empty markers!!! Tfs!!
It's an at-your-own-risk type thing! I don't know if it'll eat the nibs eventually or what, but I"ll keep you informed!
i am new to coloring. i keep hearing create space. what is create space

Wait,
It is sold in a plastic bottle, even pure mineral spirits from Home Depot is sold in a plastic bottle- nailpolish remover, rubbing alcohol, and BLEACH are all sold in plastic bottles. I can't imagine that gamsol is the worst of the bunch and needs different storage.I have never read anything about having to transfer gamsol into glass bottles this is just crazy to me.
That is a very snazzy idea using an empty Copic container.
Wow that’s clever
+Dawn-Marie Manning Laura is a smart one! It does seem to work quite well and it's SO easy.
sounds awesome
Remember that I don't know the long-term effects and whether it might eat through the nib at some point, so you're doing it at a small amount of risk! I don't want to be responsible for mishaps, but I'll keep you informed on whether mine seems to leak or anything.
i understand that hun, all good, I'm holding off for a little while to hopefully hear how yours goes in the short term. I have an empty copic here so just waiting for further reports lol
Thanks for the info
Omg I have to try this!!

I wonder if you can just use a water brush? edit: just tried and not a fan..lol
I'd be worried about too much escaping and causing a mess.
Thanks for this video. I use gamsol so this is amazing 😀 how do you store it? Does it leak? I have kids medicine syringes so it will be easy to fill.
+Dionne Eason I store it on its side like any other marker and so far it hasn't leaked.
Sorry Erin, I do agree with him, but I also believe in experimenting and trying new things! Just make sure you work in a ventilated space, open a window! ❤

Simple Art for Adults I totally agree with the way you presented the material, that's why I apologized!! But I have my own preferences too, and extreme sensitivity, so I'm avoiding either now at this point! The great thing about colouring is all ways are the right way! ❤
Okay.. just making sure it came across that I was being very clear about assuming the risk and being the guinea pig.

Erin - I am keeping it in a small baggie that is sealed and not with all my other Copics. Thanks!
You need to add more pencil down . Gamsol works better with more pigment.
WhooHoo!!😁
Y dont you just use any other empty markers or pens
+Abigail That would involve mixing chemicals. This marker never had anything in it.
It is the digital age, go to Dover website and you see the same things that are in the catalogue. Save a tree!
